The Sign (instrumental) (3:11)
Review: We all fondly remember Swedish pop group Ace of Base from school disco days back in the 90s. 'The Sign' was one of their biggest hits, reaching number two in the UK before spending a total of six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, as well as charting at number one in countries including but not limited to Australia, Canada, Germany and New Zealand. The bubbly, tropical and dub tinged europop tune also got a nomination for Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. While it isn't going to be remembered as one of the greatest tunes ever, it sure is fun to hear it again

GNESIS - "Pear" (original mix) (3:17)
Actress - "Bird Matrix" (Simbiosi remix) (6:40)
Review: Germany's K7 have got it on lock-down with this latest 12', a full rework EP of Actress' "Bird Matrix" killer by a pair of dance luminaries. First up is Kid606, a man who has been making 'outsider' music since before the term was ever coined, and one who has been every bit as important to the dance music scene all the more commercial names. Kid606's Club Mix is driving, filled with slithering percussion and led by a gorgeous swarm of aqueous synths and Zelda-like sonics, while the dub version slows things down and muddies the groove up into a heady, meditative bundle of melodies and beats. Simbiosi, on the other hand, goes for the jugular and delivers a heavy, stomping techno retuning of the original - what a blinder! There's also a tune by the mysterious Gnesis, "Pear", which appeared on Actress' own K7 compilation. Ya need!

Review: K7's DJ Kicks compilation series is given a new makeover with their latest juggernaut from London-based electronic deviant, Actress, who gives one of his rare appearances out of the live format and onto the decks. As expected, the techno shape-shifter puts through a diverse mix, 29 tracks spanning from old-school Chicago house to more contemporary experimental techno and ambient-filtered dance music. The LP is limited to nine tracks in total, including vintage Detroit techno from Reel By Real, distorted outsider disco from the Shit & Shine crew, Gherkin Jerk's "Red Planet" and a new cut from the man himself, "Bird Matrix". The CD is naturally vaster and more comprehensive of the current state of affairs in the techno world with twenty cuts ranging from the distorted house of Breaker 1 2 aka Greg Beato, golden era electronica from Autechre, TTT's Zennor, Germany's STL and even PPU affiliate Moon B! An essential collection of music from 2015.

Review: Last year, Akase duo Harry Agius and Robert Redway set out their stall with a pair of impressive singles on K7. Here, they return to the long-running German label with a similarly atmospheric and otherworldly debut album. Sitting somewhere between intoxicating outsider house, woozy synth-pop, undulating tech-house and heartfelt blue-eyed soul, but with a radio-friendly vibe all of its' own, Graspers is the kind of set that should appeal to a wide range of listeners. Certainly, it's full of memorable songs, enjoyable late night moments, emotion-rich compositions and evocative productions. As debut albums go, it's quietly confident and boasts an unfussy beauty.

Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

Review: As the convoluted title suggests, this double CD mix-up from leather jacket-clad Phantasy Sound boss Erol Alkan offers two distinctly different flavours and a welcome update on his classic first Mix CD release for Bugged Out. The first disc, his Bugged In selection, delivers a fuzzy, off-kilter trawl through some of Alkan's current home listening faves. It's typically eclectic, touching on lo-fi rock, psychedelic oddities, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and soft focus electronica from the likes of Walls and Space Dimension Controller. The second disc, on the other hand, sees Alkan in full-on club mode. Recorded live, it's something of an energetic romp through darkroom disco, Italo, classic techno, balls-out bangers and twisted acid house revivalism. It is, of course, a sweaty treat.

Apparat - "Sayulita" (DJ-Kicks)
Telefon Tel Aviv - "Lengthening Shadows"
Apparat - "Circles"
Review: Apparat's induction into the DJ-Kicks Hall Of Fame proved to be an engaging and at times hauntingly brilliant listen that was not stunted in any way by Sascha Ring's inexperience in the art of mixing two tracks together. The requisite vinyl sampler to accompany the mix allows your senses to fully appreciate the tracks produced especially for the mix by Ring himself and his buddy Telefon Tel Aviv. "Sayulita" is named in homage to the Mexican town Ring called home during the track's inception and removed from the mix the plaintive atmospherics really impress, combined with the organic Hebden-esque percussive 130bpm shuffle. The flipside commences with "Lengthening Shadows", an equally wistful sojourn through electronica from the aforementioned Telefon Tel Aviv that opts to meld the brooding ethereal atmospherics with an almighty industrial half step kick. Apparat's opening gambit from the DJ-Kicks mix, "Circles" rounds things off in equally spooky fashion.

Review: Apparat's respected position amongst the electronic music cognoscenti has been secured mostly via his overseeing the Shitkatapult Empire and the canon of music released alongside Ellen Alien and the more recent brushed metallic tones of techno drama explored as Moderat with Modeselektor. He isn't, however, known for his DJing abilities, which makes his inclusion in the DJ Kicks series a puzzling one at first. This sensation dissipates however once your ears consume the 70 minutes and 22 tracks on offer here. Ring stated an intention to dispel the notion he plies a distinctly bittersweet sound, and that's always going to be achieved when there's the likes of Ramadanman, Martyn and Carl Craig (in his 69 guise) amidst the tracks. Whislt this isn't, as you'd expect, a technically sensational mix, a definite glitchy mood is retained throughout with some dazzling moments. The harmonious ascent of Four Tet's remix of Born Ruffian's from the industrial mist of Autechre's remix of Scorn in particular stands out. Four Tet's collaboration with Burial marks the onset of another highlight with the swift saunter through Vincent Markowski and Ramadanman that arrives at Radiohead twitcher Thom Yorke's "Harrodown Hill". An engaging selection best heard on headphones at high volume that highlights new aspects with every listen.

Gut Man Cometh (Matthew Herberts Feel Right Rub) (6:40)
Destroyer (FOLD Lean Tape version) (6:59)
Review: The master of wacky techno returns. Matthew Dear donned his notorious Audion moniker again for his first album in years under the guise. The Alpha LP featured about a dozen woozy and disorienting dancefloor destroyers and two selections are present here getting the remix treatment by two fellow innovators. The legendary Matthew Herbert remixes "Gut Man Cometh", scaling back the high-octane psychedelia of the original into a driving journey track with interestingly spiced up vocal samples. Aus Music regular FOLD turns "Destroyer" into a tough deep house stomper with emotive pads being supported by some gutsy stomp and shuffle.

Review:  Such has been the rise of Marquis Hawkes in recent times that this debut album must mark as one of the most anticipated house sets of 2016. Happily, Social Housing is a superb showcase not only for Hawkes' talents, but also his understanding of house music in its' many myriad forms. The album does include, of course, a sprinkling of jackin' workouts, but these are outnumbered by such thrilling chunks of loved-up positivity as the Tiger & Woods style loop funk of "Fantasy", the Theo Parrish-ish jazz fuzziness of "Summer Memory", and the cheeky, Todd Edwards style cut-up garage of "Something In Yr Head" [sic]. The album's most potent moment, though, is "I'm So Glad", a collaboration with Jocelyn Brown that already ranks among 2016's most potent tunes.

Review: The first Audion album in ten years shows that Matthew Dear's project has lost none of its raw ferocity. This is audible on opening track "Dem", where a droning groove ensnares wooden, clunky percussion and haunted vocals in its whirlpool-like cascade and then on the gated, distorted gnawing rhythms of "Destroyer". On other occasions, Dear sounds more comfortable flirting with classic sounds; "There Was a Button" is perfectly adequate, acid-led trancey techno from the 90s and "Gut Man Commeth" revisits the edgy minimalism of early Hawtin. However, no matter what influences he mines, there is a hyperactively jittery sound aesthetic at play, audible as much on the slow-motion hoover-led grind of "Bob the Builder" as it is on the rickety minimalism of "Napkin".

Review: Whether or not you've checked the mixed version of Avalon Emerson's contribution to the DJ Kicks series - and if you haven't, you should - we'd heartily recommend this unmixed vinyl version. There's so much high quality DJ-friendly material on show, from the bouncy, polyrhythmic Afro-techno melodiousness of Oceanic's 'Yellow Cone (Unison)' and the Detroit techno futurism-meets-acid-house brilliance of Lady B's 'Cruising Around The Motor City', to the breakbeat-driven brilliance of Waveform's 1998 gem 'Breakers In Space (D.A.T Remix), and the low slung disco-punk brilliance of Dirtcombs (a killer cover of 'Sharevari') and !!! (as remixed by Rub 'N' Tug). The collection also includes three tasy, previously unreleased tracks from Emerson, with dark Italo throb job 'Poodle Power' and weirdo acid electro number 'Wastelands & Oases' standing out.

Review: As a producer, Daniel Avery has rightfully earned a reputation as someone with a distinct stylistic vision. While he regularly flits between styles and tempos, his music retains a dark, horror-influenced edge that's rarely less than beguiling. During club sets, he rarely strays away from a dense techno template, selecting tracks that fit his distinctively foreboding style. It's this side to his musical personality that shines through on DJ Kicks. It begins and ends with two maudlin chunks of otherworldly ambience; in between, you'll find an array of booming, late night techno jams from the likes of Shlomo, Planetary Assault Systems, Slam and Artefakt. Naturally, it's slickly mixed, resulting in a paranoid journey through 21st century body music.

Review: Washington DC's James Bangura really stands out from the rest with his truly singular take on electronic music that's appeared of late on labels like Incienso, World Building and Holding Hands. His latest comes courtesy of legendary German imprint !K7 Titled 'Harrar', a frantic and hyper aware experiment in off-the-grid post dubstep that will totally flip your mind. Over on the second side he goes for something more straightforward in the form 'Witness Dub' an emotive deep house cut that's perfect for the late night.

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, "Psychotic Window" is Bjarki's second full-length outing of 2019 - though eagle-eyed readers may note that it was previously available as a "secret bonus album" within the highly limited edition boxed version of its predecessor, "Happy Birthday". It's therefore unsurprising that it explores similarly sonic territory, with the Icelandic artist flitting between glacial ambient, moody, Biosphere style IDM, dubbed-out doom-scapes, post trip-hop breakbeat fuzziness, unsettling electronica, Autechre-esque beat tracks and stripped-back, sub-heavy techno. While stylistically varied, it's uniformly moody and atmospheric, with a creeping sense of paranoia and despair that pervades even the most melodic of tracks.

Review: Closely affiliated with Nina Kraviz's trip label, Icelandic maverick Bjarki has managed to carve out a unique identity for himself in the hustle and bustle of contemporary electronic music. Following three full-length releases back in 2016, he now appears on !K7 with a new album that shows off the depth and breadth of his idiosyncratic vision. From curious ambient excursions peppered with rich sound design to spooked out boogie and deconstructed techno, sometimes within the same track, Bjarki has ably cemented his reputation as one of the scene's most intriguing operatives. Just take a trip on the fractured breaks and looming pads of "AN6912" and marvel at the originality.
