Review: When it was first released, George Michael's Older was something of a shock to those who were used to his chart-topping hits of yore. Certainly, 1990's Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was a mature and expansive album from one of pop's brightest talents, but six years later Older took a moodier turn on tracks like 'Jesus To A Child' and 'Spinning The Wheel'. There are of course some big bangers too, from the slinky funk of 'Fastlove' to 'Star People', but this was a turning point in Michael's career which finally delivered the creative freedom he'd always so vically called out for. Review: There's a chance this Liverpudlian four piece will be familiar by now. This, their 11th studio outing, first unveiled as the 1960s slipped into the 70s, is a bonafide epic from an outfit that weren't lacking in epics; in many ways a culmination of their time together, marking the end of their active years and beginning of their legacy. By this stage, then, they've emerged from years spent on the inner journey and time on the outer, space cadeting to the hallucinogenic fuelled tones of "Sgt. Peppers" and "Revolver". Of course, there's still plenty of explorations happening, but the gritty blues rock of opening track "Come Together" really sets the tone. Five decades on, it still sounds great and maybe even better than you remember. Even if you own the original, this anniversary edition is worth having.

Review: INXS have gone all in and hired the best in the business to provide a brand new stereo mix of their 1985 Listen Like Thieves album, namely Giles Martin and Paul Hicks, who have been remixing and remastering the Beatles back catalogue together. Ill content to let a better sounding album be enough of a package, the Australian 80s icons add previously unreleased sessions tracks, outtakes, demos and a live recording the BBC did at the Royal Albert Hall in 1986. Of the tunes on here, 'This Time' has a U2-esque stadium-filling atmosphere that is undeniably empowering. But it's also great hearing another, more stripped back side to the new wave icons and 'Kiss The Dirt' is a great place to start with this - you can hear a work in progress and let your imagination can fill in the gaps.

Review: Bands often work so hard to get the right producer and sound as slick as possible. But sometimes those initial ideas with fewer cooks in the kitchen sound a lot more exciting. This collection of Devo studio demos and unreleased tracks culled from cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes, multi-tracks and DATs - spanning their independent label era - is no exception. It's raw, rough and ready in a way that takes you back to the 70s and makes you want to dig out some double denim. Re-recorded in a state-of-the-art studio you'd probably feel very much in the present. It's a mammoth collection with over two-and-a-half hours of material and was originally released in 2000, but this four LP deluxe version is the most eye-catching way to spend time digging through the New Wave icons' stuff and understand why they were admired by the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Neil Young at this early stage of their career.

Review: Ahead of their time? Ruined by excess and ego? A difficult act to market? New York Dolls are one of those stories about the fickle nature of industry and listeners, and the risks of hedonism. Emerging from The Big Apple in 1971, the group had a thoroughly modern sound for the time, combining hard and what was then a very fresh glam rock sound with early punk prototypes, years before people would learn what that means. New York Dolls was the spectacular self-titled debut from the band, put out by Mercury in 1973. Although a commercial failure, it's often cited among the greatest rock 'n' roll records of all time, but despite critical success it did little outside the US, where sales weren't great as it was, and the outfit would only last another few years - with various lineup changes - before calling time. This rare release charts what came before all that, including collector's item demos from their time playing as Actress.

This fantastic box set, comprising three CDs, a Blu-ray featuring a new documentary and 5.1 surround sound mixes, and a booklet full of contextualising liner notes, tells the story of Hendrix's final recording sessions in full. Some 29 tracks of the 38 on show - a mixture of studio demos, completed tracks, alternative versions and jams (including one astonishing, 26-minute medley) - have never been released before. Properly remastered and mixed, it offers an authoritative glimpse of what would have undoubtedly become a classic rock album.
