Blue Note's Tone Poets series is all about celebrating some of the greatest jazz guitarists, reissuing their seminal albums as a nod to virtuoso talent. Grant Green's 1963 album Feelin' The Spirit consisted of jazz arrangements of traditional African American spirituals such as 'Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen' and 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child'. Given the historical weight of the music, it's no surprise to hear Green soaring high as he expresses the songs through his guitar, but as if that wasn't enough he's backed up by Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums.

Brion Gysin was a true original who left his mark on modern culture when he introduced William Burroughs to the cut-up technique, but he also recorded a swathe of experimental, funk-fuelled releases including the 1983 single 'Kick/Junk'. That single has been expanded into this album for Wewantsounds, which features Don Cherry's trumpet work on 'Kick' amongst many other talented players. It's a freewheeling listen which takes its inspiration from many places, finding space for tender folk experimentation with an African twist on 'All Those Years' and embraces jazz as a vessel for sonic and rhythmic exploration when the moment calls for it.

Their 2021 self-titled debut was led by Nico Duportal on vocals and guitars with Hugo Deviers on percussion and guitar and Max Genouel on bass and keyboards and between them, they uniquely bridged these sounds as well as an earthy take on Americana despite the band originally hailing from the West and North of France. They aim to honour the African-American musical tradition while transporting its essence into new territory and Over The Fence continues this exploration by offering a fresh transatlantic sound that resonates with both past and present influences.

The same tune comes three more times on the flip with Opolopo remixing and adding some extra weight for the club. P-Vine in Japan have put this one out on CD before now but do the right thing and issue it once more here on vinyl. It's a classic album from the five-piece soul vocal fronted by Phil Perry who is still in the game as a solo artist. The band hailed from St. Louis, Missouri with a soul sound so rich and distinctive you will fall in love with it from the first harmony. Perry's own falsetto is the defining feature here with sumptuous strings and sublime rhythms helping him to soar to magical emotional heights. The original Dreaming Out Of Season album came on Paula (Jewell) Records in 1972.

The Texan group were signed to Mercury in 1978 and released a hotly acclaimed debut album, and while their talents matched the likes of Sly And The Family Stone and Earth, Wind & Fire, they remained criminally under-world, resulting in the band's disbandment after the release. So this is a salvaging effort worth your while; a whopping nine of the songs have never been heard before, and only a complementary two appeared on the original early 80s single. All produced by Michael Cooper of Con Funk Shun, the likes of 'My Funk', 'Never Felt Like This' and 'What Happened To Us' command an extra jerkiness and synthweight bolshiness not nailed by many of their much-more-famous contemporaries.

Now twenty years into his career, Dancing While Falling is the British-born, New York-based artist's most live sounding, euphoric and, in his own words, grown-up release to date.
