Review: First published in 1988, The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul was the second adventure written by Douglas 'Hitchhiker's Guide' Adams to feature the relentlessly intrigued, somewhat hapless and unsuccessful but nonetheless likeable and psychically-abled private detective, Dirk Gently. More recently catapulted to Netflix fame via the offshoot US series, for those who don't know a thing about all this, think literate British comedy with an overwhelming sense of mystery.
Back to this instalment, the yarn is named after the idea that there's a weird witching hour just before Sunday evening, when the weekend has concluded but the week is yet to begin, leaving working people in something of a limbo. This translates as a music industry guy asking Gently for help with a scythe-wielding monster that's stalking him, a job we assume isn't actually real. Review: Holy Basil turn their attention back to the rich seam of Italian library music with this choice reissue of Alessandro Alessandroni's Storie Di Guerra, originally released in 1972 on Octopus Records. It's a magical collection of themes and incidentals which range from psychedelic piano sequences to oddly angled cellos and squalling guitars, offering some of the edgiest material Alessandroni ever committed to tape. It's meant to evoke the sense of war, so you get the picture about the atmosphere the library music giant was aiming for when he recorded this one.

Jazz styles, bouncy breaks groovy pop, lounge moods, big bossa tunes and much more all feature along the most absorbing of musical trips. This is a true landmark of the genre and one of many classics from this wizard.

Review: Much of Alessandro Alessandroni's material is just being rediscovered now, thanks to all these reissues out of the Spettro New label. It's a deserved act, because the Italian multi-instrumentalist is a true pioneer of experimental music who, for one reason or another, never really permeated into the minds of leftfield enthusiasts in the same way as other like-minded musicians of the time. Il Tempo Dello Spirito is from 1971 and, alongside the plethora of his other albums, is a marvel; the album is a spiritual journey from start to end, and one that is capable of causing a tear to shed from the eyes of even the most string-hearted. Made up of apocrypha hymns, it is themes stirring, open-minded interpretation of church music that we've ever heard. A truly fascinating experience.

Review: Zone Black almost never was. The KPM music library originally commissioned Emil Amos to make a collection of new material which could be used in television and film. A little way into this process, the executive who did that hiring departed, and the artist opted to take what was there to the Drag City label in a bid to turn it into a proper album. The end result is something between the two. For all intents and purposes, plenty here fits into the library definition, but this is a far more personal, deeper and coherent take on the format. The foundations of library music - commercial use - soon thrown out with the dishwater, and instead the focus was on creating movements and arrangements that would hold up on their own, and create entire narratives independently, for themselves. Removed from what's happening on screen, you can live in these tracks and nowhere else.

Review: The classic sound of British library music is the inspiration for this third volume in ATA's The Library Archive series. It's another magnificently seductive and sophisticated collection of funk, jazz, spy-thriller soundtracks, late-night lounge moments and evocative atmospherics. Blaxploitation era composers such as Willie Hutch and Melvin Van Peebles and the genius of Roy Bud are particular preference points in this one and each cut is brilliantly authentic and lovingly crafted. This series started back in 2019 and four years later it is still going strong.

Review: After an impressive first volume last year, ATA Records are back with more of their Library Archive sounds. Inspired by greats such as KPM and DeWolfe but with a raw Leeds twist, this collection was produced on an array of old analogue gear across a series of sessions. Opener 'The Glass Eye' sets a psyched-out 60s funk feeling from the off then there are more upbeat and prickly pieces with lush flute leads likes like 'Windie Man' and raw, break-driven joints like the deep cut 'Fight Or Fuzz.' Word is that more volumes of this are planned in future, which we're glad to hear.

Review: The latest reissue from the reliable Sonor Music Editions camp comes from Italian jazz guitarist Angelo Baroncini and fellow axe-slinger Bruno Battisto D'Amario, a musician better known for his contributions to Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Music For Movement was initially recorded for an Italian music library in 1969, and saw the duo deliver a string of wonderfully psychedelic instrumental workouts. There are fuzzy, distortion-laden heavy rock smashers, surf-rock inspired curiosities and, most bizarrely of all, tracks that sound like Ennio Morricone after copious amounts of high-strength lysergic acid. It's utterly bonkers, but also really rather good. Sonor Music Editions only pressed up 500 copies, so cop one while you still can.

Review: A narrative. An odyssey. The journey of a lifetime. As the world locked itself away and the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, Battaglia stepped into the record studio and evidently fired up the ignition rockets. Travel in the literal sense may have been off the cards, but Season One certainly transports the listener through a deep and complex sonic tapestry, telling a tale of struggle from fear into hope and onto something altogether unique and new and enlightened. Plenty here has been inspired by the aural work of John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream, to name but two influences, but ultimately where Battaglia is taking us feels resolutely new. More so, tangibly unchartered. Out to the farthest reaches of the known galaxy and back again in a stunning collection of strange and beguiling electronic business.
