Review: Given that they're already released a couple of inspired EPs on Watergate Records, it's little surprise to find Hamburg duo the Adana Twins mixing the latest volume in the Berlin institution's ongoing compilation series. It's notable for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it relies heavily on a string of exclusives and previously unheard tracks, not only from the pair themselves, but also like-minded pals Acid Pauli, SBTH, Lehar, Aaaron, Andre Hommen and Musumeci (amongst others). Secondly, it's also rather good, with the musical Twins conjuring a dramatic, emotion-rich mix that effortlessly joins the dots between heady ambient, melodious tech-house and various forms of smooth and atmospheric late night techno.

Review: By the stuffy standards of German techno, Bulent "Butch" Gurler is something of a maverick - an eccentric whose seemingly never-ending output regularly pulls techno in a variety of different directions. Certainly, he's a great choice to mix the latest instalment of Berlin club Watergate's excellent mix series. Beginning in a deep and contemplative mood, Gurler works through a range of micro-genres in an undulating, entertaining, 22-track trawl through various contemporary inspirations. Along the way, you'll find cuts by The Horrorist (as remixed by Ricardo Villalobos), Redshape (the thrilling broken techno of "Goom"), and Shifted and Sigha. There's also a couple of exclusives from the man himself and regular studio partner Hohberg, including the exotic, Arabic pulse of "Thai Cubensis".

Review: Pets Recordings founders Catz 'N' Dogz have come a long way since making their production debut 10 years ago. It says a lot about their standing within the scene that the good folks at Berlin's legendary Watergate club have asked them to mix the latest volume in their long-running CD series. The Polish duo have taken the opportunity to show off a little, mixing up a 22-track selection that gets a perfect balance doffing a cap to house and techno history (see cuts from Mystic Bill and Todd Terry), representing underground heroes (Joakim, Willie Burns, Two Armadillos), and showcasing previously unreleased productions (Rogue D, a swathe of their own edits and original productions). The resultant mix is undeniably impressive, and a perfect snapshot of their DJ sets.

Review: Berlin venue Watergate have pulled of a bit of a coup for the fifteenth edition of their popular mix series, persuading New Jersey legend Kerri Chandler to drop his first DJ mix CD since 2008. Much has changed since then, with Chandler now pushing a style that fuses tech-tinged European deep house with his usual swinging US flavour. As a result, Watergate 15 may raise a few eyebrows in the Southport community, but should endear him to a while new audience. It's certainly a smooth and well thought-out mix, effortlessly segueing between tunes from the likes of Detroit Swindle, Jonny D, Huxley and No Artificial Colors. There's even a Jamie Jones remix present, which is definitely something of a surprise.

Review: The latest installment in Watergate's long-running mix series comes from Culoe De Song, a South African producer who made his name fusing tech-tinged European deep house sounds with musical and rhythmic influences from across the African continent. This mix encapsulates that warm and inviting sound, moving between inspired tracks from the likes of Mr Joe, &Me, Bodhi Satva, and Corinda. Almost half of the tracks are exclusive or previously unreleased, including a clutch of unheard tracks from the producer itself. It all adds up to an evocative and enjoyable set that perfectly showcases De Song's unique production and DJing style.

Review: As a paid-up member of Seth Troxler's extended Visionquest family, it's perhaps no surprise that Detroit new-schooler Lee Curtiss's contribution to the Watergate club's mix series is brimming with warm, touchy-feely tech-house. From start to finish, Watergate 08 sounds like an audio advert for the Visionquest sound; that pleasingly melodic fusion of heavy low-end, off-kilter synth pop posturing and tactile, MDMA-friendly electronic grooves. It's the sort of effortlessly delicious sound that lends itself well to a mix album, and as a result Watergate 08 is a lovely listen. With superb contributions from Footprintz, Maceo Plex, No Regular Play, Kim-Ann Foxman and Curtiss himself, there's plenty to get excited about.

Review: Some four years after dropping the Soft Pack set on Souvenir, Ruede Hagelstein delivers a follow-up for Watergate (in the process marking the German label's first foray into artist albums, rather than mix CDs). Pleasingly, Apophenia is hugely enjoyable, offering an attractive blend of breezy, soft-focus electronic rhythms and dreamy, Balearic chords with saucer-eyed melodies and some neat musical touches (see the snaking saxophone on "Daylight"). A few friends - most notably Pillowtalk, Hollis P Monroe and Overnite - swing by to lend a hand, but for the most part its' his solo efforts - particularly the wonky techno throb of "Moon Rabbit", pulsating ambience of "Pareidolia" and cheery dancefloor shuffle of "Found A Place" - that really stand out.

Review: You couldn't really get more 'Berlin' than Ruede Hagalstein, former minimal techno producer turned house devotee and long-time Watergate resident DJ. Here he gives a flavour of his recent sets at the legendary Berlin venue by mixing up a decidedly touchy-feely selection of deep house, cosmic disco, Scandolearic treats and atmospheric techno. Its 25 tracks range from the tactile electronics of Prins Thomas to the bumpin' disco-flecked deep house of Losoul, via the glistening goodness of Steve Moore's remix of Lower Dens and the effortless techno-soul of Carl Craig's recent Henrik Schwarz rework. Throughout, it's suitably melodic and full of unusual twists and turns (not least the loose, drum-laden madness of ESP Institute-affilliated band Pharoahs).

Review: Who do you pick to mix the next instalment in your series when the last from dOP was one of 2010s finest compilations of so far? You play it safe by calling in tried and tested, Essex born Berlin based club resident, Lee Jones. There's a slickness and clarity to this mix which perfectly suits the future disco that is Watergate, but with injections of real musicality all throughout things never become as perfect and digitalised as to blend pleasantly into the background. At first it may seem noodly, but the fluid lines and subtle progressions here are what keep you coming back for more. That and gentle freak-outs like "Voice Scatter", tear jerking piano moments like "Melancholie II (Lee Jones Watergate Remix)", multi-layered organic rollers like "YoYo" or the loose, suspended tension of minimal patters like "December". Thread together as sensitively as they are, these records make for a mix which wears its heart on its sleeve: it's beguiling but delicate and commanding yet tender.

Review: For the latest installment in their popular mix series, Berlin club Watergate has turned to Vakant regular and man-about-town Mathias Kaden. It's a good choice. Kaden has relatively broad tastes and isn't averse to playing forgotten classics and unlikely B-sides. As a result, Watergate 14 offers a fluid journey, opening with the dreamy, liquid house styles of DJ Koze, Alix Alvarez and Ron Trent, before seamlessly moving into more tech-tinged territory, with his own hypnotic "Troja" and Ricardo Villalobos' tactile "Hands Up" standing out. The energy levels continue to rise as the mix progresses, with the hissing cymbals, jacking beats of and squidgy synth bass of Alejandro Paz paving the way for a warmer, more US house-influenced sprint to the finish.

Review: For the latest installment in their eponymous mix series, Berlin's Watergate club has turned to resident DJ La Fleur, AKA Swedish producer Sanna Engdahl. The Power Plant boss delivers a typically fluid mix, gradually shifting through the gears in impressive fashion. After kicking off with the beatless gorgeousness of Matthias Mayer's "Miss Apre Gate" and decidedly slinky deep house cuts from Of Norway and Show B, she slowly builds up the tempo and intensity via choice tracks and reworks from Motor City Drum Ensemble, Peace Division, Miss Kittin and Hans Berg, finishing with the riotous techno pulse of Laurent Garnier's 1997 techno anthem "Flashback (Video Mix)".

Review: Fresh from launching their Second State Audio label, Mobilee regulars Pan-Pot (AKA Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Bendix) have mixed the latest instalment of the Watergate compilation series. They're no strangers to the infamous Berlin club, having been regulars behind the decks for the past few years. Given this relationship, it's perhaps unsurprising that Watergate 17 offers an impressive and thoroughly entertaining sprint through warehouse-friendly house, bleep-laden tech-house, wonkly acid and forthright techno, with a couple of shuffling electro jams thrown in for good measure. Pleasingly, they've also secured a wealth of previously unreleased tracks, including contributions from Marco Resman and Clint Stweart, and their own unheard hook-ups with Slam and Vincenzo.

Review: On the face of it, German DJ/producer Marco Resmann might not be the most obvious choice to mix the latest volume in Watergate's CD series. Yet it's an inspired choice, with the Upon. You label boss turning in an emotion-rich journey that never settles on any one particular flavour of house or techno. There are moments of inspired deepness and comfy, fireside-warm grooves, but these are tempered by rough and ready or darker selections that showcase his love of sweaty sessions in pitch-black basements. Taken as a whole, it's a fluid journey with a distinct "feel" - something that can't be said for many mix albums of a similar ilk.

Review: There's a big change in approach on the latest Watergate mix. Gone are the stripped back minimal house grooves or nouveau deep house sounds that had prevailed on previous mixes. In their place come tracks that show Solomun's love of funk, r&b and hip-hop. Alliance Ethnik's "Respect" sets the tone with its slinky groove and hip-house style call and response vocal, while Lucy Pearl's "Don't Mess With My Man" is cut from a similar cloth, its vocal funk signalling an end to linear rhythms. Solomun himself has taken inspiration from this 90s sound and his own "Kackvogel" is all hushed vocals and slick r&b bass. The mix also features the timeless Cologne techno-pop of Heiko Voss' "I Think About You", remixed by DJ Koze.

Review: Recorded live in Berlin last July, Soul Clap's contribution to the Watergate series is the soundtrack to what sounds like one the summer's best parties. Focusing predominantly on US house, the transitions are seamless but unfussy, and the mood throughout celebratory. From the deranged sax squall of Chocolate City's "Taxi Luv" to the sun-kissed jazzy keys and disco groove of Roy Davis Jnr's "The Beautiful One" to seductive soulful tones of Ron Trent's "Deep Art Sounds", this is a near flawless collection. It never veers into self-indulgence and features percussive, acid-led remixes from Francois K and Jori Hulkkonen as well as Mike Dunn's classic Chicago track, "Dance U Mutha". When Soul Clap get on the mic near the end to invite the crowd to an after party, this reviewer was half-hoping that it would be extended to anyone who heard this mix.

Review: The fourth album by house brothers the Schwarzs sees them venture farther in a song-based approach. Featuring vocal contributions from Khan, Mama and Emily Karpel, it moves from the gospel-tinged openers of "Heavy Weather" and "Free Falling" - which both feature Khan - to the brass-sampling underground acid of "Morgen Abend" and the deeper, atmospheric techno of "Dark Light". That's not to suggest that they have abandoned their electro house sound - check the grinding groove of "Hi Fu" - but the best moments do come when they depart from the script. "Echo Drug", which again features Khan on vocals, is a beautiful electronic torch song, while the dreamy keys of "Dings" brings a breathless quality to Tiefschwarz's music.

Review: Tiefschwarz have dropped a few mix albums in their time, but we can't remember one that's quite as fun as this one. Watergate 09 sees them return to their roots as fearless party starters, joining the dots between high quality house, US garage and techno spanning three decades. After a deep and introspective start, Ali and Basti really hit their stride on the back of Julio Bashmore's near anthemic "Father Father". What follows is a riotous trip through bumpin', groovy and downright sleazy fodder from such luminaries as MK, Frankie Knuckles, Kevin Saunderson, Masters At Work, Romanthony and, most pleasingly, Ron and Chez. Highly recommended.

Review: This year marks the ten year anniversary of Berlin's Watergate club opening its doors and to mark such a prestigious occasion they've put together this two-disc set chock full of exclusive, previously unreleased tracks from some of their favourite guests. The tracklist reads like a who's who of fashionable house and techno, while the music itself flits between warm deep house electronica (Henrik Schwarz, DOP), woozy deep-pop (Soul Clap, Benoit & Sergio), bumpin' house (Jesse Rose, DJ Sneak, Tiefschwarz), starlight tech-house (Subb-Ann & Hector, Mandy/Lopazz), and hard-to-define electronic goodness (Butch). While the contributions are not uniformly excellent, the standard is very high. In "Why", they've also managed to secure one of Maceo Plex's strongest tracks to date.

Review: Following last year's first homage to Berlin's version of the Amsterdam Dance event, BerMuDa, Watergate unleash a follow-up to celebrate this year's event. While there's the odd track from out-of-towners, it's largely designed as a celebration of Berlin's vibrant house and techno scene. Given the depth and quality of said scene, there's plenty to enjoy. It mostly sticks closely to the shuffling, atmospheric end of the spectrum, showcasing good quality cuts from the likes of Ame, Solomun, Steve Bug, Ellen Allien and DJ T. There's little we've not heard before - aside an Ame live re-make of Underworld's "Crocodile" - but it does a decent job in showcasing this side of Berlin's thriving scene.

Review: Three cheers for Berlin club institution Watergate, which this month celebrates 15 years of riverside raving in the heart of techno's liveliest city. To celebrate, they've gathered together two CDs worth of previously unreleased tracks from some of their nearest and dearest. Impressive contributions from resident DJs Matthias Meyer, Tiefschwarz, La Fleur, Cinthie and Jimi Jules are joined by equally inspired workouts from producers closely affiliated with the club, including Ellen Allien, Steve Bug, Hyenah (who has delivered some of the best music on Watergate's label in recent times) and Kollektiv Turmstrasse. While naturally rooted in techno, there's plenty of variety to be found throughout (think mutations of tech-house, techno, electronica and ambient), making it a fitting celebration of one of Europe's most iconic nighttime venues.

Review: Danish three piece WhoMadeWho came to light as a band doing snappy covers of club classics and new wave jams alike, but they've built a rich and varied career from that springboard to become a multi-faceted entity with many strings to their bow. Following the excellent Through The Walls album on Embassy Of Music, they've been snapped up by Watergate to record the 26th installment in the Berlin club's mix series. The group have made smart, emotionally charged selections that reflect their own sensibilities on the crossover between live band dynamics and the motorik throb of dance music. From Chaim and Ruede Hagelstein to Kenton Slash Demon and dOP, this is widescreen dance music played out with a tactile, human quality from start to finish.
