Review: The duo of Angus & Julia Stone share their sixth full-length album, Cape Forestier. A strikingly poignant and textured set of new recordings, the new LP immediately draws listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone's world; this is a cloaked, atmopsheric Aussie folk album that flaunts the couple's talents in utmost equal measure. Cape Forestier is also a self-described exercise in recognising "how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together." By that, they mean marriage: Cape Forestier's ear for sentiment knows few bounds, with stripped-back, bridal-gowned romances like 'The Wedding Song' commanding an adept ear for candid space and finger-plucking nostalgisms.

Review: Been there, done that, got remnants of a t-shirt. Anna of the North has obviously lived. Or at least that's the impression from "Dream Girl", an album that kicks, grooves, lolls and soothes in equal measure. Clearly the product of some very real experiences, and that's just the instrumentals. It's a record that wears everything on sleeve, calling on influences and styles that don't always find themselves centre stage when it comes to matters of the heart. There's more than a hint of hip hop on "Used To Be", the jazz inflections are crystal clear on "Lonely Life", R&B nuances spread across "When R U Coming Home". Themes range from challenges faced after finding real freedom - lack of direction and deep questioning of purpose - to problems that come with co-dependence and communication. Or lack thereof. Whatever relationship inspired this wasn't the simplest, but the things we learn from rarely are.

Review: In recent months, PIAS has re-released numerous albums from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, a cult post-hardcore band that found fame by developing their own distinctive brand of "doom-ridden jazz music". The latest album to get the reissue treatment is 2005's Geisterfaust. It originally appeared three years after Black Earth, a macabre and unsettling full-length that remains their most celebrated work. The five epic tracks that make up Geisterfaust are a little lighter in tone, though still thoroughly absorbing and cloaked in the band's usual hazy atmospheres. At times the music tends towards the melancholic, with 20-minute opener "Zeigefinger" offering a near perfect blend of slowly evolving ambient jazz motifs and foreboding drum hits.

Review: Bohren and Der Club of Gore has always been one of Germany's most intriguing and out there bands - a group rooted in grindcore and doom metal whose hard-to-pigeonhole output draws on a myriad of intriguing influences outside those intense styles. "Patchouli Blue", their tenth studio set since forming in 1992, is another moody and atmospheric gem: a challenging and experimental set that pits angst-ridden guitar textures against hallucinatory, David Lynch style cinematic sounds, hypnotic electronics and smoky, off-kilter jazz expressions. It's not a great departure from their previous albums, but when your sound is so distinctive - and inspired for that matter - why tear up the (Patchouli) blueprint?

Child I Will Hurt You
Review: Released in 2012, the Canadian electronic punks' third album marked a darker, more introspective turn for the duo. While their earlier records thrived on chaos and confrontation, III dives into a colder, more mournful landscape, channeling despair through glitchy synths and submerged vocals. The album opens with 'Plague', a storm of distorted beats and Alice Glass' haunted wails, immediately setting a bleaker tone. Tracks like 'Wrath of God' continue this suffocating atmosphere, layering harsh noise over mournful melodies in a way that feels both aggressive and fragile. Meanwhile, 'Sad Eyes' is full of catchiness amid the gloom, with a pulsing rhythm and almost danceable beat, though it's drenched in sorrow. 'Affection' is one of the most emotional tracks on the record, with shimmering synths and a distant, aching vocal performance that feels like reaching for something already lost. Closing track 'Child I Will Hurt You' strips things back even further, ending the album on a ghostly, minimalist note. III isn't an easy listen, but that's exactly its power. A harsh, beautiful collapse into darkness, not to mention Crystal Castles' most cohesive and affecting album.

Review: The second album from the Toronto-based Crystal Castles dives headfirst into a more polished pop direction while keeping the razor-sharp edge that made their eponymous debut unforgettable. It sees the duo tightening their sound, swapping the erratic juxtapositions of their first record for a more cohesive and dynamic approach. Tracks like 'Celestica', 'Suffocation' and 'Empathy' blend shimmering synths with biting distortion, striking a balance between beauty and bite. There's no shortage of potential singles here. The rave-tinged 'Baptism'. the hazy allure of 'Not in Love' and the frenetic energy of 'Vietnam' shows their knack for crafting tracks that feel equally at home on dancefloors and in headphones. While the shift toward a poppier sound might seem like a concession, the duo's grit remains intact, with moments like the chaotic 'Doe Deer' and the eerie closer 'I Am Made of Chalk' adding depth and darkness. Ethan Kath's production is layered and inventive, building a world of haunting synths and lo-fi beats, while Alice Glass' vocals morph between distorted whispers and guttural screams. Her versatility shines, avoiding the bratty screamer stereotype and instead presenting a nuanced and unsettling performance. The record's ambition is clear, as Crystal Castles evolve from their 8-bit beginnings into something more expansive and mature. A landmark album from a band who at the time, created a buzz like no other.

Review: Originally released in 1996, Endtroducing by DJ Shadow was a landmark in instrumental hip-hop i a moody, atmospheric collage built entirely from samples. This re-issue brings fresh attention to a record that still feels ahead of its time. The opener, 'Building Steam with a Grain of Salt', sets the tone with melancholic piano loops and chopped drums, while 'Midnight in a Perfect World' remains a standout i cinematic, soulful and haunting. 'Stem/Long Stem' drifts through shifting moods, showcasing Shadow's masterful sense of pacing and texture. What made the original so revolutionary was its ability to turn dusty vinyl into something emotionally resonant, and this re-issue serves as a reminder of its lasting influence. Not just a beat tape, Endtroducing is an album with real depth, atmosphere and intent i one that rewards full, uninterrupted listening. Nearly 30 years on, it still sounds like no-one else.

DJ Shadow - "Lost & Found (SFL)"

Review: Lost and Found is an instrumental hip-hop landmark that captures DJ Shadow and DJ Krush at the height of their powers. Originally a label-defining early release on Mo Wax, both sides of this split single set the blueprint for sample-heavy, cinematic beat-making that still resonates today. Shadow's layered textures and Krush's dusty groove sensibilities complement each other perfectly, both tracks blending eerie atmospheres with deep, off-kilter rhythm, bridging Tokyo and California in a haze of vinyl crackle and head-nod funk. Essential listening i not just for fans of Shadow or Krush, but for anyone curious about the roots of modern downtempo and trip-hop.

Review: London-born, LA-based duo Eli & Fur present their second ever album, Dreamscapes, finding inspiration in the transformations that occur in the mid-to-after-rave hours of dusk and dawn. Fleshing out the sonic interpretation of the veil between self and surroundings, which grows thin in those early hours, Dreamscapes is a 15-track homage to the cathartic musings of our most solitary wanderings of all corners of the night and the flashes in between. From the slowly risen breakbeat transcendents of 'Missing You' to the moody progressive burbles of 'My Reflection', this is a subtly impressive album, one that holds fast to the deep house and tech in which Eli & Fur have always worked, yet unfolds its dreamiest and bleariest ends.

Review: The fact that you have bands that also got their first break through Rough Trade, like Howler, Palma Violets and The Strokes, borrowing somewhat from The Feelies' playbook is testament to their stylish handling of handmade rock n' roll. Their first two records, released in the 80s, are largely considered classics, but this album released in 1991 is as strong as anything in their back catalogue. It's also a terrific parting gift to fans as they ended up taking a 17-year break after it, reforming in 2008 to play a gig with Sonic Youth and together ever since. This album is immaculately recorded yet true to their live sound, as they set up in the studio in much the same way that they set up on stage. It's a driving, propulsive yet inventive affair offering up as much for the cranium as it does the hips. The band are commonly compared to Velvet Underground and 'Find A Way' has a touch of the VU classic 'Heroin' about it. 'Decide', however, feels more Stones-y, while 'Real Cool Time' does justice and then some to The Stooges' original. That they bring to mind other great rock bands is testament to the fact they are in that league and not mere pastiche.

Review: Melbourne's Highschool (Luke Scott, Rory Trobbiani) continue to ride the wave of nostalgic post-punk, following an aesthetic pattern that has defined their work at least since 2020's initial run of singles - theirs is singular in its embrace of lo-fi and an unusual mixing approach, through which the lyrical content only barely pokes through a half-remembered smog (we love it). Now, 'Accelerator' comes as their first mini-album/EP, their second diversion via PIAS; the five-tracker meditates on everything from melancholic summer months ('August 19') to fantasy recollections ('She Took You To Narnia') to UFO religions ('Heaven's Gate'), nailing something between the washed-out but no less festival-ready riffs of Beach House and the laconic edge of Double Virgo.

The album showcases the group's tight-knit chemistry and impeccable flow, delivering razor-sharp rhymes over hypnotic beats that are now well-known as their signature. With its infectious groove and insightful lyrics, Quality Control is a testament to the group's mastery of the genre and their commitment to delivering high-calibre music that is also full of timeless tunes that not only celebrate the art of hip-hop but also serve as a reminder of the importance of staying true to one's craft.

Review: Sheffielder Matthew Relton - initially known as Kidnap Kid, but now releasing as Kidnap - has been on quite a musical journey since first emerging as a boisterous garage and UK bass producer early last decade. His first full-length, 2020's Grow, showcased his maturation as an artist by focusing on songs and instrumentals that tended towards the tactile and picturesque. On this follow-up, he's leaned further into the "artist maturing" theme via a blend of picturesque songs (voiced by regular collaborator Ian Stannard, Gabrielle Apin and others') and ambient instrumentals shot through with yearning, oblique nostalgia, delicate instrumental arrangements and plenty of sweeping, cinematic chord sequences. It's not pop, per se, but it is hugely accessible with tons of crossover potential. Expect to see him on festival stages in the months and years ahead.

Review: Erland Oye and Eirik Grambek Boe have a lengthy history together. Long before they formed Kings of Convenience the pair were in the same class at school, writing comedic raps about their teacher then founding Skog ("forest"), their first joint stab at 'serious' music. Today, the duo have a string of gold and silver certified albums behind them. This is one. Originally released in 2009, 15 years on Declaration of Dependence still sounds as calmly breathtaking as it did back then. Quiet, soft, gentile, yet anything but twee, the sound straddles the line between indie pop and indie folk, and also represented the start of a new era in music distribution - getting its initial release as an exclusive for subscribers of a certain streaming platform, but that's another story.

With standout tracks like 'Homesick', 'Misread', and the Feist collaboration 'Know-How', this album became a treasured gem for fans. Review: After a three-year break, Swedish producer and DJ La Fleur is back with 'Vasen', her long-awaited debut album. The pandemic led her to pause her music career as she returned to Sweden from Berlin, putting her Pharmaceutical Science degree to work in Stockholm's hospitals. This significant life shift followed a decade of running her Power Plant label and accomplishments like being named Mixmag's breakthrough artist, releasing an Essential Mix, and performing at major festivals like Creamfields and Awakenings. During this hiatus, La Fleur reflected on her artistic direction through her challenging time. Originally planning to release her debut in 2020, she instead waited until the timing felt right. 'Vasen' is a sleek, emotionally resonant exploration of house and techno, a collection born from both personal and musical growth that finally feels ready for the world to experience.

Review: A number of the many great full lengths penned by alternative pop star Roisin Murphy are currently being reissued and here we have Take Her Up To Monto!, a bold and adventurous exploration of electronic pop from 2016. It is another one that showcases Murphy's fearless creativity and boundary-pushing approach to music where distinct vocals, coupled with innovative production, create a dynamic and immersive listen. There is an infectious energy to 'Mastermind' and dreamy allure to 'Ten Miles High,' amongst a wide mix of influences from other genres and experimental soundscapes that confirmed once more than Murphy' is a true visionary.

Review: There's no better example of a follow-up LP this week than Nation Of Language's 'A Way Forward', which brings up the rear and engulfs 'Introduction', the band's 2020 debut. Put simply, this album is krautrocky, whereas the last one was closer to synthpop. This subtle change came as a result of Ian Devaney, Aidan Noell, and Michael Sue-Poi attempting to "trace the roots of their sound", "hoping to learn something from the early influences of our early influences", from big names like Can through to Laurie Spiegel and Cluster. Recorded through the past year's lockdowns, a long-form mood of relentless melancholy is the result, blending driving drum machines with intense reverb and yearning male vocals - 'The Grey Commute' and 'Former Self' being emotive highlights. Keep an eye for the limited red and blue split vinyl version of this one.

Review: Marc Collin hit lucky when as Nouvelle Vague he decided to interpret some post-punk classics in a bossa nova style over 20 years ago. Initially thought of as a one-off project, Nouvelle Vague was hugely successful and led to further albums, critical acclaim, TV adverts and riches beyond his wildest dreams (maybe). The fifth instalment proves that 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' by once again re-working post-punk era classics into a laid-back easy listening style. 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' is a shockingly well-made addition to the project, and, this being 2023, is the crispest and cleanest selection no less.

Review: The new album from Porij, Teething, beckons you to transcend the confines of dance music as merely a genre defined by beats and rhythms. It invites you into a realm of its own - a sanctuary where you can lose yourself. The album pays homage to the visceral language of dancefloor sounds that have stirred emotions across generations. While lyrically delving into life's complexities, musically, it offers liberation. Previously self-produced, Porij enlisted renowned producer David Wrench, known for his work with iconic artists like Frank Ocean and FKA Twigs. Under his guidance, Teething evolves from a live-focused endeavor to a captivating pop-infused experience.

Review: The new album by Quantic - aka. multi instrumentalist, DJ, composer and producer Will Holland - is in many ways an evolution. Now twenty years into his career, Dancing While Falling is the British-born, New York-based artist's most live sounding, euphoric and, in his own words, grown-up release to date. Capturing the beginnings of every good person's revelatory movement from an individual to a collective spirit, Holland originally began the album in his Brooklyn studio, before realising that he didn't just want to make a record that reflected his 'singular pandemic wormhole', but rather one that tapped into the essential togetherness of the human condition. So too does this record explore themes of connection felt through, and made more intense by, the antagonistic bouts of loneliness that characterised COVID-19. Influenced by legendary artists in the scene like Bohannon and Larry Levan, Quantic wanted to make a disco -eaning album at first; "I'm really interested in Latin music and Afro Caribbean rhythms and I think there's a really amazing point in history where the emergence of those rhythms and its combination with American soul sparked what we now know as disco," he says. This PIAS extended edition comes one year on from its initial 2023 release, Quantic here expands on his work by adding a ream of extended versions.

Review: Emitt Rhodes' self-titled album, released in 1970, proves his pioneering approach to home recording: made in his home studio, it came at a time when union rules mandated that albums released by major labels had to be recorded in professional studios. Ergo, the fact that it was made at home couldn't be disclosed on the cover. Despite this, the original LP featured a playful message in the runout groove, stating "Recorded at Home" in humorous title case. Rhodes had initially intended to call the album Homecooking, but the label opted for his name instead. Using a four-track recorder, Rhodes forged the instrumental tracks before transferring them to an eight-track with which to add vocals, enhancing the sound with a higher-quality microphone - clearly that's as much as grandiose a story as we're getting on the BTS front. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard chart, with 'Fresh As A Daisy' peaking at number 54 on the Hot 100, and 'Lullabye' finding its niche in the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums.

Review: It wasn't planned that Stereolab would manage to keep up their 'Switched On' series beyond the compilation's first 1992 release, but now, hey ho, we're onto its fifth edition. Unlike the first volume, the newer editions in the series such as volume 5 here lean more towards rarities, odds and ends; 'Robot Riot', for example, was originally written to accompany a Charles Long sculpture, and 'Yes Sir! I Can Moogie' was originally only released on a specific format for the Wurlitzer jukebox. Every track has a similar backstory, and it's this kind of analogue worship we love so dearly.

The 16-track LP offers up his famously dynamic techno sound and rich synth designs with element of dance floor clout underpinning each tune. From his beginnings in Frankfurt's 90s techno scene to collaborations with icons like Depeche Mode, Moby and Extrawelt, Tresher's career has been marked by critically acclaimed releases and False Gods is one of his most ambitious projects yet. It's an accomplished and introspective journey through modern electronic music enriched by collaborations with some notable friends.

After the critically acclaimed Born Sandy Devotional and In The Pines, The Triffids joined Island Records to create their most epic album yet, produced by Gil Norton (best known for his work with Pixies and Echo and The Bunnymen). Calenture hones in on the band's creative peak, abandoning the lo-fi sound of In The Pines and returning to the lush, majestic style of Born Sandy Devotional. The album is a rich vast array of sound, brimming with lush arrangements and poignant lyrics, making it arguably their most accessible work - every track resonates with depth and excellent songwriting.

Review: Originally released in 1986, this album showcases The Triffids' exceptional blend of folk, rock, and post-punk. Featuring David McComb's haunting vocals and lush instrumentals, In The Pines takes you on a journey through atmospheric soundscapes. This album, recorded in the Australian outback on a modest budget, highlights the band's raw talent and creativity. Tracks like 'Love and Affection' and the cover of Bill Anderson's 'Once a Day' exhibit their range, from sharp electric guitar riffs to country influences. In the Pines seemed an eccentric career move for The Triffids, who were poised for major success. Retreating to the outback, the band created an album of modest majesty. Haunted by desolation, tracks like the gothic folk waltz of the title track and the intense 'Kathy Knows' stand out. Yet, the album is also filled with camaraderie. Often compared to Bob Dylan and The Band's The Basement Tapes, In the Pines captures The Triffids' infectious joy in making music, solidifying its place as a timeless piece of artistry. In The Pines is perfect for lovers of sweeping, melancholic sounds.
