Review: Fantasia by Juan Almeida is the next album in My Bongo's faultless Cuban Classics series and is a true outlier that you (we) find hard to put into any specific existing category. Almeida is a key figure in the Cuban revolution who also composed over 300 songs. This album, produced by Rafael Somavilla, is an eclectic instrumental journey that draws on Latin jazz-funk, trippy electronics and classical orchestration to at times feel like a grand, ghostly film score with repeating passages evoking spectral images while at others it explodes into exotic funk, psychedelic tones, and Afro-Cuban percussion. This one is a deep listen that is much sought-after by collectors so makes for another great reissue.

Review: Ana Frango Eletrico's first ever reissue, Little Electric Chicken Heart, follows up 2023's most recent record Me Chama De Gato Que Eu Sou Sua. Surfacing after Mr. Bongo were met with a string of requests to reissue the album not long after its original release in 2019, we're once more compelled to consider the album's merits and what makes the enjoyment of it tick. More of an establishment of style and talent than an exploration of a concept, the album is noted for its fusion of chamber pop, rock and samba, across a vintage palette that defies any overarching categorisation.

Review: Mr Bongo look back to the damn fine Latin funk and rock-infused soul sounds of Coke's 197 self-titled opus for their next well-chosen reissue project here. It is their only album, sadly, but is a brilliant mix of Miami Latin-funk, psychedelic garage rock and gritty soul sung mainly in English. It blends bright funk drumming, flavourful organs and zesty horn with Paul Garcia (guitar), Ariel Hernandez (bass), Ruben Perez (drums), Jose Rubio (keys) and Peter Fernandez (vocals) all produced by Mato. The record was popular in Miami but faded due to limited promotion and a Coca-Cola trademark dispute but was later rediscovered by collectors, with standout tracks like 'Na Na,' 'Got to Touch Your Face' and 'Te Amo Mas' all became staples of Latin sets.

Review: Mr Bongo present a staunch retro vision of Cuban-born violinist Alfredo De La Fe, one of whose sonographic creams was the debut salsa-and-more fusion album, Alfredo. Based between New York and Colombia, Alfredo worked with many of the greats in Latin music, including Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colon and Roberto Roena, as well as disco and soul icons Sylvester and Aquarian Dream. For a debut solo record, Alfredo is a real charm offensive, and a valiant experiment at that, mixing Latin dancefloor crunches with De La Fe's own, unusually additive violin, placed centre stage as he solos. The record - a favourite of legendary New York club The Paradise Garage - tonally shifts past the halfway mark, eschewing the A-side's chroma-jazzy clavier discombobulations for an early four-to-the-floor, daresay proto deep house excursion, 'Hot To Trot'.

Review: The vibrant Cuban music scene of the 1970s thrived with creativity, and FA-5's self-titled 1976 album perfectly captures that energy. Part of Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics series, the record blends Latin rock, funk, soul, disco, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into an eclectic and captivating sound. The funk-heavy opener, 'Muevete Con Las Fuerzas Del Corazon' features an infectious bassline, lively horns and drum breaks, setting the tone for a genre-hopping journey. With standout tracks like the Latin disco-funk 'Casa De Ladrillo' and a cover of Commodores' 'Brick House' this hidden gem, which was produced by Tony TaNo, is a must-have for both fans and collectors.

Review: For the last decade, John Gomez and Nick The Record's freewheeling Tangent parties have proved popular in London, offering dancers the chance to shake their stuff to a wide selection of superb (and normally insanely rare) records over a high quality soundsystem. The pair's first Tangent compilation, which arrives via Mr Bongo, naturally offers a superb reflection of their approach and is packed with must-have cuts. For proof, check the proto-house era dubbed-out boogie of King B's 'Love Is Crazy', the sun-splashed Brazilian gorgeousness of 'Laberinto' by PERIKAS, the spaced-out headiness of Hidrogenese's 'La Carta Era Muy Larga (Dub)', the heavy batacuda business of 'Nira Gongo' by Conjuto Baluartes' and the dub disco-flecked, deep house brilliance of LTA's 'What Comes To Ya'.

Review: To celebrate ten years of one of London's most loved underground club nights, Tangent, Mr Bongo are thrilled to launch this new compilation series. Crafted by its two residents, John Gomez and Nick the Record, it aims to transmit a taste of Tangent's spirit: a party rooted in inclusivity and open-mindedness, whose name captures the spontaneous switches in musical direction that are a defining element of their nights. For the compilation, the pair have cherry-picked a selection of their prized, rare and dancefloor-ready tracks from around the globe, that have soundtracked the past decade of parties. Spanning live-recorded disco, Brazilian boogie and weighty lovers' rock, this selection of rare sonic meats is a prized procuring, the consistent quality of which you likely won't be able to track down in many other contexts.

Review: Raul Gomez's 1977 instrumental album, part of Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics series, is a neat blend of orchestral disco, jazz-funk and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Released on Cuba's Areito label, it showcases Gomez's talents as a composer, producer, and arranger. The record defies categorization, seamlessly transitioning between mood music, library/soundtrack mastery, and cosmic-Latin funk. With the Orquesta EGREM in full force, the album features soaring strings, vibrant horns, and infectious rhythms. Standout tracks like 'Mi Samba Carnaval' and 'Tema De La Sierra' offer breathtaking drum breaks and romantic film music impressions, while '6 Son' delivers a mind-bending psych guitar experience. 'Dacapo' adds Brazilian percussion and scat vocals to the mix, creating a dynamic and energetic Latin shuffle. Instrumental is a great example with Cuba's rich musical heritage thanks to Gomez's exceptional creativity.

This Miami-based disco-funk project headed up by the drummer and producer features Latin, funk and percussive grooves that have gone on to influence generations of hip-hop and dance music producers. It is thought to have been sampled over 125 times by legends like DJ Shadow, N.W.A. and Run-D.M.C. after initially gaining fame via Ultimate Breaks & Beats in 1986. This Afro-Cuban-funk gem combines psych rock with deep funk, cementing its status as a 70s Cuban masterpiece and a favourite with those who know. Despite releasing only two albums and a few singles, the band was highly influential in Cuba and gained international recognition through 2000s compilations. Produced by Raul Gomez and featuring Cuban music heavyweights, the album blends traditional Cuban Son with funk and psychedelic elements. Review: Pique is the remarkable debut solo album from Dora Morelenbaum, a key figure in Brazil's burgeoning music scene and a member of the talented band Bala Desejo. Following her initial EP Vento de Beirada, Pique marks Dora's ascent as a significant solo artist, blending boldness with grace, bridging Brazil's musical heritage with contemporary grooves, incorporating funk, MPB, disco, soul, r&b and jazz, all infused with an indie pop sensibility thanks to co-producer Ana Frango Eletrico. Opening with the sun-kissed 'Nao Vou Te Esquecer,' Pique transitions into the infectious funk of 'Venha Comigo' and 'Sim, Nao.' Tracks like 'A Melhor Saida' and 'Petricor' offer a more relaxed, introspective vibe, while 'VW Blue' showcases virtuosic jazz-funk, and the title track delivers radiant MPB. To celebrate this milestone, Mr Bongo has repressed her legendary 1976 album, The Devil Is Loose, on gold vinyl. Each track on The Devil Is Loose highlights Puthli's celestial style and sumptuous vocal range, supported by orchestral-infused, disco-enhanced instrumentation. The album transitions seamlessly from the infectious funk of 'Flying Fish' to the cosmic transcendence of the title track, and the choir-channelling 'Say Yes.' Review: Finn Rees, a Tasmanian native now based in Melbourne, offers a stunning debut with Dawn Is..., a concept album inspired by the rugged landscapes of his homeland. With a blend of ambient textures and bold instrumentation, Rees takes listeners on a sonic journey from inception to intimacy. Supported by a full ensemble of brass, strings, guitar, and vocals, Rees crafts a musical narrative that unfolds like a cinematic experience. From the harp-laden opening of 'Looking Up' to the soulful journey of 'Behind Me Now' and the intimate piano-and-strings of 'As It Passes,'each track contributes to the album's evocative arc. While drawing inspiration from jazz luminaries like Alice Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, Dawn Is... displays Rees's own talent and versatility as a bandleader and composer. With its warm analogue aesthetic and celestial bursts of synthesisers, this record is a standout in the contemporary jazz scene, promising a rising profile for Rees and his collaborators.

It is a deep, textured jazz record that skilfully blends vintage vibes with modern vitality all while also paying homage to jazz greats and exploring new ideas with Melbourne's top talent. Known for his work with 30/70 and Elle Shimada, Finn shifts from groove-based jazz to spotlight the piano and arrangements on his mission to create a rich, colourful microcosm driven by hope and curiosity. The album spans from the optimistic 'Looking Up' and 'Lagoon' to the intimate 'Ablaze' and 'As It Passes.' It is a delight to listen to and will appeal to fans of everyone from Alice Coltrane to Herbie Hancock.

Collaborations with esteemed artists like Liniker and Luedji Luna weave themes of love, heartbreak, and discovery with reflections on violence, passion, and irony. From the grand choral opener 'Forro Violento' to the funk-infused brilliance of 'Nao Vou Reclamar de Deus,' Rubel's storytelling prowess shines. Review: This timely reissue features a curated selection of standout tracks from Seu Jorge's acclaimed 2002 debut album Carolina (which was originally titled Samba Esporte Fino). The release marked the beginning of Jorge's international fame and was quickly followed by acting roles in City of God and Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic where his Portuguese covers of the late great David Bowie became iconic. The record was co-produced by Mario Caldato of the Beastie Boys association and mixes up samba, funk and jazz into a timeless sound full of colour and soul for the warmer months of the year. Tracks like the anthemic title song, the funk-tinged 'Mangueira' and the infectious 'Tu Queria' remain essential showcases Seu Jorge's effortless musical charisma.

Review: The candidly titled Ananda Shankar And His Music hears its first official reissue via Mr Bongo. Released on His Master's Voice in 1976, the album is a sublime collage of sitar-funk, traditional Indian classical music and psychedelic grooves, from the Indian sitarist, composer and musician. Nephew to India's legendary sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, Ananda's musical family and upbringing led to a deep respect and love of the wealth of music that emanated from his birthplace of Almora, North India. However, touring America in his 20s revealed a latent love for psychedelic rock, and this debut LP captures that obsession to a T. The fusion of cyclic, North Indian tala with Americana music is best heard on the likes of 'The Lonely Rider', which envisages the a sonorous Sonoran Desert set against an action-sequenced sitar and guitar strumming. 'Back Home' achieves similar results, with a Western, soul balladic walking bass mixing effortlessly with the sitar's distinctive, tweeting "bendre" - an exotic but compelling combo.

Soyuz follows up their 2022 debut Force Of The Wind with a stark but subdued reissue of their second album, Ii, released three years earlier in 2019. The album captures a pivotal evolution in the band's career, the recordings giving a snapshot of what would become their sound on Force Of The Wind, yet with echoes of avant-psychedelic-pop footprints from yester years. Produced at a time when bandleader Alex Chumak had moved from Minsk to Kyiv, torn between the need to try something new and the homesickness it brought about, Ii nicely captures the slow burn of homesickness extended across a long bouts of travel and transience, through stylistic recollections of Mikita Arlou, Ethiopian jazz and Italian library music.

Review: Released in November 2019 on the band's own label, Surprise Chef's debut album, All News Is Good News, blends retro and contemporary styles in a unique instrumental soul experience. With cinematic arrangements reminiscent of David Axelrod and Janko Nilovic, it showcases both light and dark tones, dissonance, and positivity. It also reflects a deep knowledge of the 1970s soul scene and the ability to bring that to something that remains distinctly modern. Recorded live to tape, the album features guest musicians and who add to Surprise Chef's cinematic-soul sound on a record that will resonate with both seasoned fans and new listeners alike.

Review: Juan Pablo Torres's 1978 release Algo Nuevo is a vibrant addition to the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series, displaying the trombonist's eclectic blend of jazz-funk and Afro-Cuban styles. The album kicks off with the energetic 'Pan Caliente,' a fusion of Latin percussion, horns, and infectious vocals, augmented by cosmic synth touches that give it a modern edge. Tracks like 'Guajira 2001' offer a future-forward take on traditional Cuban dance music, while 'Cacao' delivers a funky, percussive groove reminiscent of electronic disco anthems. 'Elvira' highlights the album's psychedelic essence with its deep Latin rhythms and trippy synths. Throughout Algo Nuevo, Torres explores a variety of Afro-Cuban genres, infusing them with mindbending cosmic influences. The result is a dynamic and diverse album that offers plenty of dancefloor-ready tracks as well as more downtempo numbers. With its blend of traditional rhythms and contemporary sounds, Algo Nuevo stands as another shining example of Cuba's rich musical heritage.

Review: The next release in the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series is Juan Pablo Torres' iconic 1977 album Super Son. Featuring tripped-out rumbas, psych-Afro-Latin funk, and quirky orchestrated tracks with a big band horn section, it showcases Torres' band Algo Nuevo. Torres, also director of Estrellas De Areito, released numerous albums on Areito/EGREM. Despite post-revolution censorship, Cuban musicians enjoyed artistic freedom, leading to 1970s and '80s experimentation. Super Son exemplifies this, with tracks like 'Y Que Bien,' 'Pastel En Descarga,' 'Con Aji Guaguao,' and 'Son Riendo' blending psychedelic funk and Afro-Cuban rhythms into a joyful, energetic masterpiece.

Review: This limited edition green vinyl version of Horse Meat Disco's latest disco compilation - the first volume in a projected series - colourfully represents our jealous hunger for DJ, selector and founding member Luke Howard's hand-picking talents. This brilliant bogeyman of Brazilian boogie brings a lifetime of lived expertise to this exercise in choice, capturing over 20 years' worth of passion for a highly particular movement - one that blent classic choro, MPB and samba motifs with emergent synthetic bops emergent in Brazil in the 70s and 80s. The mood across the comp is singularly sunny, spanning one-off boogying contributions from bossa nova pioneer Marcus Valle ('Parabens') to more dedicated Afro disco-technologists, such as Lafayette and Os Carbanos, the latter of whose 'Passaro Selvagem' is a real ahead-of-its-time slap-basser.

Review: The liberation of Mali from French rule in 1960 led to an explosive musical renaissance, and on this latest 2xLP compilation, Mr Bongo seek to remonstrate the nation's excellence in the face of much strife. After 1970, amid revived drives to document many national and regional music productions from the West African nation, Malian culture underwent a fertile transformation, with state-sponsored bands and orchestras able to record with sound engineers for the first time. Compiled by French writer and journalist Florent Mazzoleni and Mr Bongo's own David Buttle, we hear here the likes of Ousmane Kouyate & Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Rail Band, Les Messagers du Mali, Mystere Jazz de Tombouctou and many more, where bright, fuzz-packed tones whirl about our ears in serene squalls of balafon-driven funk, rumba, wassoulou, jeli and blues.

Review: In full gatefold LP form comes the latest Brazilian boogie compilation by Horse Meat Disco, selected selectors of the best rarities in the disco genre. Curated mostly by founding member Luke Howard and with added consultations from crewmates James Hillard, Severino Panzetta and Jim Stanton, a lifetime of frolicking among samba troupes, carnival processions and yearly Rio visitations went into the choices you hear here, consummating one man's intuitive taste for a sound whose appeal stretches far wider than its nation of origin. Mr Bongo invited Howard to their Brighton HQ for an extended on-site selection, proving its off-the-cuff expertise: early electronica experiments from Ze Carlos blend voluminously with Jorge Ben pennings and mouth-watering Luiza Maura 7" cullings, proving a hand-picking that is at once eclectic and unifying.
