Review: Like a cool sea breeze on a hot summer's day, First Word is keeping things fresh with another dancefloor rocker for the selectors. Our resident jazzy beat maestro Cedar has been hard at work in the studio, orchestrating an EP of broken beat bombs to set floors ablaze. Influenced by 70s soul-jazz/funk and 80s electronica his tracks blend lush pads and jazzy overtones with finely tuned beats & rhythms. "Cedar Is My Man" Domu, Co-op, "Cedar mixes are the bomb!" Zero dB, Ninja Tune, "The coolest EP I've heard this year" Afronaught, Bugz In The Attic.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

If you've yet to succumb to the charms of Children of Zeus - and there can't be many out there who haven't - then this "odds and ends" LP offers a neat introduction. Five of the seven tracks have been plucked from the Manchester crew's previous full-length excursions, while the other two - seductively soulful two-step garage reworks of "Vibrations" and "Slow Down" by fellow Manchester resident Zed Bias - have previously been almost impossible to get hold of. Setting aside the club-ready remixes, what "Excess Baggage" proves is that Children of Zeus are one of British music's most essential outfits right now, delivering sensual and life-affirming cuts that brilliantly blend the best aspects of hip-hop, R&B and modern soul.

Goodbye For Now (7:14)
Charge It To The Game (4:32)
Light In The Darkness (8:25)
Who Looks Inside, Awakes (7:18)
Review: The Description Is Not The Described is a much anticipated debut solo release from the hotly tipped Nathaniel Cross. Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed him The Quincy Jones Of Catford for his mad and diverse skills, and the arranger and trombone player has walls backed up that talk with action. He has recorded and performed with pop giants like Stormy, Emile Sande, Kano and Solange and worked on both Moses Body albums. on his own EP, he masterly draws on the rich heritage of black music from gospel to soul to hip hop and dancehall, but arranges them all in slick jazz styles.

Journey To Love (feat Vanity Jay - Andromeda Jones remix) (5:43)
Review: If you've not yet copped the debut album from Cardiff twosome Darkhouse Family, The Offering, we'd suggest tracking down a copy - it was one of last year's most overlooked beats albums, joyously joining the dots between hip-hop, jazz and neo-soul. Here First Word offers up "An Extra Offering" featuring a quintet of new remixes of album tracks. The quality threshold naturally remains high throughout, with Kaidi Tatham's synth bass-propelled, head-nodding rework of "The Accession" providing an early high watermark. Naturally, DJ Spinna's two reworks are both superb. His "Galactic Soul" version of "Another World" is a string-laden, house tempo synth-soul treat, while the "Galactic Funk" remix of "Just So You Know" brilliantly wraps spacey synth bass and sweet soul vocals around a slipped, off-kilter hip-hop rhythm.

Light It Again (4:46)
Batter (6:20)
Mardi (5:45)
Review: There's much to admire about this first solo outing in two years from rising soul-jazz star Allysha Joy, which sees her appear on DJ Gilla's First Word label for the very first time. Check first superb opener 'Watercolours', an opaque and drowsy chunk of horizontal neo-soul bliss rich in warming instrumentation, before admiring the more up-tempo, jazz-fired fuzziness of 'Light it Again', where the Australian's confident vocal performance rides a backing track that reminded us a little of Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black operation. Elsewhere, 'Batter' is a slow and elastic slab of broken soul, while closing cut 'Mardi' brilliantly joins the dots between jazz, jazz-funk and broken beat.

Takuya Kuroda - "Fade" (KEARL remix) (5:20)
Teotima - "But I Can't" (K15 remix) (4:35)
Review: Earlier this month, First Word Records dropped an epic, digital-only compilation in which members of the label's large family of artists either collaborated with or remixed each other. This 12" boasts four of the collection's undoubted highlights. The EP begins with a simply stunning Kaidi Tatham remix of Allysha Joy's soul-jazz treat 'Better' - think deep broken beat meets liquid jazz-funk and sultry neo-soul - and ends with a fiercely sub-heavy and surprisingly spaced out K15 broken beat rework of Teotima's 'But I Can't'. Sandwiched in between you'll find a jazz-funk-goes-bruk re-wire of Takuya Kuroda's 'Fade' by KEARL (that's K15 and Darkhouse Family's Earl Jeffers) and a wonderful fusion of squelchy synth-jazz and broken beat courtesy of Quiet Dawn and Sarah Williams White.

Review: With One Self's Yarah Bravo on MC Duties "Fire" does exactly what it says on the tin, as Miss B spits like an angelic firecracker over the Kid's colossal bomb-like beats. The flip is a low-slung jazz workout, straight out of a 1940s speak easy, that rocks floors and drops jaws. Ellington would be proud. "Kid Kanevil makes some splendid music. I am very in to the track The Low-Fi Club" Mr Scruff, "Amazing, I cant believe how good the production is on this" Krafty Kuts, "Sounds like ye got a club banger on your hands" Louis Slipperz (Task Force/Rawdog)

Review: Wonky meets jazz in this impressive new jazz mini-LP from Japan. Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger born in Kobe, Japan and based in New York City. 'Midnight Crisp' is Takuya's seventh studio album, entirely self-produced and following 2020's highly acclaimed 'Fly Moon Die Soon'. Learning jazz in a higher education environment, he's reapplied his skills to a new solo outing here, blending with his one true loves, afrobeat and hip-hop. The ensuing album is one of myriad midnight moods, tempered by many a virtuosic and mournful piano, digitally-edited drum brush, and trilling trumpet from the mouth of Kuroda himself.

Review: Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger from Kobe, Japan but now based in New York City. Midnight Crisp was his seventh studio album and now First World has had a selection of cuts from it remixed. 'Choy Soda' gets superb treatment in the form of Waajeed's Hi-Tech Jazz remix which jumbles the trumpet motifs with shuffling drums and future soul. On the flip, 'Dead End Dance' gets a signature Kaidi Tatham remix that brings the broken beats and sunny sounds to the fore with more languid jazz notes adding sultriness.

Review: After her magnetic debut EP for Running Circle in 2017, Nottingham's Yazmin Lacey lands on our charts with her follow-up 12", a piece of work that sounds deeply accomplished and expansive for being her second EP to date. Largely roaming within the jazzo-sphere, When The Sun Dips 90 Degress is a beautifully seductive five-tracker, with the artist's voice reigning supreme over the cascading showers of piano keys and subtle electronics, somehow tapping into the Alice Coltrane sort of vibe. There's no harp here, but plenty of soulful charisma. Fear not thy devout jazz fanatic - this can get real deep and real smooth. It's a broken beat fan's dream some true. More from Lacey is, indeed, expected in the remainder of the year. Marvellous stuff.

Review: For those with intimate knowledge of the original West London broken beat scene of the late '90s and early 2000s, the return of IG Culture's New Sector Movements project is big news. Remarkably, 'These Times' contains the first new 'NSM' material in 15 years and sees IG Culture joined by a swathe of guest vocalists and musicians including Allysha Joy, Mike City, Natalie May, Wonky Logic and Alex Phountzi. Musically, it's as on-point as you'd expect, with IG Culture and his merry band confidently striding between rolling, horn-sporting future R&B ('These Times'), jazz-funk-flavoured breakbeat soul (the incredible 'Stand'), head-nodding, Latin-tinged 21st century street soul ('Hope'), Kaidi and Dego style business ('H.E.A.T') and hard-wired, sub-heavy, peak-time ready broken beat (the infectious 'Bless').

Review: Victoria Port, one half of the acclaimed electronic soul duo Anushka, steps into the spotlight with her debut solo EP, an accomplished exploration of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyricism delivered via powerful vocals and introspective songwriting. The EP features a diverse range of sounds, from the soulful grooves of 'Cigarette' and 'Haunting' to the more intimate balladry of 'Keep Love For Me' and the title track, 'Did It Again'. Port's lyrics delve into themes of vulnerability, resilience and the transformative power of motherhood, drawing inspiration from the legacy of her Dominican grandmother and the powerful women in her life. A very promising debut.

Review: First Word's first release of the year and Quiet Storm's first substantial release since his album The First Day, "Human Being: The Short Story Of A Reed" is a beautiful conceptual narrative that explores the idea of a reed yearning to be human but discovering it's not quite as easy as it looks. The music is, however, as beautiful as you'd expect from the Parisian composer. Ranging from the soft pensive vocal texture allure of opener "Human" to the eventual dizzying bewilderment of the finale "Being" by way of stimulating chapters such as the lucid bossa "The Reed" and the eerie, night fog horse ride "Risk It", this is a stunning, stirring piece of work that reveals more and more on every listen.

Review: Soulist and Fulgeance's Souleance project delivers a 12" of album proportions. As ever, it's every bit as funky as you'd expect it to be. At points it's a steamy, emotional, come-to-bed affair thanks to the sultry keys and vibrating bass of "Hustle" and the hip-shaking slinky lo-fi samba of "Secoue". At other points it's aimed directly at the dance with the high energy disco boogie rattles of "Tartare" and big filtered house struts of "Ratatouille". At all points it's pristinely produced and coated in a Latin soul that Soulist and Fulgeance have made their own. Complete with remixes from Debruits and Uffe and this beyond album proportions.

Review: French funk of the highest order, Fulgeance and DJ Soulist's Souleance project comes of age with this extensive EP. Vibes range from the powerful floor-focussed, synth-heavy P-funk boogie swagger joint "Broobecker" to slo-mo hypnosis that's so distinctive it sounds like a Todd Edwards track being played at a third of the speed ("Georgian Kiss"). Elsewhere we get jiggy to lo-fi fuzzy Afro funk ("Mais Um") and step back to the 80s for an exploration of b-boyism's deepest aspects. Extensive, exciting and exhilarating, Souleance are making a serious mark right here.

Review: Some 11 years into their career, French outfit Souleance has developed from a duo o a four-piece thanks to the addition of a drummer and synthesiser-loving keyboardist. If Les Mouches, their latest release on long-time home First Word, is anything to go by, it's a move that has made their sound richer, fuller and far more organic. There's much to enjoy across the six-track set, from the mazy, life-affirming synth solos and low-slung, bass-heavy disco grooves of 'Les Mouches', to the live - and ultra-funky - beat science of 'The Bounce' and the hazy-but-exciting jazz business that is 'Mont Maudit'. We'd also recommend checking the quirky, P-funk influenced wonkiness of 'L'Opuleance' and the life-affirming, piano-laden rush of 'Aquarelle'.

Review: After offering up EPs titled "Hard Times" and "Changing Times" in 2017, Kaidi Tatham returns to First Word to complete the trilogy with "Serious Times". Of course, the music contained within the EP's tightly packed grooves is as joyous, rich as intricate as ever. Check, for example, "Don't Cry Now", a samba-soaked, sun-kissed affair that wraps harmonic freestyle vocals, twinkling electric piano lines and darting jazz-funk bass around a seriously shuffling groove. Tatham's much-discussed jazz-funk influences are once again given an airing on "Sugar", while his fine piano work takes pride of place on instrumental hip-hop head-nodder "Zallom". Best of all, though, is opener "Cost of Living", which emphatically weaves together all of these strands and more besides.

Review: The word virtuoso is thrown around like a rag in a laundry these days but Kaidi is definitely deserving of this title. A mind-blowingly talented multi-instrumentalist who was one of the clearest voices and driving forces in broken beat, Kaidi's skills remain just as slick, smooth and crafted with the fine art of surprise as ever as he follows up his "Changing Times" EP on First Word. "Hard Times" eases us in gently with a smooth jazz funk swoon laced with big orchestral sweeps, "I See What You See" ups the tempo with a superb steppy boogie twist that's loaded with some outrageous p-funk bass fills while "Super Lion" flexes around an afrobeat with full eyes (and feet) on the floor. Finally "We All Breathe The Same Air" closes with big dreamy drama that leaves you hanging for more... Just like all good virtuosos should.

Also running a fine in silky soothing solo sounds himself, this 20 minute extended player represents Kaidi at his most relaxed, introspective and subtly euphoric. Ranging from the lounge-licking organ-massaging opener "Treacle Manifestations" to the Innervisions-era Wonder fusion frenzy "Shims", this - like everything he's done - is work of pure art. Essential.

Review: "Let it go" comes fully laden with remixes from Tru-Thoughts/Ubiquity's Nostalgia 77 and First Word records' own broken beat Genius Cedar. Nostalgia 77 has re-recorded the original vocal and produced a melancholic, haunting march reminiscent of Portishead effortlessly combined with his trademark Brit-Jazz sound. Cedar translates the laid back vibe of the original onto an itchy foot twitcher that'll get the floor shuffling. (Think Bugs meets Sa-Ra) "Fundamentally good on all fronts, and utterly captivating" - Echoes.

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.
