Review: Compelling, melodic and dreamatic new techno from Italian duo Boston 168, who transcend the rest with their intelligent and contextually grounded take on the genre. Drawing inspiration from the transformation of industrial settings into rave venues, Sergio Pace and Vincenzo Ferramosca deliver the latest iteration of their arpy analog sound here for leading experimental techno pushers, Arts. Their opener 'Acid Arcane' instantly recalls the feeling of leafing through forbidden codexes and grimoires, in desperate but vain search of the gab-giving essence of Faustian techno knowledge; then there's the cryptic, smoke-blocked weights of 'Codebreakers', which equally conjures a kind of impossible-to-track techno scytale or puzzlebox, in its various moody pad chord movements and piquing acid plucks. The B-side errs more horrific and driving, 'Depth Perception' serving as the worthy culmination of a throng of heaters.

Review: From THEM to REKIDS and now on Arts, Berlin-based Ukrainian producer Chontane has covered a lot of ground in the few years he's been releasing music, arriving at a hi-octane sound that doesn't sacrifice depth and atmosphere in the process. 'Tiama' is a fierce and energised juggernaut bolstered with thick waves of dub tech chords that swirl and surge like a volatile storm cloud about to burst. 'Moellex' creates a similar mood with a different set of tools, using less conventional percussive elements and getting knottier in the groove. There's also bomb-blast garage-techno devastation on 'Apeth' - the kind of heavy-duty gear you could picture Objekt having some fun with.

Review: After 11 years of cultivating a following in Eastern Europe, Greek-born Polish artist Karol Mozgawa (aka DEAS) has dropped another incredible hard-hitting dose of techno to add to his vast catalogue. Containing elements of trance, the melodic thumping and psychedelic feel of Abroad transitions to a mechanical and industrial side B with title track 'System Theory', a major highlight on the 4 track EP, being a dystopian floor-filling anthem that is both referential of its underground roots yet still remarkably refreshing in a world where big room house continues to dominate. Though limited in tracks, System Theory is a journey through the sonic breadth of Eastern Europe's most interesting offerings.

Review: The no-nonsense Arts Collective is back with another of its potent techno 12"s, this time from Deas who got our attention good and proper with his first outing of the year on Bau Muzik back in April. He is in scintillating form again herewith the urgent percussive clatter and bleeping synth madness of 'Format'. 'Burning Space' then has wispy synths peeling off the train track grooves and booming low ends to rattle any warehouse to bits. 'Focus' is a classic mind melter with sonar blips looping ad infinitum over rumbling drum funk and 'Vortex' then ends in in a swirling blizzard of frenzied synth intensity.

Review: Having established the ARTS label ethos of promoting contemporary hi-tech soul last year through releases of original material from Samuel L Session and Jonas Kopp, label boss Emmanuel Ashoka Beddewela changes tack somewhat with this first release of 2014. The Motor City enigma that is Terrence Dixon is the focus as tracks from last year's EP as Population One for Monique Musique are opened up for reinterpretation by I:Cube, Marcel Fengler and Mark Broom. If you indulged in the Giant Robot EP then you'll know it featured a quite distinct revision from Actress, and none of these new refixes quite match that effort from the Werk boss in the satanic stakes. Instead they are of a more floor pleasing nature with I:Cube's A Side hogging take on "Self Portrait" a highlight that's reminiscent of Carl Craig in his 90s pomp.

Review: Once again, Frenk Dublin dabbles in dub and muses on spacetime hardcore continuums with his latest release for the highbrow techno collective Arts, based in Rotterdam. From the off of 'Chord Dancer' and 'The Lost Realm', we feel only lightly electromagnetically convected, with tonic melodics and pleasing phonic physics rattling against and past our ears. It's only at the turn of the B-side that we hear anything remotely less salutary, with 'Time & Space' preferring a mood of deep-space vacuity, and 'Sapphire Dub' advancing, at an ever glacial pace, through ejected fields of chord residua and rimshot-kick impact events. Closer 'Inspected' unsettles rather than resolves any remaining tension, its monotone echo blurts suggesting more to come.

There is a real sense of control to the opener 'Lyra' despite its forward motion and punchy kicks, while 'Vaulting' gets much wilder and looser with its manic synth lead and raw onset of percussive pressure. Switching up things once more, 'Parallel' is a dubby techno tool and 'Shimmer' reverts to the careful tweaking of a deft lead synth over incendiary beats. 'Radiant' and 'Meraki' bring more raved-up and bouncy peak-time techno fun. This is a very useful and varied 12".

Review: With years spent contributing to Monique Musique, Get Digital and 100% Pure behind him, Greek producer Emmanuel surfaces on his own ARTS imprint with two firm and forthright techno workouts that deal in subliminal textures and driving peak time energy. The string riff in "Mentality" will be busy embedding itself in heads all over the shop while the crunchy groove keeps things distinctive and playful without losing that necessary impact. "Scenario" is a more minimal affair with a touch of Robert Hood about it, staying firmly on track with looping melodic phrases and making simple additions of percussion sound huge in the context of the streamlined workout.
