Adam Arthur - "Rogue Intent" (6:30)
Adam Arthur - "Flammenco" (6:15)
Michael Kuntzman - "Shutter" (6:56)
Michael Kuntzman - "Mondane" (6:13)
Review: Larry Heard's infamous Alleviated Music has seen a revival as of late, with the legendary Chicago producer and DJ putting out a lot more music, and a lot more consistently. He's branched out enough to pick up two new, rising talents from the house world in Adam Arthur and Michael Kuntzman, both clearly very able to lay down some heavy gear for the dance floor. Adam Arthur's "Rogue Intent" is a driving, blissful stepper of an acid tune that could be looped on to infinity, and his "Fammenco" tune adds a different, moodier layer to the EP that is nonetheless fresh and instantly alluring. "Shutter" by Kuntzman manages to inject a wave of 80's paceman sounds to a rigid beat of tech-friendly house, while "Mondane" is pure Chicago madness thanks to its harsh, banging kick drums and warehouse sonics. Heavy and recommended, as you'd expect...

Review: Che dropped this x-rated EP back in 1994 with production from the one and only Mr Fingers himself. It came with a warning about the scene expressed in the recording being "a fantasy in the age of promiscuity" and advice to "always wear a condom''. The four cuts are hardcore deep house with classic Heard synths and chords which originally came with four mixes on Trackmode Recordings. They are all included next to a newly unearthed version from the archives of Alleviated and each of them hits a super sweet spot where cosmic pads and dynamic drums meet in harmony under the sleazy vocals.

My Desire (Quad In Blueblackness Change It mix) (9:03)
Change Lanes (edit) (4:32)
Review: Larry Heard's Alleviated label remains a low key bastion of deep house brilliance. The boss often manages to unearth names we have never heard from before, or, in the case of Dovie Cote, someone who has apparently released only once, back in 2011, on Glenn Underground's Strictyl Jaz Unit. This is a typically gorgeous EP of melodic deep house, with late night vibes, cosmic influences and jazz designs defining each track. 'My Desire' is beautifully soft and quiet for those late night and intimate hours, 'Change Lanes' is soul infused with lush vocal harmonising and on the flipside are two versions that take the originals in subtly different directions.

Between Us (feat Madaline - instrumental dub) (6:40)
Reel It In (feat Madaline - Summer Acid Burn) (5:49)
Review: 40 years have now passed since Larry Heard made his first record. Heard is, of course, without peers when it comes to deep house - he pretty much drew up the blueprint after all - though he does occasionally invite other producers to bask in his reflected glow. That's the case here, as he and Memphis-based Michael Kuntzman (an artist who has previously released music on Heard's Alleviated imprint) deliver a notable collaborative 12". Guest performer Maddaline whispers, sings and vocalises her way through the dreamy, richly electronic and sonically pristine 'Between Us', which is accompanied by a typically gorgeous 'Instrumental Dub'. There are two versions of 'Reel It In' - also featuring Maddaline - too: the deep tech-house shuffle of Heard's'Fingers Mix' and the back-to-Chicago-87 flex of Kuntzman's 'Summer Acid Burn' take.

Din Sync (Get Up & Do Your Thing)
Review: ** Repress of the reIssue ** Ooh if there's ever a deep house history lesson wrapped up in a 12" then it's this reissued Stomp The Beat EP from Gherkin Jerks aka the master Larry Heard. The Gherkin Jerks project originally surfaced back in 1988 with this 12" on the Chicago based Gherkin Records label, released anonymously at the request of Heard himself who viewed the Gherkin Jerks material as a creative experiment. Later revealed as the work of Larry Heard, original copies of Stomp The Beat rack up a pretty penny on Discogs so it's good work all round that the producer's Alleviated Records label has teamed up with Clone to release a digitally enhanced version. From the mind bending stereo panning of opening track "Don't Dis The Beat" it's easy to see why the Gherkin Jerks material has been so widely praised - Jamal Moss is a big fan - whilst the general off-key melodics and tough 909 arrangements of what follows still sound futuristic some 15 years on.

Meltdown

Red Planet
Saturn V
Space Dance
Strange Creatures
Review: Shout outs to Larry Heard for finally relenting to the numerous requests to reissue his highly prized Gherkin Jerks material through his own Alleviated label with some digitally enhancement help from the guys at Clone. The 1990 EP was the last of the two EPs that Heard anonymously released under the Gherkin Jerks name back in the late 80s as a creative experiment. Notably less unhinged than Stomp The Beat, the six percussively taut tracks here feel like Heard was reacting to the nascent strains of techno emanating from Detroit. Opener "Meltdown" for example is a rolling slab of pitched-down techno with sharp Motor City-esque synth stabs and nagging, incessant keys, whilst the interplanetary connotations are clear as crystal on tracks such as the beautifully chiming "Red Planet" and the pressurised funk of "Saturn V".

Psychotic Fantasy (7:45)
Reznaytor (6:00)
Ecstasy (Full take) (8:25)
Review: Gherkin Jerks is of course an alias of the legendary house innovator Mr Fingers aka Larry Heard. It is a project reserved for some of his more raw and melting twisting sounds and there sure were plenty of them over the years. This reissue is of some material from 1989 on his own Alleviated label and it comes on limited translucent green wax. Opener 'Psychotic Fantasy' is a twitch opener with drums that bang and acid details, 'Reznaytor' is a percolating analogue workout with wonky keys and weird sound effects and 'Ecstasy' (Full take) is dusty house for late night freaks.

Psychotic Fantasy (7:45)
Reznaytor (6:00)
Ecstasy (Full take) (8:25)
Review: Amongst Larry Heard's many, many celebrated achievements in the field of pioneering house music, the Gherkin Jerks tracks have a certain magnetism thanks to their downright nasty rawness. The original late 80s 12"s have been revisited in the past, but now the bonus tracks originally released on a comprehensive 2013 compilation get their own outing, cut to wax for the first time to serve all those who love their foundational house as rough as it comes. 'Psychotic Fantasy' is a dissonant masterpiece of gnarly acid, while 'Rezynator' has a slightly more melodic demeanour alongside its own grubby brilliance. The 'Original Full Take' of 'Ecstasy' is a slow-burning monster of needlepoint 303 tweaking and bludgeoned beats which jacks out for a full eight minutes.

Love Moon
Just A Test
Idol Mind
Jack Wit Honey
Review: Although Ken Gill will be a new name to most, he's apparently a long-standing friend of Larry Heard. The latter lends a hand - along with Alleviated pal Badie - on the opening track of this debut EP. You can tell, too, as "Love Moon" feels like a classic Heard production - all delay-laden vocals, undulating Chicago bass, sparse beats and cosseting chords. Elsewhere Gill goes solo, delivering stripped-back Chi-town funk (the drum machine dominated "Just a Test"), sinewy dub house ("Idol Mind", which is driven by a thickset, sub-bothering bassline) and lazy deep house-jack (the organ-laden "Jack Wit Honey").

Glancing At The Moon (5:35)
Lamentation (6:48)
Deep Inside (8:26)
Review: Alleviated's Larry Heard reissue series has previously brought us the rough and tough acid of Gherkin Jerks and, more recently, the intergalactic downtempo grooves of his largely overlooked Alien LP. Here, they revisit one of Heard's later aliases, Loosefingers, dusting down and reissuing tracks from 2003's Glancing at the Moon EP. All three tracks are deep, warm and melodious in typical Heard fashion, with the title track delivering a sultry blend of wide-eyed chords, darting electronics, Latin-influenced percussion and tactile keys. "Deep Inside" delivers a hazy, sun-kissed take on soulful house - all jazz bass, sensual chords and gentle vocals. Best of all, though, is the tougher, synth-heavy "Lamentation", which rolls along at a near techno-tempo and is blessed with thrilling bleep melodies.

When Summer Comes
Acid Bounce
Transmission X
Review: Alleviated's trawl through the (admittedly limited) back catalogue of Larry Heard's long-forgotten Loosefingers alter ego continues. The three tracks here were originally released back in 2004 on the When Summer Comes EP, and see Heard at his deepest and most sensual. The ten-minute title track is particularly gorgeous, sounding like a blueprint for all those hazy "beach house" releases that followed in subsequent years. Pleasingly, there's some more aggressive, in-your-face material on the flip, with the rubbery "Transmission X" and bold "Acid Bounce" recalling Heard's more robust, acid house-inclined work (Gherkin Jerks, "Washing Machine" etc). In fact, it's these two cuts that make the EP nigh on essential.

Premonition Of Lost Love (Jordan & Kevin Zanzibar dub) (5:42)
Andromeda One (6:41)
Mystery Of Love (DJ Mel ReGentrfication) (5:44)
Review: While the first EP in Larry Heard's Vault Sessions series focused on previously unreleased music made in 1988, this sequel is not as tightly focused - though the mixture of never-before-heard cuts and rarities is similarly impressive. Check first opener 'The Time Is Now (Old School Mix)', a typically sumptuous and soulful chunk of classic sounding Mr Fingers brilliance, before getting your ears around Jordan Fields and Kevin Elliot's dub of the Heard-produced 1995 Ona King single, 'Premonition of Love'. Made with legendary New Jersey club Zanzibar in mind, it's a warming and tactile US garage treat. Over on the flip, 'Andromeda One' sees heard blur the boundaries between deep house, dub and sci-fi synth sounds, while DJ Mel's remix of all-time-classic 'Mystery of Love' is a percussive, rolling treat.

Another Night (re-edit) (6:36)
Time Machine (6:25)
Review: There's no shortage of gems in Larry Heard's authoritative deep house legacy worthy of a fresh airing, and his Alleviated label embarks on a reissue campaign to bring some perennial classics back in arms reach. Heading to the turn of the millennium, this particular 12" pulls together a couple of tunes from different releases. 'Another Night' originally landed on the 2001 album Love's Arrival, and it sounds utterly timeless as it tenderly bumps out in a configuration of hazy chords and infectious groove, capped off by Shelby Johnson's smouldering vocal. 'Time Machine' came out the same year as a B side to the single release of 'Direct Drive', and it shows Heard's mellow tones set to a tougher beat when you want to bring a little bite to deeper-than-deep scenarios.

Review: Eleven years after he introduced us to his Mr White alias with the acidic bliss of "The Sun Can't Compare", Heard returns with two more extensive, immersive and stylised slices of house. "Virtual Emotion" is a breath-taking progressive odyssey that resonates in that perfect sweet spot between house and techno. "Supernova" takes a much more structured route with full nagging vocals and a sense of proto house theatre running throughout. With promise of a new album (his first in over 12 years), it's an exciting time to be a Larry Heard fan.

Somebody Somewhere

Utopian Dream
Beauty In A Picture
Review: Harry Dennis and Larry Heard began making music together as The IT in the mid-80s, releasing records on D.J International and Black Market until the duo took a break from collaborating in 1990. A staggering 21 years later they resurfaced on proud Chicago DJ and producer Kevin Starke's label, and following that split 12" they now debut on Heard's own Alleviated Records. "Somebody Somewhere" is a classic Chicago house track with pained spoken word lyrics talking about the struggles of life, while "Crying" is deep and kooky in a Perlon kind of way. "Utopian Dream" is piece of street poetry laced with club music that blends electroclash with house, while "Beauty In A Picture" is tribal and bassline driven. Club music doggerels from the street.

Review: Michael Kuntzman presents a uniquely odd but compelling EP for Alleviated Records, following up his split EP 'The Underground Files 1' from 2016. From opener 'Dixie Queen' to its closing 'Dripped Version', we hear four ultra-hazy, muddy wallops in Memphis house, as if to evoke the feeling of attending a local squat rave while pranged off your nut on sizzurp. Vocal elements pop out of the mix like shared, up-close-and-personal conversational slurrings with new acquaintances you've just met, but the tracks all nonetheless command a beautifully driving surrealism, the star example of which has to be 'Mystery For Leo'.

Review: It would be fair to say that Mr Fingers 2016 is something of an event release, at least for those who love deep house. While Larry Heard has kept busy - largely with remixes and reissues - this marks the first 12" release under his most famous moniker for over a decade. He begins in contemplative mood, fusing tumbling music box melodies, creepy electronics and nagging 303 lines on "Outar Acid", before laying down some typically blissful, atmospheric deep house on the wondrous "Qwazars". Flip for "Nodyahead", an effortless mixture of heavy dub-house bottom end, African-influenced percussion and moody late night refrains, and the ultra-deep, piano-laden bliss of "Aether".

Review: First released during the Chicago house boom of 1987, "I'm Strong" remains one of the greatest Fingers Inc collaborations between Larry Heard and Robert Owens. This reissue on Heard's own Alleviated imprint draws together the two most essential versions of the track. On the A-side, you'll find Heard's instrumental version - an intoxicating blend of layered, delay-laden drum machine percussion, looped organ stabs and alien electronics. Owens comes to the fore on the flipside House Remix, laying down one of his most iconic vocal performances - a mixture of soulful singing and atmospheric speech - over one of Heard's most distinctive productions.

There's an educational, empowering purpose to these four tracks, as our hosts guide us through reflections on important Southern social gatherings and overall social observations accompanied by some of Heard's inimitable productions.
