Review: Sahib Shihab (Edmund Gregory) played with many of jazz's finest musicians. Shortly after he became one of the first jazz players to change their names due to an Islamic conversion, he joined Thelonious Monk for his Blue Note sessions. He also played with Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Pettiforn and Quincy Jones. A unique saxophonist of all stripes (baritone, alto and tenor), he was at home in every musical style, from the experimentalism of Thelonious Monk to the more direct hard bop of Art Blakey. Shihab's distinctive sound was rooted in his modernist compositions and arrangements, complemented by an intense, soulful playing style. All this is more than exemplified on this beautiful record, Oktav 1965, on which Shihab is heard in collaboration with the Danish Radio Jazz Group, and performs four measured, slow-unfurling jazz numbers, from 'Di-Da' to 'Mai Ding', all of which carry an underlying spirituality against a foreground of doomy totality.

Review: Upon his death in 1996, many within the jazz community heaped fulsome praise on Shoji Yokouchi. To this day, he remains one of Japan's finest jazz guitarists; a dexterous and inventive guitarist capable of playing immaculate, blues-inspired solos on both electric and acoustic guitars. Proof of his skills is provided by this reissue of Greensleeves, an album he recorded in 1978 alongside his regular "Trio" and organist Yuri Tashiro. Musically, the album offers an attractive blend of jazz-funk, "trad" and fusion tracks laden with impeccable solos from both Yokouchi and Tashiro. The best combination of the two players' styles can be found on "Misty", a fine blend of undulating fairground organ flourishes and evocative Spanish guitar.

Review: Now more than 80 years old and onto its umpteenth reissue after the latest was a 75th anniversary edition in 2015, Wayne Shorter's Adam's Apple remains as classic as ever. This Classic Vinyl Series issue is all-analogue and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes then pressed on 180g vinyl. Next to sax from Wayne himself, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Joe Chambers joined the ranks to help cook up these serious grooving and cool-cat tunes. It was originally released in 1966 and still stands out as one of his greatest ever albums.

Twelve More Bars To Go
Review: Wayne Shorter's Juju, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in August 1964 and released in July 1965, resonating with profound influences from John Coltrane. The album's allure lies not merely in technical strength but in its emotive depth, transcending analytical descriptions. Shorter's tenor saxophone exudes a brooding intensity, marked by sharp tonality and deliberate, weighty phrasing, punctuated by rapid flourishes into higher registers that convey a sense of restrained urgency. His compositions, characterised by hypnotic, repetitive motifs, unfold a richly textured musical adventure. The interplay between Shorter and Tyner on Juju reveals a unique dynamic, distinct from Shorter's collaborations with Herbie Hancock on other Blue Note recordings. The album shows varying ensemble configurations across Shorter's discography, each contributing to its nuanced musical landscape. This Blue Note Classic Series reissue, mastered from the original tapes, preserves the album's timeless appeal.

Review: Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil, recorded during his tenure with Miles Davis and released on Blue Note, stands as a pinnacle of his solo work. While Shorter's tenure with Art Blakey, Miles Davis, and Weather Report alone would secure his place in jazz history, this album underscores his genius as a bandleader and composer. Blending hard bop with avant-garde influences, Speak No Evil features a potent lineup: Shorter on tenor sax, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums. The album strikes a balance between traditional hard bop and more exploratory sounds. Tracks like the intense, fast-paced title piece 'Speak No Evil' showcase the ensemble's dynamic interplay, while 'Dance Cadaverous' offers a moody, atmospheric contrast with its subtle avant-garde touches. Each composition, penned by Shorter, highlights his exceptional skill as a writer and performer. Speak No Evil is impactful for illustrating Shorter's enduring brilliance in jazz.

Review: Wayne Shorter's Odyssey of Iska, originally released in 1970, is back, offering an exciting, exotic, percussion-based proto-world music gem. Building on the experimental sound of Super Nova, Odyssey of Iska features a different lineup, with Shorter playing both tenor and soprano saxophones, plus Dave Friedman on vibes and marimba, Gene Bertoncini on guitar, Ron Carter and Cecil McBee on bass and no less than three drummers: Billy Hart, Alphonse Mouzon, and Frank Cuomo. The album consists of mood-driven pieces, mostly with one-word titles: 'Wind,' 'Storm,' 'Calm,' 'Joy,' and 'De Pois do Amor, o Vazio (After Love, Emptiness).' 'Wind' and 'Calm' exude a serene atmosphere, while 'Storm' introduces a rock-influenced guitar in its intro before transitioning into a richer, more complex sound. Shorter's saxophone weaves through the compositions, complementing the evocative percussive textures created by the ensemble. Throughout, Shorter's thoughtful playing and the cohesive ensemble performance reflect the album's thematic intentions. While Odyssey of Iska remains a significant precursor to Weather Report and a nostalgic piece for jazz enthusiasts. For those exploring Shorter's discography, this album is an intriguing exploration of mood and texture.

Review: Between 1964-1967 the legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter created a treasured and deeply influential body of work, among which 1967's Schizophrenia lay. On this meandering but impassioned jazz dedication to an often misunderstood mental state, Shorter arrived at the pinnacle of post-bop and gazed out at the horizons around him, producing one of his most complete and stylistically diverse artistic statements with a sextet of like-minded musical adventurers. James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Joe Chambers on drums; all came together to play some of Shorter's most enduring themes, including the unforgettable groove of 'Tom Thumb', the evocative 'Go', and the ballad 'Miyako'.

Review: Celebration, Volume 1 is the inaugural release in a series of archival recordings curated by the legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter before his passing in 2023. This exhilarating 2014 live recording captures Shorter's acclaimed quartet, featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade, at the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Sweden. The adventurous set includes favorites such as 'Zero Gravity,' 'Smilin' Through,' 'Orbits,' 'Lotus,' and 'She Moves Through The Fair.' Carolina Shorter, in the album's liner notes, recalls how Wayne immersed himself in unreleased music in late 2022, making detailed notes on each track. His excitement was palpable when he first heard the Stockholm concert, exclaiming, "this is the album!" Initially envisioning the collection as Unidentified Flying Objects due to the innovative notes played, Wayne ultimately decided to name it Celebration to honor life. The album is not just a live recording but a vivid celebration of Shorter's enduring legacy and musical vision.

Review: Nina Simone has never enjoyed the credit she deserves because of quite how confrontational and anti-establishment she often was. Never was that more true than with her performances at Montreux Jazz Festival over the years. Many of them are collected here on this new new double album and many of them are rare and never-before-released recordings. She first played the historic event in 1968 and turned out an emotional show while her famous 1976 showing was much more fiery and unpredictable. Tracks like her fearless 'Four Women' and hauntingly beautiful performance of 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' are all included.

Review: Ballake Sissoko and Derek Gripper's collaborative album is a magical exploration of musical synergy and virtuosity. Recorded in just three hours, the album captures the spontaneous magic that arises when two masters of their craft come together. Sissoko's mastery of the kora, rooted in the traditions of West Africa, melds seamlessly with Gripper's classical guitar expertise, creating a captivating fusion of sound. Their musical dialogue transcends boundaries, with each artist pushing the other to new heights of creativity and expression. Gripper's reverence for Sissoko's skill as an interpreter of timbre is palpable, while Sissoko acknowledges Gripper's curiosity and openness as essential to their collaboration. This album a trip through ancient and contemporary realms, where the resonances of the Manding empire blend with the textures of the guitar to create something truly unique and special.

Review: Jimmy Smith's Root Down, recorded live in 1972, captures the Hammond B-3 legend at his funkiest, with a band fired up by the era's rock and funk influences. This album brims with energy, particularly on the title track, later sampled by the Beastie Boys for their own classic. Now part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, Root Down returns on 180-gram vinyl, remastered from the original analogue tapes, complete with deluxe gatefold packaging. A timeless slice of soulful jazz, made for vinyl lovers and collectors alike.

Review: Legendary Hammond organ player Lonnie Liston Smith had a very special run at New York's Jazz Standard in New York in 2017 as part of a celebratory 75th birthday series. The Breathe album captures the magic of the residency with an expanded line-up of talents including Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar, drums from Johnathan Blake, Jason Marshall and John Ellis on saxophone, plus Sean Jones on trumpet and Robin Eubanks on trombone. He recorded his All In My Mind album in the same week and so was in fine form across all of these spaced out jazz sounds. The album is bookended by tracks featuring the one and only Iggy Pop as well as a cover of Donovan's 1966 hit 'Sunshine Superman'.

Review: .Blue Note's Tone Poet looks back in the legendary jazz label's archives all the way to 1965 for this next reissue, which has been produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analogue master tapes and comes in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. Sonny Clark was one of the most swinging pianists of his era. He hit Blue Note in 1957 with three albums in quick succession in just three months. The six-song set of the sublime Sonny Clarke Trip is one of them and with its bebop themes and standards features bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones.

Review: Originally released in 2008, Manifesto captured Canada's The Souljazz Orchestra in full stride i locked into deep Afrobeat, but stretching further into spiritual jazz, militant funk and raw soul. It's one of their most focused records, recorded live with no overdubs, and it still hits hard. Tracks like 'Parasite' and 'People, People' feel especially relevant now, tackling inequality, media spin and class struggle with sharp lyrics and a driving sense of purpose. There's fire in the horns, urgency in the rhythm, but also a feeling of hope and collective strength. The band has offered plenty of highlights since, but Manifesto remains a standout i lean, direct and full of intent.

Review: British pianist Charlie Stacey's first solo project comes in the form of a one-take direct-to-disc live recording of his improvisational genre-bending sound. The Charlie Stacey regulars are present on drums, bass and trumpet, though this time vocals are courtesy of Vula Malinga of Basement Jaxx fame. The opener 'Dawn Chorus' is a 'Legend of Zelda'-esque gentle key ballad, that blends into the mellow jazz 'Music is Healing' where the brass of Jay Phelps is on full display before giving way to a free for all acid jazz race to the finish on the tail end. A sure favourite for many will be the 10-minute epic 'Rivers of Gondor' - based on the worlds of Tolkien of course - and its twisting, experimental composition.

Review: How far can a single artist take a time-honoured musical trope: the piano solo? Josiah Steinbrick attempts to answer the question not in words, but in ivories, with his newest album For Anyone That Knows You, a bewitching hybrid compositional project that puts the chordophonal instrument centre-stage. Allegedly, the album was recorded not for smoothness or posterity but to emphasise the piano as an object, as well as the person playing it and the moment in which it resounds. On top of that, its ten original compositions - cathartic and ecstatic - are backed up by covers of songs from Peruvian, Creole, and Malian traditions, as well as the much-sought saxophone backings of one Sam Gendel.

Review: International Anthem has become one of the contemporary jazz scenes most crucial labels. It deals in the most cutting edge sounds in the genre as well as offering up fantastic fusions with sounds from the world's hip-hop, R&B and broken beat. Here they look to Charles Stepney for an album that he recorded back in the 1960s in his Chicago basement. He played all the instruments himself and across four sides of vinyl he serves up his so-called and signature "baroque soul" sound with widescreen arrangements, innocent melodies and curious rhythms.

Review: The Acoustic Sounds Series from Verve/Universal Music Enterprises reissues iconic jazz records, offering audiophile-grade versions of these historic works. One standout release is Sonny Stitt's Blows The Blues. Originally recorded in 1959 and released in 1970, this album features Stitt on alto sax, accompanied by pianist Lou Levy, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Mel Lewis. Stitt, often unfairly compared to Charlie Parker, demonstrates his unique voice and exceptional talent on this record, especially on originals like 'Hymnal Blues' and 'Morning After Blues.' This reissue is meticulously mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analogue tapes, ensuring the highest sound quality.c.

Review: Stone Alliance dropped a number of now cult albums that brought fresh invention to the world of jazz-funk back in the 1970s in their prime. Many have become hard to find and out-of-print pieces that cost a pretty penny. Heads Up is a fine example of the trio's signature prowess featuring saxophonist Steve Grossman (who worked with Miles Davis no less, plus bassist Gene Perla and percussionist Don Alias. The album blends sharp improvisation with rich, global influences and standout tracks like 'Tribute to Afreeka' and 'Jimmy & Donnie.'

Review: Brownswood Recordings have become something of a meme, cementing their very distinct jazz sound with every new release. Str4ta's 'Str4tasfear' is the latest LP from the project (which consists of Gilles Peterson and Jean Paul Maunick), painting a vague party-jazz homage to the dawn of the Brit-funk era, but they're not being too succinct about any overarching message beyond that. The songs here are danceable, and that's their main focus. 'Lazy Days' is the drawer-inner - with Emma-Jean Thackray's singing lulling us into a state of preferring not to go to work - while 'Night Flight' opens the bay doors into an instrumental space lounge. All sizzlers.
