After The Rain
Cat: BWOOD 259. Rel: 10 Sep 21
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. After The Rain (Dave Lee alternative II mix) (8:44)
  2. After The Rain (Dave Lee alternative II dub) (8:14)
Review: Str4ta is a project that harks back to the glory days of the vibrant British jazz-funk scene of the early 80s. Gilles Peterson and his partner in crime Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick are behind the music and the new album is the first new music they have put out in over a decade. Quick on the draw as ever is Dave Lee, fka Joey Negro, who on this 12" on Brownswood serves up two alternative mixes of one of the singles. The fist version of 'After The Rain' is all hip swinging claps, low slung funk and brightly shining, starry-eyed melodies. The second dub version is more scripted back but still with plenty of irresistible percussion and bass.

  8. Vision 9 (4:39)
Review: Last year, Gilles Peterson and Incognito main man Jean-Paul Maunick (AKA Bluey) delivered the first single from their Str4ta project, a shameless tribute to the Brit-funk sound of the early 1980s that was popularised by such now iconic acts as Atmosfear and Central Line. Debut album Aspects expands on this template, flitting between up-tempo, jazz-dance friendly floor-fillers (the brilliant, 'Dancing in Outer Space'-inspired title track being one of the best examples), rubbery and soulful future sing-alongs, and the kind of slick, soul-fired, synth-sporting fare that manages to be both deliciously loved-up and pleasingly glassy-eyed. With the experienced Maunick at the controls and providing much of the instrumentation, the album is as musically rich and expansive as you'd expect.

Review: If you copped last year's debut single, you'll be aware that STR4TA is an early '80s Brit-funk-inspired collaboration between Gilles Peterson and Incognito main man Jean-Paul Maunick (AKA Bluey). Aspects, their debut album, further expands on this Atmosfear-inspired template, flitting between up-tempo, jazz-dance friendly floor-fillers (see the inspired title track and Latin-tinged 'Vision 9'), rubbery jazz-funk workouts, soulful future sing-alongs and the kind of slick, synth-sporting fare that manages to be both deliciously loved-up and pleasingly glassy-eyed. With the experienced Maunick providing much of the instrumentation (including some Pat Metheny-esque jazz guitar work), the album is as musically rich and expansive as it is energetic and authentically free-wheeling. In a word: essential.
