Review: A remastering and reissue of the Jack Frost recordings, a collaboration between two acclaimed Australian songwriters: Grand McLennan from The Go-Betweens and Steve Kilbey, the lead singer and bassist in The Church. The Church are well-known for their hit 'Under The Milky Way', which made the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Included in this set is their two studio albums: The Snow Job (1995) has never been on vinyl before and the self-titled debut (1991) has been out of print for more than 20 years. There's also bonus material tucked in. This release comes as The Go-Betweens have been enjoying a renaissance recently, thanks to a successful reissue campaign, and The Church have been touring. Despite this being a side project, there's no sense it's an afterthought as the pair clearly thrived in each other's company and wrote melodic, wistful and affecting songs of the highest order. Noel Gallagher would likely have been proud to write the reverb-y love song 'Thought I Was Over You' and 'Every Hour God Sends' is up there with Echo & The Bunnymen's best stuff. Meanwhile, 'Ramble' has a stark arpeggio-laden beauty to it, building from its sparse beginning into something more textured and darkly atmospheric. There's an embarrassment of riches to delve into here and it cements the pair's reputation for being among Australia's greatest ever songwriters.

Review: Originally released in 1977 (the year of punk's simultaneous birth and more notably, death), (I'm) Stranded has gone on to become, not only one of the most vital pieces of OG Aussie punk, but commonly considered as one of the quintessential early blueprints for an entire generation of artists. Staying on course and not even wading into the creative differences that would soon loom large over each subsequent follow up, this box set arrives as a joint collaboration between L.A. garage rock label In The Red, Universal Music Australia and spearheaded by Feel Presents and The Saints founder Ed Kuepper (later Laughing Clowns), who collectively deliver the original LP remastered for the time in four decades, along with never-before-pressed-to-wax bonus discs of a five-song live performance from Paddington Town Hall in Sydney in 1977, the band's full set from the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival, London November 1977, all three tracks from the 1977 This Perfect Day 12" and all four tracks from 1977's 1-2-3-4 double 7" single, as well as the previously unreleased 1976 demo mix of the (I'm) Stranded LP. Review: This combination of legendarily sultry Mazzy Star chanteuse Sandoval and My Bloody Valentine's Colm o Ciosoig has been silent for seven years, yet this third album marks a welcome return for an outfit who manage with good grace the tricky endeavour of being greater than the sum of their parts. Many might argue that Sandoval could sing the phone book and it would be somehow worth listening to, yet these beguiling songs and dusky arrangements - touching on psychedelic dreamstates, folksy earthiness and Velvets-style swagger with the assistance of none other than Kurt Vile on the Nancy & Lee style 'Let Me Get There' - have a radiant mystique and irresistible allure all of their own.

Review: Offering up more debuts and dreams is Domino once again with the release of a first album by Los Angeles singer-songwriter SASAMI. The LP, said to be inspired in large by Bruce Vs Chocolate Cake from the 1996 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda, sees SASAMI turn in a variety of solo, synthy and sultry numbers, running a gauntlet between subtle punk, electronic pop, and funky, danceable New York indie. "Morning Comes" is perhaps the best example of the latter, sharing a sweet cadence with Stereolab and Nurse With Wound's classic "Simple Headphone Mind". Killer reference. With the amount of uber cool solo vocalists out there, SASAMI's unpretentious debut adds a fresh minty breath to the mix.
