Review: Popularly known to fans as "Ice" - a rare case of hypocorism in colloquial fan band nicknaming - Strut Recordings document a rare record from the vaults of the luminary Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, one that is arguably the closest in their catalogue to the signature sound defining their earlier work. Marked by an especially complex funk rhythmology, this record was pressed contemporaneously with the infamous Soul Makossa and Malik sessions; but compared to their earlier works, Afro Agban pushes deeper into jazz-rock territory. 'Ozan Koukle' has espceially become a known but coveted missing link for turntable taxonomists, who'll thank their lucky stars for the fact that it is now available in full.

Review: Long Island's finest, the Lafayette Afro Rock Band, formed firstly as the Bobby Boyd Congress and then renamed themselves Ice; only after a string of travails and a return to the US after a long stint in France did they rename themselves the Lafayettes. Soul Makossa came a long while after this renaming; their second album is packed with the same Boyd-centric hallmarks, from bulbous Rhodeses, cowbells and wahs through to riffing funk fantastics, culminating in the peak sonic movements that are 'Hihache' and 'Nicky'.

Inspired by Motown's work ethic, Jaubert initiated daily rehearsals, leading to the band's unique sound. Immersed in Paris's African-dominated Barbesse district and frequently performing with Cameroonian composer Manu Dibango, the group evolved into Lafayette Afro Rock Band, embracing a heavier, more intricate Afro-funk style. Their debut album, Soul Makossa, featured a dynamic rendition of Dibango's classic, alongside the intense break of 'Hihache' and the infectious 'Nicky.' This meticulously crafted remaster by The Carvery from the original tapes includes the full original artwork, celebrating an iconic album's legacy.

In 1971, the seven-member Afro-American ensemble, initially known as the Bobby Boyd Congress, moved from the U.S. to France. Bandleader Frank Abel recalls, With lead singer Bobby Boyd's return to the US, the group rebranded as Ice and collaborated with independent producer Pierre Jaubert, who had worked with legends like Charles Mingus and Archie Shepp. Inspired by Motown's work ethic, Jaubert initiated regular rehearsals with Ice. The band, immersed in Paris's African-dominated Barbes district, began infusing African elements into their music, often performing with Cameroonian composer Manu Dibango. As the Lafayette Afro Rock Band, they shifted to predominantly instrumental compositions with a dense Afro-funk sound. Their debut as Lafayette included 'Soul Makossa' and the impactful break in 'Hihache.' A year later, 'Malik' refined their sound with tracks like the percussive 'Conga,' atmospheric 'Djungi,' and robust 'Darkest Light.' Review: The Lafayette Afro Rock Band's superb Malik is a vibrant fusion of funk, soul and Afrobeat rhythms that was initially released in 1974 and now, alongside some of their other works, is getting reissued. The iconic track album showcases the band's infectious energy and dynamic instrumentation. It is packed with driving basslines, intricate percussion and hypnotic grooves that captivate from start to finish and transport you to the heart of a steamy dance floor. The band's mastery of blending African and Western musical elements shines through to make for an enduring musical document that is still widely celebrated for its infectious rhythms and influence on the funk and Afrobeat genres.

Review: The third edition of Horse Meat Disco's cowbell revue arrives on Strut at a time when the genre is in the midst of a golden period and thus it's no surprise to see the concept behind this collection mirrors that. Whilst the two previous editions have focused on the underground NYC disco sound of the late 70s/early 80s, this third selection bridges the gap between then and now with the first twelve inch strictly contemporary productions chosen by Jim Stanton and Severino. It's a smart selection too ranging from the gritty arpeggiated funk of Leftside Wobble's revision of L.I.F.E.'s proto house cover of Marvin Gaye to Yam Who's bottom heavy diva anthem "I'm In Love" and Tom Trago in glistening disco pump mode. James Hillard and Luke Howard take the controls for the more vintage sounds, with the camp flex of Rose Lauren's "American Love" and the MOR Philly disco of Idris Muhammed particular delights. Presented in a gatefold sleeve that's lined by some insightful notes from the excellent Daniel Wang, it makes for another killer release from the Strut stable.
