Let It Go
Cat: SSCR 009. Rel: 30 Dec 24
Let It Go (vocal) (4:12)
Let It Go (dub) (4:11)
Review: At the start of the COVID-19 shutdown, Rob Hart and David A. Tobin were writing music for an artist's project. When the artist left, they found themselves reflecting not on lost work but on their shared love for music. Their conversation turned to the 90s-a time when hip-hop fused with funk and soul, promoting fun, parties and unity. Inspired by this, Rob created a sound palette echoing the hits of the early 80s and 90s, while David envisioned a local club vibe. In one day, they crafted this song with infectious hooks, nostalgic beats and joyful energy. Rob's production polished the track into a "hands-in-the-air" anthem-a tribute to good times and a beacon of positivity in dark times.

Let It Go
Cat: DYNAM 7072. Rel: 24 Jul 20
Let It Go (part 1) (2:56)
Let It Go (part 2) (2:03)
Review: Funk, soul and jazz-funk reissue specialists Dynamite Cuts are particularly good at offering up seven-inch singles featuring album tracks that have never previously appeared on "45". They're at it again here, delivering a killer seven-inch featuring the much-sampled two-part track that bookends K.C & The Sunshine Band's self-titled, 1975 sophomore LP. "Let It Go (Part 1)" is a low-down Miami funk treat featuring a hot-to-trot-mix of bustling drums, heavy percussion breaks, rousing vocals, fiery (and familiar) horn riffs and impassioned lead vocals. The slightly shorter "part two" mix is an even heavier, vocal-free take that deftly showcases the quality of the band's hip-shaking, rabble-rousing instrumentation.

Let It Go
Cat: BBR 017. Rel: 20 Nov 20
Let It Go (vocal) (3:30)
Let It Go (instrumental) (3:30)
Review: A Lord Funk and Samm Culley collaboration is always going to be something to get excited about and so it proves on this one from French label Boogie Butt. Each of these artists has oodles of experience spanning multiple decades, with Culley being an R&B, soul and funk keyboard player who has been in various key bands. Here he harks back to the 70s with super tight drum funk and rugged instrumentals recalling the likes of The Fatback Band and Hot Chocolate. The breaks are killer for the dancers, too, and on the flip, Lord Funk serves up his rework while Samm jumps on bass to do his inimitable thing.
