Review: Expanding on the ever-present fervour for classic industrial music, CTI's Elemental 7 lands in our laps, a reissue of the soundtrack to their 1982 film of the same name. Devastating and brutal sound effects are paired with haunting vocal performances on this two-suite clanker for the ages, while the accompanying video features cut-up video clips and dancing ghosts, while nods in the titles refer to seances and exorcisms. Don't pass on this one, as it's not just any old soundtrack; underwater worlds and vaporeal explosions make up its more unusual sonics.

Review: One of the major television events of the year so far has surely been The Last Of Us, the zombie apocalypse survivor show adapted from a video game to gut-wrenching, butt-clenching, nerve-shredding, tear-jerking effect. As well as the outstanding acting from the lead roles and the incredibly realised nightmare landscapes, credit must surely also go to Gustavo Santaolalla for his dramatic score, which is now being released by Music On Vinyl as a limited edition green and silver audiophile edition which comes with an eight-page booklet. For fans of the series who want to relive the terror, or simply those who love a great score, this is a must-grab.

Review: It almost (almost) feels pointless to pitch why you should buy Moonage Daydream. After all, David Bowie was one of the 20th Century's best selling and most influential artists. And that legacy continued through the early-21st, when he represented an increasingly rare breed of visionary artist capable of building entire worlds. He straddled mainstream popularity and experimentalism with ease. So, you're probably going to pick up a copy of this on sight and spec alone.
Nevertheless, some context may help. 'Moonage Daydream' is, of course, the title of one of Bowie's most enigmatic and defining tracks, which would go on to form the basis for the concept album The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. Now it's also the name of a new documentary about the life and times, and incredible work, of the man in question. In terms of soundtrack, that translates as two discs of rare and iconic material, from 'The Jean Genie/Love Me Do/The Jean Genie' medley (recorded at the final date of the Ziggy tour in 1973), to alternative mixes of tracks like 'Modern Love'.

Review: James Horner's Titanic soundtrack has become a classic in its own right, but it's certainly been a good while since it saw any proper release. Thankfully, it's now the 25th Anniversary of the astonishingly sad film, and as ever, this new reissue sees us reminded of Horner's impressive ability to wrench out just about every tear that could possibly be wrought from our ducts (and they're deep!). Classic string movements and a near-universally recognisable lead motif capture the grandeur and tragedy of the ship's story. Plus, longtime fans will be delighted at the news of an included eight-page booklet on the film and score, a well as a poster.

Review: Not your everyday crime thriller, Man On A Swing (1976) doesn't just follow a detective solving a murder with his very own machismic wits. It rather sees the main character consult a local mystic for help, in what can only be described as a far more holistic and spiritually in-touch mystery than most out there. Lalo Schifrin's OST is as entertaining and stark as this premise suggests, blending every influence from disco to funk to bossa nova into a rather exciting affair.

Review: Legendary composer Ennio Morricone wrote this one alongside Bruno Nicolai, a firmed and someone who he worked with on several occasions. It is one of the albums in his discography that rather gets overlooked, which is not hard to understand given its breadth and depth, but that's not to say it's right. Experimental elements intertwine with his skillful knack for composition as hair-raising violin notes sit next to ominous percussion. Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza and the angelic vocals of Edda Dell'Orso add yet more to this hidden gem.

Review: Where do you start with this one? Stanley Kubrick's landmark science fiction movie might be best remembered for its soundtrack. Or at least the opening overture, 'Also Spruce Zarathustra', and its bombastic drums and brass that seem to scream "we're going to space and into the unknown". However, as the original score proves upon reappraisal, there's much here that you likely won't remember until you hear it again.
Not least the terrifying, shrill chorus of 'Requiem for Soprano', which almost sounds like humanity crying out for help across the great endless nothing we call the universe. Elsewhere, we have the strange, alien refrains of 'Lux Antena', which invokes similarly fitting mental imagery - spareness, desolation, a singular beacon of noise in the darkness. Or the nervous tension of 'Atmospheres'. A testament to the power of music to make you visualise.

Review: A popular and controversial new TV series, This England, documents the recent history of England's most contemptible prime minister, Boris Johnson, and his Conservative government's reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notwithstanding the surreality of so quickly dramatizing a very real and bad collective experience (there are theories out there that say turning real traumatic world events into TV spectacles has the useful effect of placating a public that would otherwise grow revolutionarily angry), we still commend the OST by David Holmes here, which matches the urgency and quick-action of the pandemic as it spread across the country. Holmes' orchestral score aims for three disparate themes ('creeping', 'urgency', and 'careful'), which cause the music to rise in tactful intensity, contrasting to not-so-tactful 'traffic light' system to which the public was subject - but which the government somehow weren't.

Review: Space disco might be a recognisable or at least widely acceptable genre term, but its long lost twin 'space jazz' is on the sidelines, relegated to nicher corners of musical history. Thankfully, its memory has been conserved thanks to the late great composer Ennio Morricone occupying one of those corners. 'Space: 1999' was British TV's answer to Kubrick - concerning a fictional account of what would happen if the moon were knocked out of orbit - and Morricone's soundtrack for the Italian theatrical version here forms a veritable part the Italian OST canon. Incredible cacophonous clang-jazz, modular workouts and tom-heavy unidentified flying drums make up this fast but lonesome paean for the cosmos.

Review: The latest in our film soundtracks pot comes from the wondrous Matthew Herbert, the house music producer and musician who's turned his creative focus to making film scores in recent years. 'The Wonder' complements the latest film by Sebastian Leilo of the same name - a recent addition to the mainsteam Irish film canon, it's about a miraculous young girl who has managed to survive without food for 11 months. To bolster the context of the Great Famine, Herbert's music is spectral, pure and sensitive, pushing the outer limits of what a 'cinematic' ambient soundtrack can be conceived to be.

Review: Clint Mansell wouldn't be every director's first choice to soundtrack Black Swan, a deeply disturbing psychological minefield set around a performance of Swan Lake. Making a name for himself with the alt-rock doyens Pop Will Eat Itself, the relationship he later struck up with celebrated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has given us some wild scores - Requiem For A Dream and Pi being two of the most challenging and traumatising, neither of which are very Tchaikovsky.
Nevertheless, as the OST to Aronofsky's Black Swan goes to show, Mansell is more than up to the task. Yes, it's dark, but it's also faithful to the background material: an incredible collection of classical, largely piano-led tracks that are as evocative as they are emotionally-charged, tense as they are serene, and musically highly accomplished.

Review: Grossing over $1.4bn globally, Top Gun: Maverick may not have been the film everyone wanted last year, but it was the film everyone needed. Not least in the cinema. The long-long-awaited follow up to 1986's iconic (for good and bad reasons) tale of naval aviators (not pilots) singlehandedly saved the big screen summer in 2022, and that speaks volumes about where we are right now.

Film is a window on society, and in the aftermath of a pandemic during which we stepped over the line into the future unawares, it seems people really want an old school blockbuster void of cynicism. That's what they got here, and although it has both contemporary pop that won't stand the test of time, and bits from the original motion picture's soundtrack repeated, the score to the 21st Century reboot is perfectly in-keeping. Zimmer ramps up the emotional resonance with tunes like 'Penny Returns', Kenny Loggins does Kenny Loggins, and that theme tune rounds it off.

Review: Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning sensation Bluey is one of those shows you are only made aware of if you have kids. And then it pretty much takes over your life for a while as kids love it. Dance Mode is the follow up to the number one album Bluey already put out and it is another collection of 17 brand new recordings from series two and three of the hit animation, originally composed by Joff Bush. The heartfelt, funny portrait of family life is always brought alive by the colour sounds and has plenty of upbeat EDM tracks that bring the good times to any family disco.

Review: The original soundtrack for King Creole is one of the best the Memphis magician Elvis Presley ever worked on. It was his fourth Hollywood movie and the story is based loosely on Harold Robbins' novel A Stone For Danny Fisher which tells the tale of a struggling Boxer. In the movie, that boxer becomes a singer played by Presley who also plays all the music, of course. It features r&b, Dixieland rock, jailhouse rock and plenty more gems which is why Presley himself said it was one of his favourites. It was also his last real dramatic role on screen.

Review: David Shire has one hell of a back catalogue. Active within music since the 1960s, and specifically theatre and film soundtracks in the 1970s, while many of the biggest names behind movie scores have a tendency to explore the same avenues, and therefore wind up creating tunes for relatively similar flicks, in this case that's not really true. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (the original, of course), All The President's Men, and parts of Saturday Night Fever give some idea as to the breadth of his mastery.
The Conversation slips right in there in terms of period and genre, but is, of course, a very different classic to a movie about a New York subway train getting hijacked or social tensions in Brooklyn at the height of the disco era. While largely focused on piano solos, we also get late night dance floor jazz, tense drone, and moody avant-garde, just in case the on-screen action wasn't brooding enough already.

Review: The score for the HBO series 'The White Lotus' is an exceptional work of sound by Cristobal Tapia de Veer - an Argentinean-born, UK-based composer who has stood out in the world of television and cinema music for many years now, with past credits including Black Mirror and Utopia. Tapia de Veer here creates a dark and emotional atmosphere, using far-flung instruments from the charanga to the piano to even tuned vocals from animals, with the aim of reflecting the show's diverse, class-conscious character satire. An album of ironic exotics, it's a telecommunicated rewilding for the ears. There are multiple variants of this release, handled with reliable care by the excellent team behind WRWTFWW Records, ensuring the quality of the product when it lands in your hands.

Review: Australian folk-indie-pop set Angus & Julia Stone, appropriately led by brother and sister Angus and Julia Stone, have been making waves Down Under for almost 20 years now. One listen to their output is enough to convince you they're a cut well above the rest, and the panel charged with deciding on the ARIA Awards obviously agree. They've now won lots, and received nominations for countless more.
Life Is Strange certainly reflects their oeuvre quite accurately. Somewhere between contemporary country, blissful indie and romantic, soft and sweet artsy indie, the project itself also reflects their forward-thinking attitude, with this one of a growing number of video game scores that are actually albums in themselves, rather than the kind of straight up soundtracks we're mostly used to.

Review: Phil Collins seems to be one of those marmite artists who people either really love or really hate with nothing in between. We're lovers, to be honest. He might now be retire from touring for ever but his music will live on across the generations not least thanks to albums like this one in his arena. His soundtrack for Disney movie Tarzan truly knocked it out of the park - he wrote and recorded it all with wedding song level ballad 'You'll Be In My Heart' one of the standouts in a record full of big moments.

Review: The White Lotus has become something of an unexpected but huge hit. The murder mystery series has a seductive aesthetic, with beautiful people in beautiful locations and standout performances from various lead actors. The second series was as well received as the first and already a third is underway and accompanying every episode has been a great mix of music. It now finds its way onto limited edition heavyweight vinyl with all the original pieces featuring and making for the same curious and alluring atmospheres that have helped led the show its style.

Review: Is there much left to say about Francis Ford Coppola's epic gangster trilogy, The Godfather? We've analysed the symbolism, critiqued the performances, and pondered on how the third part was such a let down so many times, with film history tutors across the world driven to madness, or at least distraction, by the endless stream of first year essays about the use of orange as a colour to foreshadow death and tragedy.
Even the rightly acclaimed soundtrack has been discussed and assessed a hundred times over. Nevertheless, some things are still worth pointing out. One of several instances in which the late, great composer Carmine Coppola scored his son's movies, it's grand, refined, and at times almost has the qualities of the musical accompaniment to a great ballet. Suffice to say, it's more than fitting for the cinematic odyssey in question

Review: The self-flagellating moroseness of the popular cinematic character Edward Scissorhands is reflected well in the film's soundtrack by Danny Elfman, here repressed in full to celebrate the album's 30th Anniversary. Nailing the moving aspect of Scissorhands' barbed plight, the gothic fantasy mood is conveyed largely through twinkling bell movements, sweeping strings and washed-out soprano choirs, making this one of the most chilling yet emotive soundtracks of the century.

Review: If you've not seen Des Morts then buckle up and prepare for something you'll never, ever forget. The critically acclaimed documentary is one of very few films to directly deal with the unspeakable of life - death. During the course of the running time, you encounter doctors desperately trying to save a stab victim, a body melting in the heat of a crematorium chamber, the execution of a Philippine guerrilla, people who are about to be no more, and those they will leave behind.
Fear of all this is a largely Western condition, but humans have a universal obsession with death that stays with us until all questions are eventually answered when we finally die. Composer Alain Pierre does his best to convey this mystery, awe, and unknowing via a soundtrack that runs between outtakes from the film, synthesiser overtures, field recordings, religious chants and more.

Review: Allegedly, 'Mirrors In The Object' is an unreleased film, but the persisting lore around it and this new soundtrack EP by Unit Nine insists that it exists. Whatever the case, the music contained on these two cuts by one of The Hague's most promising new bands suggests something about the film's content. Both tracks are laid-back sun-kissers for lounging, suggesting a resplendent romantic drama wih a dash of surrealism. Instrumental, cinematic funk pieces like this are a curveball choice for PIP, the label run by Netherlands dance music's high priest, Legowelt - but it's also a great one.

Review: Jan Jelinek is never one to present music without an idea behind it. On SEASCAPE - polyptych, he collaborated with Canadian visual artist Clive Holden to create an audio-visual software which, on the surface, feels like the disorientation of being immersed in or moved about by a sizeable body of water. It's subtle and shimmering, threaded with the cosy hum and micro sonic style which Jelinek has made his own, but it of course develops a new resonance when you learn all the sound has been triggered by converting ranting speeches from Captain Ahab in John Huston's 1956 adaptation of Moby Dick. Just very occasionally actual speech noises sneak through, but primarily this is a fragmented, subliminal experience which will satisfy the expectations of Jelinek's fanbase - and indeed anyone who appreciates elegant, minimalist experimentation.

Review: The 1992 film Singles is famous for its pairing of soundtrack and theme. It's a film about the lives and loves of a bunch of Seattle grunge geeks as they encircle the local music scene.
