Review: Reykjavik-based Ben Frost hasn't released any solo material since 2009's By The Throat and we weren't surprised when the infamous Mute imprint announced that they'd be releasing his next full-length work. Both the label and the artist share a deeply experimental stance, and one which is just impossible to pin down. Very much in this vein, Aurora is a tense and chilling collage of diverse sounds and sinister quasi-melodies, starting from the opener "Flex", which sets the scene for what quickly unravels into an all-out cyclone of sonics. This is certainly an LP which should be digested from start to finish, but there are arguably some stand-out moments throughout. The jittering bric-a-brac of percussion that is "Secant" cannot be overlooked, and neither can the brooding kick-shots of "Venter". The ethnic noise infusions of "Sola Fide" and "A Single Point Of Blinding Light" are also particularly rich in experimental gorgeousness.

Review: Electronic experimentalist Ben Frost is renowned for making music that flits between challenging, post-punk influenced mutilated noise, and deeply atmospheric, picturesque electronica. This contrasting approach once more provides an anchor for his fifth studio album, The Centre Cannot Hold. It was recorded over ten days in Chicago and, according to interviews undertaken by Frost to promote the set, was both "an exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation" and "an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarine in sound". In other words, it hurtles from dark, droning intensity to delicate and soothing, melody rich ambience.

Review: A new soundtrack album which features 13 original compositions by the experimental composer Ben Frost, whose other cinema related efforts include music for the film Sleeping Beauty and the 2015 British television series Fortitude. For this release, he creates 'vivid minimalist textures' to accompany the visuals in the new film Super Dark Times. When director Kevin Phillips approached the Aussie artist to write music for the film, it is said to have resonated immediately with him. As a composer, the thing that excited him most about the movie was that within the idea of this period drama was a largely untapped world of to explore. Whilst the sound of the '80s has become a form of borrowed nostalgia for millennials, Frost admits that '1995 still feels uncomfortably close.' He provides examples such as CD Walkmans, digital delays, Intel Pentium chips, and Peavey practice amps as equipment that inadvertently defined the music of the period: his teenage years.
