Review: Henrik Schwarz first remixed 'Juar', a track by South Sudanese musician and political activist Emmanuel Jal, way back in 2010. A decade later, Innervisions issued a new 12" featuring two more versions from the long-serving German producer. It has become an in-demand item of late, hence this timely reissue. The main remix (side A) is a fine slab of driving, slowly unfurling Afro-tech-house brilliance, with Schwarz placing the original version's male and female vocals atop a moody bassline, shuffling drums, rising and falling electronic motifs and tactile Rhodes electric piano stabs. On the 'Don't Let Your Vote Be Fake Newsed' mix, Schwarz strips out much of the vocals and adds further waves of electronics, delivering an instrumental dub that's even more impactful than the vocal version.
Review: Over the last three years, DJ/producer Mimmo "MoBlack" Falcone has turned MoBlack Records into arguably the World's leading label for African house music. Defected clearly thinks so, because the label has decided to put out this EP featuring tracks from remixes from Falcone and some of his regular collaborators. On side A Falcone joins forces with Armonica to deliver two sparkling, rubbery, positive and heavily electronic reworks of Fela Kuti classic 'International Thief Thief'. Both hit the spot, though it's the Dub, with its extended vocal breakdown and trippy effects, that floats our boat. Over on the flip we're treated to two versions of MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal and Henrick Schwarz hook-up 'Chagu': a bouncy Afro-tech take from Schwarz and a warmer, deep Afro-house interpretation by Falcone.

Review: Bugge Weseltoft and Henrik Schwarz first crossed paths on 2011's Duo, a sophisticated blend of Schwarz's cosmic disco tendencies and Wesseltoft's exquisite jazz piano. It was understated, but brimming with inspiration, and it's widely hailed as something of a modern classic. As such, it's a treat to see the pair reunited for Duo II, once more on Jazzland, but if you were expecting a repeat of the first album, think again. With guest vocalists and musicians stirred into the stew, Schwarz and Wesseltoft explore all kinds of new terrain without losing that immediacy and delicacy that made their first joint effort so charming.
