Circle Of Dust
Review: Formed in 2020, Tommy Paslaski, Ben Paulson and Akeem Asani have evolved their sound as Purelink from dub techno and '90s drum 'n bass to vaporous jazz and post-rock elements. Their second album embraces fluidity by mixing live instrumentation and vocals with their signature ambient and rhythmic experimentation. It also reflects a period of upheaval as they moved from Chicago to New York City and went on to incorporate acoustic and electric elements alongside contributions from Loraine James and poet Angelina Nonaj. Tracks like 'First Iota' and 'Kite Scene' explore evolving, atmospheric soundscapes and the album culminates in the rather more euphoric 'Circle of Dust'.

Review: Elizabeth Madox Roberts' The Time Of Man (1926) is an episodic modern novel, tracing the life of Ellen Chesser, the daughter of poor white tenant farmers in rural Kentucky. Roberts treats the main character's movement through different landscapes and seasons waveringly, grappling with poverty, loss, love, and the push-pull between solitude and connection by way of a lytic narrative that shifts and resolves atemporally. Biosphere's new record carries the transmission chain further, naming itself after the novel while interspersing its hiss-topped drum machine actions with vocal snippets from Joan Lorring's radio play version. Slowly transcendent, Biosphere presides with arid royalty over a slow but satiating new six-track release.

Review: Few have the depth and breadth of knowledge about music that Anglesey-based punk historian and author Jon Savage has, so to delve into the themed compilation he has put together is an education. Sticking to the idea of doing a musical voyage through the theme and idea of Space, Savage has clearly hit the brief. The Byrds 'C.T.A' sounds like an alien encounter; Devo's 'Space Junk' is quite timely in a lyrical sense, since experts are saying space is becoming a new frontier for war and there's satellite jams. There are some classics that you'd expect here - like Sun Ra - and it's great seeing leftfield icons Wooden Shjips included with their mesmerising cut 'Space Clothes' as theirs is contemporary psychedelia at its finest.

Review: Organic Analogue returns with a rediscovery of Beppu's rare dubbed-out electronica and circuit-bent techno. Andrew Hargreaves is the Manchester-based producer behind this alias which was first making waves back in the late-2000s. Back then it was three limited CDr EPs in 2009, which came with just 50 copies each, that made a stir and still stand up today. As such, the sought-after recordings receive a proper vinyl pressing and have been mastered by Miles Whittaker. Two distinct remixes from Demdike Stare also add further quality and contemporary context to the origins, which blend dub techno and braindance with textured noise. IPOP continues Organic Analogue's tradition of spotlighting overlooked talent having already done so with names like DJ Guy and Jean-Louis Huhta.

Review: Geir Jenssen (Biosphere) marks his AD93 debut with The Way Of Time, wrapping elucted echo and looping synth drift around spoken fragments of Elizabeth Madox Roberts' great 1926 novel The Time Of Man. A Midwestern gothic literary staple, Roberts' novel is about the daughter of a Kentucky tenant farmer, and Jenssen's haunting use of Joan Lorring's voice from the 1951 radio play adaptation readapts his usual icy predilections for suitably huger desert horizons. Rather than treating the vocal as ornament, he folds it deep into the mix, letting it dissolve into the melodic architecture.

In conjunction with another PURL crowdfunding campaign, we're now firmly re-poised to take in this wash of ambient rerubs again, relishing them like monsoons on baked skin. From Moshimoss' strange dub inflections to Ecovillage's 'Land Of Dreams' revisit, every track here on this CD edition is a depth-swill of ambiance.

Review: Different Rooms finds its footing in the blurs between studio process and improvisation; lived space and constructed sound. Made across late 2024 and early 2025, it hears LA-London-Hamburgers Jeremiah Chu and Marta Sofia Honer fold field recordings, granular textures, and multi-layered viola sessions into a viscous yet meticulous shape. Core material stemmed from real-time editing and in-studio performances, interwoven with improvisations recorded back in 2023 alongside Jeff Parker and Josh Johnson. Compared to the outward gaze of their debut, Recordings From The Aland Islands, this second one turns inward, coming rooted in urban soundscapes: train stations, streets, domestic interiors.

Review: There is a delightful lightness of touch to these deep dubwise explorations on the newly emerging False Aralia label, set up by Brian Foote, who founded US leftfield institution Peak Oil. Drums lap like gentle waves, synths unfurl as softly as passing clouds and smudged, ghostly vocals from Loveshadow's Anya Prisk bring romance. 'Externalism 02' is brilliantly wistful - barely there pads hint at emotional pain but dissipate before you hurt too much. 'Externalism 03' is a more lo-fi and minimal work with shuffling drums and murky low ends coalescing into a tender and bubbling soundscape then 'Externalism 04' is a sonic collage that is always shifting its focus from flickering candles to blurry pads. Hugely experimental but warmly comforting sounds.

We don't know who or what Iri Gram is but we do know having listened to this that they make intricately designed dub, minimal, ambient and sound art fusions that sound like nothing else but also conjur up familiar feelings and nostalgia for forgotten memories. All four are couched in dub with wispy melodies and frayed edges, smudged surfaces and poly rhythms that range from slow and bubbly to more urgent and fractured. They all endlessly mutate and leave you lost in a whole new sound world but wanting more.

Review: Before their name became shorthand for widescreen ambient melancholia, Stars of the Lid were two Texan misfits tracking guitar drones and tape murk on a four-track. Originally released in 1995, this debut captures Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride in embryonic form - lo-fi and unpolished, but already drawn toward the slow dissolve that would define their later work. Tracks like 'Before Top Dead Center' and 'Madison' stretch out into flickering shadow, barely-there melodies adrift in delay and hiss. 'Lid (Live)' and 'Tape Hiss Makes Me Happy' speak to the duo's early collage mindset, rooted more in radio static and experimental tape culture than orchestral ambient. There's no grand arc here, just porous, slow-burning atmospheres that melt into one another - almost ambient in spite of itself. While less refined than later landmarks, it holds its own as a formative document, revealing how Stars of the Lid's minimalism always hinged on texture first, structure second. From Austin's rock heartland came something untethered - a stillness that would eventually ripple far beyond.

Review: Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel III concludes a five-year journey by unrelenting ambient don zake and 36 as they once again cook up ambient soundscapes with real emotional depth. Inspired by a fan who said, "I was terrified of space travel, until I heard this album," the series explores the tension between isolation and wonder and this third volume shifts from drifting to arrival, where melancholic piano and deep synths mirror descent, landing and the quiet awe of beginning anew. With tracks like 'Final Approach' and 'Blue New World,' the duo crafts cinematic, immersive music for inner and outer voyages that are full of warmth, weight and the haunting beauty of the cosmic unknown.

Review: Cape Town ambient producer Jason van Wyk pares his sound down to its barest, most expressive elements, doing sound justice to the name Inherent (though he's always interested in ideas of transparency and simplicity, with the similarly themed Opacity dropping on Home Normal in 2017). He now leans into stillness in motion, folding ghost-traced piano lines and gauzy drones into long, slow exhalations, where just when things threaten to dissolve entirely, he rejigs the frame. Brittle guitars now creak in, synth arps flicker like faulty neon, rhythms emerge with princely precision. It's not a departure so much as a consolidation, as van Wyk revisits old tools with rewed restraint, preferring unembellished ambiences. Like the innate returns of close reading, we're invited to closely listen here, since glints of detail glister just below the surface.

The vision unfolds across eight tracks, from the opener 'Elysium' and its almost hymn-like grandeur and the airy swathes of synth on 'Horizon', right through to the super sustained notes of 'Utopia' at its end. A meditational listen for sure, but one with plenty of mood peaks and troughs along the way.

Review: Past Inside The Present is back with another of its quietly powerful ambient records, this time from Almost An Island, which is a collaboration between Kenneth James Gibson and husband and wife duo James and Cynthia Bernard. This black version of the self-titled oeuvre drifts through ambient, Americana and experimental soundscapes with musical elegance and tasteful restraint. Muted textures, swirling guitar, pedal steel and subtle vocals create a mood that draws you in close but is also grand in scale. Tracks like 'Quadrivium' and 'What Got Us To Our Feet' blur the line between memory and melody, while 'Palo Verde' and 'Promise to Fade' linger like a half-remembered dream. This isn't ambient as background-it's a fully formed emotional landscape that is both meditative and melancholic.

Review: Mindcolour Music take a musique verite approach to IDM and braindance, preferring to use candid photographic studies for album artworks over the detailed pieces that adorned their earlier output. The first LP on the label comes by way of Global Aphasia, a shadowy UK producer whose Various Unreleased tunes from 2023-2024 here follow up the equally seemingly hypochondriacal self-release, 'AudibleLymph-nodes 1' in 2022. Their (its?) words: "mid 2023 - mid 2024 didn't really know what to do with these tracs since i can't get all these on soundclown. The mixing isn't always the best generally as most are made within the space of a few hours, with live mixdown." The simplicity of conveying the best essence of your craft despite unsatisfactory mixing is always fun, and a subjective statement from the listener's POV at best. Cut down from 32 digitals to just 10 here, 'Crucialchkdsk' and 'Septsummer (In A Fz10m)' bring BOC downtempo and toe-extending microtonal progressions to a scary good selection.

Review: Almost An Island unites Kenneth James Gibson with James and Cynthia Bernard (aka marine eyes) for a quietly stunning ambient collaboration (would you really expect anything less on this fine label?) Blending tape hiss, vaporous textures, pedal steel and delicate guitar work, the album evokes themes of impermanence and emotional connection and hints of Americana ripple through tracks like 'In Light Of' and 'Wide Open' while the lead single 'What Got Us To Our Feet' swells into an aching crescendo of voice and strings. It is a deeply introspective yet expansive record that demands you carve out a tranquil sonic space in which to hear it, and the results are intimate, cinematic and beautiful.

Review: On his latest album, Denver, Colorado musician and self-styled "former USAF baby-catching medic turned hippie abstract sound bath architect" Patrick R. Park enrols in the Berlin school, breaking from his premiership of the wondrous Ethereal Mother Tapes to lock down a decadal, decadent LP's worth of cosmic-not-cosmic loops. Echoing post-punk and glam-synth of the kind that might soundtrack a Stranger Things spinoff - but more maximal, glued together with the Pritt-stick of soft-clipped compression - the likes of 'Terror', 'Quantized' and 'Paramount' pin down the floating pappuses of true crime docu-music, platform video games with their pitchy arpeggios, and coulombs of dungeon-crawling aeration, the latter motif especially repeated on near-closer 'Zenith'. Use this record to soundtrack your next trek through Shadow Labyrinth, Evergrace or Wizardry 5.

Review: Stars of the Lid's debut might lack the sculptural finesse of their later classics but its mood is unmistakably theirs: listless, weightless, slightly faded at the edges. Made with a four-track, borrowed samplers and a shared instinct for stillness, it drifts between raw tape experiments and embryonic drone compositions - half-thoughts suspended in air. 'Down' and 'Lagging' sink into grainy oblivion, while 'The Swellsong' offers a rare hint of light through the murk. Rather than aiming for the transcendence of The Tired Sounds..., this feels grounded, like something captured at night through thin apartment walls. There's charm in how fragile it all sounds - the gear was basic, the fidelity low, but the intention is clear. From student radio collage work to long-form ambient abstraction, this is where that arc begins. It's a modest first step that holds uncanny weight, not for what it says, but for the space it opens. Even now, it feels like a secret - not quite formed, but already whispering something deep.

Review: Different Rooms finds Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer file their patchwork method of tape-splicing, improvisation and studio play down to a fine, sharpened nib. Written and assembled between late 2024 and early 2025 in their adjoining Los Angeles studios, the album weaves live performance with granular synthesis, viola stacks, and manipulated field recordings gathered from train platforms, city streets and domestic spaces. Unlike the drifting landscapes of Recordings From The Aland Islands, their newest LP as a pair keeps rooted in a replication of deep urban listening, attuned to passer-by street textures. Jeff Parker and Josh Johnson appear on archival improvisations folded seamlessly in; though despite outside collaborations the sequence loosely mirrors itself, with motifs returning in altered form, echoing the project's core idea: though we move through different life "rooms", they are in uncanny enfilade, each ghostlily similar to the last.

Review: Its creator vanishing shortly after its 1978 release, SAB's Crystallization has quietly gathered a mythic status among collectors of Japanese ambient and environmental music (like you). Recorded in Osaka by a then 19-year-old "recluse" who later vanished into the Rajneesh movement in the US, the album remains to this day his only release, an unclaimed vapour dispatch of eerie, home-recorded precision. Though touched by the spectral fingerprints of Eno and the Obscure label, SAB's blend of synths, field recordings and classical motifs doesn't follow any clear school or tradition. This new edition, transferred directly from the original tapes in 24bit/48kHz, represents an early forerunner of the Kankyo Ongaku movement, in which there is renewed interest.

Review: Maine-based composer Keith Kenniff returns as Goldmund with a work of quiet grace and stillness. These piano-led pieces unfold with the hush of memory, gently evoking the liminal spaces between waking and recollection. ‘The One Who Stands Still’, ‘Before I Sleep’ and ‘Darnley’ are barely-there sketches, yet their minimalism never feels hollow—each note lands with intent, suspended in air like breath. Violinist Scott Moore adds an aching human trace, subtly woven into the texture without ever dominating it. As with much of Kenniff’s work, the emotional resonance lies in restraint: no dramatic arcs, no post-rock crescendos, just the patient blooming of tone and decay. Tracks like ‘We Begin Anew’ and ‘Sprig of The Pine’ operate like recollections—slightly blurred, incomplete, yet deeply felt. It’s a space free from resolution, sitting outside time, where melody becomes suggestion rather than statement. Kenniff’s background in scoring for film and documentary is apparent, but the real strength here is in what’s left unsaid. It’s a study in understatement, where the faintest gestures hold weight, and where silence itself feels like part of the composition. A slow, essential listen for anyone drawn to the intimate edges of ambient and modern classical.

Review: Ambient auteur Hiroshi Ebina is back with another of his superbly soporific long players and once again offers up soothing sounds for the sleepless here. This album delves ever deeper into his signature analogue dreamcore sound which is crafted for quiet nights when bleary eyes gaze out to starry night skies. Through nine immersive tracks, the album transitions from shimmering twilight synths to more unsettling drones and darker tones made using an array of hardware tools that lend it a nice fuzzy, warm analogue edge.

Review: American musician, writer and autobiographer Benoit Pioulard's Stanza project began as a winter routine in 2015, with a Telecaster, a tape recorder, and one loop per day, like audio journaling in real time. What started as brief daily sketches in shifting tunings has since expanded into a decade-long exploration of texture, memory and tone. Stanza IV arrives as the most expansive of the lot: long-form, ambient meditations shaped during a turbulent period following the release of his last album Eidetic and the death of Pioulard's father. It's the first instalment to reach vinyl, and clocks in as the 10th release on his Disques d'Honore label.

Review: There isn't much info out there about this new and super limited ambient excursion from Mystery Circles, which leaves us only with the music. It's a charming and organic world of sound with lingering trumpet notes stretched out to infinity over textural motifs and sustained chords that are both melancholic and tinged with danger. Sometimes it's abstract sound design like on 'Glass & Steel' that gets the attention, at others more sweeping and traditional ambient like on 'Sounds From Light, Still In Darkness', but either way, this one is seriously arresting.
