A Mirror Of Dreams: The Progressive Rock Revival 1981 To 1983 by Andrew Wild
Cat: 1006427

For A Mirror Of Dreams, Wild has interviewed no fewer than 85 musicians and other participants in the early 1980s progressive rock scene
Notes: Kingmaker Publishing, run by Big Big Train founder Gregory Spawton and Prog magazine journalist/Big Big Train manager Nick Shilton, is delighted to announce the publication of its latest book. A Mirror Of Dreams - The Progressive Rock Revival 1981 To 1983 by Andrew Wild.

Following Kingmaker's two highly acclaimed books on Genesis (Genesis: 1967 to 1975 - The Peter Gabriel Years and Genesis: 1975 to 2021 - The Phil Collins Years) and several other successful publications (including the autobiography of Marillion keyboardist Mark Kelly, Marillion, Misadventures & Marathons), A Mirror Of Dreams is the first of two books by Wild which provide the definitive account of the intertwined stories of the six bands which led the progressive rock revival: Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, Solstice and Twelfth Night.

For A Mirror Of Dreams, Wild interviewed no fewer than 85 musicians and other participants in the early 1980s progressive rock scene. These interviews included most of the members of all the aforementioned bands as well as Abel Ganz, Airbridge, Comedy Of Errors, Electric Gypsy, Galahad, Haze, It Bites, Jadis, Janysium, Lahost, The Lens, Liaison, Multi Story, No-Man, Pride Of Passion, Quasar, Tamarisk, Trilogy and Twice Bitten. Additionally Wild spoke with key non-musical figures such as veteran Aylesbury Friars promoter David Stopps, former Marillion manager John Arnison and Nigel Hutchings, the former manager of the legendary Marquee Club in London.

Edited by Spawton and with a 2,000 word foreword by Prog magazine editor Jerry Ewing, the book features over 200 photographs and illustrations, many of which have either been previously unpublished or are very rare.

Spawton comments: "This is a book which I have long wanted to see written. It's the story of how, in the early 1980s, a number of rock bands ignored the naysayers and fashioned a second coming for the much-maligned and misunderstood genre of progressive rock."

Agnostic Front With Time: The Roger Miret Archives
Cat: 1054884 Rel: 09 Apr 25

Early archives from the collection of Roger Miret, chronicle the beginning of the New York Hardcore scene, and the DIY ethic that created the sound and feel of Agnostic Front
Notes: With Time | The Roger Miret Archives

"Agnostic Front was a product of one of the most notorious and dangerous times of New York City history. The band captured those times sonically and visually. An image and sound that could have only risen from the grimy streets of old New York City. A time when the struggle fuelled incredible branches of creativity not only sonically but mainly within the underground wave of Artist clashing with Punks evolving into an inspirational era fuelled by the New York City Punk boom that bridged and reached the world in many inspirational ways."

"These are some of my archives that I have cherished my whole life. A time capsule of an era where life presented the darkest days of my life with light at the other end of the tunnel and that light was ambient even though it all seemed in black and white there was that one colourful rose rising from the concrete grime of the New York City streets. That colourful rose was my life, my soul growing and reaching my maximum being and my purpose and path in life."
-Roger Miret

Early archives from the collection of Roger Miret, chronicle the beginning of the New York Hardcore scene, and the DIY ethic that created the sound and feel of Agnostic Front.

All Over The Place: The Rise Of The Bangles From The LA Underground by Eric Shade
Cat: 1037479 Rel: 04 Nov 24

Featuring an extensive discography and tons of previously unseen colour and black & white photos & ephemera, All Over The Place stands to be the crucial Bangles biography it was intended to be upon its conception
Notes: At long last, it's here; the massive biography on THE BANGLES ready for consumption, and it is nothing short of a whopper. This monumental project, started by author and unofficial band historian Eric Shade back in the 1990s has had quite a journey from start to finish. This insane overview of the early days of the members' obscure early groups, as well as an amazing snapshot of the sorely-undocumented Paisley Underground scene of early 80s LA, all the way up through the core band members' current projects, is a feat some never thought would be fulfilled.

For a band as huge and omnipresent as The Bangles still in are 2023, the revelation of their earlier efforts, such as the mind-blowing story of Micki Steele in the first lineup of the fledgling Runaways, while the Peterson sisters were rocking out in bands such as The Muze, Hollywood Girls, and The Fans right around the same period is the legendary stuff mostly outside of public knowledge. The intertwining stories of Susanna Hoffs meeting David Roback (later of The Rain Parade) and getting inspired by The Last, with Vicki & Debbi's growing interest in garage bands like The Unclaimed around town, All Over The Place shows how many moving parts were swirling around, generating a indescribable electricity around Los Angeles as the hardcore scene raged on the other side of the coin. As the Paisley Underground scene evolved during its short window, bands such as Salvation Army/The Three O'Clock, Long Ryders, and Dream Syndicate are given their long-overdue historical appreciation here.

With original bassist Annette Zilinskas, the girls formed The Colours, evolved into The Bangs, and caught the right ears after self-releasing their debut 7" single, eventually signing to I.R.S. Records and touring extensively. As they changed the band name to Bangles, the lineup once again shifted, with Micki Steele joining, fresh off her years of gigging around LA in her post-Runaways bands Elton Duck, Slow Children, and Toni & The Movers, and things really start to fall into place. With their impeccable taste in 60s covers in their unique moment in time, The Bangles story just soars off from there, showing the gut-wrenching process of navigating the 1980s major label recording industry as a pioneering all-female band. Tours with Redd Kross, English Beat and Cyndi Lauper, MTV Spring Break appearances, meeting and working with Prince, and the inevitable drama that comes with superstardom once the "hits" started to stack up, this is the story of the Los Angeles underground you really need to read.

Shade's meticulous research and wild enthusiasm is instantly contagious, uncovering heaps of information lost to time from early bandmates and forgotten fanzines and overseas interviews, with no stone left unturned. From the inevitable struggles to the righteous triumphs, The Bangles back story has never been explored this in-depth before, while perfectly encapsulating the fertile Paisley Underground they sprouted from (and will always be a part of). Featuring an extensive discography and tons of previously unseen colour and black & white photos & ephemera, All Over The Place stands to be the crucial Bangles biography it was intended to be upon its conception.

Cat: 1037481 Rel: 02 Oct 24

This definitive book unearths the EP's origins, history and cultural impact
Notes: The extended play recording. Not quite an album. More than a single. And not only an artefact of the vinyl era, the EP has survived and even thrived at every turn of the music industry's evolution, from vinyl to tape to CD to stream. This definitive book unearths the EP's origins, history and cultural impact and enlists nearly 50 music-industry veterans (musicians, scribes, producers, executives, superfans) to create a list of the 200 best EPs ever recorded and shapes these opinions into a book that seeks to trace the arc of the EP's development and, in so doing, chart the history of the music industry writ large.

From Dangerhouse to Touch & Go to Sub Pop to Flying Nun, and all roads in between, savvy labels have used the EP to great effect and its been the way to introduce bands in a less risky mid-sized format for decades. This super-interesting guide shows how the format developed and how it took on a life of its own, from early jazz & rock'n roll through the beat & psychedelic rock era, right on through punk, new wave, and post-punk, and into the alternative/indie rock era, right up to the modern age. This rousing guide through the mid-sized mindset features a huge swath of guest writers galore, each offering up their enthusiastic opinions on which EPs deserve your attention, divided by decade, along with all of their details on long-forgotten B-sides and extras that couldn't fit on the 7" version, yet easily pad out a 12".

Bright Young Things: The Art & Philosophy Of El Records by Mark Goodall
Cat: 1071910 Rel: 16 May 25

The first book detailing the history of influential indie label El records
Notes: Existing for a few short years (1984 - 1988), El records was perhaps the most 'cult' of the UK so-called 'indie' labels. El records was created in 1984 by Mike Alway. Alway was A&R man for Cherry Red, signing artists such as Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set and Felt. Alway left Cherry Red to help run Blanco Y Negro (an offshoot of WEA) but soon felt constrained by the conservativism of the commercial music sector and left to set up his own label. El was once described as 'the most innately English record label there has ever been' and yet had a global appeal. Alway must be the only record label boss to have had four songs written about him.

Alway's mercurial approach was to take complete control of the repertoire, the philosophy of the label's releases and even the titles of songs in the manner of pop impresarios of the past. Alway became a curator, selecting, shaping and overseeing the records issued on El. He employed songwriters proficient in classical pop techniques such as Nicholas Currie (AKA Momus) and Philippe Auclair (AKA Louis Philippe) who in addition to issuing their own records wrote, arranged and performed for other el artistes and used creative talentssuch as photographer Nick Wesolowski and designer Jim Phelan to create the El "look".

El had a unique flavour eschewing the traditions of rock and indie music of the mid 1980s, exhibiting instead a taste for 1960s bubblegum and chamber pop, the European chanson tradition, Latin rhythms and film scores (one of El's key players was child prodigy Simon Turner who wrote music for the films of Derek Jarman).

The ethos of the label was decidedly un-macho and many of El's key artists were female. El's first single "I, Bloodbrother Be" by Shock Headed Peters was an uncompromising gay anthem. Alway saw El as a celebration of elegance and beauty, in his own words, "a pop world beyond leather jackets and jeans". While record sales were disappointing, this unique blend was critically acclaimed in the UK and popular in America and mainland Europe while in Japan El had a profound effect, directly influencing the Shibuya-kei phenomenon that included Pizzicato Five, Cornelius and Kahimi Karie.

Bright Young Things is the first book to tell the fascinating story of El, one of the most influential indie labels of all time.

Burning Britain: The History Of UK Punk 1980-1984
Cat: 1047711 Rel: 09 Dec 24

The true story of the U.K. punk scene from 1980 to 1984 told for the first time by the bands and record labels that created it
Notes: As the seventies drew to a close and the media declared punk dead and buried, a whole new breed of band was emerging from the gutter. Harder and faster than their '76-'77 predecessors, not to mention more aggressive and political, the likes of Discharge, The Exploited and G.B.H. were to prove not only more relevant but arguably just as influential. Several years in the making and featuring hundreds of new interviews and photographs, "Burning Britain" is the true story of the U.K. punk scene from 1980 to 1984 told for the first time by the bands and record labels that created it. Covering the country region by region, author Ian Glasper profiles legendary bands like Vice Squad, Angelic Upstarts, Blitz, Anti-Nowhere League, Cockney Rejects and the U.K. Subs as well as the more obscure groups like Xtract, The Skroteez and Soldier Dolls. The grim reality of being a teenage punk rocker in Thatcher's Britain resulted in some of the most primal and potent music ever committed to plastic. "Burning Britain" is the definitive overview of that previously overlooked era.

Dancehall: The Rise Of Jamaican Dancehall Culture by Beth Lesser & Soul Jazz Books (reissue) (B-STOCK)
Notes: ***B-STOCK: Item shows signs of age***

New edition of Dancehall, Beth Lesser's seminal photography and style book capturing the rise of Jamaican Dancehall Culture in the 1980s. The book also features a new introduction by the British fashion designer and art curator Duro Olowu.

Featuring 100s and 100s of amazing photographs - all with accompanying text, interviews and biographies,'Dancehall' is an essential reference book for anyone interested in Reggae and captures a previously unseen era of musical culture, fashion and lifestyle in stunning, vibrant colour.

Aside from the music, this book is as much about Jamaican fashion and style. Beth Lesser's Dancehall photographs in this book have directly influenced fashion brands including Aime Leon Dore ('Kingston 1983' collection), recent Levi's Vintage and Farah collections.

Dancehall is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, drugs, guns, art, community, technology, and more. Born in the 1950s out of the neighbourhood soundsystems of Kingston, Dancehall grew to its height in the 1980s before a massive influx of drugs and guns made the scene too dangerous for many. Today Dancehall remains at the centre of Jamaican musical and cultural life. From its roots in Kingston in the 1950s to its heyday in the 1980s, Dancehall conquered the globe spreading to the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and beyond.

In the early 1980s Jamaica was in the throws of political and gang violence - photographer Beth Lesser ventured where few other dared and this book is a never-before-seen record of the exciting, dangerous and vibrant world of Dancehall.

Living in Jamaica in the late 70s and early 80s she photographed and documented a cultural explosion as producers, singers, DJs and soundsystems who all made a living out of the slums of Kingston. With unprecedented access to the incredibly vibrant music scene during this period, Beth Lesser's photographs are a unique way into a previously hidden part of Jamaican culture.

From The Streets Of Shaolin: The Wu Tang Saga by SH Fernando Jr (hardback cover)
Cat: 1041498 Rel: 17 Sep 24

The definitive biography of rap supergroup, Wu-Tang Clan (WTC), widely regarded as one of the most influential groups in modern music
Notes: This is the definitive biography of rap supergroup, Wu-Tang Clan (WTC). Widely regarded as one of the most influential groups in modern music - hip hop or otherwise - WTC has released seven albums [including four gold and platinum studio albums, as well as the genre-defining Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)] and has launched the careers of famous rappers like RZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and more. Beyond the musicians in the group itself, WTC has also collaborated with many of the biggest names in the game-from Busta Rhymes and Redman to Nas and Kanye West), and one is hard pressed to find a group who's had a bigger impact on the evolution of the hip hop genre.

S.H. Fernando, Jr. is a journalist who has interviewed WTC several times over the past several decades for publications like Rolling Stone, Vibe, and The Source. Over the years, he has "built up a formidable archive-including over 100 pages of unpublished transcribed interviews, videos of the group in action in the studio, and several notepads of accumulated memories and observations." The result is a startling portrait of innovation, collaboration, and adversity, giving us unparalleled access to the highs and lows of the WTC's illustrious career so far. And this book doesn't shy away from controversy-along with stories of the group's musical success, we're also privy to stories from their childhoods in the crime-and-cocaine infested hallways of Brooklyn and Staten Island housing projects, stints in Rikers for gun possession and attempted murderer, and million-dollar contracts that led to recklessness and drug overdoses (including Ol' Dirty Bastard's untimely death). Even more than just a history of a single group, this book tells the story of a musical and cultural shift that encapsulates and then expands beyond NYC in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Though there have been biographies written about the band, both from members (like RZA) and collaborators (like Cyrus Bozorgmehr), most of the material that's been published so far has either focused on a single member of the group's story, or a narrow timespan of their work. This book will not only feature interviews with all living WTC members and a comprehensive look at their discography, it also includes never-before-revealed insight into their childhoods and the neighborhoods that shaped them growing up. It's unique in its breadth, scope, and access-a must-have for fans of WTC and music bios more generally.

Fuse: 30yrs Of Making Noise by Koen Galle
Cat: 1054610 Rel: 05 Dec 24

30 years of Fuse. An essential for any raver or lover of electronic music history, this book is an archival work dedicated to the music heads who have kept their minds and ears open since 1994.
Notes: 30 years of Fuse. That's 1,560 weekends of love, techno, I LOVE TECHNO, Motion Room, party flyers, La Demence, renovations, label nights, sound isolations, Jeu de Balle, long shifts, noise complaints, stylus replacements, after-hours, legendary b2bs, compilations, resident DJs, On The Beach, emergency loops, and an unfathomable amount of tickets boisson.

2024 marked the nightclub Fuse's 30th year of continuous operation on Rue Blaes in Brussels. Belgium is home to cultural visionaries, break-the-mould characters, and prolific producers who helped shape the foundations of the electronic music scene we enjoy today. As a result, Fuse's story traces the outlines of the house and techno history at large. Through striking visuals, quotes, research, and storytelling, this book connects the dots between the rise of renowned artists and uniquely Belgian characters that crystallised Fuse as a temple of underground dance music.

From Detroit to the Marolles, Ricardo Villalobos to DJ Pierre, Carl Craig to Trish Van Eynde, Daft Punk to Deg, Laurent Garnier to Charlotte de Witte, Warp to Music Man Records, even Depeche Mode to Björk, this book documents not only the iconic performances and moments over the years but also the stories of those who took the risk of running a nightclub and the tens of thousands of dancers who poured their love, sweat, and tears into the labyrinthine walls of Fuse.

An essential for any raver or lover of electronic music history, this book is an archival work dedicated to the music heads who have kept their minds and ears open since 1994.

Keep on Fusin'.

Quote Jeff Mills:
"Fuse is a testament to the theory that "important" things have a lasting power. The unique chemistry of a well-educated audience, intuitive production, and a steady diet of masterful DJs through great curation make the club one of the best in the world. Being invited many times over the decades, I've never known The Fuse other than being a wild and adventurous atmosphere--it's addictive." Jeff Mills, 2024

Get Nuff Nuff Data Vol 1 by German Iraki
Cat: 1038434

A series of books exploring positive forces in contemporary music in relation to place and culture
Notes: Get Nuff Nuff Data is a series of books exploring positive forces in contemporary music in relation to place and culture.

This book opens the series with the stories of musician I Jahbar and his surrounding community, set in the outskirts of Spanish Town, Jamaica. In 2011 I Jahbar collaborated with a duo of California based experimental musicians, and his acrobatic performance on their track 'Spy', inspired the founding of a record label named 'Duppy Gun'. Their music was captivating like nothing before. It was difficult to frame, drawn towards an innovation in sound, while embodying some ancient energy. 'Duppy Gun' has paved its own unique path in dancehall music ever since, showcasing the power of international creative collaborations, by linking Jamaican lyricists with producers from different parts of the world. There's a little family formed around those musical projects, of goodhearted, talented individuals.

Led by a growing curiosity, German Iraki came to Jamaica, offering to create a visual aspect to the ongoing dancehall movement. During 3 weeks of collaborating with I Jahbar, the goal was to work on a shared vision of promoting the voices of emerging vocalists and documenting their creative spirit.

The feeling of being welcomed to step into an unfamiliar narrative inspired the creation of this series, examining the perceptions of ones belonging and idea of home. Through segments of monologues and conversations, nature and portrait photographs, the book portrays a bond between people and their surrounding land, what they seek to change or wish to cherish and preserve. Get Nuff Nuff Data is dedicated to the simple lines that connect us all, each individual story exists as a universal one.

* Part of the book takes place online, including access to 'unprintable data'. Exclusive video, audio, and downloads.

Go Out & Get 'Em Boy! Tales From The Wedding Present: Volume One Of The Official Autobiography by David Gedge/The Wedding Present (paperback)
Cat: 1028937 Rel: 18 Jul 24

This collected edition of David Gedge's 'memoir-in-comic-book-form' comes with forty pages of never-before-seen additional material and an introduction by Ian Rankin
Notes: The first instalment of David Gedge's 'memoir-in-comic-book-form' will be released in paperback for the first time by Scopitones books. The stories featured in this stunning 176-page, matt-laminated, graphic novel have previously only been available to readers of the tales from the Wedding Present comic book series. This collected edition comes with forty pages of never-before-seen additional material and an introduction by Ian Rankin. David has written this autobiography together with long-time musical associate Terry de Castro, and the stories are illustrated by virtuoso artist Lee Thacker. It's in chronological order, beginning with David's childhood in England and South Africa and continues up to the inception of the Wedding Present. On the way we learn about some of the romantic experiences that may have informed his writing, how he first met the legendary BBC presenter John Peel, and the true story behind the classic Wedding Present song 'My Favourite Dress'.

Reviews "An autobiography of the wedding present would be great on its own. An autobiography in beautiful graphic novel form? Even better!" Dan Vebber (writer, The Simpsons)

"This is brilliant! It's like the storyboard for a Wedding Present biopic." Marc Riley (broadcaster, BBC)

"As informative, funny and essential as David Gedge himself. Can I be in the movie when all this is franchised?" Tony Gardner (actor)

"This is the graphic novel indie music mash up that we have all been waiting for and only David Gedge could deliver. It's amazing!" Stella Creasy (member, British Parliament)

"This is a Wedding Present fan's dream come true. Pure unfiltered Gedge; the inside track on what makes him tick and anecdotes aplenty. Essential!" Mike Gayle (author)

"It's very typical of the wedding present to do an autobiography differently to everyone else... But the stunning illustrations in this book really bring David's stories to life." Louise Wener (writer, musician)

Vibrant images from the San Francisco Bay Area Punk Rock Scene in a deluxe hardcover

Happy Days by Jason Williamson
Cat: 928159

A collection of short-stories written by Sleaford Mods man Jason Williamson, depicting a grim and desperate world with his quality, working class humour
Notes: "A series of shit dominoes forever falling onto each other; the bloodline never stops creating a firm continual history of behavioural mess."

It's comedy night on the terminal ward. Jason Williamson returns with thirteen all-new short stories from a grim and desperate world where everything is either 'knackered and shit or new and shit.' Sound familiar? Here you'll meet roaming loners, twats in fast cars, hard men telling porkies, strong women who know the score, various music maniacs and sex-addled, whizz-infested pub warts galore. But it's not all abject fucking misery, Williamson's characters come alive and somehow manage to conjure some happy days from the endless, panicked slog of caged poverty and bad choices. So settle down for some porn barks, crap nature, terrible housing and dogging hotspots. Life a la fuckin sniff innit.

Jason Williamson is, of course, in the Sleaford Mods. He is also the author of 'Grammar Wanker' (2015) and 'Slabs from Paradise' (2017).

Het Altjid by De School
Cat: 1046120

A journey through the history of De School
Notes: De School is thrilled to announce the release of Het Altjid: a 160-page journey back to and through its now-defunct club, art spaces, cafe, and restaurant, which closed their doors on January 15. Het Altijd archives De School's essential facets, functions, spaces, and stories, from the pre-DS days to the moment the music stopped. In sync with De School's eight-year- spanning program, the publication is a sensory and experience-based format that crisscrosses disciplines and allows those who enter to define their own route. The release of Het Altijd follows the launch of Het Archief, the extensive sound archives unlocked earlier this year.

More than a final form of documentation, Het Altijd was created to be an experience in itself, expanding on the time-erasing sense of exploration that a deep dive into De School embodied. Preserved records such as architectural sketches and art documentation are interwoven with original imagery by various creative contributors, including semi-anonymous portraits of club regulars, and post-closing snapshots taken just minutes after the very last dance. Recurring throughout the publication, and featured on the cover, is the abstracted thermal imagery of artist Loes de Boer, who chronicled the 66-hour closing (Het Einde) while upholding De School's distinct sense of anonymity and wonder. In Het Altijd, the no-photo policy is simultaneously upheld and liftedileaving space to roam and relive De School one last time.

Het Altijd refrains from a singular storyline and exclusively features text found in, on, and around Doctor Jan van Breemenstraat 1. Left-behind wall markings, toilet scribbles and sticky notes from the basement were photographed and excerpted to form fragmentary, touching, and tongue-in-cheek poetry that revive individual and collective memories. In addition, the non-linear graphic design andilack ofibinding allows anyone to (re)arrange their very own De School encounters. Holding Het Altijd together is a translucent red cover featuring the instantly recognisable grid: a final nod to De School, the warm hue of its seemingly endless hallways, and its enduring, all-encompassing foundation.

Independent As F***: Underground Hip-Hop From 1995-2005 By Ben Pedroche
Cat: 1080518 Rel: 01 Apr 25

Exploring how a generation of rap artists rebelled against major labels and made music on their own terms.
Notes: For a glorious ten-year period from 1995 to 2005, hip-hop music received a much-needed shot in the arm from a generation of determined and wildly creative rappers and producers. They rallied against the increasingly formulaic and shallow world of mainstream rap, as well as a music industry unwilling to listen.

By releasing music on their own terms as independent artists-many adopting the mantra of being "independent as fuck" as a mission statement-these hungry creatives reclaimed their artistic freedom and wore it as a badge of honour. Most importantly, they also made a lot of excellent hip-hop. What emerged was a vibrant underground music scene that stretched from New York to Los Angeles, with influence reaching across the world.

Independent As F**: Underground Hip-hop from 1995-2005 explores how a generation of rap artists rebelled against the major record labels and made music on their own terms, celebrating individuality and creative freedom. It also traces the history of some of hip-hop's most respected artists, including MF DOOM, El-P, Mos Def, Kool Keith, and Madlib.

"Ben is an archivist of the highest regard. His Grown Up Rap pushes the myth and mythology aside for real powerful hip hop facts." Chuck D

J Jazz: Free & Modern Jazz From Japan 1954-1988 by Tony Higgins & Mike Peden
Cat: 1010008 Rel: 04 Jul 24

A remarkable large-format book covering some of the deepest, rarest, and most innovative jazz music released anywhere in the post-war era
Notes: BBE Music is thrilled to present J Jazz: Free and Modern Jazz From Japan 1954-1988, a remarkable large-format book covering some of the deepest, rarest, and most innovative jazz music released anywhere in the post-war era. Compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, co-curators of BBE Music’s acclaimed J Jazz Masterclass Series, the book also features a foreword by Japanese jazz icon, Terumasa Hino.

This is the first time a book of this type has been has been published outside of Japan and the first anywhere of this size and scale. It is a unique collection of over 500 albums of free and modern jazz recorded and released in Japan during a period of radical transformation and constant reinvention. An era that saw Japan return from the ravages of World War Two to become a global economic power and emerge as both a technological leader and an international cultural force.

Through a unique gallery of albums, J Jazz charts the development of jazz in Japan from the first stirrings of the modern jazz scene in the mid to late 1950s and on through the hard bop and modal jazz of the 1960s. It steers the reader into the radical directions of the 1970s when free jazz, fusion, post-bop, and jazz-funk opened up a growing number of Japanese jazz artists to a new global audience before consolidating in the mid to late 1980s with a musical scene that laid the path for the contemporary jazz generation to follow.

Over 500 full-colour sleeves from many of the leading names in Japanese jazz sit alongside rare and private pressings that tell a story of constant change and musical exploration. J Jazz includes profiles of several leading record labels such as East Wind, Frasco, King Records, and Nippon Columbia as well as critical independents such as Three Blind Mice, ALM, and Aketa’s Disk. J Jazz includes interviews with celebrated jazz photographer Tadayuki Naito, and pianist Tohru Aizawa, bandleader on the totemic spiritual jazz album, Tachibana Vol 1, as well as free-jazz record collector and jazz musician Mats Gustafsson.

The book also features a chapter on albums by non-Japanese artists that only received a Japanese release, with collectible, rare, and obscure releases by figures such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy, and Art Blakey. J Jazz includes Japanese jazz charts from some of the world’s leading jazz DJs including Gilles Peterson, Toshio Matsuura, Paul Murphy, and Shuya and Yoshihiro Okino. Among the specialist content is a feature on obi strips by record dealer and Japanese jazz expert, Yusuke Ogawa, plus a special article on Japanese Blue Note albums.

Across its 300-plus pages, J Jazz includes a detailed introduction contextualising the music, tracing the story of Japan’s fascination with jazz back before the war. It also features biographical information on many of the key artists involved in shaping the post- war Japanese jazz scene including Sadao Watanabe, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Masabumi Kikuchi, Masahiko Togashi, Terumasa Hino, Yosuke Yamashita, Fumio Itabashi, Masayuki Takayanagi, Takeo Moriyama, Isao Suzuki, and many more.

Krautrock Eruption: An Alternative History Of German Underground In The 60s & 70s By Wolfgang Seidel
Cat: 1071902 Rel: 25 Mar 25

A rousing counter-narrative to the usual depictions of Krautrock, written by Wolfgang Seidel, member of Conrad Schniztler's band Eruption and co-founder of Ton Stein Scherben.
Notes: Seidel's groundbreaking book, which includes unique historical photographs, paints a vivid picture of the old Federal Republic of Germany, with all of its contradictions and struggles. What is now celebrated as Krautrock emerged in this environment, and at the time was an attempt to contribute the soundtrack to the revolution. As a fly onthe wall, Seidel recounts the squats, demos and first concerts of bands such as Cluster, Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel. Just as precisely and vividly, he recapitulates the influence of minimal music composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, the origins of many Krautrock musicians in jazz and the role of the synthesiser.

Wolfgang Seidel delivers a captivating account on Krautrock that dispels many of the founding myths of the first genuinely German pop culture, which above all did not want to be German. In addition, the book is supplemented by a discography of the 50 most important Krautrock records, written by music journalist and Krautrock expert Holger Adam.

Translated from German by Alexander Paulick (member of influential Dusseldorf based avant-garde band Kreidler).

Notes: Title: Listen Up Punk! Punk Art Poetry

Author: Mal-One

Format: 84 Page Hardback Book Full Colour throughout

30 Punk Art Poetry Works set next to the artworks that inspired their writings.

About this book

This book is a collection called Punk Art Poetry. Poetry put together like a lyric to tell a certain story or explain a thought on some punk related maker. Some of these stories did actually turn themselves into a song which was released on Mal One's Punk Art imprint.

Most of these poems were influenced or inspired a piece of art I was working on. So Mal One has put together 30 of these ideas and put them next to the related work to give it all a bit more context.

A companion spoken word album 'Listen Up Punk!' is also available on the Punk Art label.
