808 Doves
Cat: KNB 01. Rel: 25 Jan 24

Disco/Nu-Disco
808 Doves (5:00)
Crystal Doves (4:44)
Review: Cheesy electro goodness from Canadian edit and remix machine Nick Bike, here indulging the humorous moniker Nicholas Bicicletta for the second of two 7" Kon editions. '808 Doves' comes through with glitzing hits, filter-freqqed lasershots, synth claves, and arpy sixteenths, all chalking up a downtown New York circa 1987 vibe. The free-as-a-bird theme is kept up with 'Crystal Doves', which concocts a sonic landscape picture of cathartic vocal gurgles and subby progressions, all against an epic collage made up of Crystal-Watery recognisance.

Review: This is a translucent vinyl yellow version (though we also have a regular black pressing) of some reissued soul treasure from 1983, penned and produced by the legendary Larry McGee. Over four decades old, it seamlessly blends disco, UK street soul, and boogie into an irresistible tune, perfect for both dance floors and romantic home listening. With lovestruck vocals, persuasive basslines, and sultry saxophone lines, "Space Lady" captivates from start to finish. Flip over this 7" vinyl, and you'll discover an extended version tailor-made for DJs, ensuring smoother deployment on the turntables. A true gem that shines bright, even after all these years.

Review: Gone but never forgotten, The Best Of Amy Winehouse is a poignant testament to the late singer's incomparable talent. This collection curates her most iconic tracks, from the most famous and soulful 'Rehab' to the emotionally raw 'Back to Black.' Winehouse's unique blend of jazz, r&b, and pop is on full display, showcasing her raw vocals and lyrical depth and of course each song is a window into her turbulent life, filled with heartache, addiction, and unbridled passion. Despite her tragic passing, Winehouse's music continues to resonate and this album proves she remains the most influential voices of her generation.

Review: We now know that Daman Albarn's face-less and animated Gorillaz project was way ahead of its time. The tunes still stand up, too, with early hit 'Clint Eastwood' one of the best they did. It gets pressed dup here to this cheeky and limited 7", its low slung and downbeat groove topped with dub harmonicas and the drawling vocals of Albarn. On the flip is the more sunny, big beat offering of '19-2000' (Soulchild remix) which is lit up with naggy vocal hooks and singalong verses that are ripe for cheery party sessions in the great outdoors.

Flight Of The Eisenberg (6:29)

Review: Ron's Reworks is a mysterious new edit label that deals in tweaking disco gems. Whether Ron is the name of the edit artist, or a nod to the fact these tunes might have been played Ron Hardy, we don't know, but we do know they are worth having: Gilles Peterson played the lush soul grooves of "Flight Of The Eisenberg" on his 6 Music show which should be all the support you need to know about, while "Heads" is a more deep cut of late night funk with playful riffs and a gorgeous vocal sample next to jazzy Rhodes keys. "The Jubes" ends things with a heartwarming gospel vocal from beautiful outfit The Supreme Jubilees that will leave you feeling warm inside.

Bada-Bongo (4:33)
Review: More from the mysterious Ron's Reworks series, which appears (though it has never been confirmed) to have been launched in tribute to late, great Chicago DJ Ron Hardy. The shadowy scalpel fiend (or fiends) behind the series begins volume three with "Revelation", a sparkling rearrangement of a life-affirming, piano-laden number that sits somewhere between jazz-funk, Latin jazz, spiritual jazz and disco. It is, beyond a shadow of doubt, one of the most positive tracks you'll hear all month. Elsewhere, "Games You Playing" is a synth-sporting slab of disco-funk heaviness, and "Bada Bongo" a percussive, break-driven, bongo-laden workout guaranteed to get limbs moving on the dancefloor.

Review: .Ron Basejam has always cooked up a wealth of characterful cuts across the house and disco spectrum. This unknown label is now home to a load more starting with the lovely soft focus chords and gospel tinged vocal bursts of deep house meditation 'We Need Change'. A house dub ups the energy a little with more cosmic sprinkles raining down over percussive grooves. 'BFG' then ups the disco quotient with elastic bass and leggy drums, a nice organic vibe and carefree chords. 'Blue' shuts down with some feel good soul and funk house fusion work.

Review: Opolopo is a machine when it comes to serving up superb disco, funk and soul sounds. He's done so for two decades on plenty of top labels from Toolroom to Version Galore to Gamm. This time out he finds himself on a self-released tip with X Machine which is a mash-up of James Brown. The original vocals cut through funky basslines and lots of big percussions as the loose drums rumbled on next to warming organ chords. The instrumental is a more direct to dancefloor jam.

They Speak Colour (5:41)
The City (6:03)
The Cull (3:24)
Review: Ron's Reworks, a series of scalpel jobs and lightly beefed-up reworks from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam, has now reached its fourth volume. Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

Javelin (dub) (9:26)
Review: There's plenty of hype swirling around this short-run debut from Londoners Adelphi Music Factory, with regular radio plays and appearances in a host of top DJs' set lists resulting in insatiable demand. It helps, of course, that "Javelin" is an absolute beast. Packed with energy, the A-side version sees them generate maximum sweatiness by working cut-up gospel vocal samples atop a loopy, full-throttle, techno-tempo disco-house groove. Honestly, it's one seriously heavyweight rub that's guaranteed to get dancefloors eating out of the palm of your hand. The B-side "Dub" is, if anything, even wilder and heavier, with the little-known outfit utilizing stretched-out, delay-laden vocal lifts and restless piano stabs over ten action-packed minutes.

Review: On the latest instalment of Palm Beach Records' Secret series, regular contributor Fred Hush is once again at the controls. This time round, we not only get unheard original cuts but remixes, too - including Hush and Dimitri Andreas's stripped back but stomping, ever-building 'remake' of Emmanuel Top's 'Acid Phase'. There's plenty to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the sub-heavy, subtly bleep-influenced hedonism of techno roller 'Close Your Eyes', a riff-heavy, warehouse-ready old school techno re-wire of 'I Say' courtesy of Noeda, and a ridiculously heavy, rave-igniting re-imagining of the same track by Klaudia Gawlas that could be compared positively to the work of Amelie Lens.

Review: Hip-hop meets razor rave beats head on as two DJ-friendly versions of well worn and much loved East Coast rap tracks end up on either side of this rather nifty 7". The title track is the more classic of the two - perhaps that's why it gets given the more subtle overhaul of the two. The flip is more of a head on collision between its subject matters, and we'd contest the more urgent and dramatic of the two as a result, although short of putting it on at the incorrect speed you'd find it hard not to succeed with such tools of the trade in your hand and/or box.

Over the years it has become a super rare and much sought-after record that only got an independent private press back in the 80s. It was recorded in Los Angeles and was the only release the outfit put out on their own label Spaceship Earth Recordings. As well as the deep cut funk and spine tingling vocals of that a-side, the more upbeat and driving boogie-disco of 'Be Your Own Best Friend' also features to make this a must-cop 12".

Review: US singer, songwriter and producer Van Jones served up his 'Finger Licking Good' in 1986 and it has become one of those super sweet mixes of disco, boogie and funk that will now cost you a chunk of your wages to own on vinyl - until now. It is the most notable tune in Jone's small but well-formed discography, which included justly one album with 1981's Time Has Made Me New. The Prince-style falsetto vocal is what adds the real spice over timeless 80s drum sounds, low-slung boogie bass and some lush chord work. The instrumental on the flip is for those who like it more discreet.

'Dawn Breaker' opens up with freewheeling melodies and loose drum breaks that makes for a nice sunny vibe run through with jazzy Rhodes action. Last of all is some playful swing that fuses house and hip hop over Hall & Oates bump and grind groove and filtered vocals. Useful tools for sure.

Review: There is some serious heat packed into this crucial two tracker on an unofficial new 12" here starting with a heart-melting vocal performance from LJ aka Larry James Reynolds whose buttery smooth sounds ooze soul over a nice hip-swinging disco beat with cool-as-you-like chord work. It's a real smoocher to get things on the floor feeling steamy and then Rene & Angela combine for the much more cosmic and introspective instrumental version of 'I Love You More' with its singing synth lead and lazy beats.

Review: We're assuming that the Revenge behind this new white label is not the same Revenge as the one who brought all new style to the world of disco and house some 10 or so years ago, or Peter Hook's of New Order fame's side project of the same name. This Revenge seems more focussed on locked in deep house and tech-slanted disco grooves to camp up early evening dancefloors. That's the case with the playful, hip swinging and raw tool that is 'Track 1' while 'Track 2' is a mix of dusty breaks and police sirens, 'Track 3' has razor sharp hi hats and smart synth filters over rugged bass guitar riffs and 'Track 4' closes out with a bastardised version of the moody from 'Strawberry Letter 23,' to our ears, over slow, scratchy deep house loops.

How Many Professionals
Review: Four cheeky mash-ups with a refreshing twist. "I Found My Danger" is a mash-up with a difference - hard-hitting funk drums with a jazz lick and classic lyric. The bass booms and the drums kick like a mule. There's definitely more than a hint of Mr Scruff. "Rub Skool" harks back to the best of funky disco. With clever use of samples, "Rub Skool" creates the feel of the old school. Using the vocal from a future classic, it has a solid groove. Huge on the dancefloor, it's both recognisable and fresh. "How Many Professionals" is a sneaky homage to 1970's TV. This tracks is classic boom-bap hip-hop all the way. Once again, a vintage lyric works perfectly with an edited cop show funk groove. This is so much more than your usual fourth track filler.

Review: Very limited pressings of this soon to be signed major label hot cake. Played by Pete Tong already, this is superb dirty bass-heavy electro house.

Review: New material from the Manchester grimestep maestro, Plasticman. Check a tabla fuelled rhythm, rising up under a beautiful indo-stringed melody. This is timeless sophistication gracing hybrid northern bass pressure - watch it knock your wheels off their axles.

Review: UK rapper Plan B's latest single gets a hideously dirty reworking from the mighty Chase & Status. Pure, aggressive drum & bass vibes for the dancefloor. On the flip, we get an exclusive hip-hop remix from the Prodigal Son. This is very limited and seriously big.

Review: Delerium/Hard Fi's "Silence" contains two excellent under the counter remixes, the first an epic retooling of Delerium's "Silence" and on the flip they rework Hard Fi's "Cash Machine". Finally repressed!
