Unafraid of the wet and subnautical, 'Abisso' dives headfirst into the lower yonders of the abyss, with the title track inspiring visions of a pulsating humanoid submersible confidently plunging into the fishy midsts of an underwater nowhere; while 'Venula' hears our main character chancing on an underwater acid rave, and 'Insidie' finding a rare pocket-vacuum of air. Review: Tinted Windows is the wondrously, almost hilariously cast supergroup comprising guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame, Taylor Hanson of Hanson, bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, and Cheap Trick's Bun E. Carlos. Brace yourself for a reminder of this ingenious grouping this 2024: the debut self-titled album was first released in 2009 and though it intended to synergise each founding members' successes as part of their earlier projects, also did fantastically well at portraying a contemporary take on the 70s and 80s pop rock quintessence. Lead singles 'Nothing To Me' are instantly reminiscent of Ferris Bueller in the drop-top, though all come dashed, even sprinkled, with a hint of 90s pubic power punk a-la 'Stacy's Mom', as we should expect from a Fountains Of Wayne adjacent.

Review: Early on in Muslimgauze's (Bryn Jones') career, the musician released two ultra-mysterious releases on the equally mysterious label Hessian, which some speculate might've been comprised entirely of Jones himself. Hammer & Sickle was one of these two early LPs from the faux Arabic auteur, and was notable for its distinct lack of any back cover artwork (who needs a visual stimulus when you've got such great music on board?). Though still indicative of Jones' work as Muslimgauze, superfans will note that this release sounds a little more formative than some of his later releases, owing to its lessened use of Middle Eastern instrumentation and sparser production in general. B-sider 'Fear Of Gadaffi' is the most intermittent in this regard, revelling more than anything in the simple effect of spring delay on sampled, freeform perc hits.

Review: If ever there was a band destined to get the Analogue Productions treatment, it's surely Steely Dan. The go-to group for audioophiles, yacht-sailing dreamers and frankly everyone in the whole damn world, the Dan's highly-prized studio obsession deserves the finest possible fidelity. Originally released in 1980, Gaucho was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's swansong until reuniting in 2000. Musically, it was a departure for the group as they honed their compositions into more patient, atmospheric pieces which held down a mood instead of striving for dramatic sweeps and shifts, but that doesn't detract one jot from the might of tunes such as 'Babylon Sisters' and the eternally funky 'Glamour Profession'. Now those songs sound the best they possibly could thanks to this exacting reproduction.

Review: Before I Die have been putting out some high-grade leftfield delights from respected operators like Bernardino Femminelli, Tungusku and most recently Sewell & The Gong. Now it's the turn of Klangkollektor, indulging a collection of hazy dub excursions which sit somewhere near Balearic splendour, piano-charged melancholy and isolation tank meditation. In the dub tradition the approach is consistent and evenly paced, but it's certainly not aiming for any kind of typical Jamaican sound. Review: In the depths of the turbulent 1970s, amidst the corruption and inequities of Brisbane, Australia, emerged a formidable force - The Saints. Review: Spanish hardcore punk label and distributor La Agonie De Vivir reissue the indelible No Straight Angles LP by No Fun At All, originally released by Burning Heart Records in 1994, but which also saw a resurgence in popularity in 2016 thanks to its first reissue by the former label. The Swedish punk band 'quit while they were ahead' in 1999, but their legacy has proven difficult to wilt, and No Straight Angles is by far their best-known project. A huge fifteen tracks all burning through buzzing spread-guitars and claustrophobic hooks, this is the sound of clunky comings-of-age and foregone conclusions, embraced with full fervour by Eriksson, Jansson and co. A great, original record which is especially useful for quelling anxiety, ironically by affirming that anxiety.

Review: As the title suggests, Broadcast have collected all their demo recordings made between 2000 and 2006 and compiled them onto a single 14-track record. But that's not the main piece of news: sadly, this one marks the end of releasing from the band, tying the bow on an game-changing career to say the least. Many of these tender tidbits were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon; it's an impressive flex to be able to flaunt your one-offs and pack them onto a single recorded finale. What's more, the connotations aroused by form - demos - as well as the sonic content of these gems plays nicely up to Broadcast's now well-established aesthetic, which is one for the ages, to be sure. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after bandmate Trish's passing: 'Come Back To Me' and 'Please Call To Book' which was her response to Broadcast's 2006 'Let's Write A Song' project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song.

Review: A veritable sonic warhammer in the unconscious sub-terrain that is British hard rock, Jerusalem's self-titled record was first released in 1972, yet came reissued in 2021 via Lion Productions in the run-up to its almost full half-century anniversary. Fronted by Deep Purple's very own Ian Gillan, Jerusalem's brand of proto-heavy metal was raw and razor-edged in sound, with very little effects or treatment applied to its instrumental parts, a flex that signifies pure talent. Gillan's vocals on the likes of 'Frustration' and 'Primitive Man', the album's highlights, are snarly but tempered by a real 'down for it' emotion, as propulsive electric strums abound in the surround mix, nailing the album's overarching theme of sexuality and tantalisation.

Review: Up next in the gamut of Coil-adjacent reissued gems is this 3xLP vinyl version of The Threshold Houseboys Choir's Amulet. Having gone down in whispered legend as the ultra-secret limited-quantity direct mail-order (we could go on) holy grail that flaunted Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson's then latest semi-secret solo guise, Amulet was an exemplar of Marshall McLuhan's definitive aphorism, "the medium is the message," coming housed in a hand-assembled 4xCDr mini-set enclosed in an original, circular Thai Amulet case. The second and final release of this short-lived and much coveted moniker, Amulet, now hearing the vinyl reissue it deserves, is a rough collection of obsessive ritualistic diamonds in the rough, stylistically drawing on dub, drone, power electronics and East Asian music, and brought together by Christopherson's trademark digitally generated choir - whose verbalisations are wilfully incomprehensible, with the intent to sound uncanny, dreamlike - and which he often reverses and timestretches to unsettling effect.

Review: Sony records is celebrating 50 years in music in 2024 and coincidentally, Diamond Dogs by David Bowie is also sharing that same timeline. Considered by many, to be the last album released of his glam rock period after disbanding his backup band The Spiders From Mars. With his career direction in some question and longtime guitarist Mick Ronson gone, you have arguably one of the interesting studio albums of his career. Led by the hit 'Rebel Rebel', the album marked a turn for Bowie's songwriting having been inspired by a recent interview he did for Rolling Stone with WIlliam S Burroughs. An admirer of Burroughs' working methods and his 1964 novel Nova Express, Bowie revealed he had begun using Burroughs's "cut-up" technique as a way for inspiration. Ultimately, Diamond Dogs is most important for being the transition point from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke which catapulted Bowie's success in the United States. While only having one modest hit from the album, Diamond Dogs was still a big success. In hindsight, it would also help establish David Bowie as an artist where fans wanted to hear his entire work and not just a single's worth and to Bowie, that showed that his personality was winning over his audience and that his new direction was a good choice.

Review: Ample Habitat is the new album by the Toronto duo Shabason/Gunning and follow up to 2019's highly acclaimed debut Muldrew. Their brand of blending electronic and jazz music has set them aside from many similar. Imploring many strategies from both members, there are many unique sounding compositions that evolve differently than normal we think. Time signatures that are honored in electronic music are thrusted into the freer form jazz genre with great excitement like in 'Sea Ices'. The jazz expression becomes confined by mathematics giving the pieces like 'Parkette' almost an oddly beautiful juxtaposition. In 'Barbeau Peak' and 'Crystal Fake' the clicks and cut style is used to great success. Toronto has a long history of creative genres in electronic music. This duo is taking those roots and expanding on them further. If you are looking for something different that blends jazz and electronic music then stop right here!

Review: In the age of digital communication, Transmission Towers certainly make the world go round, oh, and the other kind that handle our telecoms aren't half bad either! Jokes aside, this five-piece electro-funk supergroup, fronted by vocalist and percussionist Eleanor Anorbea Mante, and backed by a star cast of synthesists and vibe-engineers including Mark Kyriacos Kyriaco, Ian 'Budgie' Jones and Cait Walker, make for a Liverpudlian talent-medley. They find nominal inspiration in the invisible comms transmitted between receivers near the river Mersey, and channel this potent analogy into the subtler and more unconsciously affecting communication that is body language in the dance. Review: Udacha family band Zdehvedo Gob is a collective of musicians who all hail from various cities around the world. It consists of Udacha label head Alexey Kalik as well as drummer Roman Shestaev and Gamayun associates Anton Dvoenko and Stas Mitrofanov and they all got together in the studio in Moscow in summer 2023 and the results are now presented on this new album. Employing an organic music approach to instrumentation combined with subtle electronics, the group go wild for various combinations of off-kilter percussion, organ, chant and birdsong in full ceremonial swing, they trace a path through the various branches of 20th century minimalism, pan-global folk-ism's and the harmonious collective consciousness that My Life In A Bush Of Ghosts encapsulated. It's a gorgeous mix of world, jazz, spiritual percussive, experimental music that rides on nice loose and vibrant rhythms with a great mix of synthetic and organic sounds all offering plenty for the mind as well as the body to get excited about.

Do You Have The Force Volume 2: Jon Savage's Alternative History Of Electronica 1978-82 traverses the worlds of electronic music, disco, experimental, and proto-techno and looks for the similarities and differences between those niche sounds with music from the likes of John Foxx, Soft Machine, Cabaret Voltaire, I Signori Della Galassia and many more. The meticulous curation is a testament to Savage who is deservingly celebrated as a renowned cultural commentator, writer and filmmaker.
