Review: The Cowboy Bebop was an anime series that was much loved for its soundtrack albums by Japanese composer and instrumentalist Yoko Kanno and his band the Seatbelts. The sounds were weird and wonderful affairs that made odd connections between seemingly disparate worlds - jazz, rock, J-pop and electronic, often with a curious aesthetic. Just this year, Kanno has returned to soundtracking the series on Netflix so this reissue is sure to connect with fans old and new. It is largely instrumental, with big band pieces next to more ambient passages and extensive alto sax deployment. As far as cult records go, this one is right up there.

Sparks have always been a hugely theatrical and decidedly camp experience, so it wasn't really a surprise to learn the brothers Russell and Ron Mael were working on a musical extravaganza with Leos Carax, the French movie director who shot to fame in the mid-1980s with Boy Meets Girl. Telling the story of a provocative stand up comedian and his wife, based on this score it's certainly going to wear its heart on the sleeve. But then again, this is musical theatre.
As for the soundtrack itself, you're pulled into the narrative before you even realise it thanks to the prescriptive lyrics that literally say what's happening on screen for much of the time. It's operatic, grandiose, and incredibly dramatic, spanning classic balladry and more contemporary electronically-informed takes on the musical tune blueprint. Weird, but hugely entertaining.

Review: Baz Luhrmann's latest biopic concerns the high king of rock n' roll himself, Elvis Presley. While remaining a slick epic in classic Luhrmann style, it refuses to shy away from the shadowier and murkier side of Elvis' story that is much less acknowledged; his fatal puppeteering by his own manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Review: Fans reckon this is one of the greatest ever soundtracks, and it's hard to disagree no matter your musical persuasion even in face of a huge catalogue of Japanese classics on a similar tip. Though not revelatory in terms of style, the bebop execution is beautiful and the mastering at the famous Van Gelder studio is tip top. The tracks range from high intensity, stab fuelled dance tracks to country tinged interludes via sombre trumpet solos that will make your heart bleed. It's cinematic, widescreen and filled with emotion.
