Shucks, every year is a big year for London Elektricity's imprint, but 2014 seems especially big with huge albums from the likes of Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y and now Metrik. Repping his game, the label and the genre at the highest level, Universal Language is a highly accomplished calling card for Metrik that showcases his ability to create barn-storming rave homages ("Make The Floor Burn"), arena-slapping sing-along lighter-raisers ("Human Again", "Infinity"), techy underground rollers ("Slipstream") and unifying cuts that give the legendary Underworld a run for their money ("Resonate"). Maintaining a fine balance of great songwriting, muscular production and straight-up dancefloor abandon, this speaks to every corner, every sub genre and every tiny pocket of D&B. Just as the title suggests.

Review: Since signing to Hospital last year Krakota has delivered a progressively on-point stream of rollers and bubblers. Hot on the heels of "Ice Hands" and "Ghosts" comes the Bournemouth artist's first fully fledged EP and it's something of a vibe marathon: "In The Area" soothes with soft harmonic basses in a similar way to early Netsky or perhaps Nu:Logic material, "Citadels" is a floaty, cosmic meander through the jungle milky way. Review: The last time we heard from Hospital Records veteran Matt Gresham AKA Logistics, the Coronavirus pandemic was only in its infancy. The release of Love Letters, his first EP for over two years, is therefore a welcome development. It's packed to the rafters with warming, colourful and melodious drum & bass in his long-established trademark style, with sparkling and dreamy opener 'Love Letters', the slightly more percussive 'Yoga' and the picturesque, laid-back two-step beauty of 'Continuation' all moving the heart as much as the head. Arguably best of all, though, are the twinkling 'Secret Satellite', featuring fine vocals from Zoe Philips, and the head-nodding dancefloor soul of Frank Carter III hook-up 'Nightingale'.

Review: Following her arrival on the label in January, south coast soulstress SOLAH delivers her first full Hospital EP. Flexing the most musical, shiniest sides of the genre, positive vibes flow from edge to edge as she takes centre stage over a range of sweetly treated beats. 'Everything Is Possible' is all about the big harmonies, 'Fly' is a light, skippy bubbler with LSB style flurries and big subs humming beneath the textures while her arrival track 'Constant' still sparkles like it did back in January before 'Elevate' closes the 12" on a dreamy note. The vocal side of drum & bass has never been as healthy as it is right now.

Review: When Hospital Records launched some 16 years ago, it was primarily to focus on the more soulful side of drum & bass. While London Elektricity's imprint is now about so much more than that, many of its' releases still bristle with an expansive soulfulness. This mixed, mid-price, two-disc affair pays tribute to the label's soulful side, delivering sinewy, string-laden gems, vocal anthems, and liquid D&B classics from the likes of SPY, High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Phuturistix and, of course, London Elektricity. Who mixed it isn't revealed, but they've done a great job; both discs ripple with melody, emotion and, of course, skittering dancefloor rhythms. This is Fast Soul Music, after all.

Some highlights include Muffler's "Pinball Fantasies", which rocks an interesting glitchcore/Planet Mu-style lead melody, an unusual sound for a Hospital banger. Another surprise is the slinky, tech-inspired vocal tune "Turn Up The Music" by Camo and Krooked, a tune that craftily keeps the listener on tenterhooks as it threatens to spill out into complete mayhem. Every bit as strong as the first time around, this is yet another chance to gorge on 22 unmixed D&B future classics from Hospital. Sick indeed.

Review: Carlos "S.P.Y" Lima made his name by putting a decidedly positive spin on drum & bass, filling his 2012 debut album What The Future Holds with string-laden, post-liquid tracks that fused floor-filling rhythms with a breezy, carnival-friendly musicality. On this belated follow-up, the Brazilian producer flips the script, delivering a murkier - if no less beautifully produced - set filled with darker, moodier moments. Given his way with mood and rhythm, it's unsurprising to find that Back To Basics Volume 1 hits home hard. Whether laying down and tech-tinged late night roller ("Brooklyn (Dub)", "Jelly Belly"), a discordant freak-out ("Riding The Void") or an "Inner City Life" style vocal groover ("Dusty Fingers", featuring Diane Charlemagne), Lima is at the top of his game.

Review: Surprisingly, it's been four years since Hospital Records last artist-led mix CD. Whether or not London Elektricity's imprint is attempting to rediscover their roots is unclear; either way, there's something pleasingly stripped-back and old-fashioned about this no-nonsense "mixtape" from rising star Etherwood. The DJ/producer picked up a clutch of gongs at last year's D&B Awards, and here takes on a warm, rich, rolling and inviting foray through drum & bass's more melodic pastures. While firmly floor-focused, with tracks from both big hitters and lesser-known names (it reportedly also includes nine previously unreleased exclusives), there are plenty of deeper, looser moments, with Etherwood touching on liquid D&B and deep jungle just as much as big room-friendly smashers and soulful anthems.
