PJ Harvey's ongoing vinyl reissue series has finally arrived at 2007's White Chalk, an album that at the time was thought of as something of a curveball from the West Country singer-songwriter. Unlike its predecessors, which were celebrated for their raw, fuzzy, stripped-back alt-rock sound, White Chalk emerged after Harvey decided to write an album of "piano songs" - despite having no experience playing the instrument herself. With Flood and John Parish handling production duties, the set's tracks were generally lighter and breezier sonically, with a little more polish and much more restricted use of electric guitar. Harvey's lyrics are as distinctive as ever, though, offering a clear contrast to the pastoral and oddly traditional feel of the music.

It has enjoyed a return to the spotlight thanks to being identified as a key track in Season 4 of Netflix's massively successful 'Stranger Things' series, in which it adds character to Argyle, Jonathan Wheeler's weed-loving new best friend. Review: Polly Jean Harvey continues to open up her archives of home recordings, with 2011's Mercury Prize winning Let England Shake - arguably her most lauded album to date - becoming the latest album to be reissued in work-in-progress demo form. The original album was a little more musically complex and aesthetically picturesque than her earlier work, with generally softer guitars. In contrast, these early demo versions are sparse and lo-fi, sometimes with fuzzier electric guitar motifs and even more impassioned vocals. Perhaps more surprisingly, many also feature samples of other songs - rock and roll, rockabilly and easy listening oddities - at the beginning, with Harvey adding her contributions while loops from the selected tracks running in the background. It shouldn't work, but does, and offers a unique insight into her creative process,

Review: Four decades have now passed since Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark released their third album, Architecture & Morality, so to celebrate they've decided to offer up this collection themed around the set's three successful singles: 'Souvenir', 'Joan of Arc' and 'Maid of Orleans (the Waltz of Joan of Arc)'.What it really is, though, is a companion piece to the original album, which added warmth - and guitars - to OMD's previously stark and icy sound. So as well as the singles we're treated to a string of unheard demos, live recordings and B-sides, all of which further flesh out the development of the band's sound during the recording of arguably their most celebrated album.

Review: Following the release of their first album in decades, 2019's Encore, the Specials planned to record a reggae album. Unable to get over to Jamaica to record it with local producers due to the pandemic, they instead decided to explore their love of dissent through music by recording an album entirely made up of covers of protest songs. It's a simple idea, deftly executed, with the veteran British band opting for stripped-back sound that lets the songs speak for themselves. There are some interesting choices throughout, including songs by Talking Heads, Chip Taylor and Frank Zappa all feature. Highlights include a reggae influenced version of Leonard Cohen's 'Everybody Knows', a gravelly take on the Staple Singers' 'Freedom Highway' and an acoustic interpretation of Bob Marley's 'Get Up, Stand Up'.

Review: Over the last 12 months, Polly Jean Harvey has delivered remastered versions of many of her most acclaimed albums, while also releasing collections of demo recordings for each set. The latest to get this treatment is her critically acclaimed set Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. As with her other collections of demos, most of the early versions showcased here feature little more than Harvey on guitar and lone or multi-tracked vocals. This raw and stripped-back approach gives new life to some songs, with highlights including the heart-aching 'The Mess We're In' and fuzz-soaked 'This Is Love'.

Review: Back when Paul McCartney fist left The Beatles he has said he was rather lost and in a depressive state. He decided to set up and record a lo-fi album at home where he played all the instruments. That was McCartney I. McCartney II followed with a similar set up and earlier this year once the coronavirus pandemic hit he decided to repeat the trick a third time. He plays all the guitars and drums himself, with just one mic set up in the room. If he didn't like what he heard, he moved the mic and played bits again. The results is a varied album that covers plenty of ground with all the skilful songwriting you would expect.

Review: New albums from Aussie fusionists the Avalanches don't come around that often, so the appearance of We Will Always Love you four years after its predecessor, Wildflower, is genuinely big news (it previously took them 16 years to record the follow-up to their acclaimed 2000 debut, Since I Left You). Somewhat predictably, they've hit the mark once more, supplementing their usual dense sample collages and multi-coloured, genre-bending compositions (a little psychedelia, Balearica and synth-pop here, a dash of dream pop, future R&B and synth-pop there) with vocals and musical contributions from a dizzying cast-list of like-minded guests (think Neneh Cherry, Johnny Marr, Jamie XX, Blood Orange, Tricky, Cornelius and Kelly Moran). Hard to pin down but royally entertaining from start to finish, We Will Always Love You is a triumph.
