Review: Hans Zimmer is unquestionably one of the greatest composers of modern times. More specifically, he's perhaps the greatest living film composer, having scored more movies than we could ever hope to list here. Recent credits including the much-hyped and long-anticipated Dune redo, and Denis Villeneuve's rightly celebrated sci-fi epic, Blade Runner 2049.

As you guessed from this web page, The Dark Knight is another title he put his name to, all the way back in 2008. Christopher Nolan's second Batman instalment, arguably the finest in the history of the franchise, really needed something rooted in menacing, unsettling atmospherics, with rousing moments capable of restoring hope even against some near-impossible odds. He did just that, as this evocative powerhouse of a classical album proves. Not exactly easy listening, prepare to be moved in more ways than one.

Review: It's been a wee while since William Orbit released a solo album - eight years, in fact - but we'll forgive him; after all, he's one of the world's most in-demand producers and remixers. The Painter, whose title alludes to his favourite hobby (he painted the clubber illustration), is predictably packed with star turns from guest vocalists, sonically picturesque, and full to bursting with picturesque melodies, dreamy chords, intricate instrumentation and nods towards a variety of styles he's long been associated with (think downtempo, ambient and deep synth-pop in particular). Highlights include the shuffling, sun-splashed Georgia collaboration 'Bank of Wildflowers', the twinkling pianos, deep bass and Kate Bush-esque vocals (provided by Polly Scattergood) of 'Colours Colliding', and the Ibiza-friendly ambient swell of 'Planet Sunrise'.

Review: This retrospective trawl through the career highlights of legendary soul group War was initially intended to drop on Black Friday 2020, but for various reasons has only just found its way into record stores. Pressed to striking gold-coloured vinyl, it contains the band's most celebrated moments - the fiery funk-soul brilliance of 'Me & Baby Brother', the decidedly psychedelic and low-slung 'Low Rider', the Hammond-heavy 'The World is a Ghetto' and reggae-soul hit 'Why Can't We Be Friends' - as well as lesser-celebrated but no less impressive gems such as 'The Cisco Kid', the exotic 'Gypsy Man' and the harmonica-toting brilliance of 'Southern Part of Texas'. In other words, it ticks all the right boxes and contains some genuinely killer cuts.

Review: If a single compilation can be attributed to beginning the oldies revolution, it is easily the original 1972 double LP Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968. Compiled by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with assistance and input from guitarist and music historian Lenny Kaye, this deceptively haphazard 27-track aggregate became the cornerstone of the serious appreciation of '60s underground music. One important factor that unifies and likewise levels the playing field for all 27 sides chosen for the first run of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968 is that they were all issued as singles. There are both US Top 20 charting pop hits - "Dirty Water" (Standells), "Liar, Liar" (Castaways) and "Psychotic Reaction" (Count Five) as well as several inspired sides that never made the Top 200. Each track is also given a brief bio, which was researched & penned by Kaye. His comments go beyond the facts & figures of the typical discography, relating to the music as the personal experience that it was.

Review: Twenty-five singles, all in original sleeves. This is far 'deeper' than anything we've seen on this label before, rivalling Now Again or Cali-Tex for quality indie status while blending in the cream of the major label crop from the same period (Warner's, ATCO Josie, Reprise, Loma, etc). Packaged in an incredible heavy pasteboard box, with a handle (in the old style) and psychedelic-shack inspired artwork on all 4 sides.

Review: It's a good thing everyone has seen the seminal slice of 1980s pop culture that is The Lost Boys, because anyone who hadn't would not deserve to go anywhere near the movie's nostalgia-drenched soundtrack. A collection of tracks that perfectly scored a film about teenagers taking on a community of vampires in a small beach town, you can't listen to any of this without picturing one of the most iconic horror comedies of a generation.

Needless to say, then, the music is hardly subtle stuff, although it's not all as brash as the INXS and Jimmy Barnes barroom rock 'n roll riot, 'Good Times', or the sex-soaked saxophone pop rock of Tim Cappelo's 'I Still Believe'. Counterculture, which the flick tried to celebrate albeit in a big studio kind of way, is represented through outsider anthems like 'People Are Strange' by Echo & The Bunnymen, and Thomas Newman's Wurlitzer organ, big band orgy 'To The Shock of Miss Louise'.

Review: Can any film hope for the perfect synergy between curated soundtrack, moving image and mood that Lost In Translation achieved? Sofia Coppola's melancholic reflection on Tokyo through Western eyes plays out like an especially emotive dream, and that's thanks in no small part to the regal tones of Kevin Shields' shoegaze imprint punctuating the thoughtfully selected songs. From Squarepusher at his most tender to Shields own My Bloody Valentine and fellow guitar-drone legends The Jesus & Mary Chain, there's heaps of atmosphere spilling out of this soundtrack, and so tethered to the film is the music you could drop the needle on this one and find yourself right back on the streets of urban Japan.

Review: Atlantic Records was home to many of the legendary singers, songwriters and producers who defined the sweet sound of the early 1960s and '70s soul. Rhino Records uncovers forgotten classics drawn from Atlantic's vast library and brings them together for a pair of single-disc compilations, 'Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Brothers' and 'Atlantic Unearthed: Soul Sisters'. Both albums feature remastered versions of hard-to-find singles, some making their CD debut; B-sides of hits and previously unreleased music by the kings and queens of soul. Franklin opens the collection by putting her unmistakable stamp on Frank Sinatra's signature showstopper, 'My Way.' Originally recorded in 1970, but only released on vinyl as part of an Italian compilation. 'Soul Sisters' also includes five songs previously unreleased anywhere before: Margie Joseph's cover of The Temptations', 'It's Growing', their follow-up to the hit 'My Girl', 'Patti Labelle & The Blue Belles' 1969 recording of "(1-2-3-4-5-6-7) Count The Days", which was originally cut by brother-and-sister duo Inez and Charlie Foxx; a cover of the Fontella Bass classic 'Rescue Me' recorded in 1970 at the famed Muscle Shoals studio by Dee Dee Warwick-Dionne's sister; 'Ain't Nothing Gonna Change Me' by The Sweet Inspirations, a quartet of back-up singers who stepped out of the background in 1968 for a string of R&B hits; and 'I Ain't That Easy To Lose' by Bettye Swann, who had hit in 1967 with 'Make Me Yours', Soul Sisters gives (often overlooked artists their due) with music by Esther Phillips, who recorded 'Cheater Man' for Atlantic in 1967, a funky single penned by the celebrated writing team of Chips Moman and Dan Penn. The album also features former gospel singer, Laura Lee's 'What A Man', a song released by Cotillion in 1969 as a B-side of 'Separation Line'.

Review: "Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo / Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo / Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo..." Nobody could accuse Third Eye Blind of poetic metaphors on the smash hit 'Semi-Charmed Life', lead single from this, their 1997 self-titled debut, but we can all reflect on the fact the song has everything necessary stick to your mind like glue, and defines an age that we can rightly feel longing towards.

The late-1990s were, upon reflection and in comparison with today, lacking in cynicism and very much styled with hearts-on-sleeves. Even if back then we thought we were defined by skepticism. Third Eye Blind's take on post-grunge alternative rock kind of epitomises this - not an outright rejection of commercialised music, yet anything but throwaway.

Review: Music to tingle the more spine chilling tendrils of your soul, this latest album by one of London's greatest ever bands, deliver a third and final instalment in a trilogy of LPs. It follows Bloodsport and Night Thoughts of 2013 and 2016 respectively, with this effort drawing on new adventures in field recordings, spoken word elements and choir. Romanticism and classical are abound too, like the dire classic that is "The Invisibles", helping bring the album to a reflective end, while others like "Life Is Golden" tenderly sways in waves of emotional support and melancholy. It is an cinematic listen through and through, with the Blair Witch beginnings of "Don't Be Afraid If Nobody Loves You" just the start.

Review: St Germain's second album, Tourist, is 20 years old. To mark the occasion, the man behind the pioneering jazz-house project, Ludovic Navarre, has decided to offer up a remixed version. Or, more specifically, a partially remixed version, because most of the mixes on offer are takes on the original set's most celebrated tracks: 'So Flute' and the peerless 'Rose Rouge'. This is not a complaint though, because the majority of the reworks are superb. Check for example the 'Rose Rouge' tweaks from Atjazz (bouncy, percussive, jazz-house warmth), Ron Trent (deep house-tinged jazz-funk),Jovonn ('90s US house) and Nightmares on Wax (dense, bass-heavy and full of stunning solos). Black Motion's 'Anniversary Mix' of 'Sure Thing' is deep, drowsy and detailed, while Navarre's 'Amapiano Mix' is as warming and luscious as you'd expect.

Review: One of the greatest house albums of all time is 20 this year. To mark the occasion the legendary French producer behind it - Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain - has selected a sympathetic team of expert remixes to add their own spin to the still classic source material. Atjazz is the perfect man to open up thanks to his deep, lounge and of course jazzy house style. Osunlade then brings his shamanistic sounds to 'Sure Thing' and it glows as a result with Ron Trent later tackling the anthemic 'Rose Rouge' and slowing it down to a lush jazz dance. With DJ Deep, Nightmares On Wax and more also featuring, this is a must cop.

No Time To Cry (John Peel Session 1984)
Emma (John Peel Session 1984)
Review: As the title suggests, this excellent collection gathers together tracks from three live sessions the Sisters of Mercy recorded at the BBC's Maida Vale studios between 1982 and '84, during the formative years of their lengthy career. The first session, recorded for John Peel in August 1982, contains a quartet of early live favourites, including their popular cover of the Stooges' '1969', while the second - a session for David 'Kid' Jenson' - boasts versions of tracks from the classic goth-rock EP The Reptile House (as well as a surprise Dolly Parton cover). Best of all though are the tracks from their 1984b Peel Session, which were laid to tape around the same time as the Leeds outfit was recording its debut album.

Review: Jamaican reggae and dancehall star Sean Paul did a lot to popularise the genre in the UK and US way before the current wave of artists who dominate. Dusty Rock is his seance album from back in November 2022 and it spawned plenty of chart-climbing singles that helped it, and Paul, go on to become a worldwide phenomenon. Of course, the standout single that still gets plenty of hammer is 'Gimme The Light' while 'Like Glue,' 'I'm Still In Love With You' and 'Get Busy' are all bangers, too, on a record full of big hooks, fresh rhythms and big energy.

Review: Swedish pop rock duo Roxette were one of the country's breakout acts in the genre. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of their third album 'Joyride', Rhino Records have seen to a due repress in a plethora of formats, including single LP, 4xLP, and even a limited orange marble vinyl version. Remembering the proto-balearic ballad-belters' monumental rise to number 1 on the Billboard 100 chart in May 1991, this album initially sold more than 11 million copies, setting a record previously not achieved by any other Scandinavian act. This version, however, also adds a whopping 35 new and unreleased bonus tracks; check out the night-riding, cutthroat bit that is 'Hotblooded', which was initially intended to take the place of 'Joyride' as the album's lead single.

Review: Danny Wilde and Phil Solem formed The Rembrandts in Los Angeles in 1990, after meeting in the 80s pop/new wave band Great Buildings. While they'll always be known for the phenomenal smash 'I'll Be There For You' (Theme from Friends), they created a host of harmony-filled, literate, and guitar-driven songs including the soulful 'Just The Way It Is, Baby'. Those signature classics plus the favourites 'If Not For Misery', 'Save Me' and 'Johnny Have You Seen Her?' are among the 18 tracks featured here along with two defining Great Buildings cuts including the propulsive single 'Hold On To Something'.

Review: Originally released Stateside six weeks ago but now finally available in the UK, this deluxe vinyl reissue of Magic & Loss should be an essential purchase for all vinyl loving Loud Reed fans. The set itself remains one of Reed's most dynamic and well thought out solo sets, with his usual grizzly guitars and even grizzlier vocals being toned down in favour of half-sung, half-spoken monologues, lighter arrangements, and occasional bluesy touches. This time round the album has been remastered, pressed to heavyweight vinyl, and stretched across three sides of wax (the fourth side features a rather fetching etching). There's also a tidy new insert. Yes, it costs a bit more than a regular gatefold reissue, but the extras are worth it.

Review: Remarkably, it's 25 years since the release of Lou Reed's seventeenth solo album, Set the Twilight Reeling. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Reed has decided to offer-up a fresh vinyl edition, this time on audiophile-friendly heavy wax with an accompanying booklet. To aid sound quality, the album has now been stretched over three sides of vinyl, with the fourth featuring an etched image of the album's artwork. It's a beautifully presented reissue all told, though it's the quality of the music - typically fuzzy, lo-fi and dominated by the twin attractions of Reed's proto-punk guitars and weather-worn vocals - that impresses most. While not one of the most celebrated sets in Reed's epic catalogue, Set The Twilight Reeling is still a hugely impressive and involving album.

Review: Triple J Live at the Wireless is a recording of The Ramones gig at the Wireless Capitol Theatre, Sydney, Australia, July 8, 1980. It was broadcast on the radio back then and has never officially made it on to vinyl until now. The legendary NYC punk rockers played 23 tunes, many of which are super rare tunes that they never played again on this tour. For this Record Store Day it gets pressed up to 180g vinyl and limited to 13000 copies worldwide. Raw and visceral, it captures the band at their most abrasive best and is a real timewarp back to their (gabba gabba) hey-day.

Review: The Ramones are one of those bands that everyone agrees on, to some extent, before disagreeing. Such was their career trajectory. Unanimously, the first three albums - 1976's Ramones, 77's Leave Home, and Road to Ruin (1978) - were all bonafide 20th Century works of wonder. End of the Century, which landed as the decades switched over, is where views start to divide. As such this collection of their LPs from the next ten years, or so, may not immediately jump out and grab everyone.

That's a real shame, and hopefully this package, which is the first time these records have been reissued on vinyl, will go some way towards making people remember exactly how good the vast majority if their 80s output was. Pleasant Dreams, Subterranean Jungle, and Too Tough To Die are exceptional outings that are guaranteed to put you off whatever it is you're listening to from this millennium. Throw in Animal Boy, Halfway to Sanity, Brain Drain and Still More Stuff, the latter itself a retrospective of unreleased bits from this era, and we think this is a real punk winner.

Review: Formed in Forest Hills, NY, in 1974, this quartet of quintessential punk forefathers blitzkrieged out of NYC's legendary CBGB scene and into world fame with three loud, lean, hard, and fast albums before the Sex Pistols even took their first shot. Besides basically inventing punk rock, Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy outlasted almost every one of their legions of followers, delivering their signature pop and garage-flavoured chainsaw sound for over 20 years, through a string of infamous albums and 2,263 concerts together. Spanning 1976-1995, this new collection features 20 classic tracks, including 'Sheena Is A Punk Rocker', 'Rockaway Beach', 'Rock 'N' Roll High School', 'I Wanna Be Sedated', 'Pet Seminary' and 'Blitzkrieg Bop'.

Review: This important album and piece of true electronic music history gets a re-issue; on 180 gram vinyl. What can be said for this album that has not been said already? Well, it is known for the classics "Halcyon (On & On)" and "Lush" and the brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll are not just UK rave legends but pioneers of electronica that is for sure. Named after Greater London's orbital motorway, the M25, which was ground zero for the rave scene of the late eighties. This album is as seminal as it gets and a true zeitgeist of a moment in electronic music's history. Re-issues don't come much better than this!

Review: Biggie's posthumous opus is loaded with hip-hop lore. Just listen to Sean 'Puffy' Combs chatting, "it ain't over" over the beep of the heart monitor. That's how raw feelings were when Life After Death landed, just 16 days after his death. The topic of death was already woven into his music on Ready To Die, and so the ominous signs on tracks like 'Somebody's Gotta Die' weigh heavy in the context, even after all these years. Still, the bangers come thick and fast - will anything sound as iconic as 'Hypnotize'? Well, if you thought you knew the album inside out then check this, a Super Deluxe Edition across eight discs with every radio edit, club mix and unreleased demo you could ever dream of. It's a monumental issue of a monumental work - one of the most vital in all of hip-hop history.

Review: Decades after he died, pioneering rapper Christopher Wallace aka Biggie aka B.I.G remains a hip hop giant, not least for us here at Juno HQ. He had the flow, the character, the lyrics, and showed all of it on his masterclass album The Notorious BIG. It is now getting a well deserved reissue on double vinyl, with all the original tunes included. There are uber-hits like the ubiquitous 'Juicy', tracks that make astute social commentaries about the black experience such as 'Everyday Struggle' and then some darn right killer grooves like 'One More Chance' and 'Big Poppa.' RIP to the greatest to ever do it.

Review: Last month marked the 50th anniversary of the release of Blue, Joni Mitchell's most celebrated album. To coincide with this momentous birthday, the legendary singer-songwriter has decided to put out a box set containing remastered versions of first four studio albums she released, all of which were initially issued by Reprise Records. The peerless Blue is on there, of course, alongside her beautifully sweet and stripped-back 1968 debut, Song to a Seagull, the unconventional harmonies of Clouds (1969), and 1970's Ladies of the Canyon, arguably the first album in which Mitchell genuinely developed her artistic vision. The remastering work is superb, with each finger-picked riff and strummed chord audible in stunning definition.

Review: The music of Joni Mitchell will never go out of fashion and so it is that much of it is in the middle of a big reissue run. Joni's voice and songwriting has rarely ever been topped by anyone in any genre, let alone the folk and Americana worlds she is best known in. Song To A Seagull is one of many long player testaments to that and was a remarkable debut in 1968 which soon marked her out in a class of one. The album is known for having been mixing poorly the first time around so has been sharpened up for this reissue meaning both sides of the record - labeled 'I Came to the City' and 'Out of the City and Down to the Seaside' - sound superb.

Review: A whole host of superb Joni Mitchell albums are in the process of being reissued and Clouds is one of them. For many, this is one of the best LPs Joni ever recorded and the stats back that up - it is BPI certified gold and it also won a Grammy in 1969 for Best Folk Performance. Join went on to win another nine such awards after Clouds, which came on May 1, 1969 and features the iconic self-portrait on its cover. Alongside one of Joni's best-known songs on 'Both Sides, Now,' other gems included are the delightful 'Chelsea Morning' and 'The Fiddle and the Drum'.

Review: The Asylum Albums is the latest in a string of long-planned archival re-issues of Joni Mitchell's globally adored work. Together with her late-manager, Elliot Roberts, the pair announced in 2020 that fans would have an opportunity to get their hands on some of the Canadian folk, jazz, pop and rock doyen's previously unreleased stuff, while also revisiting seminal albums.

Each box set in the series follows a similar format, with original albums packaged together with brand new artwork by Mitchell, with a second musical outing for each era containing things most of us have never heard before. The Asylum Years comprises the first four albums she released for Asylum Records, and is therefore part one of the exploration of that period - widely considered a seminal era for her sound.

Review: Country swampers Little Feat reissue their lesser-known album 'Live At Ultra-Sonic Studios'. A live album performed for a small, intimate assembled studio audience, this recording finds them live at Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY in 1974. Mastered directly from the original pre-broadcast tapes, this one is a heads' introduction to the band - for the seasoned country rock fan not shy of a raw old live album now and again.

Review: Combining rock & roll, blues, country, rhythm & blues, and jazz, Little Feat may not be as familiar as many of America's other great guitar groups, but their impact and influence cannot be understated. Take the 1974 Rolling Stone magazine interview with Jimmy Page, for example. A true rock legend, he cited this lot as his favourite band bar none, which tells you everything there is to know. The rock and roll band's rock and roll band, or something like that, this recording was captured during Little Feat's undisputed heyday, five years before founder, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lowell George collapsed in a hotel room and died from a heart attack, leaving other members to disband and some to reform nine years later. It's electrifying stuff, packed with ideas and imagination, elements of honky tonk, swamp, and late-night barroom whisky chugging tones, marking the aforementioned Page out as a man of discerning taste.

Review: 21 years ago, Lil K.I.M. debuted at the number four position point on the Billboard Chart with her hugely commercially successful and certified Platinum album The Notorious K.I.M. Mixing up all the hallmarks of hip hop - sex, guns, drugs, and cash - with her own vulnerability, it makes for a record filled with highs and lows, hard beats and more tender tunes. The production - this time without the help of Notorious B.I.G. who made her previous one so hot - is still lush and filled with smart samples.

Review: This reissue of Canadian country pop sensation K.D. Lang's 'All You Can Eat' sheds a historical light on the album's hurtful, frank themes of social comparison, consumer culture and daydreaming. For fans of divinely smooth, clean and romantic love songs in the post-country continuum, this 2021 version is pressed onto a special 180-gram orange and yellow coloured vinyl run. Produced with longrtime collaborator and guitarist Ben Mink, we're reminded that this is one of the cleanest sounding albums we've ever heard, blending a stage-ready musicality with Lang's unwaveringly perfect voice - choice moods include the chromatic 'You're OK' and the popping ethereum of 'Infinite And Unforeseen'.

Review: R&B saxophone giant King Curtis was at the top of his game on three consecutive nights in March 1971 when he was the opening act for Aretha Franklin at a trio of historic concerts at Bill Graham's storied Haight-Ashbury venue (he also led the backing band for the Queen of Soul's headline sets). Originally released one week before Curtis' tragic murder in August of that year, this extraordinary live disc spotlights the musical mastery that made him a legendary talent. Curtis rips through a soulful tour de force of top R&B, rock, and pop hits of the day, backed by his ace rhythm section the Kingpins, organist Billy Preston, and the Memphis Horns throughout. Famed writer Dave Marsh noted in a four-star review for the Rolling Stone Album Guide that "Curtis the bandleader is at his absolute best . . . . The powerful communication these players had with each other produces a set that is a model of intelligent choices made without sacrificing spontaneity" Almost 70 minutes of stellar concert highlights, remastered to sound better than ever. Captured live at San Francisco's Fillmore West on March 5, 6 and 7, 1971 from original master recordings produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin. Features King Curtis on tenor and soprano saxophone solos leading the Kingpins, the Memphis Horns, and Billy Preston on organ. The original 1971 album plus five bonus tracks, alternate versions and unused songs, previously available only on the very limited-edition, now out-of-print Rhino Handmade title Don't Fight The Feeling: The Complete Aretha Franklin & King Curtis Live At Fillmore West. Includes the classic 'Soul Serenade', and 'My Sweet Lord' featuring Billy Preston on vocals.

Review: What is left to be written about the debut Joy Division album that hasn't been written already? Well, not much except to say if you've never heard it, you must. This is the more raw of the two studio albums, powered mainly by the foundations laid down by bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. But although the rudimentary electronic experimentalism of its successor Closer are missing - with the possible exception of 'She's Lost Control' - Martin Hannett's production job creates an uneasy world of magical reverbs and echoes that lure in the listener. From its iconic, Peter Saville sleeve to classic songs like 'Shadowplay' and 'Interzone' - which started life as a cover of Nolan Porter's Northern Soul cult hit 'Keep On Keeping On' - this is the template that effectively launched a thousand bands, from indie and post punk to goth and beyond.

Review: RECOMMENDED
70 years in the entertainment industry, 80 Grammy Award nominations (and 28 wins), joint-first African American to be given a nod at the Academy Awards for Best Original Song (alongside writing partner Bob Russell), and the first African American to be made musical director and conductor of those Oscar ceremonies. Even uttering the name Quincy Jones fills the soul with reverence, not least as he's one of the only people we know of who managed to attend their own memorial service, following a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 1974.

Suffice to say, he recovered, and would continue to write scores for the silver screen for another decade or so, albeit with far less prolific output. Dollars arrived a couple of years before that game-changing medical emergency, and the soundtrack is very much Jones. Packed with jazz, soul, rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll, and funk, each genre is realised in a way that makes the songs feel authentic and brand new.

Review: While it's true to say that when they came together in 1965 The Incredible String Band were, ostensibly, an acoustic folk group, even in these early days they mixed in elements of folk, blues, bluegrass and jazz, akin to an American style jug band, and very different from any other performers or groups on the folk scene in England and Scotland. By the time they released their two most rightly celebrated albums, The 5000 Spirits and The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter in 1967 and 1968 respectively, The Incredible String Band had come to embody the notion of the hippie ideal. They were extraordinary records, incorporating Indian and African traditions and effectively presenting 'World music' for the first time, some 25 years before the term was coined. Right now, as folk music goes through one of its regular revivals and has become hip once again under the umbrella of nu-folk, alt-folk or twisted folk, call it what you will, The Incredible String Band now find themselves revered gurus of this new scene. Since the ISP began performing together again in 1999, they have been embraced by these younger musicians both here and in America and just last year flew the flag for the old guard at the Green Man Festival along side the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, Espers & Joanna Newsom. It's a fitting time to present a new introduction to the Incredible String Band, here drawn from "The Elektra Years", a groundbreaking and exhilarating 5 year period from 66-71.The collection is a convenient starter pack. You'll hear nothing in the music of today to compare with the unique sound of the Incredible String Band.

Review: Happy Mondays first essayed their fusion of rock n roll, dance-club beats, hip-hop and funk on "Bummed", a giant leap onwards from their debut album "Squirrel And G-Man". The 1988 release of "Bummed" showed the group's sound had begun to gel. In particular, Shaun Ryder's incoherent bluster of non sequiturs, surreal imagery, and verbal threats came into its own. This Collector's Edition features the original album, now re-mastered and expanded on CD one with the addition of the "Rave On EP" plus a clutch of bonus B-sides and mixes. CD two is an entire disc of extended mixes such as the Vince Clarke remix of "WFL" and the rare promo-only "Deadstock" mix of "Hallelujah".

Superfinos Negros (BSO Habana Blues)
Review: Favourites on Charlie Gillett's BBC show, Cuban outfit Free Hole Negro have taken the world music scene by storm since the inclusion of 'Superfinos Negros' in the Habana Blues soundtrack. Black beans are common food in Cuba. Frijoles is the name of one of the most traditional dishes full of beans, the main source of energy for the poor who live out in the countryside and for the street children in the city. Another big energy source in the universe are "black holes," large massive areas which scientists believe exist in the universe. Together, black beans and black holes are the energy sources from which Free Hole Negro draw their explosive and spontaneous sound. The band was formed in 1999 and by mixing their inspirations from Latin with the underground rhythms of Havana (hip hop, R'n'B, reggae, jazz and funk.) Free Hole Negro create a new musical universe, a fusion of sound which is completely their own. They called it free hop. Even though it has been seven years since the band was first formed, it was not until they participated in Benito Zambrano's film Habana Blues from 2005, that their music reached the world outside Cuba. The film is about Cuba's underground music scene and it paved the way for bands like Free Hole Negro's international breakthrough.

Review: Some of the finest soul albums of all time are not studio sets, but rather live recordings that capture the energy of the greats at the peak of their powers. Aretha Franklin's Oh My Oh My: Aretha Live in Philly 1972 is one such example. Backed by a band of hugely talented musicians, the two-hour concert recording sees the undisputed Queen of Soul deliver spine-tingling recordings of stone-cold classics ('Rocksteady', 'Respect', 'Oh Me Oh My', 'Spanish Harlem' and so on) interspersed with some genuinely brilliant cover versions. The album was first released on CD way back in 2007, but this marks its' belated and much deserved release on vinyl. In a word: essential.

In the film itself, it was the movie's main stars Irene Cara and Lonette McKee who mostly sang the tunes but this recording features the Queen of Soul Aretha singing them at Curtis's Curtom studio in Chicago. He composed and produced all the tunes and here they are pressed onto sealer vinyl for the first time since they were first released. It's a feel good selection whether or not you have seen the film.

Review: On March 5-7, 1971, the one and only Queen of Soul headlined Bill Graham's world-famous rock venue Fillmore West. The triumphant three-night series of sold-out concerts, which the legendary singer has since called a career highlight, was the vision of Atlantic's Jerry Wexler, who'd signed Aretha and produced her classic studio recordings. In looking to win her a broader audience, Wexler turned to the musical home of San Francisco's flower children for crossover success. Her connection with the enthralled audience proved intense, and the shows were a seminal breakthrough for Aretha's own peerless legacy and for the popularisation of soul music overall. Backed by the super-charged rhythm section of King Curtis and The Kingpins, Aretha is in peak form on a diverse set of classic songs that dramatically show why this 15 x Grammy winning artist - and the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - is one of music's all-time greats of any genre. Two CDs featuring two hours of concert magic, remastered to sound better than ever-the original classic live album plus a second disc of alternate rarities. Disc 1 features the original single-disc album, updated to present two previously edited tracks in their entirety including Franklin's momentous duet with Ray Charles on "Spirit In The Dark." Disc 2 is comprised of rare alternate versions previously available only on the very limited edition, now out-of-print, Rhino Handmade title Don't Fight The Feeling: The Complete Aretha Franklin & King Curtis Live At Fillmore West. Highlights include 'You're All I Need To Get By' 'Mixed-Up Girl' and 'Dr. Feelgood' and more.

Review: Since 2019, Fleetwood Mac has used Record Store Day to deliver "alternate" versions of the band's most famous albums. These are comprised of demos, early recordings and alternative mixes from the period that have laid dormant in the archives for decades.
This box set - which weirdly drops just as the band's Christine McVie is widely mourned - brings together these 'alternative' albums - the bluesy 'Fleetwood Mac', gazillion-seller 'Rumours', the rambling and epic 'Tusk', 'Mirage' and 80s power-pop-goes-AOR masterpiece 'Tango In The Night' - alongside a disc of rare live recordings of various fan favourites. As you'd expect, many of the versions are either stripped-back, laidback or more acoustic, though there are some genuinely revelatory alternative arrangements -not least an even deeper, warmer and dream-like early take on 'Mystified' whose effects-laden drums are mesmerising.

Review: Prepare to be wowed by this reissue of a classic Roberta Flack album. It is one that is now 50+ years old so comes on special clear vinyl. It topped the charts in 1972, some three years after it was actually released in 1969. Of course, it is best known for the tune 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' which was in Clint Eastwood's movie 'Play Misty for Me'. It went on to stay at number one for six weeks and then won the Grammyr Award for Record of the Year in 1973. Allegedly the record only took 10 hours to complete in its entirety, and what a record it is.
