Review: Notorious disco protagonist, DJ and producer, Al Kent returns with his latest dance-floor tour de force. His updated take on 'Gold Wave' is a tasteful reinterpretation of Japanese producer Waq Takahashi's tribute to the soulful roots of vintage disco.
Clocking in at an epic 11+ minutes it's wholesome, uplifting and unsurprisingly reminiscent of a classic Walter Gibbons rework. With incredibly tight musicianship and accomplished production, complimented by soaring orchestration, It's hard to believe this was recorded in Japan in the 21st Century and is not some long lost Vince Montana recording that's been gathering dust in a New York recording studio since 1976!

Review: A little more than a year on from his first appearance on Local Talk, Philpot Records co-founder Michel "Soulphiction" Baumann returns to the much-loved Swedish imprint. Naturally he's in fine form on a loose but on-point cut that sounds like it emerged from one of Baumann's now legendary lengthy live jams. The A-side "Hi Phife Mix" of "Beehive" is loopy and hypnotic with "French Kiss" style hooks bubbling away atop seemingly non-stop machine drums. The flipside "Classic Mix" strips things back, with Baumann peppering clanky, early Chicago house style drums with a more fluid take on the now familiar hook. Best of all though is Jamie 3:26's "Windy City Bump" remix, which is the kind of sweaty and hypnotic jack attack of which his hero Ron Hardy would have approved.
Review: With track titles such as "Death Up Close", "Something On Your Mind" and "Shuffling Stoned", it's not going to surprise anyone to learn that Shannon Lay's beautiful long form is a reflective, introverted and tender accomplishment. A place where acoustic guitars regularly lull us into dream-like states of consciousness, the fact you also get a truly stunning voice packing opiate qualities adds to the feeling of escaping into a fantasy. It's not all buttercups and rainbows, mind. And nor should it be. This, after all, is Lay, the guitarist from scuzz-loving LA garage punk quartet Feels, not to mention a solo artist whose last release arrived via a label someone set up especially for her. Those looking for grit will find themselves coming up short, as efforts like "November" prove, this one's vulnerable, thoughtful, heartfelt and comes with more than a wistful longing.

Instantly tom rolling into a neo-electro commodity, 'Voice Inside' undulates with lustrous vocals that stand as the tracks core. Pads cling to bleeps and guitar chunks that evaporate with alternating delays. 'Voice Inside (French)' adds a sensual linguistic twist, although the elements remain the same, they feel so different. 'Voice Inside (Dub)' completes the A, stripping tones back and chopping the duration to find yet another gorgeous avenue.
On the flip, Backwoods Remix adds to the original atmosphere with a face scrunching bass-line and pulsating 4/4 kicks that embraces the not so distant future. Last but by no means least, the mighty Craig Richards' signature 808s pound on the remix to close the B. Pulling darker tones to pitch shifted vocals, this minimalist beat composition is perfectly suited for vigorous floors.
Review: Courtesy Of Balance is back right in time for kick your summer off in style by welcoming fellow French producer Gunnter, owner of Normandy Records. All three tracks have got that classic quality to them that'll please those deep and tech house afficionados. Naturally influenced by the golden age of the late 90's uk sound, Gunnter has digested it down to three to-the-point weapons, all endowed with the 3 sacred elements of proper tech house : jacking beats, wonky basslines and deep chords. The proof's in the pudding... drop the needle on the rekkid !
Review: Dan Piu is the man behind the long running techno label "Moto Music" and also the driving force behind "deepArtSounds". The Alphaville ep is nothing less than a showcase of his signature atmospheric, textured sound that defines his overall production style. Having releases as early as 1997, we're sure you'll enjoy the music from this seasoned veteran of electronic music.
Review: HOMAGE goes from "out here" to "really out here" with their sixth release from Mr. Sunshine, a brand new duo from London artists Danvers and Luke Campion. Just like sunshine, this combo pack of techy rollers and UK bass really lights up the dance floor. Starting strong with "U Don't Know Me," Mr. Sunshine aim straight for the dome with a heaving house bomb that might blow up your summer. A cut deeper than the rest, "My Knife" is a slice of UK bass with speaker rattling capability for peaking crowds. Rounding out the project is "God Chord" a breaks influenced bass track equipped with cheeky vocals and a stuttering acid line. Bringing everything full circle is NYC treasure and rising star, Justin Cudmore, who's flipped the standout "U Don't Know Me" into an equally massive club weapon. Folks get down in the sunshine!
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.
Review: We were really impressed by "Invisibility Theory", the Sushitech released debut album from Christi Cons and Vlad Caia's Sideways Invisibility Theory project. This speedy follow-up for Half Baked Records (under the truncated SIT pseudonym) is rather good, too. Check first A-side "Spectral", a typically epic excursion where warm ambient chords, deep space electronics and glistening electric guitar motifs bob and weave around a chunky analogue bassline and locked-in tech-house drums. B-side opener "Owl Farm" is notably wonkier and weirder, with druggy drums, mind-altering electronics and the trademark glitch-laden shuffle we've come to expect from Romanian electronic music. That vibe is explored further on twisted closing cut "Animation", a particularly alien example of skewed tech-house funk.
Review: Congestion EP is Frak's killer collab with the unconventional Go! Finger music platform. The Swedish trio shows off athletic skills producing fresh modern techno bangers, on the heels of a three decade trajectory, filled with countless highly appreciated releases. Some kind of "glorious habit", captured this time by the catchy Madrid label on vinyl. Bizarre 4/4 analogue-treated techno madness at its best! A brilliant vinyl slice of yesterday and today's nastiest Scandinavian floor-destroyer-dance-punk weirdo science.
