Review: Imagination was both an obscure German jazz-rock band from Dusseldorf who recorded a series of rather good records in the late 1970s as well as being a fine UK electrofunk act. They amassed a fine catalogue of great hits that made an impact across 28 countries and earned them four platinum discs and nine gold discs amongst other accolades. No Music No Life has now remastered The Very Best Of Imagination which offers up their most well-known hits such as the irresistible 'Body Talk' and slow motion workout that is 'Flashback' amongst many more.

Review: Now here's an artist name that works on various clever levels. Not just a play on the experimental, boundary breaking electronic troupe of the 80s Art Of Noise but also the alias for Suburban Base's in-house designer who was responsible for countless artworks and album covers on the label throughout the 90s. As a musician he was less prolific but still knew exactly what buttons to press and when to press them with a handful of releases around 93-95 along with Mike 'E-Type' James. Now back together, they're exploring their old signature but with a contemporary twist. Review: Following a couple of impressive appearances on R.A.N.D. Muzik, Jay Gadian is back in action with this new drop for US label Space Dust. This is quintessential electro business dealing in icy, dystopian tones peppered with crafty sonic detailing. If 'Sensory' is something of a pensive opener, 'Green Dimension' soon shakes up the program with its hyphy leads and dirty, twisting bassline. 'East' is an airy affair which has a little more 80s flavour referencing back to the likes of Jonzun Crew, and '20 Or More' plays around with the rhythm for a more fractured framework around the darting shards of synths and sampling.

Review: Straight from that mythical realm of private press records comes Rick Mason & Rare Feelings, one of those half-hidden near misses that attain holy grail status with second hand prices to match. Sometimes the hype and rarity outweigh the music contained within, but that's absolutely not the case here as Mason leads his band into an especially cosmic, adventurous kind of funk which tips over into jazzy territory more than a little. The production has a raw charm to it, and that doesn't stop the record from lifting into the stratosphere on a swirl of jammed-out instrumentation that by rights should have landed Mason more fame than he seemingly received when he originally released the album in 1977.

Review: Mountain Records are a new funk label, pushing 45's cut with new funk tinged with a modern production sheen. For this one, label mainstay Double A, as usual, helms up the A-side with 'Are You Ready To Play The Game?' We find ourselves answering that we certainly are, as the tune immediately establishes unclear intent: its sample urges us to "play the game by the rules", but judging from all its sharp instrumental and breakbeat choppage, it certainly doesn't abide by its own rulebook! DJ Fleg, meanwhile, brings two classy tooly cuts to the B side, one of which features fellow producer Lean Rock.

Review: Since the early 90s, Ministry of Sound's yearly Annual compilations have done an excellent job in chronicling crossover dance hits, mainstream dancefloor killers, and popular underground workouts that make their way into the wider public consciousness. This year's edition (confusingly dated 2024, despite being released in late 2023) continues the successful franchise via two unmixed discs of radio-friendly dance favourites. It naturally ticks all of the usual boxes, contrasting breakout big room hits by underground heroes (Young Marco, Adelphi Music Factory, Ewan McVicar) and sizable tracks from established dance heavyweights (Chemical Brothers, Sub Focus and Dimensions, Rudimental, MK), with gigantic EDM works (Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding) and the odd out and out dance-pop hit (Kylie Minogue).

Review: Formerly known as Non-Human Persons, NNHMN (or Non-Human) are a duo from Berlin who sound every bit like stereotypes of synth-twiddling tag teams from the German capital. Which is no disrespect, more to celebrate how long the city has been known for embracing noises plucked straight from the future, and then combining those with mechanical hyper-emotion. Androids or not, on Deception Island Part 1 NNHMN show off deft skills at creating strangely sensual and sexual soundscapes from plugged-in things, offering up five stand out tunes that straddle club scenes and twisted romances, or obsessions, each perfectly poised to move bodies while also enveloping us in mysterious atmospheres thick enough to drown in. It's dark, (predominantly) driving, epic and alluring - the art of sinister seduction, to put all that another way.

Review: Those who enjoy the more intense, mind-mangling end of techno (particularly the trance-tinged, big room-ready European variants) should check out this three-disc mix-up on ZYX. Felix Reichwelt handles disc one, surging through tracks from the likes of Uncertain (the warehouse-ready excellence of 'Whack'), Thomas Schumacher (the acid-fired Jam & Spoon revivalism of 'Come Closer') and Spartaque (the fiendishly brutal 'Exhausted'), before SLT and Schwarze Puppen take over on disc two with a mix tailor made for massive venues with enormous soundsystems, minimal lighting, and thousands of wild ravers reaching for the strobes. NK4!D handles the third and final disc, offering a fine balance between riffs, melodies, intense acid lines and thunderous techno beats.

Review: If you didn't catch The Summer of Soul on the big screen then we're really, truly, very sorry indeed. The documentary was one of the most fascinating and evocative, not to mention poignant box office releases of the immediate post-pandemic lockdown period, and in our opinion is up there with the best non-fiction flicks we've ever seen.
Centring on the Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place over successive weekends in 1969, it tells the story of how this Black-run, and predominantly Black-billed event welcomed hundreds of thousands and hosted groundbreaking performances, but was quickly forgotten and lost in the shadows of the much more mythologised and predominantly white Woodstock, which took place at the same time. The long-overdue reappraisal is a musical feast, with great archive footage of numerous greats, and asks serious questions about who owns and decides on which narratives survive, while this album offers a fantastic overview of the sounds and names involved.
