Review: Rave Angst is an alias of German producer Alexander Potthof. He invites us deep into his soul here with a superb double pack of deeply atmospheric sonics that features food for the mind, body and soul. Plenty of these cuts will challenge you as a listener but then reward you in equal measure. They are deeply emotional even when rather apocalyptic sounding and there is plenty to love here for those who enjoy the sounds of Aphex Twin and early Plastikman as metallic rhythms suck you into Potthof's unique sound world.

Review: Netherlands-based 030303 Records is back with a fifth installment in its various artists series. As with the previous four editions, this is high-class electronic music pure and simple. Caramel Chameleon kicks off with a good time mix of cheery melodies and chattery drums, then Perseus Traxx brings his signature analogue murkiness to the lo-fi house trudge that is 'Something More Than This.' Elsewhere you will find quietly optimistic cuts like Raving Kid' restless 'Edgware Acid' or the dream house reveries of Kreggo's 'Hearthpulse' amongst many other varied treasures.

Review: Trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba return in full force with a stunning 11th studio album, Escape The Chaos. Lead member Ross Godfrey says of the record: "this whole record is a process of trying to reconnect with what really matters, whether it's what in your heart, or with the world, putting your feet on grass and feeling the earth beneath you" says Ross Godfrey. Skye Edwards adds: "In a way, it's a homage to the thirty years of being in Morcheeba, which is 60% of my existence." Since forming in London in 1995, they've sold over 10 million albums, from their platinum-selling Big Calm to collaborations with David Byrne and film work with Steven Soderbergh; now 30 years in, their presence within trip-hop is felt again, with forerunning single 'We Live And Die' providing buzzing hugs of electric bass and clear, haute beats, as Edwards muses on the counterbalancing ups and downs of life.

Review: A collection that blends classic soul, jazz, and rhythm & blues with a touch of British mod flair, this is the 11th album from the British veterans. From the outset, the album demonstrates the band's ability to capture emotion with the haunting saxophone and reflective vocals on 'How Many Times', which sets a powerful tone for what follows. The title track delivers an uplifting, seventies-inspired anthem, combining brass, hand percussion and heartfelt harmonies that evoke the essence of Isaac Hayes and Stevie Wonder. Tracks like 'Everything & All I Want' and 'Cut Me Loose' highlight the band's versatility, drawing influences from artists such as Paul Weller and Fela Kuti. The latter, featuring JP Bimeni's stunning vocals, delivers a funky, rhythm-driven groove. Meanwhile, 'Close To Where You Are' is a beautiful love dedication with its soulful brass arrangements and dreamy trumpet segments. The album also explores more introspective moments with 'Fix You Up', which exudes a relaxed, jazzy vibe, while 'The Beat I Know' offers a peaceful, bass-driven composition with serene vocals from Sheree DuBois and Carmy Love. Other tracks like 'When Worlds Collide' and 'Reach Out' deliver elegant slices of rhythm and blues. The band's ability to mix emotion with impeccable musicianship is on full display. The closing track, 'Summer Song,' featuring the legendary Omar, is a poignant tribute to overcoming life's challenges, closing the album on a deeply reflective note. The Revival of Survival is a stunning, soulful journey that will leave listeners eagerly demanding more.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) and their 2017 future classic The Punishment of Luxury, is an album that brilliantly merges biting social commentary with the band's signature synth-driven sound. Now available on blue vinyl, this release not only delivers sonically but also visually, with its vibrant cover art reflecting the album's thematic depth. From the opening title track, OMD sets the tone with an unapologetic critique of consumer culture, driven by Andy McCluskey's impassioned vocals and sharp lyrics. The band's ability to craft music that feels timeless yet relevant is on full display, blending modern production with the nostalgic essence of their '80s work. Tracks like 'What Have We Done' capture the disillusionment of the current era while offering a plea for a better future. Despite the absence of original drummer Malcolm Holmes, the album remains powerful, with Stuart Kershaw stepping in seamlessly and the deluxe edition's packaging, with its striking design and included lyrics booklet, further enhances the experience.

Review: Stone Foundation return with their 11th studio album, also marking their first in three years. Known for their collaborations with the likes of Omar, Laville, J.P. Bimeni, and above all their long-time collaborator Mick Talbot (The Style Council), this wonderwork hears this stylish high council of soul rejoice at their formative 25th anniversary, as they tour the world with the likes of Grace Jones and Paul Weller, their sights set firmly on the future. This new release promises a fresh evolution of their signature "small town soul" sound, which, despite the name, takes cosmopolitan flight into an atmospheric sound, in the stead of home.

Escape The Chaos
Review: Formed in 1995, Morcheeba - Skye Edwards and brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey - have spent nearly three decades darning their organic trip-hop to the wider global music fabric, with ear-catching success. The London trio are now raring to contrast their debut statements Fragments of Freedom (2000) and Charango (2002) with a stylistic evolution and a paean to human peace of mind. Escape The Chaos comes after many a solo project, film score, and lineup change, all of which have heard Morcheeba relocate themselves on the popular music map, with far-Eastern instrumental echoes and cinematic sublimes once again bridging divides between classic and contemporary trip hop.

Review: DJ Panthr is the "shadow self" (or, as we'd put it, alternative alias) of Hunter P Thompson, better known for his genre-bending ambient house and ambient techno releases as Akasha System. 100% Silk describes 'Jade District' as a 'technoid night ride inspired by the fern-shoruded neon streets' of South Tabor in his home city of Portland. It's an atmospheric and fairly accurate description all told, with Thompson combining his usual dreamy chords and colourful sonics with grooves and musical motifs more often associated with electro, acid, sci-fi techno, 'Artificial Intelligence' style IDM and hypnotic dub techno. What unites it all, aside from the colourful stylishness of the whole thing, is a pervasive sense of loved-up, wide-eyed tactility.

Review: Fresh from delivering a gorgeous and colourful album under his DJ Panthr alias, Hunter P Thompson returns to 100% Silk under his ambient and ambient techno-inspired alias, Akasha System. Dealing in waves of warming electronic colour, 90s ambient nostalgia, mid-80s 'new age' synth sounds, heady grooves and memorable melodies, the Portland-based producer delivers a set that's as sonically vivid as it is loved-up and unashamedly nostalgic. Standout moments are plentiful, with our picks including the delay-laden drums and delightfully drifting synth washes of 'Light Energy', the saucer-eyed Mr YT swell of 'Canopy Song', and the sunrise-ready wonder that is 'Life Cycle'.

Review: This record marks Sideshow's fifth full-length album in just four years and it comes at a time when his career is gaining significant momentum. Following notable collaborations with MIKE, The Alchemist and Boldy James as well as the release of two albums in 2023-2MM: Don't Just Stand There and Jam-Sideshow continues to build his reputation here with production from Popstar Benny, Alexander Spit, Sideshow himself and others. There are plenty of contemporary edges to this, as well as a subtle undercurrent of respect for the old school, and it is sure to take Sideshow to a whole other level once more.

Review: Paris Hilton's return to music is a vibrant exploration of her personal journey, packed with introspective lyrics and catchy beats. The album talks about her resilience, as she bravely shares her experiences, from her ADHD diagnosis to navigating the complexities of love and fame. Tracks like 'Chasin'' showcase her growth, offering a deeper, more heartfelt side that resonates with listeners. Her collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion on 'BBA' adds an exciting dynamic, with a contagious rhythm that stands out. The album's production shines, especially in the upbeat and polished pop tunes, while the gatefold baby pink vinyl adds a charming, collectible touch to the release. While the album may not push boundaries, it's clear that Hilton's evolution as an artist is genuine, as she successfully blends personal reflection with catchy, accessible pop. For fans of pop music with an authentic heart, definitely an enjoyable listen.

Review: Pinhead Gunpowder started out as a recording project only back in the 90s. Bt the band soon realised they had a fully formed sound that translated well, as evidenced by this 1997 album Goodbye Ellston Avenue. It's a record that takes cues from brands like The Big Cats and Green Day but with their own fresh influences. It originally came on Lookout Records and for this one has been recut at 45rpm on limited edition and coloured vinyl. This is the first part on a multi-phase and ongoing reissue project across 2022 so fans should keep their eyes peeled for more.

Review: Returning with their first new music in 16 years, Unt is the latest (comeback?) album from lesser-known true punk lifers Pinhead Gunpowder. Often perceived as the side-project of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, real ones will be quick to let you know that the first incarnation of the band back in the early 90s didn't even feature the songsmith, who would join during their second reformation, as they were never truly a band with a direct mission statement or cohesive through-line. In other words, they were about as punk as you can get in terms of ethos, camaraderie and disorganisation before even touching on the music. Having last performed live together at a benefit show at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California on February 12, 2010, while more than a full decade would pass until all of their previous albums were reissued on vinyl in 2021, all of these moving pieces (many of which took shape during the COVID lockdowns) have seemingly been in service of their true return with Unt. As Armstrong confessed in a recent interview - "We haven't really made any plans outside of making an album - except for some fantasies about maybe doing some touring", it appears the pinheads haven't lost one iota of lackadaisical uncertainty, while this half-hour of frenetic punk-popcore reassures they haven't missed a sonic (d)beat either.

Review: You've always been able to hear the West Coast in Monocoastal, but it's particularly present when you shut your eyes after 12 months of lockdown stopping you from visiting the region. Less active L.A., and more observing in Oregon, Fischer's career didn't end with this in 2011 and the multi-disciplinary artist has produced great things since, but the album is certainly one of turning points in terms of reputation and note.

The idea of slowly watching time unfold in un-rushed places is also highly appropriate. Among the washes of tape and the waves of refrain that make up this beautiful, meditative outing, you'll hear takes and half-harmonies from found instruments including a piano and xylophone. Overall, it feels like a place removed from linearity. A liminal masterpiece, if you are that way inclined.

Review: Corey Fuller and Tomoyoshi Date are the Illuha duo but for this new Tobira album they link with percussionist Tatsuhisa Yamamoto. He is a skilled drummer who has worked alone on Black Truffle but has also collaborated with Jim O'Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi, Keiji Haino, Phew and Oren Ambarchi among others. This new record focusses on electro-acoustic sounds that are run through with all manner of precise sonic details and are carried by Yamamoto's unique playing style and singular sense of groove which were recorded over two sessions. That playing style finds him playing very lightly with closely mic'ed drums so plenty of softness is captured and then interwoven with layers of Rhodes, piano, distant synths and metallic murmurations.

Review: 12k is very happy to welcome Uwe Zahn, aka Arovane, to the roster. Arovane, a well-respected artist in the field, hailing from within the German countryside, has been active since the early 2000s beginning with releases on City Centre Offices and DIN in the heyday of the IDM and microsound years. He has since gone on to release work with n5MD, Pure Magnetik, and Strangely Isolated Place, among others. With Reihen he takes his characteristic pointillist synthetic structures and impeccable sound design and lays them in a web of fagility, decay and etherealism that feels like new a new direction for Zahn.

Review: 12th Isle revisits the various artist compilation format with a new release that expands on their 2019 outing 'Inkosi' to deliver a club-focused mixtape across six tracks. Echo Party kicks things off with a dub-heavy extended mix that originally featured on Murray Collier & Hannan Jones's self-released CD-R. Italian newcomer Guizzi offers a thunderous downtempo track with tight conga percussion that meshes well with this label's musical MO and Der Opium Queen delivers a propulsive, video game OST-style dance hit that calls to mind Les Aeroplanes on Jamal Moss's Mathematics label. On Side B, a freak-folk skit by Memotone, motorik beats from Lo Kindre, and bleep-infused dub techno by Toronto-based Raf Reza all bang. .

Rooted in DIY principles, they thrived during a time when contemporary arts spaces embraced experimentalism without the constraints of funding or audience expectations. Their performances blended informality with spectacle and channelled the experimentalism of New York's 1960s downtown scene. Now regrouped, they offer up VL_Stay on 12th Isle featuring Baudoux, Ann Appermans and Ze?phyr Zijlstra.
