Tracks II: The Lost Albums
Cat: 194399 50151. Rel: 27 Jun 25

Rock
Review: Springsteen's place in music history is undeniable i a legendary figure whose songwriting has captured the heart, hope and heartbreak of American life for over five decades. With Tracks II: The Lost Albums, Springsteen opens the vault once again, offering fans an extraordinary glimpse into seven unreleased albums (80 tracks in total) spanning from the mid-70s to the 2000s. Rather than a simple outtakes collection, Tracks II feels like discovering entire new chapters of the Springsteen story. Across the compilation, you hear an artist constantly evolving i from the dusty romanticism of The Ties That Bind sessions to the raw urgency of the Born in the U.S.A. era demos. Songs like 'American Beauty' and 'Party Lights' showcase Springsteen's knack for creating melodies that feel instantly familiar yet deeply personal. The variety across the nine albums is striking. There are intimate acoustic sketches, full-throttle E Street Band anthems and brooding late-night confessionals. The production quality is strong throughout, preserving the raw spirit of the recordings while giving them a polished shine. Springsteen's voice i at turns weathered, fiery, tender i remains the heart of the collection. Lyrically, the themes of working-class dreams, lost love, redemption and perseverance remain constants, binding this sprawling set together. Tracks II isn't just for diehards; it's an example to Springsteen's restless creativity and enduring spirit. A gift to fans and a reminder of why his music remains timeless.

Review: A pivotal 2015 release from US rap giant Tyler The Creator reissued, a record that marked a sharp pivot from early shock tactics into more playful, genre-blurring territory. It's a maximalist blend of funk-rock, jazz, rap and r&b that veers deliberately between extremes i with tracks like 'Deathcamp' and 'Pilot' blasting out with distorted aggression, while 'Find Your Wings' and 'Fucking Young / Perfect' lean into soft textures and melodic optimism. 'Smuckers' brings heavyweight verses from Kanye West and Lil Wayne, all stitched together by thick synths and vintage soul drums, while Schoolboy Q trades bars with Tyler over video game bleeps on 'The Brown Stains Of Darkeese Latifah Part 6-12 (Remix)'. Elsewhere, '2Seater/Hair Blows' and 'Keep Da O's' show his growing confidence with harmony and arrangement, drawing as much from 70s soft rock as rap. It's a dense and restless listen, full of sudden detours, beat switch-ups and raw mixes, but that instability feels deliberate i a refusal to settle. As a body of work, it points clearly toward what would follow in later albums, but still stands on its own as a messy, colourful and often brilliant left turn.

Review: With the inductive Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame branding iron still hot, we're reminded of the pivotal pact described in The White Stripes' fifth album Get Behind Me Satan . Originally dropping in 2005, it was recorded in the stairwell of Jack White's Detroit home, and marked a sharp shift from their raw guitar-driven roots toward an increasingly eclectic sound. Piano, marimba, timpani and mandolin weave through 'Blue Orchid', 'My Doorbell' and 'The Denial Twist,' helping it snag the Grammy for Best Alternative Album and sell close to a million copies stateside. Critics at the time noted its bold departure into "Fifties exotica", a brave move that could've either made or broke chart promises. This record comes on striking red smoke and clear red/black discs, following the expanded Get Behind Me Satan XX edition with demos and alternate takes.

Review: Reissued now on blue eco-vinyl, Total Life Forever marked a sharp left turn for Foals when it landed in 2010. Swapping the frantic math-rock spikiness of Antidotes for a tone more expansive, the Oxford band leant into atmosphere, melody and melancholia, with 'Blue Blood' setting the tone - all restraint and slow build - and 'Black Gold' adding a widescreen, atolling drama. The LP was recorded in Gothenburg with producer Luke Smith (ex-Clor) and saw Foals consciously break away from the tight, jittery rhythms of their debut, Yannis Philippakis harder concaving the lyrical lens. This gave ultimate rise to 'Spanish Sahara', seven minutes of glacial synths, grief and catharsis, with popular consensus determining it their defining track.

Review: Rod Stewart's voice has always sounded like it's just crawled out of a Soho bar fight - gravelly, charming and faintly ridiculous. But somehow, it still gets you. This new compilation, spanning everything from his 70s bar-room soul to recent swing experiments, is a reminder of just how strange and compelling his career has been. Few singers could convincingly move from 'Maggie May' to 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' to 'Rhythm of My Heart' without seeming like a novelty act. Fewer still could make it all hang together with any sense of emotional truth. Born in London and once a failed footballer, Stewart turned rascal energy into stadium-filling charisma. The early material - with Python Lee Jackson, with the Faces, or solo - still feels beautifully tossed-off, full of unfiltered ache. Later tracks lean into gloss and schmaltz, sometimes to great effect and sometimes less so. But taken as a whole, this is a portrait of a singer who never quite gave up on the idea that pop music could be both daft and devastating. It's not cool, and it's not trying to be. That's the charm. If you're not moved by something here, you're either too young or trying far too hard.

Review: This new collection from New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen gathers 20 previously unreleased tracks, many taken from full albums that never saw the light of day i until now. Spanning 35 years of creative offshoots, false starts and private experiments, it's a rare insight into the quieter corners of one of America's most mythic songwriters. But this isn't just offcut archaeology; it's a powerful standalone listen. From the dusty pulse of the 'LA Garage Sessions '83' to the synthetic haze of the 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions', these recordings trace Springsteen's musical drift between lo-fi intimacy, widescreen rock and unexpected stylistic detours. 'Somewhere North of Nashville' aches with country soul, pedal steel drifting like cigarette smoke. 'Inyo' is a richly detailed border tale, while 'Twilight Hours' goes full orchestral noir i all shadows and moonlight. 'Perfect World' brings it back to E Street territory, complete with rousing guitars and that familiar sense of hope under pressure. There's a looseness here that feels newly revealing, and the warmth of Springsteen's personal introduction only adds to its charm. It's not a victory lap i more a letter from the vaults, full of missed chances and alternate realities. A real gift for fans.

Review: Goth ghastlies The Sisters Of Mercy mark the four-decadal existence of their debut album with a 4xLP box set, which doesn’t stop the flow, tracing its fallout alongside the full First And Last And Always album, followed by the band's three most formative EPs: 'Body And Soul’, 'Walk Away' and 'No Time To Cry’. The Leeds-born outfit, led by grisly guitarist Gary Marx and vorpal vocalist Andrew Eldritch (sadly not his real name), carved their dark post-punk path from 1980, reaching a wider audience with this 1985 release. This new pandora’s box helps capture the pivotal moment when their underground cult began to swell.

Review: Bruce Springsteen has been sitting on these recordings for yearsiwhole records, not sketchesisome finished, some forgotten. Now they finally surface, spanning 1983 to 2018, and offer a different kind of self-portrait: one less polished and more exploratory. The earliest material finds him navigating a path between the haunted quiet of 'Nebraska' and the radio gloss of 'Born in the USA'. Later sessions toy with drum loops, synth beds and orchestral swells. One batch plays like the soundtrack to a film that never existed; another leans into pedal steel and modest country sketches. There are borderland narratives, noir-ish ballads, E Street-style anthems. That New Jersey gritithat plainspoken clarity he's carried since the boardwalk daysiruns through even the softest tracks. He says he made this music to please himself and close friends, and you hear that freedom in its variety: some songs feel raw and just-found, others fully formed. There's no tidy arc, but that's part of its charm. Across seven discs and 82 songs, what emerges isn't a legacy project but something quieter: a window into how a working musician keeps working. You don't come away with answersionly a better sense of how far Springsteen will follow a song just to see where it leads.

Review: Over a decade into their genre-skirting journey, Manchester's GoGo Penguin return with Necessary Fictions, a soft and progressive post-punk musing on an unsettling anthropological concept. While still grounded in the interplay of Chris Illingworth's piano, Nick Blacka's bass and Jon Scott's drums, the record now brings modular synths, string players from the Manchester Collective, and - for the first time ever - a voice: Daudi Matsiko, who appears on 'Forgive The Damages', offers a quietly disarming presence in a band known for its instrumentals. 'Fallowfield Loops' offers a familiar taste, meanwhile, of the band's inceptive grooves, while its music video visually centres on the uni-nostalgic Toast Rack building in the heart of Manchester's student quarter.

Review: Dr. Feelgood's 1976 live set is a bulletproof document of their raucous peak. Captured across shows in Sheffield and Southend, Stupidity strips rock'n'roll back to its nerve endings: no frills, no flash-just Lee Brilleaux's feral bark and Wilko Johnson's razor-slash guitar. Their sound is lean, sweaty and impatient, particularly on standouts like 'She Does It Right', 'All Through The City' and a blistering take on Chuck Berry's 'Talking About You'. The mood is urgent, but never messy-Brilleaux controls the chaos like a bandleader possessed. Aided by engineer Vic Maile, the recording hits with barked authority, buzzing with pub sweat and amplifier hiss. Topping the UK chart on release, it marked a rare feat: a no-nonsense live album going straight to number one without a hit single. As a snapshot of Feelgood's primal power, it remains a punch in the ribs nearly fifty years on.

Review: The definitive greatest hits compilation by British new wave rulebook rippers Duran Duran, originally released in 1998. Spanning their career from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s, the record saw hailings and bowed prayer prostrations the world over for its sleek representation of the band's rise and suspension over 80s dance rock airspace for decades and more. 'Hungry Like The Wolf', 'Rio', 'Ordinary World', 'A View To A Kill' and 'Girls On Film' serve here as retrospective freeze-frames, together stop-motioning the band's trajectory through synthpop glamours and evolution into a maturer stadium act, as the revolutionary 90s crept onwards.

Review: The CD edition of a wider multi-format reissue, Greatest documents, well, the greatest greatest hits compilation to span the steadfast, enduring work of Brum new romantic hopefuls turned interstellar pop stars Duran Duran. Originally released in 1989, The Greatest is a choice career retrospective and update to the earlier 1989 compilation album Decade, where the new wave band's evolution over the elapsing of yet another decade solicited further tribute. Tracks like 'Notorious' flaunt their seamless move into funk-infused pop, while 'The Reflex' catches the polished, experimental edge of their mid-80s era. And of course, the Bond theme "A View To A Kill" remains to this day the only 007 theme to reach number one in the US.

Review: Genesis' 1974 release stands as a cornerstone of progressive rock, blending evocative storytelling with layered, intricate arrangements. Peter Gabriel's vocals on what would be his final album with the giants bring the narrative to life, shifting from the reflective tones of 'The Carpet Crawlers' to the defiant energy of 'Back in N.Y.C.'. The instrumentation is equally vividiTony Banks' keyboards set an atmospheric tone, while Phil Collins' dynamic drumming anchors the complex shifts in rhythm and mood. The interplay between Steve Hackett's guitar and Mike Rutherford's bass adds depth to the sprawling soundscapes, delivering a record that still resonates with its bold ambition and emotional scope.

Review: Antidepressants sees Suede writing during a stretch of unease and urban overstimulation, threading beta-blocked tension through nine new tracks recorded across studios in London, Belgium and Stockholm. Longtime producer Ed Buller returns behind the desk, working with the band in raw, live-tracked sessions, so raw in fact that Brett Anderson characterised the record as "music for a disconnected world": a bruised, jittery companion to 2022's Autofiction, though drawn this time from a colder, coiled place. This gatefold LP version comes alongside a multi-format set including CD, cassette, and a deluxe hessian-sleeved CD with bonus tracks, and a 'flip-top' box set with vinyl, zine and extras.

Review: Recorded mostly live with long-time collaborator Ed Buller, Suede's tenth full-length has been described as "broken music for broken people", pivoting from the volatile grit of Autofiction into a brooding post-punk mood channelling urban unease, digital detachment and twitchy self-reflection. Bassist Mat Osman calls it "a big stage record", with widescreen arrangements built for scale, inciting through such lead singles as 'Disintegrate' its listeners to "feel the rage". Alongside the release, Suede Takeover hits London in September, culminating in a full orchestral show with large-scale ensemble Paraorchestra; it's set to be an explosive excoriation of the present system.

Review: American saxophonist Joshua Redman returns with a new quartet featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo i a group formed during touring dates following his previous Blue Note debut. The eight new compositions were written during the pandemic and reflect a more subdued register, with pieces often built around modal phrasing and pared-back forms. 'A Message to Unsend' and 'So It Goes' open the set with slow, measured arrangements that favour tone over speed. 'Words Fall Short' and 'Borrowed Eyes' continue in that vein, trading solo space across saxophone and piano without crowding the frame. 'Icarus' introduces more movement and sharper shifts, while 'Over the Jelly-Green Sky' pushes into freer rhythmic interplay without abandoning the central theme. 'She Knows' and 'Era's End' close the set with a return to stillness, the final track pairing Redman with guest vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. Additional appearances from saxophonist Melissa Aldana and trumpeter Skylar Tang are folded in without disruption. It's a restrained but focused studio outing, shaped by clarity, not excess.

Review: Hard-Fi’s debut came together in cramped bedrooms, noisy corridors and a disused minicab office in Staines (later dubbed the Cherry Lips Studio) all on a shoestring and with no producer polish. That raw setup fed directly into the album’s scrappy charm: Stars Of CCTV landed in 2005 with twitchy guitars, dubby basslines and a chip on its shoulder, digging up small-town drudgeries with pop instincts kept intact, despite the grudge. ‘Hard To Beat’, ‘Cash Machine’ and ‘Living For The Weekend’ proved unexpected hits, helping the album crawl to number one in the UK nearly six months after its release. Rough edges weren’t smoothed out: planes flying overhead and footfall in the halls still bleed into the mix.

Review: London-based producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson) teams up with Melbourne pianist Finn Rees for two collaborative pieces recorded in a short session at SFJ Studios. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were laid down over consecutive days using analogue equipment, including mellotron, Wurlitzer and ribbon mics and mixed through a 70s Studer desk. The result is a measured blend of jazz-inflected composition and cinematic texture, leaning into the soft-focus feel of Italian film scores and 70s library music. 'Love In Memory' is the more stripped-back of the two, built around glissando keys and lightly arranged strings while 'Bluebell' adds bass from Matthew Hayes and develops in longer arcs, with warmer low-end and more defined structure. Both tracks avoid excess, favouring tone and pacing over virtuosity. String parts from Clementine Brown further the record's focus on texture rather than drama. The collaboration doesn't aim to be definitive but lands confidently as a quiet, well-formed experiment between two artists working with a shared vocabulary.

Review: Genesis' double concept album from 1974 is a seraphic work, telling the surreal, mythic story of Rael, a Puerto Rican youth navigating a dreamlike New York City filled with bizarre characters and symbolism. Also Peter Gabriel's last album with Genesis, it marks the moment that the 'Solsbury Hill' singer left to pursue a solo career, thus curtailing the era of "progressive Genesis". Hailed as one of the most influential prog rock albums of all time, it exalts Genesis as early users of ambient, synth-driven moodscapes, which serve as transcendent backdrops for Rael's "ashy to classy" bildungsroman. As a Puerto Rican street kid embarks on an odyssey of personage, the album reaches a staunch climax in an archetypal castration scene. Also doubling as a live show in which Peter Gabriel donned grotesque costumes and leathery hides to represent Rael - not quite Broadway, but close - this new set comes complete with a 1975 tour programme reproduction, replica ticket, poster and a 60-page coffee table style book featuring rare images and new liner notes by Alexis Petridis.

Review: Mormaco Queima is the electrifying debut album from Ana Frango Electrico and marks the point where their genre-distorting journey began in the humble tenements of Rio de Janeiro. First out digitally in 2018, it radiates raw charm, fusing MPB, Tropicalia, and indie with a punk sass and lo-fi swagger. Oxbowing playfully between structure and chaos, opener 'Farelos' teeters on the edge of form through trombone and percussion, while 'No Bico Do Mamilo' shifts restlessly in tempo, barely preparing us for twin tunes 'Roxo' and 'Picles', which swing like macaques from punk bursts to psychedelic grooves. Again reissued globally by Mr Bongo, Quiema's vital first contribution to the next genesis of Brazilian avant-garde music was and still is a sound to behold.

Review: Originally released in 2005, Hard-Fi's Stars of CCTV album is now reissued to make its 20th anniversary and remind us why it became a defining album of mid-2000s British indie rock. Part of that is the way it blends gritty urban realism with anthemic hooks and genre-blurring influences from rock, punk and beyond. Tracks like 'Hard to Beat,' the era-defining ode to hedonism 'Living for the Weekend' and the title track still pack punch and reflect the working-class angst and nightlife highs of a generation. Remastered and sounding sharper than ever, Stars of CCTV was a raw, energetic debut that captured the spirit of suburban rebellion.

Review: A four sided selection of remixes of the goth kingpins' widely acclaimed and long awaited latest album Songs of a Lost World. From the moment Paul Oakenfold's 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' rework opens proceedings i lush strings, half-submerged vocals, and a cinematic pace i it's clear that curation, not just contribution, has shaped the form. Orbital turn 'Endsong' into a glistening spiral of sequencers and tension, while Sally C's raw house take on 'A Fragile Thing' ups the pulse without disturbing the gloom. Smith i still unmistakably the same outsider from Crawley, West Sussex i guides things with restraint, letting the space speak louder than the noise. Four Tet's version of 'Alone' closes the first disc like a forgotten lullaby, cracked and glinting. You don't get every remix i the more textural, post-rock turns are gone i but you do get a sharp cross-section that keeps faith with both atmosphere and momentum. It's the kind of record that feels designed for the night: not to lift it, exactly, but to sink into it willingly, track by track.

Review: More than four decades after he first appeared in smudged eyeliner and a mop of jet-black hair, Robert Smith is still finding new ways to pull his music apart and stitch it back together. This new remix collection i assembled and curated by Smith himself i feels less like a victory lap and more like a restless dissection of a legacy he's still actively shaping. The collaborators here are hardly incidental: Four Tet, Orbital, Ame, Chino Moreno, Mura Masa, Trentemoller, Mogwai. It reads like a list built by someone still hungrily tuned into the present, not stuck in the past. And true to form, the results are all over the place i a feature, not a flaw. Some tracks lean into grandeur: Paul Oakenfold's take on 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' opens with all the sweeping melodrama you'd expect, while Daybreakers stretch 'WarSong' into widescreen synthwork. Elsewhere, Shanti Celeste and Ex-Easter Island Head bring a strange intimacy to 'Alone', teasing out its ache with a different kind of spaciousness. At times, you wonder if Smith enjoys seeing how far his work can be bent before it breaks. But it never does i even filtered through others' hands, his sense of tension, drama and deep emotional unease holds everything together.

Review: This expanded vinyl edition of mixes of The Cure's latest LP plays like a love letter to distortion, atmosphere and the spaces in between. Robert Smith i the Crawley-born architect of dream-pop dread i doesn't just sign off on the remixes; he threads them into something tactile and deeply referential. On wax, everything breathes more. Craven Faults' rework of 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' stretches across the grooves like a slow fog; you can almost hear the reverb decay. Trentemoller's version of 'And Nothing Is Forever' pulses with distant thunder, while Ex-Easter Island Head bring a kind of percussive drone minimalism that feels at once ancient and alien. The inclusion of post-rock outliers like Mogwai and 65daysofstatic leans into the format's cinematic sprawl i these are not just remixes but alternate timelines. Smith curates the artwork, adds handwritten notes, sketches, fragments of ephemera i each fold and crease of the tri-gatefold sleeve feels intentional. Even the sequencing feels weighted: Four Tet and Anja Schneider on one end, Twilight Sad and Moreno on the other. This isn't just a deluxe package i it's a monument. A showcase of how far The Cure's music can stretch, bend and re-form without losing that original ache.

Review: Los Angeles artist Billie Eilish returns with ten tracks co-written and produced with her brother FINNEAS, continuing their minimal, mood-driven approach but more compositionally fluid than before, often moving through multiple sections within a single track. 'Skinny' and 'Lunch' open the set with contrasting moods i one sparse and acoustic, the other punchier, built on layered vocal production and processed drums. 'Chihiro' stretches into loose, downtempo territory, its structure veering off-centre halfway through. Mid-album, 'Birds of a Feather' and 'Wildflower' settle into more melodic forms, carried by close-mic'd vocals and understated arrangements. 'The Greatest' and 'L'Amour De Ma Vie' are the most extended pieces here, moving from ballad to distortion-heavy breaks and fractured transitions. Toward the end, 'The Diner' and 'Bittersuite' continue that elliptical structure, leaning into abrupt shifts and tonal ambiguity. Closer 'Blue' pulls together fragments from earlier tracks, reinforcing the album's looped, circular logic. It's not a reinvention but a textural and structural refinement, delivered with precision and control.

Review: US rapper Playboi Carti goes full rap game meta-modernity on I Am Music, perhaps trumping even Kanye West in utter God complexity via his own trodden path of effulgent emo rap heavenliness. An aggrandised four sides of black wax are contained in this hefty double sleeve replete with kingly block serif lettering, whilst the limits of such everlasting rap paradoxes as peak-career megalomania, contrasted to a core of vulnerability, are explored with glee. "Cutthroat angelics" are the production motif - they're laid down by future sonic denizens Pi'erre Bourne, Lancey Foux and Tony Seltzer - as slimy slurs of pitch corrected voice abound in a soup of strange, seraphic trap slippage.

Ironically, the new 15-track rock-leaning album from Haim, produced by Danielle Haim and Rostam Batmanglij, hardly hears so much a scrap of towel thrown in. It follows a reconvening by the trio in early 2023, and a nudging hint via social media at an upcoming Jai Paul collab. Alana Haim described this record as "the closest (they) have ever gotten to how (they) wanted to sound," marking a notable shift from their previous work. Paul Thomas Anderson returns to shoot the album cover, continuing his creative partnership with the band after Alana starred in his most seventies teen drama Licorice Pizza.

Review: Robert Smith has always treated remixing less like revision, more like ritual i a habit that's followed him since his days in Crawley, West Sussex and then surfacing officially on the first Cure remix album, 1990's Mixed Up. This triple-disc release of reworkings from the band's latest LP Songs of a Lost World feels assembled with obsessive care, mapping out every possible mood lurking beneath the surface. There are club-ready flips, yes i Sally C, Danny Briottet and Gregor Tresher all push the rhythm forward i but they sit beside glacial pieces that feel more like haunted sketches than reworks. Mura Masa's take on 'All I Ever Am' is disintegrated almost beyond recognition, its vocal a flickering memory. Mogwai's 'Endsong' feels like the end of the world in slow motion. Even Chino Moreno turns in something striking i 'WarSong' morphs into a sludgy howl with heat-warped edges. But it's the sequencing that surprises: these aren't bolted together, but grouped in arcs, as though Smith were arranging the bones of an old idea into something still alive. Four Tet's version of 'Alone' is a high point i deeply textured but featherlight. Like all The Cure's output, what really matters is the feeling of being drawn somewhere, and Smith's hand never letting go.

Review: The latest release from South London's Loyle Carner pivots inward, offering a tender meditation on fatherhood, early memory and generational reflection. It's a natural progression from his previous introspections, but here the production is leaner and more luminous-stripped-back soul, minimal beats and a focus on clarity over complexity. Carner's delivery is quieter, but the intent feels firmer: gone is the youthful restlessness, replaced by something close to peace. As ever, there are references to family, race, and identity, but they're less rhetorical and more lived-in. With subtle collaborations and an intuitive feel for rhythm and space, Carner sketches an emotional landscape that's quietly disarming. This is one of his most human releases yet-not showy or maximal, but rich in detail and calm in its confidence. A welcome shift from a UK rapper increasingly more concerned with truth than trend.

Review: New-gen pop goddess Chappell Roan revels new and acquired popular tastes in country music with a new fiddle-laced foray, 'The Giver', a track having been first unveiled during her SNL debut in late 2024. The track playfully riffs on Nashville tropes while delivering candid lesbian storytelling, a contrast shaped by Roan's closeted upbringing in Missouri. Rather than baiting genre purists, she frames it as reclaiming a space that was once off-limits. Its campy lyric video sees Roan in full drag mode, cycling through fantasy professions with hotline energy. Billboard teasers and a live rollout helped frame the single as the next step in a new phase after The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess.

Review: The Black Keys return with their 13th studio album, marking an interesting new chapter in the band's already storied career. Known for their raw, garage-blues sound, the Ohio duo have consistently evolved, pushing their musical boundaries across genres. Here, they've teamed up with iconic songwriters Rick Nowels and Daniel Tashian, as well as legendary keyboardist Scott Storch, resulting in perhaps their most adventurous album to date. Tracks like the hit single 'The Night Before' alongside title cut 'No Rain, No Flowers' and 'Babygirl' showcase a more expansive sonic palette. While their earlier work was often defined by gritty riffs and stripped-back blues, this new offering incorporates lush production and intricate arrangements, reflecting a commendable willingness to experiment. The piece blends these eclectic influences rather well, proving that even after over a decade of success, The Black Keys are still driven to innovate and push sonic boundaries.

Review: The third solo album by urbanely soulful Sheffield crooner Richard Hawley marked a major breakthrough for the artist, earning him a Mercury Prize nomination. Yet despite pedaling a different, more garage rock style at the time, Alex Turner's respect for Hawley goes way back: when the Monkeys pipped Hawley to the post and won, Turner exclaimed, "Someone call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed!" As for other comparisons, Hawley's similarity to Mark Lanegan's husk is hard to ignore, especially when he lets rip. However, when he delivers softer timbres, like on the serene 'Coles Corner', he evokes Frank Sinatra's decadent tones and the majesty of the string sections are an ornate joy, complementing it perfectly. Turner had a point in his acceptance speech... this is prize-winning stuff and finally getting a thorough reappraisal because of the re-release with half-speed remaster.

Review: British songwriting institution Paul Weller revisits a set of longstanding favourites and lesser-known selections across 15 reinterpretations that blur the line between cover version and personal inventory. Produced by Steve Cradock, the record mixes stripped-down arrangements with occasional flourishes from a guest list including Robert Plant, Seckou Keita and Amelia Coburn. 'Handouts in the Rain' and 'Small Town Talk' open side one with soft restraint, setting a tone that leans more reflective than revisionist. 'El Dorado' and 'White Line Fever' follow with a cleaner, more acoustic palette, while 'One Last Cold Kiss' and 'When You Are a King' stay faithful in structure but add texture through careful instrumentation. 'Pinball' and 'Where There's Smoke, There's Fire' close the first half with a slightly sharper edge. Side three starts with 'I Started a Joke', reworked with minimal accompaniment. 'Never the Same' and 'Lawdy Rolla' stretch further into blues and folk territory, while 'Nobody's Fool' pulls things back to softer tones. The final three tracks i 'Journey', 'Daltry Street' and 'Clive's Song' i are quieter, more impressionistic sketches, closing the set with understated clarity. Nothing here tries too hard. It's measured, unforced, and sequenced with care.

Review: Paul Weller returns this July with Find El Dorado, a studio LP of covers with a reflective twist applied. Refusing to play it straight as ever, the guitarist and principal Jam songwriter dives into songs that he's now happy to reveal have haunted him for years, revisiting them with quiet clarity and a reverent touch. Produced by longtime collaborator Steve Cradock, the record nets in a wide cast (Declan O'Rourke, Noel Gallagher, Amelia Coburn, Seckou Keita, Robert Plant), enlisting his very many sidereal friends to help reshape such classic blues, ragtime and rock & roll cuts as The Flying Burrito Brothers' 'White Line Fever' and Christy Moore's one-cover-removed version of Mountain's 'One Last Cold Kiss'.

Review: This special edition pressing is a work of art as the pattern is really eye-catching. The stamp on the label is a stylish touch, too. As for the music, this is an anniversary edition of the Damon Albarn-led group's earliest available commercial release and one of their very best. The noir feel of the title track, thanks to its unforgettable melodies and atmospheric, Morricone-esque flourish, is one of the greatest indie singles of the century so far. And '12D3' is one of Gorillaz' most underrated, full of deep meaning and clues into Gorillaz mythology.

Review: The Black Keys return this August with No Rain, No Flowers, recorded in Nashville and co-produced by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney at Easy Eye Sound. Following 2024's Ohio Players, the new full-length moves yonder from jammy grooves and leans into more focused songcraft, thanks in part to collaborators Rick Nowels, Daniel Tashian and Scott Storch. It's the first time the duo have written so closely with piano-driven writer, a shift Auerbach says "clicked immediately"; Lyrically, the record is shot through with varying shades of romantic entanglement, from tender and pure to gone-awry; early singles 'Babygirl', 'The Night Before' and the newly dropped title track trace the arc.

Review: Now reissued, the 1993 debut from this Weatherall-helmed outfit remains a vital artifact of early 90s UK electronic music. A distinct fusion of ambient techno, dub and melodic minimalism that helped define the era's genre-blurring sound, tracks like 'Smokebelch II' have a haunting beauty with sweeping pads and hypnotic grooves, embodying a deeply atmospheric and spacey aesthetic that nods to Berlin School influences while anchoring itself firmly in post-rave Britain. There's an elegance in its restraint, with Weatherall and company favouring mood and repetition over dramatic builds. The dubby undercurrents and minimal progressions have a depth that rewards patience. Sabresonic stands as a cohesive and influential record of UK electronic music in 1993. It reflects a moment when electronic music was still wide open and exploratory, paving the way for the deeper strains of ambient techno and downtempo to come.

Review: Mittoo? Me too! Jackie Mittoo's Reggae Magic (Soul Jazz) assembles essential lathings and rare grooves from 1967 to 1974, a period when his keyboard work shaped reggae's core sound. After leaving seminal Jamaican ska outfit The Skatalites, Mittoo was de facto CCO at Studio One, driving its signature organ-led style that mounted Kingston's rhythms to earlier, more readily identifiable grooves from the popular sphere, such as the post-bossa flurries of Booker T And The MGs and the knee-slapping soul movements of Stax. The tunes you hear here - 'Hot Milk', 'One Step Beyond' and 'Real Rock' - were reused as riddims over a span of decades, reaching artists from Alton Ellis to The Clash, Lily Allen to Rihanna. Further rarities like 'Ghetto Organ' and 'Soul Stew' also appear, presenting a snapshot of Mittoo's can't-go-back impact on Jamaican music.

Review: Veteran northern duo Autechre, long associated with the most fractured corners of electronic music, offer something unexpectedly generous and inviting here. It's a new release that feels looser, more exploratory i less about total deconstruction and more about spontaneous sketching. Tracks are shorter, often playful, but never throwaway. 'Altibzz' and 'Rale' shimmer with impressionistic calm, while the stuttering mechanics of 'The Plc' and 'Tankakern' reveal a groove-minded touch that leans into early hip-hop and electro without ever mimicking it. There's real warmth to the sequencing too. Ideas emerge, recede and reappear with fluidity, allowing moments like 'Paralel Suns' or 'Notwo' to hit with emotional weight on repeat listens. For a group known for density and abstraction, this feels unusually personal. The production is still meticulous, of course: fine-grained details in the percussion, depth in the spatial design, layers that unfold slowly over time. Autechre haven't gone soft i they've just made space. And in doing so, they've created something genuinely moving. It's a joy to hear two artists so synonymous with machine complexity turn towards something more human, more intuitive and arguably more lasting.

Review: Long having broken from his breakout mathematically represented spurt of LP titles (+, -, x, # and a fifth, =), folk superstar Ed Sheeran now offers the world Play, breaking into media control symbology: perhaps the new record will be stylised as ? in due course. Made after spates of travel to Goa, India, the album reflects yet a renewed, internationally informed spark by the ginger folk-pop great: lead single 'Azizam' incorporates Persian musical elements - the LP centrepiece, "azizam" translates from Persian as "my beloved", drawing on Sheeran's relationship with his wife Cherry and collaborative streak shared with Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzadeh - while 'Old Phone' offers a nostalgic look back on his early career. Later songs like 'Sapphire' and 'Symmetry' go on to exemplify Sheeran's newfound passion for expressing and channeling the heritages of his closest beloveds and associates.

Review: New York's Rachika Nayar and Philadelphia's Nina Keith join forces on a striking collaboration that blurs neo-classical precision with post-rock vulnerability and glitched-out dream pop. Across ten tracks, the pair drift through a liminal zone of memory and reinvention - where tactile textures and diaristic flourishes brush against more abstract emotional spells. 'Give-upping', with Julianna Barwick, sets the tone: slow, swollen, and gently disintegrating. 'Blue Rags, Raging Wind' and 'Serpentine' echo the drama of Nayar's Heaven Come Crashing, while 'No More to See' and 'It's Change' bend indie-folk vocals into digital forms, aided by Katie Dey, June McDoom and Willy Siegel. Elsewhere, tracks like 'whole30 Fight Club' and 'Disiniblud' play with rhythm and fragmentation in more unstable ways - not so much deconstructed as quietly mutating. The album's most moving moment, 'My flickering gift to you', with Tujiko Noriko, offers a kind of closure without resolution. The result is a shared soundworld that feels emotionally precise yet formally fluid: vulnerable, glitched and alive with luminous detail.

Review: The seminal Sabresonic from UK trio Sabres of Paradise gets a tight remaster and re-issue here, and what a magnificent snapshot of the halcyon days of UK raving it is. Considering the personnel behind the project (Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner, and Gary Burns), it's of little surprise that the music has lost none of its cutting edge - still sounding as fresh and pointed as it did upon first release in 1994. Known for their unique blend of electronic, dub, and rock influences, the band carved out a space that felt both experimental and accessible, and it would be hard to overstate their lasting influence on modern electronic music. Sabresonic stretches from hypnotic grooves to raw, industrial textures, with moments of beauty scattered throughout. 'Wilmot' is a standout, with driving percussion and atmospheric layers, while 'Spiritual High' offers a more expansive, drifting vibe. But it's 'Smokebelch II (Beatless mix)' that's likely to bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardened dancefloor veteran, with its bittersweet lead melody and celestial harmonics combining to create a timeless piece of ambient bliss. They don't make 'em like they used to, kid.

Review: Wet Leg is the Grammy-winning Isle of Wight band founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, whose 'Chaise Longue' single swept the world before it, followed by a hugely successful debut album in 2022. Here they make a bold return with their second album, Moisturizer, reflecting a tighter, more confident sound honed and shaped by practically non-stop touring. "We were just kind of having fun and exploring," Chambers has said of the process while Teasdale explains, "We focussed on: Is this going to be fun to play live?" Written during an intense creative burst in a remote countryside house, Moisturizer explores themes of obsession and consuming love with raw and visceral guitars, pounding drums and plenty of the outfit's trademark edgy wit.

The album was created in rural Herefordshire after the unexpected success of Tubular Bells and so captures Oldfield's retreat into nature and introspection. It was composed when he was just 21 and blends lush, pastoral soundscapes into two immersive suites that reflect a young artist balancing musical ambition with a desire for solitude.

Review: For our landmark 400th release! Two of the most prolific remixers in the world of Disco, Dave Lee and John Morales have teamed up for one of their biggest projects to date - 'Mixed To The Maxxx' After gaining access from the legendary original artists these two highly esteemed producers take the multi-track tapes of many classic Disco, Funk & Soul tracks and re-work them...to the Maxxx! Here we are treated to a double 12" sampler of what is to come from the Album later this year.
First up, the Bass twanging floor filler version from Dave Lee of 'The Brothers Johnson - The Real Thing', which has already been causing a stir in his DJ sets of late, featuring lots of musical parts not audible in the original. Following up is Dave's Friday Night Fever Mix of Philly legends 'Bell & James - US chart hit "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)' where he beefs up and extends the original to re-step back out on the town, a masterclass in elevating something that is already great to start with.
On the second 12", we have John Morales taking on a biggie! Inner Life's - Aint No Mountain High Enough. Here, John handles the prestigious parts with the respect due, re-shaping key moments in a new light and bringing the sonics up to par for modern dancefloors, an Anthem Mix indeed. To finish proceedings, Morales takes on British Jazz-Funk band 'Light Of The World' with their mum loved classic 'London Town', bumping the tempo a touch and beefing up the funk.
