Notes: Compact Analogue LFO & VCO

The 'Pip LFO' is a compact 4HP all analogue low frequency oscillator with a wide frequency range, voltage control, numerous outputs, reset input and a VCO mode.

LFO speed is set via a manual control and voltage control input. There is a unipolar square wave output along with both bipolar and uni-polar triangle, saw and sine waveform outputs.

When VCO mode is activated, the frequency jumps to audio range and will track V/Oct for approx 5 octaves. A reset input allows the LFO waveform cycle to be reset and produces hard sync functionality in VCO mode.

Notes: Germaniac is a discrete VCA/warmer module build around with the sound characteristic of the vintage Russian germanium transistors.

Warm things up:

That fat Analog Character: It's not question here be in the area of the "most transparent VCA ». We specifically select our transistors to add harmonics and give a rich and thick saturation.

Variable Texture Control: Choose the amount of distortion with the "Warmth" knob, providing from a very soft and subtle one to a heavily pronounced distortion. you can also CV control this warmth variation to play with.

Notes: Module A-145 is a low frequency oscillator, which produces cyclical control voltages in a very wide range of frequencies.

Five waveforms are available: sawtooth, inverted sawtooth, triangle, sine and square wave. The LFO can be used as a modulation source for any number of modules - for instance modulating the pulse width or frequency of a VCO, modulation of the cut-off frequency of a VCF, or amplitude modulation with a VCA.

A three-way switch lets you select three frequency ranges, spanning from one cycle every several minutes at the lowest, to moderate audio frequency at the highest (about 4-5 kHz).

The LFO signal can also be synchronised, via the reset input.

Identical to the A-145-1, but only 4 HP wide and with additional LEDs for the square wave and the sawtooth signal.

Notes: Mutes goes above and beyond basic muting by allowing you to split groups of signals to multiple destinations, making it great for FX dub performing and varied signal routing.

Vactrols on the circuit gives to the switching a pleasing decay for both audio and modulation as well a totally click free muting.

Notes: The Bohm:Groove adds a secondary kick voice, that can be triggered via clock divisions, allowing the user to build more complex grooves around the main kick. Craft dynamic percussive textures with ease. Sync a secondary kick to clock divisions and fine-tune every tap's level, pitch, and FX using intuitive controls.

Notes: Rack power bringing 1.25A (1250mA) on both the +12V and -12V rails. There is a 5V rail, but it pulls from the +12V rail, up to 750mA. So only use the +5V rail if you have to.

'Beast's Chalkboard' is dual channel stepped voltage source and adder for your eurorack modular synthesizer system. It primarily is intended as a dual octave switcher for VCO's but has many other uses including sequence transposition, FM ratio creation, buffered CV distribution and VCO calibration.

Notes: The new ADDAC320 Servo Control is a nod to Neil Young's Whizzer, a device that was ahead of its time. This tool enabled control over amplifier pots through the use of pedals, resulting in far-reaching tonal variation. Inspired by this methodology, ADDAC's Servo Control incorporates a Servo motor into a 4 HP Eurorack module, enabling it to control any knob that doesn't have a CV input, or other gear such as guitar pedals - within certain distance constraints.

A servo is a specific type of motor that can be digitally controlled to work at precise angles. On the ADDAC320, it is controlled by a microcontroller which is able to receive an incoming CV voltage from 0 to +5v and linearly converts this voltage range to the 270 degree Servo motor range. Using a spring wire and metal couplers, the motor shaft is then attached to the target knob to be controlled, which will turn as the Servo turns.?Two other knobs, Maximum Angle and Minimum Angle, allow further control of the "sweet spot" of the target knob, establishing a smaller Servo range.

Notes: Crossover: enabling new processing possibilities: Commonly, audio crossovers are designed to split an audio signal into several frequency ranges so that each resulting signal is adequate for the speaker drivers they are connected to. Typically, low range is sent to the big woofers, mid range to smaller woofers and high range to the tweeters.

Introducing the ADDAC607, which enables users to split the signal into different bands. This creates many interesting processing possibilities. For example, by independently processing specific frequency ranges, one can add delay on only the high frequency range. Or, users split a signal to feed three different compressors for multi-band compression. Finally, DJs can use the Gain knob as a 'kill switch' to remove an entire frequency band, if desired.

Although ADDAC607 operates in Mono (for Stereo signals two modules can be used) there are two audio inputs, making it easy to achieve stereo to mono summing. The Mono Sum Out carries this summed signal. This is pre-gain and can also be used as a buffered Thru output.

The ADDAC607 is a great companion to the ADDAC220 Dual Envelope Follower+, since it allows extraction of dynamics from any signal in a focused frequency range. This allows it to separate the frequencies of a kick drum and a snare, for instance.

Module A-192-2 contains two independent CV/Gate-to-Midi/USB interfaces. For each of the two sub-units these inputs are available:

- Gate Input (min. +5V)
- CVN Input (defines the Midi note number), 1V/octave standard, range 0...+10V (i.e. 10 octaves)
- CVV Input (defines the velocity value assigned to the Midi note message), can be used alternatively for Midi volume (CC#7), range 0...+5V
- CVC Input (free assignable to any Midi control change number), range 0...+5V

For both sub-units a common CV Transpose input is available (1V/octave, range 0...+10V). The voltage applied to this input is added internally to CVN before the Midi note number is generated. It can be used e.g. to transpose two sequences simultaneously by one voltage.

How it works:

Whenever the rising edge of the Gate input is recognized a Midi note on message is generated. The note number corresponds to the sum of the voltages applied to the CVN input and the common CV Transpose Input that is present at the rising edge of the gate signal.

Notes: Arad is an expander for the Oradea quadruple resonator. It adds three additional features. Arad features direct audio inputs for individual channels, so you can use each channel for a different audio source (the individual channel outputs are already incorporated into the main module). There are buttons and gate inputs for manual and/or remote clickless muting and unmuting of the channels. Another group of four buttons acts in parallel to the EXCITE inputs of Oradea, allowing for manual triggering.

Notes: You can never have too many voltage controlled amplifiers VCAs! (voltage controlled amplifiers). Ampera offers 4x VCAs in a tiny 6HP footprint with manual potentiometer control mixed with CV control.

Amplification ranges between 0.1x-2x, so you can make your 5V signals 10V with an offset voltage. Chain 2 channels together, and you have boost.
Ampera has bi-polar LEDs that display red or blue depending on the polarity of the signal. At audio rates, the LEDs show purple.

An excellent solution for those with small systems, or those just looking to free-up some space in their Eurorack cases.

Important note: Ampera works both for CV and audio. However, if audio is passed though, it will always be slightly audible, as the VCA circuit has some leakage (cannot completely mute). Two channels can be used in series to mitigate this if necessary.

Notes: The M module is a 5-way Polytip signal multiplier. It takes a single polyphonic audio, CV, or gate signal set and routes it to up to five multiple outputs. Notes: The SetonixSynth/Tidbit Audio Psychedelic Voltage Processor, or PVP, is a four-channel chaos module. It uses colour-changing LEDs to produce fluctuating voltages in response to the Channel input, with each channel normalized in series to create increasingly chaotic "taps" that can be used one after another for different variations.

Any positive voltage input such as unipolar LFOs, envelopes, stepped voltages, or simply the onboard normalized voltage patched to a channel input is reproduced approximately on each channel output, with the PVP inducing unpredictable fluctuations due to the variable current consumed by an LED circuit with a mind of its own.

Notes: Module A-188-9 is a so-called high speed VCO that tracks perfectly to the 1V/oct scale in the frequency range of about 15kHz ... 500 kHz. The main application is the exact drive of BBD modules (A-188-1/2) to generate sounds realized by means of the so-called Karplus-Strong synthesis. But even in cooperation with other modules featuring high speed inputs (e.g. digital noise, delay, frequency divider) the A-188-9 makes sense. In principle the module is made of a precision audio VCO followed by a PLL (phase locked loop) unit that multiplies the frequency of the audio VCO by 32. Thus the module can be used also as an audio VCO as it features the standard waveforms sawtooth, triangle and rectangle with adjustable pulse width.

Technical Note regarding the Slew parameter:

Besides the audio VCO the module contains a so-called PLL circuit (Phase Locked Loop) and a 1:32 frequency divider. A slew limiter is part of the PLL. It defines how fast the frequency of the PLL follows the frequency of the VCO. The PLL cannot follow the VCO without any delay. Rather one has to find a compromise between the residual ripple of the PLL frequency and the frequency follow rate. That is the job of the slew limiter (works in principle like a glide or portamento unit). For this the module is equipped with a 3-position switch that is used to switch the slew time in 3 ranges. When mostly higher frequencies are used ((~ 100kHz ... 500 kHz) a short slew time can be chosen. When also lower frequencies are required (< 100kHz) a longer slew time may be used to reduce the residual frequency ripple. More details about the working principle of a PLL can be found in the information about module A-196. Module A-188-9 is in principle an A-196 combined with an audio VCO and a 1:32 frequency divider.

With clock sync, your stops and starts stay perfectly in time, and a toggle lets you switch between momentary and latching Trig modes. Add a touch of tape magic to your modular system with Tape Stop!

Notes: Operation of the Astra is both simple and straightforward - the large touch panel on the front will respond gradually to soft and firm touches, making it easy to inject some human feeling into your compositions.

Being fully analogue, the controller uses an internal vactrol and slew rate limiter to make it easy for you to create smooth transitions - when used without an input, the MMI Astra uses an internal 5v source as the basis of its signal, allowing you to easily generate complex CV to control other modules, in order to create intermittent filter sweeps, resonance peaks and much more.

By using the input, you can route in both CV and audio to destinations of your choosing, attenuating and amplifying by varying pressure and position on the touch plate. Easily introduce LFOs, create huge reverb or volume swells, or intermittently introduce fading soundscapes as you play.

The front facing LED gives you immediate visual feedback on the status of the module as you play, making it easy to control the MMI Astra. It's the MMI you've wanted for years, finally made real.

Notes: Add-on for the Krait module.

Ewa was created as a lovely partner for the Krait module, a syncable 3-channel modulation source. Paired with Ewa, Krait will get new useful abilities, such as 3 freely routable cv inputs, endless encoder for smooth editing without value jumps, dedicated clock menu button and clock and reset outputs.

Each CV input can be used to record external cv source in Record mode. Beside that you can route any input to any parameter of the LFO and Random too. With Ewa now it is easy to modulate LFO rate or Random slew for example. CV inputs are bipolar and react to the signals between -5 +5 voltages.

Additionally a dedicated clock menu button and clock output can make Krait as a clock source for other modules in your system that need sync.

Notes: After Later's first ladder filter is in stereo. You'll get HP, BP. LP2, and LP4 outputs for each side. Please read below on the HP and BP outputs, as they are a bit temperamental.

Along with all of the great traditional sounds of a ladder filter, After Later have added a bias knob which starves ladder transistors of bias current. This can create some fun detuning, glitchy, and warbly sounds. It is recommended that you turn the resonance up slightly in order for it to sound best. Turning the bias will mess with the cutoff frequency and resonance settings so it takes some knob tweaking to master it. There is decent volt/octave tracking for about 3 octaves.

The HP and BP are possible due to pole mixing. When combined with the level control and the resonance it can lead to some atypical behaviours. When keeping the resonance low, and you'll need to manage the level control to get a typical HP and BP responses.

Notes: 8 channels of audio or modulation over ethernet. There are two modules and a 3' CAT7e cable to connect them together. There are 8 total channels that are unbuffered and bi-directional. The primary usage is to connect two cases or just send a bundle of signals from one part of your larger case to another. You also get the option of buffering up to four channels on each side. This gives you a local copy of the signal and sends buffered copy to the other module, saving you from having to use a MULT to keep a local copy.

Some notes:

When one side of the Light Rail is in buffered mode, you cannot send signals from the opposite side on those 4 buffered channels (the other 4 channels can still be used in bi-directional mode)

If you are after a different longer/shorter cable, you will get the best performance with CAT7e as it offers the shielding, which is used for the ground.

While the cross channel bleed is minimal, you will notice some very minor cross talk between the channels.

Notes: The CP909 is the TR-909's analogue clap sound generator in Eurorack format. This is yet another low-cost analogue drum generator from a legendary drum machine in your modular synthesizer, expanding your Tiptop Audio modular drum machine even further.

The CP909 is an exact reproduction of the original analogue circuit and with the addition of just one extra knob, "trashing" the frequency of the internal noise generator, Tiptop have added greatly to the spectrum of sounds that can be generated. All that without compromising the signature sound of the TR-909.

The CP909 clap effect is made by a special triple-saw envelope generator that controls the gain of a VCA. The sound source feeding into the VCA is made by a quasi-random logic- based noise generator. Some might call it "digital noise", though this term might be misleading in today's world of microcontrollers and sound samples. What really makes the noise generator is a ring of logic gates, so primitive, so 80s, and so much the sound of the 909 Clap!

The CP909 includes a high-powered output gain stage capable of producing hot signals. On the inputs, Tiptop have designed a pulse-shaper circuit so you can trigger the CP909 with trigger/gate signals from step sequencers, clocks, dividers, or any other pulse/clock sources. Notes: Super Sawtor is the module designed to produce unison like waveforms from the incoming signal. The best results are achieved using sawtooth, triangle or sine waveforms as an input signal. Unison spread has been tuned to give almost the same type of harmonics smearing as the famous Roland JP80X0 Supersaw oscillator. Thus feeding the Super Sawtor with a sawtooth waveform will result in a typical Supersaw output.

Though having some common features with sawtooth animators, Super Sawtor gives that vivid tension of the Supersaw waveform, which is different to imitation of the multiple oscillators sound most sawtooth animators capable of doing. The main difference is in the approach used: sawtooth animators tend to recreate continuously moving phase shift of the slightly detuned / drifting oscillators; super Sawtor in its turn creates additional pitched shifted harmonics to the input signal, which gives a different sonic character compared to sawtooth animators.

Notes: ADDAC200RM allows a simple and straight forward way to monitor the voltage of your system. A 0.1% precision analogue voltage meter shows the status of both +12V and -12V rail.

Eurorack +/-12V power rails

Although we all refer to Eurorack PSU voltages as +12V and -12V this is hardly ever the case, although most systems operate at close proximity to this ideal reference, there are situations where the drop from the ideal voltage is large enough to influence the performance of your system.

PSU current ratings

Running a PSU too close to its limits will always cause more stress to the PSU, a good practice it to use only about 75% of your PSU maximum ratings, this will greatly extend the PSU life.

PSUs will show a small voltage drop as current increases which will drastically increase when pushed closed to it's limits. Heat will also influence this drop, heat is related to the current drawn, as more current is being drawn more heat will build up on the PSU, heat conditions will reduce the maxi- mum amount of current that can be delivered by the PSU. While the current consumption drop is somewhat stable and immediate (as you turn the frame on the current consumption will stabilize in a few seconds) the heat drop will take some time to occur, heat will build up over time until it stabilizes and only if it has "headroom" to stabilize. If heat dissipation is not effective than the drop will continue until it reaches a balance point which can be several volts below the 12V reference. At this point your PSU will be under great stress and the heat generated is prone to leave some permanent scars.

Heat will start to have an impact at about an ambient temperature of 50 degrees celsius, at 70 degrees the maxi- mum current rating will drop by 50%. If your PSU is rated at 2A maximum and it's running at 70 degrees then it will only be able to deliver 1A maximum.
For the PSU this is a complex balancing act as current influences heat and heat influences the maximum amount of current available which all together influences the voltage drop.

This is why it's so important to keep the PSU load at a sensible level.

PSU protections

Some PSUs feature over voltage, over current and overheating protection and will turn off when the operating conditions trigger any of the protection threshold levels.

At this point it's typical that the PSU will enter a Hiccup mode, where it turns on checks the current conditions and quickly turns off if they haven't changed, leaving it in an intermittent limbo where it powers on and off at some regular frequency.

If the conditions change enough to drop below the protection threshold levels then the PSU will automatically recover and stay on.

PSU stress

Different situations can be responsible for causing stress that can damage the PSU, it's possible to reverse a ribbon power cable enough times or leaving it connected long enough to partly damage the PSU.

Another situation is having a module that due to some partial previous damage may be drawing more current than specified which will not be accounted for when calculating your system current consumption.

Stress can cause permanent damage to the PSU, however some damages can be only partial leaving you with a PSU that no longer features the specs described by the manufacturer but with no apparent misbehaviour. The LED monitors on bus boards will be on, but in reality it will be underperforming at an unknown percentage of the original specs. These situations can be quite hard to debug without the proper tools to evaluate the cause of the problem.

PSU impact on modules

Some modules are more susceptible to PSU changes than others, modules that feature internal regulators will be less susceptible to PSU voltage, modules that use internal +5v, +/-9v, +/-10v regulators will have more tolerance than modules that use the PSU voltages directly like it is for most cases. Also modules that use voltage reverse protection will already have a 0.3v to 0.8v drop inherent to the protection circuit.

While many digital modules can withstand lower voltages some others will be more dependent on the reference voltage and may show strange behaviours.

This module can help preventing all these situations, it won't fix any problem but can help on the day-to-day monitoring of your system and in keeping your PSU in healthy conditions.

Notes: Module A-124-2 is a special 12dB multimode filter using the "strange" filter circuit of the "EDP Wasp" (an analog synthesizer with black/yellow case built end of the seventies, manufactured by the UK company "Electronic Dream Plant").

The A-124-2 is the Slim Line version, which is only 4hp wide.

This design "abuses" digital inverters as analog operational amplifiers leading to distortions and other "dirty" effects that generate the specific sound of this filter. The filter is equipped with a band pass output and a combined low/notch/high pass output. For this output a control knob defines the relation between low and high pass signal. If both signals appear at the same level (i.e. middle position of the Mix knob) one obtains a notch filter. Otherwise the low or high pass signal predominates. The module does not feature self oscillation in contrast to most of the other filters of the A-100 system.

Notes: Module A-130-4 contains four linear VCAs with a common level control section for all four VCAs. It can be used for all applications of simultaneous amplitude/level control of up to four different audio or CV signals. A-130-4 is the replacement of the no longer available module A-132-2. Compared to the A-132-2 the width has been reduced from 8HP to 4HP.

Technical notes:

The maximum amplification for each VCA is about 1 ("Man." control fully CW). Even with an external control voltage applied to the CV input the maximum amplification is limited to 1.

The module is equipped with two internal connectors (pin headers with 4 pins each). Pin header #1 can be used to normalize the four inputs to other modules (e.g. Quad LFO A-145-4 or A-147-5, Quad ADSR A-143-2). Pin header #2 can be used to connect the four outputs to other modules.

The max. level at the VCA inputs without clipping/distortion is about 20Vpp or +/-10V.

Notes: This is a self contained analogue high hat module. This is a Transistor based VCA design. It is influenced by the DR110 drum machine. The original circuit used 4 oscillators to make the metallic audio sound. I added the original 4 oscillator, and an extra 6 oscillator circuit. The 6 oscillator version is doing a double XOR ringmod (internally). You select that by switch.

The 4 oscillator design sounds more crunchy, where as the 6 XOR circuit sounds more polished with sheen. You can blend in the amount of white noise in the mix labeled 'sizzle'.

Internally, the audio is passing through a few high pass filters, making the output sound very high in frequencies.

The module by itself is not exciting. But in the mix, with other percussion modules, this is your favorite-go-to module. It sits almost perfect in the mix.

There are two triggers. One is for 'Open' sound. The other is for 'close' sound. Both open and close have there own decay knob to adjust the length of the audio tail.

There is a tone control, labeled LPF. Use this to taper off some of the high frequencies.

Instead of adding an 'accent' control. Both triggers have been made to voltage variable. 5V triggering is the normal expected input. So a 3V trigger will sound softer in volume. 10V trigger signals will sound louder.

This module is as simple as it gets, just patch your Arturia Beat Step Pro and use the drum track.

Notes: What does this do?

This is an analogue filter based on the 1974 SEM filter. The original early design did not self oscillate into a sine wave. This one also does not self oscillate. The sound, however, makes up for that. You get the original notch sweep, and incredible band pass mode at such a low friendly price.
