Moving on from the rowdy electro indie-house grooves that made the famous at the end of the noughties, Simian Mobile Disco have become fine purveyors of experimental dance music. In that sense, Whorl is perhaps their most complete work yet. While previous albums were comprised of single hits, this latest LP works as a unit from start to finish, touching on hints of techno and delivering faint hints of krauty guitar riffs. The opener "Redshift" is sparse and aqueous, and the following tracks move with a sense of purpose, ending up on glitchy drum machine workouts and even Detroit-schooled techno tunes made up of nutty modular sequences. It's certainly a welcomed addition to their stellar catalogue and an important change in the band's aesthetic.
