Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Aroof Aftab presents her third studio album, and a record that has the power to transport listeners pretty much anywhere. While steeped in traditions stereotypically associated with her homeland, ears more attuned will quickly pick up on just how divergent this is. Whether you'd consider it a classical album is down to how you gauge that genre term, we'd say it has grown broad enough over the past century to definitely include this, but ultimately even that seems reductive.

Elements of poetry, ambient trance, jazz, minimalism, and new age, it's a spiritual and musical experience based around themes of discovery, loss, memory, and intimate connections with the Earth. Sonically, that translates as something that's at once sublime and yet also surprising, combining a multitude of influences from aeons of songwriting to create something that could not have existed in any previous era.

Review: Arooj Aftab's Night Reign is a stunning trip into the depths of the night, where inspiration thrives. Departing from themes of loss in her previous work, Aftab crafts an album rich with renewal and romance. Collaborations with artists like Cautious Clay and Moor Mother add layers to the lush soundscape, creating a cinematic experience. Each track, from the haunting 'Autumn Leaves' to the soulful 'Bolo Na,' weaves together to form a narrative of surrender and transformation. Aftab's voice, accompanied by intricate instrumentation, guides listeners through the darkness, offering moments of introspection and possibility. Night Train is a chance to throw yourself into the beauty and mystery of deep music, emerging renewed and transformed.

Review: Following up 2021's acclaimed Vulture Prince, Pakistini American singer Arooj Aftab collaborates with jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on synths to present a striking exercise in dramatic, atmospheric composition. Aftab's voice remains the centre of a creative groupthink which began in 2018, and here the musical ornamentation is turned down to a simmer, eschewing percussion in favour of ambient pastures. There's also space for Iyer and Ismaily to stretch out on their own, but ultimately this is Aftab's vehicle and her voice goes from strength to strength on this standout record.

American jazz pianist par excellence Ahmad Jamal recorded The Awakening in 1970, originally for the Impulse! label. He was joined by Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums, and amongst his own compositions such as 'The Awakening' you can hear him tackling works from Herbie Hancock amongst others. Considering Jamal was already 20 years into his career by this point, the album has been hailed by critics for highlighting his evolution as a pianist, creating a more complex style without sacrificing delicacy and expression. It's a classic which is also loaded with hooks you might well have heard elsewhere on tracks from Nas and Common, to name but a few.

Review: Christmas is a time for many things and to our mind, jazz is one of them. There is something warm and cosy about a gentle trumpet tune that makes any festive scene all the more vibey. And who could be better to soundtrack your season than the one and only Louis Armstrong. Louis Wishes You A Cool Yule arrives on suitably festive red vinyl and is the first Armstrong Christmas record ever. It offers up his holiday tracks as a coherent body of work that is a pleasure to behold from start to finish.

Review: Louis Armstrong had an unparalleled impact on American popular music. Verve Records now celebrates his legacy with an all-new collection featuring his greatest hits and most timeless recordings. This release complements Louis In London, which highlights the influence on jazz of a man known for his joyful presence and who once said he was on a mission to spread happiness - this collection underscores that purpose. His contributions shaped the course of music history and that can be heard here in these gloriously catchy and indelible jazz sounds, many of which are well loved by even those without a passion for jazz.

Review: Verve Records is set to release Louis in London, the final major performance by the legendary Louis Armstrong. Recorded live at the BBC just weeks after Armstrong topped the UK charts with 'What A Wonderful World,' this 13-track collection is made available on coloured vinyl, capturing Armstrong's vibrant energy as he performs with The All Stars on July 2, 1968. The collection spans his career, featuring everything from W.C. Handy's 'Ole Miss'' to hits like 'Mack the Knife' and 'Hello, Dolly!' This session, broadcast on September 22, 1968, on BBC TV's Show Of The Week - Louis Armstrong, was Armstrong's last significant performance. Armstrong cherished this recording, sharing it with friends and visitors, and now, more than five decades later, it's finally being released officially. With extensive liner notes by Ricky Riccardi, Armstrong's biographer, this album continues Armstrong's legacy of spreading joy and reminding us of the enduring beauty of his music.

Review: Verve Records presents Louis In London, the last great performance by one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, Louis Armstrong. Recorded live at the BBC in July 2, 1968 - weeks after the artist broke the charts with 'What A Wonderful World', which has persisted in the popular sphere most notably due to its infamous inclusion in the Toy Story repertoire - this 13-track performance also hears stellar renditions of strong-armed Armstrong greats such as 'Hello, Dolly!', all performed with his renowned band The All-Stars.

Review: 'A Gift To Pops: The Wonderful World Of Louis Armstrong All Stars' is a tribute record on which fans of the late great singer and trumpet hero all serve up their own interpretations of his sounds. It is another record that underlines how great Armstrong's influence was and allows this legend to live on through special guests such as Wynton Marsalis and Common. Each of these recordings captures the essence of the Armstrong sound as well as celebrating the 50th anniversary of the New York organisation founded Armstrong and his wife Lucille founded in 1969. This rich album is sure to draw in plenty of new fans as well as pleasing the old ones.

Review: Dorothy Ashby went down in time as one of Detroit's longstanding greats; predominantly a jazz harpist, she was one of the first and most successful jazz musicians to use the harp as a lead instrument. The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby is her ninth and penultimate album, released in 1970 through Cadet Records. Its adventurous blend of spiritual and funky jazz draws on various cultures and traditions, but was largely inspired by the words of Omar Khayyam, a 12th-century Persian poet and philosopher. Ashby expands her playing repertoire into the Japanese koto, as well as singing on some tracks, producing a sound describable as nothing less than spiritual - this is further tempered by backing flutes, oboes, vibraphones and kalimbas to boot. This one also coincides with a revived interest in the work of Rafiyq, the spoken word artist heard throughout.

Review: Baker's Holiday is a 1965 album that sees trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker paying homage to the legendary Billie Holiday. Released now on Verve, the album features Baker's signature mellow trumpet solos complemented by his occasional vocals. He is supported by a full saxophone section and a four-piece rhythm group, including renowned pianist Hank Jones, while colorful arrangements by Jimmy Mundy enrich the listening experience. The album consists of ten songs associated with Lady Day, many of which Baker had not recorded before. This classic album is now part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds vinyl reissue series, which aims to deliver audiophile-grade versions of historic jazz records. Each title in the series is mastered from original analogue tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and packaged in high-quality gatefold sleeves with tip-on jackets. Baker's Holiday exemplifies Baker's talent and serves as a beautiful tribute to one of jazz's most influential figures.

Leading a stellar combo through a program consisting mostly of vintage pop tunes, the great tenor saxophonist is heard here at his peak (though it's most notable for some of its supplementary recordings hearing Webster himself playing the piano, not the sax). Review: Usually we note how many albums along a new release is, but by 'Trio '65', Bill Evans was so deep into his live LP-releasing career that we find it difficult to count out exactly which release number this one is. Now reissued on Verve's Acoustic Sounds series - dedicated to new vinyl remasters from analog tapes - the jazz pianist's masterful hand technique is given its most thorough audiophile's listen-in yet. Joined by bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker for this 1965 recording, this one is a typically noir and cigarette-smoked tour through both Evans originals and known standards, from 'Israel' and 'Elsa to 'Come Rain Or Come Shine'.

Review: From the opening notes of the iconic 'Alamode,' this album bursts with beauty. It features the first sextet lineup of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and showcases a young Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. The band relentlessly drives the pace with each track, making a powerful impact throughout and for that rowans it became one of many Art Blakey classics. This Verve By Request release is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit, which as you will know means it sounds second to none.

Review: The godfather of soul found himself dipping into jazz on this classic but lesser-known album, Soul On Top (Verse By Request Series). Now getting a proper reissue treatment it is sure to convert many new fans to his abilities across the six sizzling tracks from this 1969 album, which includes the classic 'It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World' and a new version of 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag'. Brown provides the vocals to a 18-piece big band set up that was led by drummer Louis Bellson and arranged by Impulse! star Oliver Nelson. Brown always said he was a jazzman at heart and this goes some way to proving that, with saxophonist Maceo Parker adding plenty of vital swing.

Review: Mel Brown's Chicken Fat album is the latest to get the reissue treatment by the good folks at Verve. The guitarist's 1967 Impulse! debut is said to be one of the funkiest and most original the late ever put out. His signature picking style is clean and bluesy and was honed while he played with legends like John Lee Hooker's and T-Bone Walker's bands. There is also plenty of well swung soul-jazz in the great organ work and for this version the original audio has been transferred from the analog tapes to nice heavy vinyl.

Review: Kenny Burrell's Guitar Forms stands as a cornerstone of the jazz guitar genre, offering a masterful display of various styles, from the engaging Latin combo performance of 'Moon and Sand' with the Gil Evans Orchestra to the bluesy tones of 'Downstairs' and 'Terrace Theme'. Other highlights include the luxurious treatment of Harold Arlen's 'Last Night When We Were Young.' Burrell's thoughtful and concise solos, along with his switch to acoustic classical guitar on tracks like 'Prelude #2' and 'Loie,' further demonstrating his musical talent. Mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analogue tapes and pressed onto 180-gram LPs at Quality Record Pressings, this audiophile reissue offers a definitive listening experience. Supervised by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the album is packaged in high-quality gatefold sleeves with tip-on jackets by Stoughton Printing Co. With its rich repertoire and impeccable production, Guitar Forms is a easy purchase for any jazz enthusiast's collection, representing the timeless artistry of Kenny Burrell and his abilities in the jazz guitar genre.

It offers up plenty of unique new takes on some classic standards with modern, for the day, vocals and all pressed up as part of the Verve By Request series on nice heavyweight vinyl. Highlights come thick and fast and include the fresh scat stylings of 'On The Alamo', a brilliantly lively take on 'What A Little Moonlight Can Do' and some heart-melting tenderness on the run-through of 'There's No You'.

Tracks like 'Go Li'l Liza' and 'Swingin' Scotch' provide lively moments while a trio of ballads, including the recently and sadly passed legend that is Quincy Jones' 'Quintessence,' showcase the group's versatility. This Verve By Request edition is pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Records in Detroit so as usual offers a premium listening experience that captures the timeless essence of Hawkins' legendary sound.

Review: n 1968, Alice Coltrane embarked on her first solo endeavor with this album which served as a tribute to her late husband, John Coltrane, and features Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Garrison, and Rashied Ali - members of Coltrane's final quintet. Initially met with lukewarm reviews, this album gains significance when viewed within Coltrane's broader oeuvre. A Monastic Trio offers a glimpse into her evolving style, foreshadowing her subsequent creative trajectory and this Verve By Request reissue is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit, so captures the essence of Coltrane's pioneering spirit and lays the foundation for her enduring musical legacy.

Review: Journey in Satchidananda was the fourth solo album by Alice Coltrane and it might be her best-known work. Some of the tunes here were recorded live at the Village Gate while the rest were recorded at her home studio in Dix Hills in New York, and all of them were released in 1971. The album has grown ever more mythical in status and store since then with its transcendental spiritual jazz sounds with layered-up bells, tambourine, tanpura and more into a sound that leans heavily on Coltrane's love of Middle Eastern and North African music and culture. Earthy, bluesy, steeped in musical mantra and utterly absorbing, it's one of the most enthralling records of the era.

Review: The great Alice Coltrane was already widely revered by the time she released her third solo album Ptah, the El Daoud. It was written and recorded in 1970 in the basement of her house in Dix Hills on Long Island, New York and is noted for being the first record she made with horns. They are split between the two channels with Pharoah Sanders on the right bringing his abstract and transcendental sounds and Joe Henderson on the left bringing the intellectual vibe throughout. The post-bop sounds find Coltrane playing piano and harp receptions at the time were warm critically and with fans. The otherworldly sound is drenched in blues and perfect for some mindful meditations.

Review: As part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series - which champions historic, fan and critical jazz favourites - we're delighted to get a look-in at one of John Coltrane's lesser known live albums. 'Live At The Village Vanguard' was recorded live at New York's iconic jazz club all the way back in November 1961, and was the visionary Trane's first official live album, him being in his early 30s at the time. Joined by Eric Dolphy on clarinet, McCoy Tuner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison & Reggie Workman alternating on bass, this album makes us truly feel transported back to an earlier, steamier version of 60s NY - jumpy bass and drums of 'Spiritual' and 'Chasin' The Trane' convey a mood of jazz frisk and respite from the city's trilbied bustle. This is a new 180-gram LP version, mastered from the original tapes.

Review: It goes without saying that 'A Love Supreme' is in the upper echelons of jazz history. A spiritual and emotional proclamation from American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, the 32 minute runtime is a narrative of strife and struggle with addiction as well as the notable repetition of his riff in all 12 keys throughout the session in 'Acknowledgement'. In many ways you could say Coltrane's playing wasn't improvised at all, and you could argue that the session was better off for it. At the end of the half an hour, the narrative unwinds and Coltrane is declaring a faith to God, a musical thankyou to his faith that kept him true throughout his trials following a spiritual awakening in 1957 - what resulted was an undisputed musical masterpiece.
