Review: Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Aroof Aftab presents her third studio album, and a record that has the power to transport listeners pretty much anywhere. While steeped in traditions stereotypically associated with her homeland, ears more attuned will quickly pick up on just how divergent this is. Whether you'd consider it a classical album is down to how you gauge that genre term, we'd say it has grown broad enough over the past century to definitely include this, but ultimately even that seems reductive.
Elements of poetry, ambient trance, jazz, minimalism, and new age, it's a spiritual and musical experience based around themes of discovery, loss, memory, and intimate connections with the Earth. Sonically, that translates as something that's at once sublime and yet also surprising, combining a multitude of influences from aeons of songwriting to create something that could not have existed in any previous era.

Review: Following up 2021's acclaimed Vulture Prince, Pakistini American singer Arooj Aftab collaborates with jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on synths to present a striking exercise in dramatic, atmospheric composition. Aftab's voice remains the centre of a creative groupthink which began in 2018, and here the musical ornamentation is turned down to a simmer, eschewing percussion in favour of ambient pastures. There's also space for Iyer and Ismaily to stretch out on their own, but ultimately this is Aftab's vehicle and her voice goes from strength to strength on this standout record.

Review: American jazz pianist par excellence Ahmad Jamal recorded The Awakening in 1970, originally for the Impulse! label. He was joined by Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums, and amongst his own compositions such as 'The Awakening' you can hear him tackling works from Herbie Hancock amongst others. Considering Jamal was already 20 years into his career by this point, the album has been hailed by critics for highlighting his evolution as a pianist, creating a more complex style without sacrificing delicacy and expression. It's a classic which is also loaded with hooks you might well have heard elsewhere on tracks from Nas and Common, to name but a few.

Review: Dorothy Ashby went down in time as one of Detroit's longstanding greats; predominantly a jazz harpist, she was one of the first and most successful jazz musicians to use the harp as a lead instrument. The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby is her ninth and penultimate album, released in 1970 through Cadet Records. Its adventurous blend of spiritual and funky jazz draws on various cultures and traditions, but was largely inspired by the words of Omar Khayyam, a 12th-century Persian poet and philosopher. Ashby expands her playing repertoire into the Japanese koto, as well as singing on some tracks, producing a sound describable as nothing less than spiritual - this is further tempered by backing flutes, oboes, vibraphones and kalimbas to boot. This one also coincides with a revived interest in the work of Rafiyq, the spoken word artist heard throughout.

Review: Saxophonist Albert Ayler laid down his controversial piece de resistance, Love Cry, in 1968. Renowned for its psychedelic influences, weird use of harpsichord, and subversion of worldless vocal traditions (the ultimate finale, 'Universal Indians', is by far the album's star piece, thanks to cathartic trills from Ayler himself), the album was also panned by some at the time, such as writer Val Wilmer passing comment on Ayler's voice as untrained and "torturous". But we believe transgressions such as this are ones that make manifest the radical potential in free jazz; after all, art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. It's albums like Love Cry - which came about at a time of radical transformation in the world, and which preceded Ayler's death by only two years - which restore our faith in music.

Review: Soulville is quintessential Ben Webster: intimate, tender, endlessly expressive. Webster was internationally recognized as one of Jazz's elder statesman when he recorded this album in 1957. Leading a stellar combo through a program consisting mostly of vintage pop tunes, the great tenor saxophonist is heard here at his peak (though it's most notable for some of its supplementary recordings hearing Webster himself playing the piano, not the sax). Review: The godfather of soul found himself dipping into jazz on this classic but lesser-known album, Soul On Top (Verse By Request Series). Now getting a proper reissue treatment it is sure to convert many new fans to his abilities across the six sizzling tracks from this 1969 album, which includes the classic 'It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World' and a new version of 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag'. Brown provides the vocals to a 18-piece big band set up that was led by drummer Louis Bellson and arranged by Impulse! star Oliver Nelson. Brown always said he was a jazzman at heart and this goes some way to proving that, with saxophonist Maceo Parker adding plenty of vital swing.

Review: Journey in Satchidananda was the fourth solo album by Alice Coltrane and it might be her best-known work. Some of the tunes here were recorded live at the Village Gate while the rest were recorded at her home studio in Dix Hills in New York, and all of them were released in 1971. The album has grown ever more mythical in status and store since then with its transcendental spiritual jazz sounds with layered-up bells, tambourine, tanpura and more into a sound that leans heavily on Coltrane's love of Middle Eastern and North African music and culture. Earthy, bluesy, steeped in musical mantra and utterly absorbing, it's one of the most enthralling records of the era.

Review: It goes without saying that 'A Love Supreme' is in the upper echelons of jazz history. A spiritual and emotional proclamation from American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, the 32 minute runtime is a narrative of strife and struggle with addiction as well as the notable repetition of his riff in all 12 keys throughout the session in 'Acknowledgement'. In many ways you could say Coltrane's playing wasn't improvised at all, and you could argue that the session was better off for it. At the end of the half an hour, the narrative unwinds and Coltrane is declaring a faith to God, a musical thankyou to his faith that kept him true throughout his trials following a spiritual awakening in 1957 - what resulted was an undisputed musical masterpiece.

Review: Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! was recorded in 1961 on Verve, and it captures all-time jazz great Ella Fitzgerald as most people of the time got to hear her live, backed up by a quartet. There are some essential soulful standards included in this set such as 'A Night In Tunisia' and 'Cry Me A River', while the title track is a sprightly burst of swinging sunshine typical of the early bebop period. Review: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong came together first of all for their 1956 album Ella and Louis. Just a year later, the enduring jazz icons hooked up once more on Verve Records for the simply titled Ella and Louis Again. It was recorded at Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios in Hollywood and where their first album was all duets, this one features seven solo vocal tracks by either Armstrong or Fitzgerald amongst its dozen duet tracks. Louis only played trumpet on six of these tunes but there was such a vibe between the two artists that it was never seen as an issue.

Review: The plainspoken title Previously Unheard Recordings was given to Stan Getz and Bill Evans' six-track set of rarities back in 1974. The result of a recording session completed over ten years earlier in 1963, all the pieces heard here shine bright lights on the pianist and saxophonist's synergistic powers, and come backed by auxiliary instrumental incantations from two bassists, Ron Carter and Richard Davis, as well as drumming by Elvin Jones. Emblematic of the cool jazz style, the overgirding mood is one of time-lapsed delight and lightness of being, but yet which is not fearful of life's downer moments; this loyalty to jazz's complexity of mood can be heard all the way from 'Night And Day' or the closing 'Grandfather's Waltz'.

Review: Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock sure did love to record music. The New Standard was his fortieth, four oh, album and not by a long way was it his last. It came in 1996 on the Verve label and is the sound of the great American musicians offering up his own jazz renditions of classic and more contemporary rock and r&b tunes.
