Review: French outfit Chateau Flight have spent two years in the studio making music, playing around and experimenting and now the fruits of that work are presented on this new album La Folie Studio. It is full of the sound of analogue machines conversing and the artists themselves speaking through their darkened basslines or eerie pads. Occult worlds are crafted, ambient soundscapes are cooked up and leftfield cosmic explorations occur throughout a journeying album full of a wide range of emotions. This lovely record features guests on the odd track such as Johnny Nash on guitar, Cosmic Neman mumbling on 'Mange', John Cravache playing 'his special organ" and Bony Bikaye singing on 'Esika Molimo Ezali'. It's an occult world of left of centre sound that will keep you coming back for more.

Review: This is a significant release for Versatile Records. It marks up a century of releases - in their 20th year, no less - and has been described by founder Gilb'R as "probably our oddest release yet". It's certainly eccentric. The album was produced by I:Cube for school friend Cravache, whose dada-inspired poetry and spoken ramblings are dotted throughout the LP. Musically, it's deliciously wayward, offering up a mix of soundscapes - some beguiling and ambient, others exotic and percussion heavy - Tom Waits-inspired fuzz-rock, and tactile synth-pop. It's really rather good, and sounds like the sort of record collectors will be hunting for in 20 or 30 years time.

Review: The Explosion is a trio, headed up by Versatile founder Gilbert "Glib'r" Cohen, that can trace its' roots back to Chateau Flight's wonderful 2014 covers of vintage Terry Riley material. Since then, the combo has been meeting for nightly jam sessions, some of the results of which can be seen on this superb debut full-length. Rooted in experimental, atmospheric ambience but with regular nods towards American minimalism, kosmiche, dub techno and acid electronica, the album's six tracks are evocative, imaginative, dreamy and intensely beautiful. While intellectual and well thought-out, the most striking feature of The Explosion is the heady, intoxicating feel of the music; even at its' creepiest (as on the low-slung, "Disco Blind"), it's an album that bristles with tuneful intent.

Review: The brilliant I:Cube album arrives on double vinyl! !"M" Megamix sees I:Cube show himself to be a master of alluring grooves, and he uses that gift to its full potential here. The Frenchman's lack of pretension is one of his greatest strengths; the I:Cube way is a direct and satisfying one. At no point is this LP cheesy or hackneyed, but it never tries to be too clever for its own good. "M" Megamix is a triumphant statement of what a dance music album should feel like. It might not be a comprehensive answer, but it certainly puts paid to all those "collection of singles" efforts out there. One of the year's best LPs - don't miss the chance to grab it on wax.

Review: There's always some magic in the air when you receive and start to unwrap a new I:Cube release. One of the lesser sung but undisputed legends of the French electronic, house and dance music landscape, his rise through the Parisian underground in the mid-late 1990s has informed a stylistic diversity throughout his oeuvre, and in his club sets, meaning you could be about to hear almost anything, but it's definitely going to be amazing. That's certainly true of studio album seven (under the I:Cube solo moniker). Eye Cube is another trippy triumph, calling at pitstops like the beguiling downbeat synth jazz dream of 'Kaszio Plus 1', the heavy, immersive and slightly shamanic tones of 'La Grotte Aux Fees', and the raw, Silver Apples-esque hypnotic dance floor business of 'Vantableu', among other destinations. A gripping ride we implore you to take.

Review: Zombie Zombie's Etienne Jaumet returns with a second album La Visite courtesy of enigmatic Parisian label Versatile. Jaumet's sound flutters somewhere in the vast, bottomless pit that lies between house and electro-acoustic so there's always something new and fresh to be expected on a release from the man. The opener "Metallik Cages" sets the scene perfectly with its 4/4 kick and odd, floaty melodies, clicks and mind-bending vocals. Jaumet also plays with the totally abstract on tracks like "Module Mou" and "Moderne Jungle", the latter being one of the most interesting electronic jazz tunes we've heard this year! Check it, you know it's always quality from Gilb'R's mighty Versatile.

Review: We've noticed that it's always a special surprise from France's Versatile, and more so in the last few years since the label has truly began to diversify into countless genres, themes, and acoustic selections. This time we have a more worldly release from Gilb'R and the rest of the crew, one which sees the label boss team up with Abu Sayah and King Ghazi for "Houran", an Eastern meditative swarmer with a deeply mystical air running through its pipes. The dance aspect comes through the remixes: Gilb'R himself adds a bundle of drums and sequenced bass to the Middle-Eastern acoustics of "Shamaleh", Versatile veteran I:Cube spins "Houran" into a brooding techno slitherer, while SEX TAGS kingpin DJ SO-PHAT reinterprets the same tune under a much stringer dose of opiates. The uncredited dub version adds extra juice to an already sublime release. So very much recommended!

Review: The painfully prolific Versatile label, out of France, returns with an uber-special compilation of Selected Works from Rex Ilusivii, a sound composer by the name of Mitar Suboti? who was responsible for pushing the boundaries of house and techno further and further as the 80s progressed into the 90s. This material is truly special and, of course, it is not available in any other format or on any other label; tunes like "Forced March", an off-kilter percussion dance, or even the lop-sided ambient and drone of "Plavobradi" and "Veliki Prekor" provide freshness and diversity to house and techno sets worldwide. They have been constructed by a producer who has been in the shadows of the elite for the last 30+ years. Highly recommended!

Review: While largely unknown this side of the English Channel, Benjamin Vidal is one of France's most notorious crate diggers and record collectors. It's nice to see Gilb'r and company giving him a chance to showcase these digging skills via a compilation of his own on Versatile. Disco Sympathie differs from many bog standard disco compilations as it focuses entirely on French music from the early 1980s. The names are unfamiliar, and the sounds even more so; a hotchpotch of quirky, tongue-in-cheek cuts that variously doff a beret to American boogie, British and German synth-wave, eccentric synth-pop and the kind of expansive post-disco madness that thrills and intrigues in equal measure. It also features Sonia's "Sur Ma Musique", a hidden gem from 1980 that joins the dots between tongue-in-cheek Italo and throbbing synth-pop. It's not an expensive record, but it's certainly a great one.

Review: Five years ago, French record collector Vidal Benjamin wowed us with "Disco Sympathie", a killer compilation of obscure Gallic disco and boogie gems. For this similarly dusty-fingered follow-up, he's set his gaze on French new wave and synth-pop. It's an entertaining and eye-opening listen that moves from the samba-chanson of Cecilia and the fizzing electro-funk of Electropic, to the sweet and cheery synth-pop of "Reserve". Highlights in between include the bustling synth-pop sleaziness of Sonia's "J'Sais Plus Ou J'En Suis", the throbbing new wave quirkiness of Milpatte's "Je Vais Danser" and the low-slung post-punk pop of I:Cube's fresh re-edit of Yogo's "Reve De Star".

Review: Versatile has undergone a serious resurrection over the last few years. For a label that was once heavily rooted in France's early noughties house scene with artists like Pepe Bradock at its core, the label has now expanded and moved on to much broader musical landscapes. Zombie Zombie have already released on the label, most notably on an EP containing a dangerously abrasive DJ Sotofett re-shuffle, and they now drop an absolute stomper of an LP for DJ Gilb'r's label. Ranging from nutty, quasi-house tracks such as "La Danse Des Ombre" to more improvisational synthesizer experiments like "Le Dernier Bain" or "Chuchotements", this LP has it all. There's a prominent Eastern influence in there, too, for all you Acid Arab fans!

Review: France's Zombie Zombie are perhaps the most representative outfit of Versatile's wet and wild discography, and the duo have served up some real fire power on the label over the years. Two years on from their last album, Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman return with a new full-length offering that originated as a soundtrack to Elsa Guerin and Martin Palisse's abstract Slow Futur juggling performance. "Hyperspace" opens with a soft-spoken tribal groove, a sublimely hazy and dubbed-out opener to let those synths warm up their muscles before the electro-leaning buzzes and low-ends of the quirky space-house jam that is "Slow Futur". "Blue Screen" is as majestic and hollow as it is cosmic, and its airy groove made of blocky synth rolls is mightily refreshing, while "Extra Life" goes back to an 80's flex thanks to its metallic drum pattern and deep, far-reaching synths. A glorious return to action from the cosmic brothers!

Review: French duo Zombie Zombie return to DJ Gilb'R's Versatile label with their fifth album for the label, yet another slow-burning cross-cross of dance music psychedelia. Livity is an album of pace and wonder, endlessly ignoring the common practice found across many 'dance' tunes, and applying some best-in-class lessons from progressive rock, jazz, and everything in between. Of course, moments like "Hippocampe" or "Looose" do provide some dance floor comfort, but it's the vast and open-ended spirals of percussion and harmonics on tunes like "Acera" which make take this from being a good dance music album to an absolutely stellar piece of experimental music.
