Review: Rush's Roll The Bones reissue for 2025 brings this 1991 classic back to vinyl with a fresh coat of audio enhancement. Kicking off with the energetic 'Dreamline,' the album effortlessly blends progressive rock with more accessible, radio-friendly sounds. Tracks like 'Bravado' showcase the band's refined songwriting, balancing introspection with their signature musicianship. The title track, 'Roll The Bones,' with its groovy bassline and playful lyrics, remains one of the band's most memorable moments. This LP reissue offers both die-hard fans and newcomers a chance to hear the band's versatile sound in pristine analog form.

Review: In 1993, Rush leaned into a heavier, guitar-driven sound, stripping back the synths of their earlier work. Tracks like 'Animate' open with robust riffs and tight rhythms, setting a confident tone, while 'Stick It Out' adds a grunge-inspired rawness that reflects the shifting rock landscape of the 90s. Geddy Lee's basslines are as commanding as ever, threading through Alex Lifeson's crunching guitar work and Neil Peart's signature, intricate drumming. The production captures a raw energy, showcasing a band comfortable in reinvention without losing their edge.

Review: Rhino introduce Al Stewart's Now Playing on brand new sea blue vinyl. Featuring standout Stewart classics like 'Year of the Cat' and 'Time Passages' - known for their intricate storytelling and folk-rock fusion - this benighted new playlist, a greatest hits compilation, offers an arresting journey through Stewart's narrative world and melodic sensibility. An instrumental part of the English folk rock revival of the 1960s, Stewart's (not) one-hit harker-backer 'The Year Of The Cat' will be the one that most listeners recognise here, regaling the tale of an unnamed protagonist chancing upon a gauzy romantic adventure after visiting an exotic bazaar.

Review: In 1994, Stone Temple Pilots returned to the studio to record Purple, their highly anticipated second album following the success of their debut Core in 1992, which sold over eight million copies. Purple debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart and went on to sell more than six million copies. To celebrate its legacy, Rhino drops this, Purple Rarities, a long player pressed on purple vinyl featuring demos, early versions and acoustic recordings from the 2019 Super Deluxe Edition, all available exclusively for RSD Black Friday.

Review: The Stooges' self-titled debut album, released in 1969 and produced by John Cale, is a raw, intense precursor to punk rock. Tracks like '1969' and 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' are renowned for their gritty, rebellious energy, embodying the stripped-down, visceral essence that would later define punk. While much of the album is driven by simple chord progressions and relentless intensity, longer tracks like the experimental 'We Will Fall' showcase the band's willingness to push boundaries, blending psychedelic rock with elements of drone and even Indian music. Despite being labeled as punk, the album leans toward psychedelic punk or heavy drone rock, with extended jams and impressive solos that keep things fresh just before they risk becoming monotonous. Ultimately, The Stooges stands as a powerful, pioneering album, praised for its raw conviction and groundbreaking sound, making it essential for fans of protopunk, garage rock, or anyone curious about the roots of punk music.

Review: If you're a new band introducing yourself to the world it makes sense to keep your album to under 40 minutes, like David Byrne and co did with Talking Heads: 77. But the seminal new wave band, who emerged from the New York punk scene in the 70s, have earned the right to keep us on the line for a lot longer and give us the companion tracks we sorely deserve after years of fandom. There's rarities, unreleased outtakes and live recordings, which give us an intimate insight into a truly iconic band, who were at the very top of their game at the time they were making this record. Afterall, coming up with 'Psycho Killer' for a debut album shows that years spent honing their sound and shopping around for the right record deal before landing at Sire records turned out to be a shrewd move. We're still listening to them today and so will our kids and our kids' kids.

Review: As part of Rhino Records' Start Your Ear Off Right series - which consists of reissued versions of classic albums by Dream Theater, Fleetwood Mac, The Ramones, ZZ Top and many more - comes this fabulous new version of Allen Toussaint's Southern Nights. Originally released in 1975, this is a celebrated album, showcasing Toussanint's signature blend of funk, soul and r&b. One of many records to put Touissant on the map as a soul songsmith, and to associate him with the rich musical tradition of New Orleans, the record is well-known and much celebrated for its bold and unexpected use of orchestral arrangements, unusual for New Orleans r&b at the time.

Review: The 500 Days of Summer soundtrack is a timeless blend of indie and alternative anthems that perfectly capture the film’s blend of romantic highs and disillusioned lows. Curated to reflect the journey of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel), the music serves as a character in itself, embodying the emotional stages of love and heartache. From the start, Regina Spektor’s 'Us' sets a hopeful yet ironic tone, foreshadowing a love story that isn't quite what it seems. The Smiths’ 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' becomes the shared heartbeat of Tom and Summer, sparking their connection over a mutual love for melancholic pop. Daryl Hall & John Oates’ 'You Make My Dreams' injects infectious joy into Tom’s post-date bliss, creating one of the film’s most iconic scenes, full of choreographed optimism. The soundtrack doesn’t shy away from melancholy, as Simon & Garfunkel’s 'Bookends' hauntingly underscores the pivotal shift in their relationship, reflecting Tom’s heartbreak. Each song, from Feist's whimsical 'Mushaboom' to Doves' reflective 'There Goes The Fear'. deepens the narrative. In blending '80s pop hits with indie gems, the soundtrack remains a perfect encapsulation of love’s bittersweet nature, marking the film’s lasting impact on fans and romantics alike.

The Monocles - "The Spider & The Fly" (2:07)
Review: The Nuggets series first landed in the 70s as an early example of the kind of 'diggers delight' compilations that looked deep into hidden corners to find rare, unfathomable sonic treats. The focus of these albums was the 60s psychedelic explosion, when every town was teeming with kids in garages experimenting with music (and, er, possibly the odd refreshment or two). Volume two of the series is just as seminal as volume one, as we get treated to some seriously heady gear from helices of The Lovin' Spoonful and The Sonics amongst many other lesser-spotted gems.

Review: Say what you will about the idea of a Best Of, sometimes it really does pay to have a good proportion of 'the hits' in one place. Now Playing might be based around a relatively obvious playlist if you've been a fan of the band longer than a couple of minutes, centring as it does on the group's late era classics, but when the late career classics are this good who the hell cares? Well, maybe Loaded and The Velvet Underground & Nico, original LPs that contribute the vast majority of what's here. Anthems like 'Sweet Jane', 'Who Loves the Sun', 'I'm Waiting For the Man', 'Femme Fatale' and 'I'll be Your Mirror' dominate here, and those presented as live recordings are particularly unmissable. Once again, then, here's proof of why Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Angus MacLise, Moe Tucker and Nico remain among the most influential troupes of all time.

Review: In the summer of 1970, The Velvet Underground, now fronted by Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison, delivered Loaded, an album bursting with melody, emotion, and New York City's gritty essence. Despite personnel shiftsiDoug Yule replacing John Cale and Mo Tucker absent on maternity leaveithe band crafted what would become a rock classic. With Atlantic Records demanding hits, Loaded was a tongue-in-cheek nod to their drug-fueled reputation, yet the album is packed with catchy, proto-punk gems. Opening with the breezy 'Who Loves the Sun', the record transitions into the unforgettable 'Sweet Jane' and 'Rock & Roll', both essential rock anthems. These tracks encapsulate the blend of beauty and dissonance that defines The Velvets' soundia sweet, jangly exterior with darker undercurrents. Loaded has it all: heartfelt ballads like 'I Found A Reason' and 'New Age' and the explosive energy of 'Head Held High.' The record's final track, 'Oh Sweet Nuthin'', is a slow-building masterpiece with Sterling Morrison's sometimes overlooked guitar work on full display . While it's more accessible than previous albums, Loaded remains a definitive reflection of the band's gritty artistry and the spirit of NYC.

Review: The reissue of David Coverdale's early solo albums, now appearing under the Whitesnake band name, is a thrilling celebration of his legacy, especially with the recent passing of the iconic singer. Originally released after a few years after Deep Purple's split in 1976, Northwinds mark a pivotal moment in Coverdale's career, featuring future Whitesnake guitarist Micky Moody and production by Deep Purple's Roger Glover. His second solo album showcases a young Coverdale discovering his sound, with tracks like 'Keep on Giving Me Love' and 'Breakdown' hinting at the hard rock brilliance that would define Whitesnake. Moody's guitar work and Coverdale's evolving songwriting shine throughout, particularly on 'Queen of Hearts' and 'Only My Soul,' which offer glimpses of the band's future direction. This album captures the raw, bluesy energy that laid the foundation for one of rock's greatest bands. With improved production and the historical significance of these tracks, this release is not just a nostalgic trip but a vital piece of rock history. Embrace the chance to experience the early roots of Whitesnake and the undeniable talent of David Coverdale in his formative years.

Review: The reissue of David Coverdale's 1977 debut solo album, now presented under the Whitesnake band name, is an exciting opportunity to revisit the roots of one of rock's most iconic voices. Originally released following Deep Purple's split, this album, produced by ex-Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, is a key piece of the Whitesnake legacy, showcasing the early formation of the band's sound. With the recent passing of David Coverdale, this reissue is a fitting tribute, highlighting the journey of a singer who would go on to define the sound of an era. The album features future Whitesnake guitarist Micky Moody, whose collaboration with Coverdale on tracks like 'Blindman' and the title track 'Whitesnake' hints at the powerful direction the band would later take. From the r&b-infused rocker 'Lady' to the soulful 'Peace Lovin' Man', this album is an excellent first solo effort by the artist. This reissue is a celebration of David Coverdale's enduring legacy and the foundation of a band that would go on to rock the world.

Review: Steven Wilson's remix job injects new clarity into this iconic 1971 album, enhancing its already intricate compositions. The dynamic interplay of soaring vocals, textured guitar and Chris Squire's unmistakable bass lines feels revitalised, while Bill Bruford's drumming gains a sharp, articulate edge. The production balances the band's sprawling progressive rock vision with a modern, polished presentation, amplifying the complexity of the arrangements without losing their original charm. It's an experience that allows listeners to rediscover familiar layers while uncovering details previously buried in the mix.
