Ocbinh's Groove
Review: For their 86th release the might, mighty Perlon bring on board Margaret Dygas with a self titled EP. Working her way through sparse and cosmic minimal spirals as we expect, "Missing You Less" shows her delicate edge with light piano keys and muffled strings giving a feminine touch to her otherwise driving style. "Soon" reverts to Dygas as we know her, with hitting drum patterns and reverbed tech goodness from the start. "Country Way Of Life" on the second disk is meandering and spooky, with indecipherable vocals popping up intermittently as a heavy kick and syncopated drums rise from below. "Ocbinh's Groove" meanwhile is dark and moody, as pads swoop and samples howl. Diverse, quality, pure minimal techno... Perlon live on.

Review: Most commonly known for his minimalist, click house endeavours as Akufen, Marc Leclair switches attention to one of his lesser used aliases in Horror Inc, serving up a full album for the Perlon label. Leclair has operated as Horror Inc sparingly over the years, serving up only three original EPs and a smattering of remixes - with his last release under the name coming in 2010's Aurora EP for Haunt. There's a sense of the unknown about Briefly Eternal then, moreso as Perlon have been pretty guarded about it ahead of release. A decidedly cinematic downbeat opener in the shape of "Phowa" sets the tone, as Leclair uses the LP format to showcase his talent for instrumentation and orchestral arrangement more than ever before. Perlon fans need not worry, those skipping, expertly produced beats are still there for the most part.

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Chris Korda, a transgender artist and activist whose last releases of note came on famed electroclash label International Deejay Gigolo way back in 2004. New album "Akoko Ajeji" is very much a surprise return to action, though its melodious, ear-pleasing and accessible blend of house and techno drums, digital synthesizer sounds and cheery post synth-pop refrains is both striking and hugely addictive. Korda's compositions offer subtle nods towards various vintage house and techno styles - particularly turn-of-the-90s deep house and early Chicago jack - but never sound anything less than thrillingly DIY productions giddily made in back rooms and bedrooms over the last decade and a half.

Review: Thomas Melchior's take on minimalist house and techno - wonky and off-kilter, but surprisingly funky, far-sighted and pleasingly atmospheric - is amongst the most accessible and ear-catching around. It's a sound that works as well on albums as it does on singles and EPs, so it's somewhat surprising to discover that Vulnerabilities is his first full-length as Melchior Productions since 2007. It's been worth the wait though, with the veteran producer offering up tracks that combine brilliantly programmed, often off-kilter drums with smooth but druggy basslines, tactile chords, addictive melodic refrains and his usual subtle (and occasional not to subtle) nods towards deep house, dub techno, two-step garage, trippy ambient and the quirky, funk-fuelled eccentricity of Ricardo Villalobos productions.

Review: Maayan Nidam first made a splash on the scene over a decade ago during the mid '00s minimal boom under aliases like Miss Fitz, Laverne Radix or Spunky Brewster, with early releases on main labels such as Contexterrior, Archipel and Love Letters From Oslo at the time. Her relationship with Perlon extends back to 2009, where she first surfaced with her Untitled EP and several others over the years since. Sea Of Thee is her third full length album, and sees her deliver a selection of hypnotic reductionist grooves - a perfect afterhours dancefloor soundtrack curated by Nidam as a top selector.

Review: Bruno Pronsato is one of minimal's more characterful producers and for that reason he has survived the passage of time better than the genre itself, in some ways. This new album comes on the always reliably excellent Perlon label and across nine track it explores succulent synth symphonies, abstract sound design and cinematic grooves that will make for tripped out 5am club experiences as well as they will stand up to close home listening on a good set of headphones. The arrangements here are often sparse, but the atmospheres are always full and absorbing, making it another fine entry into this artist's catalogue.

Review: After previous travels through space in the minimal constellation on records for Binh's Time Passages and Vera and Alexandra's Melliflow label, Berlin-dwelling Italian producer lands himself an impressive debut on the mighty Perlon. Fresh off a new Fumiya Tanaka LP and that superb Margaret Dygas 12", Perlon are operating on all cylinders at the moment and this debut Spacetravel LP is a fine addition to the label canon. Some eight tracks deep, the cannily-titled Dancing Therapy already sounds like a future Perlon classic, breezing from hypnotic reduced house ("Kill Divas") to haywire techno deviations via stripped down minimal DJ tools. Dancing therapy indeed!

Review: While he's barely paused for breath in the last decade, it's still been eight years since Fumiya Tanaka delivered his last album, Unknown 3. The epitome of long overdue, You Find The Key is his fourth album. Interestingly, it sees the 44 year-old, Japanese producer tweaking his now familiar bass-heavy minimal techno blueprint. Thrillingly, the bass lines are bolder and jauntier, and the beats jazzier, resulting in an altogether funkier take on the minimal techno style. Of course, there are still moments that recall his previous work - see the deep and dubby "Swallowed Memory" - but it's those that take a sideways step towards funk-fuelled pastures ("Munich Uncertain", "The Only Your Researching") that stand out.

Review: Three years on from his last full-length outing on Perlon, Japanese techno maverick Fumiya Tanaka returns to the admirable Japanese imprint with an eccentric set bristling with off-kilter dancefloor treats. His particular take on minimal techno is far more rubbery, synthesizer-rich and funky than many of his peers, a trait that makes his glitchy but elastic club cuts stand out from the crowd. Highlights across the three slabs of wax include the bleeping, dub-wise peak-time weirdness of the title track, the sub-heavy jazz/minimal techno fusion of "Breakthrough", the Villalobos-gone-wild flex of "I Want To Be A Human Being" and the squelchy, loose-limbed goodness of "Birth Of The Respect Club".

stimulating context of forwardness and incalculability, the 16 new tracks on 'Superlongevity 4' once more
mark the label's distinctive approach to sire a swarm of heralds who are going to effect a climate change above
inventive ingenuity.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos's third full-length (unless you count his Fabric mix and Re: ECM project with Max Loderbauer) entitled Dependent & Happy had been eagerly anticipated since its announcement early this year, and on its vinyl release finds its 14 tracks split up across 5x12" singles. The results are as sublime as you would expect from the master of minimal; "Tu Actitud" opens with its half-spoken vocals and jaunty electric bass, "Timemorf" continues with its minimal Chilean rhythms, while "Grumax" is the undisputed highlight - a combination of tense, sprung bass and discordant strings arranged in the way only Villalobos can.

Review: The second of two EPs collecting Ricardo Villalobos's third album Dependent & Happy saw the producer go further in with the tunnelling grooves, with six tracks that take an explicitly darker turn than the first EP. "Zuipox" consists of micro bass and skewed vocal echoes, while "Kehaus" takes things in as ravey a direction as the producer goes with its insistent bass stab and rolling percussion and "Die Schwarze Massai" takes a more syncopated approach with it's complex rhythm and dreamy chords. "Put Your Lips" takes an insistent vocal snippet and welds a solid 4/4 groove to it with very little else. "Samma" however is the real killer, a melancholic combination of spring loaded percussion and chords warped out of shape.

In the sprawling tendrils of minimal mastery Ricardo Villalobos has attached his name to, it's not always easy to pick out the stone cold classics. 2003 album Alcachofa is, however, a stand out moment from his career when he proved to be more than just a club 12" artist. Sure, the record is mainly driven by house rhythms, but this was a demonstration of the creative power within the minimal approach and Villalobos could get creative more than most. Originally released on Playhouse and now repressed on four 12"s by Perlon, it's a fitting tribute to a landmark record, now with added tracks from the accompanying Alcachofa Tools 12".

Review: Ricardo Villalobos has clearly found a kindred spirit in former Sun Electric and Moritz Von Oswald trio man Max Loderbauer. The duo has been remixing together for some time, delivering some notable reworks, including a stunning minimal jazz re-imagining of Nightmares on Wax's "Aftermath". Safe in Harbour marks the Berlin-based pair's first original work together under the Vilod alias, and continues their theme of melding elements of fizzing jazz, minimal, and dub techno. It's an impressive set, all told, full of wonky, off-kilter fusions of live instrumentation - most notably some brilliant drumming - glitchy electronics and a Berghain-friendly attitude. In fact, it may be Villalobos' most impressive studio work to date.

Review: Originally formed in 2014 as a trio dedicated to blurring the boundaries, the Waves now exists as a solo project of one of the members: Berlin-based Maayan Nidam. Here she presents her long-promised debut album, 'Motorikherz', an atmospheric and off-kilter affair that confidently joins the dots between eyes-closed experimentalism, wonky post-punk-pop, minimal house, opioid electronica and stylish new wave pop. It's opaque and atmospheric in the extreme, with Nidam's evocative vocals rising above (or sometimes being buried beneath) sparse but warming analogue electronics, stripped-back rhythms, heavily processed instrumentation and inventive production trickery. As you can see, it's hard to describe, but it's adventurous, entertaining and - for the most part - surprisingly soothing.
