Review: 'Radiotherapy' is undoubtedly Bitstream's darkest work to date - 5 tracks of splintered, disassembled, re-patched, re-wired and rebuilt electroid mayhem that carries with it that signature Bitstream sound that has earn them such a devoted following over the last couple of years. The title track opens proceedings and is simply huge - crisp, blue beats pummel and intensify with an almost new-wave synth vibe elevating the track until everything strips away, leaving only a high-end tone that pulses and intensifies...Inevitably blowing and breaking into a massive crescendo, totally devastating stuff. 'Madame Resonance' is up next, a kind of malfunctioned tribute to the theme to Star Trek: disturbed and skewed, the beats tough and stripped accordingly, killer styles once again. Onto the flip and the awesome 'Bionic Hands Of Daddy Longs - Part Two', those of you who know 'Part One' might be better prepared for this - a frenzy of turntablist electro, a genre that these guys more or less designed and configured themselves with its belted powerhaus structures and brilliant display of skill...play loud! 'Lost Cluster', finally, brings things to a close with a chilling reference to the 'Monolith' in '2001: A Space Odysey': layered, distressed angelic choir voices at long last breaking into a blue crisp signature Bitstream squashed beat. 5 tracks wide, extra luxurious spot-gloss sleeve print, ace.

Post
Review: Things are rumbling in Mark Stewart's studio. The a-side of "Warehouse Sessions Volume 4" is dominated by "Instinct", a track with a percussive spine so crisp and spacious it almost threw us off our chairs the first time we heard its ridiculous square bassline kick in. This is vintage club music: thick with a filthy kink in the arrangement and so beautifully produced that we honestly think its the most incredible cut we've ever had - playing it loud is mandatory y'hear! The flipside pushes us a few hours deeper into the night and moves things into a padded, twilight carousel of sparkling keys and another one of those endlessly cavernous basslines, venturing into a classic breakdown that bring those keys back...it's all about the keys! The Modern Love imprint brings a great release by Claro Intelecto.

Signals
Review: With the first installment in this series already having enjoyed four re-presses in 3 months, warehouse sessions 2 arrives with a twisted show of appreciation from one of the most gifted techno producers anywhere in the world . "Trial & Error" on the A-side is a malfunctioning beast of a track, a filthy modification of house presets rewired with a crushed square bassline and turned into something positively sleazy. By the far the most exuberant and narcotic track ever produced by Mark Stewart and a real mashed up anthem for neon-stripped warehouses and modified bunkers the world over. "Signals" on the flipside applies the same contaminated aesthetic to a more robust techno pattern, a rolling tumble of kick drum and snare mutilated by a metallic screen that squashes the track into a very dark corner, only to be illuminated by patient, distant keys. It takes a lot of confidence to be this restrained, but it works & Volume 2 is a great follow up in Warehouse Session series.

X
Only Yesterday
Review: Hot on the heels of "Warehouse Sessions Volume 2", this 3rd instalment finds Mark Stewart on a mission to head even deeper into the heart of techno with a double-headed session that's as stripped down as it is relentless. "X" on the A-side is a gargantuan chug through a barely contained demented 4/4 spasm, underpinned by distorted stabs and a hollow line in thumping kick drums. It's all fairly restrained until the half-way mark when things suddenly go deep under the influence! A live session of warbling dub stabs fed through a widescreen echo-chamber, low-end psychosis that's just devastating. Where the hell did that come from?? "Only Yesterday" on the flip is a homage to Mr Fingers, a slow, deep, pulsating house classic that utilises the sort of padded bass progression that they just don't make anymore, caressed by pristine hi-hats and very little else, it's not every day you here a sound so full made out of so little.

Hunters Rocket To The Sky
Review: Following on from the frustratingly scarce teaser 12" "Lacan" that sold out in a single afternoon, Mark Stewart is back with his first release for Modern Love available for wider public consumption. A sort of thank you for everyone's patience. Of course, patience is a virtue that the techno community has had to become well versed in over the last couple of years. Patience for the full structure of tracks to emerge. Patience for that barely noticeable narrative that infects only the most developed forms of what has become known as minimal. "Patience" is a masterclass in self restraint and redux, an apt title for the opening track on this perfectly formed EP. It will remind you of warehouse parties in a blurred haze of hindsight, an acid klunk stripped into a fragmented prism of colours - melodic yet utterly determined to stick to its agenda. This is machine music perfectly honed for the body. The flipside is much fuller; pregnant with abandon and fizzing chemicals, a widescreen adaptation of Chicago anthems imbued with a startling effortlessness - a Claro special as some people have already christened it. Mighty.

Thieves
New Dawn
Review: Having just this week aired 20 minutes worth of unreleased warehouse material for a Breezeblock session, Mark Stewart at long last unveils the first in this series of pristine 12"s designed, honed and tweaked for the floor. The Warehouse Sessions will concentrate on Claro's darker edge: minimally constructed, full-bodied, deviant 4/4 variations with the headier end of the warehouse in mind. "Thieves" opens the series with a full-bodied assault on midnight with a dark clunk of deep, padded techno underpinning impossibly widescreen emissions, a relentless attack formation guided by soulful machinery executed through the tightest production imaginable. "New Dawn" on the flip is just gargantuan. A heavy slug of post-industrial genius taking the metallic clunk Monolake are so well known for, slowing things right down and marrying it with the faint ghost of Rhythm & Sound dub echoes leading charge to utter oblivion. This is the most developed materiel from Claro yet, following his own trajectory through a template torn wide-open with an instinctive production style that just seems to be forever developing. Mighty.

Review: The most dense emission from the Deepchord vaults is saved for the final 12" in the "Coldest Season" series. "Aequinoxium" slowly emerges as a rumbling layer of heavy bass pulses and drifting chords - much in the vein of Rhythm & Sound's largely instrumental 12" series. "Winter In Seney" closes the set with a beatless stretch of analogue malfunctioning, banks of synths, effects units and analogue machinery powering down for an emotive, cathartic finish. Check this Modern Love release now.

Review: Produced using nothing but vintage analog equipment - Roland Space Echo, Echoplex, Korg tape delay, vintage signal processors, noise generators, Sequential Circuits 8 bit samplers and numerous analog synthesizers - "The Coldest Season" project goes back to the heady days of Berlin-based proto dub/techno variations, recorded and produced in Detroit and Chicago. Three of the worlds most important Techno cities colliding to form a whole that perfectly bridges the gap between The Motor City's emotive arrangements, The Windy city's percussive robustness, and Berlin's life-altering Basic Channel continuum. Deep Chord brings an absolutely amazing release on Modern Love.

Review: Deep Chord is the pseudonym of Detroit's Rod Modell - one of the most noted producers operating in the dub-infused aftermath of the Basic Channel axis and all its myriad offshoots. Following an extended hiatus, Rod Modell has re-wired his studio and is once again receiving great acclaim for his low-end techno variations. Chicago's Steve Hitchell is a long-time Deep Chord cohort and a noted producer in his own right - most notably under the Soultek moniker. Hitchell and Modell have recently started to produce material together and this release is their much anticipated debut under the Echospace umbrella. Produced using nothing but vintage analog equipment: Roland Space Echo, Echoplex, Korg tape delay, vintage signal processors, noise generators, Sequential Circuits 8 bit samplers and numerous analog synthesizers - "The Coldest Season" project goes back to the heady days of Berlin-based proto dub/techno variations, recorded and produced in Detroit and Chicago. "The Coldest Season" will be presented in a series of four 12" releases, followed by a CD release.

Review: * DEMDIKE REPRESS * Lancashire dwellers Demdike Stare revel in surrounding themselves in a haunting mysticism so it's no surprise to read the title of the second of three LPs for release on Modern Love in 2010 is a reference to the 'Tibetan Book Of The Dead'. Across half a dozen tracks and 45 minutes, "Liberation Through Hearing" infuses your senses with a sense of deep seated paranoia via the narcotic, strung out dubbed grooves and usage of unsettling samples. "Regolith" in particular brings to mind the music that soundtracks survival horror videogame Silent Hill with the patter of sonic interference soon dominated by abrasive metallic textures. On the flip "The Stars Are Moving" approaches a concession to techno aesthetics as electro pulses gradually rise from the sonic mist. This is expanded upon on "Bardo Thodol", the only track with percussion at its core. The gently undulating chords that rise from the eleven minutes of white noise that make up "Matilda's Dream" makes for a transcendental ending to this fascinating, hypnotic release.

Review: Since first emerging under the name Demdike Stare on Modern Love back in 2009, Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker's project has provided listeners with a series of self-consciously dark and mysterious albums inspired by the occult (Demdike was a notorious 17th century witch). This fifth full-length - a double CD, no less - is as formidably creepy, intense and bloodthirsty as their previous outings and provides alternate takes -along with bonus material - of the tracks that appeared previously on a series of equally collectable twelve inches. While there are moments of fleeting beauty - see the gentle "Shades", bubbling echo-techno of "Metamorphasis" or sleepy ambience of "All This Is Ours (Sunrise)" - these merely serve to highlight the horror-fixated darkness and gothic soundscapes that abound throughout. Genuinely chilling, all told.

Review: Modern Love delivers this luxuriously packaged compendium of work from Demdike Stare rounding up the duo's trilogy of previously vinyl only albums and throwing in some forty minutes of unreleased material. Demdike Stare operate in a eerie sonic atmosphere that defies categorisation but proves to be absolutely absorbing. Taking in a vast array of musical sources - from library recordings to obscure Eastern International music to ancient electronic recordings - and absorbing, twisting and mangling them through a surfeit of analogue material to the point where the resulting sound becomes distinctly their own. Additionally the somewhat tongue in cheek mysticism and spectral aura that Demdike Stare intentionally created around these albums combine with the droney, low bass frequencies and haunting textures to deliver something much closer to witch house than the majority of bands who surround themselves in obscure symbolism would hope. At over 160 minutes in length, this is music to lose yourself in completely and is a must for fans of the group.

Review: Arriving in strictly limited quantities and covered in suitably cryptic artwork from Andy Votel, Modern Love present the final instalment in Demdike Stare's trilogy of albums for 2010. "Voices Of Dust" begins in menacing fashion with the atonal drone vacuum of "Black Sun" and the Lancastrian techno experimentalists retain this air of underlying peril throughout, as anyone who's indulged in their previous output would expect. Metallic bass frequencies underpin the phased mindfuck discotheque of "Hashshashin Chant" whilst "Repository Of Light" delivers an interlude from the album's overwhelming claustrophobia via some gloriously shimmering Detroit style futurist synth work. Your senses are sucked right back into the viscous machine created mist as "Rain & Shame" unfolds and seeps into the rhythmically off kilter fuzzed bass textures of "Desert Ascetic". The final plunge towards the darkness of finality that begins with the surrealist mist of distant horns on "Leptonic Master" and reaches the run out groove with the coarse sonic grains of "A Tale Of Sand" ultimately leaves you with the thrilling sensation of craving more.

Rathe (6:23)
Patchwork (6:29)
Review: Is this the end? It seems like this seventh edition of Demdike Stare's dancefloor brutalising Testpressing series is the final installment "for the time being", bringing to a close a rather vicious succession of rugged club killers and noisy experimental tracks dating back to 2013. If this is indeed the final one, Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker end Testpressing proceedings on a high note with a two track 12" that's up there with the best in the series. Up top "Rathe" begins in heavenly fashion before a sea of white noise brings about a left turn into AFX style distorted half step jungle - wait for the break at the 3 minute mark! It's matched by "Patchwork" which sees a deftly sliced vocal sample from a Wookie classic bounced around the channels as Canty and Whittaker draw vicious lines in the ground with a razor sharp 2 step pattern.

Fail
Null Results
Review: When we thought it was all over, Demdike Stare come through with one last serving for the year of their ongoing Test Pressing series . Like the three previous TPs, TP004 continues the theme of one track dance, one track noise. The noise-side this time features the horror intensified steel hum and pressured hiss of "Fail" which sounds like a piston-fuelled (and filled) factory that at any moment is about to burst from too much heat. The Dance-side, "Null Results", sees the pair venture away from the housier rendition they provided on TP03, looking to jungle loops for inspiration this time - which they slice, dice, silence, and warp into a new-school banger - which in a way is like a minimalists reduction of Miles' "Lebensform".

Grows Without Bound
Primitive Equations
Review: Demdike Stare inaugurated the Testpressing series on Modern Love last month as a means of showcasing the duo's most "untamed" creations, though "unhinged" would probably be closer to the mark". Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty return here with a second entry which proves to be equally good. "Grows Without Bound" combines what sounds like a supercharged organ with rumbling sub bass and scratchy, stumbling beats in the distance, but it's "Primitive Equation" that offers the standout track. Once again revisiting the jungle template present on the last Testpressing record, the duo construct something that could be mistaken for a track from 2562 or T++ and probably sounds devastating rumbling out of the bass bins.

Eulogy
Dyslogy
Review: The Test Pressing series has seen the Mancunian duo of Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty continue to move away from the meditative, dark, sample based collages of previous Demdike Stare material. Whereas the previous two Test Pressing releases were attempts to combine noise and industrial elements with the rhythmic framework of jungle, much in the vein 2562 or T++, Number #003 in the series shows a slight change in sonic direction. Described as a "devotional to the soul of deep Chicago and Detroit house", "Eulogy" takes its cues from the classic square wave basslines of Mr Fingers and Terrence Dixon, with swelling synths anchored by weighty kick drums. A return to significantly darker pastures can be found on the flip where crunchy breakbeats, monolithic, dystopian chords and drill bit synth pulses hide the relatively modest tempo of "Dyslogy".

"Procrastination" offers the duo's take on grime, with gunshot-style snares ringing out across a bleak backdrop of noise and decays, while "Past Majesty" sounds very much like the post-punk influenced techno Powell has been making of late, with throbbing bass, searing guitar and off-kilter drums coming on like a juggernaut.

Frontin'
Review: Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker make a swift return to the Testpressing series with a sixth installment arriving just a month after the excellent TP#5. The superbly titled "40 Years Under The Cosh" finds the Demdike pair wedged in the punishing crawlspace between Detroit Techno and vintage grime for six thrilling mind bending minutes, with the track gradually falling apart at the seams as the middle of the track draws close. Fans of both Pharrell Williams and Demdike Stare (there must be one or two) will probably express disappointment that "Frontin" isn't a cover of the big hatted fella's noughties hit; instead it's a brutal exercise in lurching industrial wave that will fry the brain cells of unsuspecting individuals.

Review: The new album Wonderland is Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty's first LP as Demdike Stare since 2012's Elemental and arrives a year on after the completion of their Testpressing EP series for Modern Love. Starting out with the the demonic and guttural body basher "Curzon" where you know right away that this album will be one wild ride. "Hardnoise" goes from industrial noise to sub bass heavy techno to blissful IDM over its epic 10 minute duration. Elsewhere, "Sourcer" tackles a mangled form of late '90s techstep while the beautiful closer "Overstaying" is a glorious exercise in hypnotism that sits somewhere between minimal techno and deconstructed electro.

Review: For fans of Demdike Stare's brand of intense techno and dystopian late night electronica, this edition of new album Wonderland is something of an early Christmas present. You see, it not only includes their new full-length in all its percussive, pleasingly funky glory - a reflection of their move towards more club-friendly pastures, even if their love of experimental noise and dark, wayward electronics remains intact - but also two discs of material from the duo's acclaimed, previously vinyl-only Testpressings series of white label 12" singles. Given that these works, which gleefully mutilate the rhythm structures of techno, dancehall, UK garage and IDM, hugely influenced the creation of Wonderland, it's a move that makes perfect sense.

Review: Since Demdike Stare released their last album in 2012, the world seems to have got altogether darker and more shocking. It certainly seems a fitting time for the Lancastrian duo to return with their sixth full length. Wonderland naturally boasts a number of typically clandestine, pagan outings - see the dense, industrial influenced "Curzon", fearlessly distorted "Hardnoise" and mutant jungle fuzziness of "Sourcer" - but also moments of frenzied funk and quiet contemplation. In the latter category you'll find sublime album closer "Overstaying", where shimmering synth melodies and ghostly chords rub shoulders with elastic bass and skittish drum machine percussion. However dark and bleak things may seem, there's always hope, even in the intensely unsettling world of Demdike Stare.
