Funk
Hatif (3:30)
Kidi Bloom (4:31)
Review: Fresh instrumental Afro-funk-disco magic from LA-based quartet The Bombillas, once again emerging from their post-LP slumber with the complementary 'Kidi Bloom' and 'Hatif'. In no rush to release again since 2022's 'Nac Nac/Senebi', this new 12" is suitably taciturn and unaffected; the A-sider riffs on distinctive Arabian folkloric music styles, its brand of funk closing in on a harmonic minor key, as David Michael Celia and Tyler Nuffer digitally riffle the electric keys and vintage-amped guitar respectively. 'Kidi Bloom' is a similar pre-car-chase scene complement, bringing cluing vibraphones and mod-wheeled synth work to a relative slow jam.

Funk
Together (3:43)
Movin' On (2:42)
Review: Jungle Fire's 'Together' was released digitally in July 2020. It is s superb version of a Ray Barretto Latin funk classic that has been performed as part of the Jungle Fire live show for a while now so you might well be familiar if you have caught them play anywhere. It is usually an instrumental but for this version they hook up with the talented Jamie Allensworth to sing and he brings a message that unites any crowd. The record is released in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign with "every cent generated on our end by this recording going to support the movement."

Heavy Manners (3:00)
Heavy Manners (version) (3:01)
Review: 'Heavy Manners,' is a groovy summer jam 7" from Germany's premier reggae duo, Marcus I and aDUBta. This collaboration, influenced by US Soul and classic Jamaican Reggae, brings the Studio One vibe of the 1960s to life. Following their debut album Cut A Wire Showcase (2023), they now deliver this upbeat, flying-cymbal track that's sure to set any dancefloor on fire. On Side-2, a minimalist riddim "Version," perfect for DJs craving that authentic vibe. After nearly two decades as a reggae drummer, aDUBta has fully embraced the sounds of 60s to early 80s reggae, gaining international recognition with Sounds From The Attic. Marcus I's soulful vocals and sharp songwriting shine throughout, recorded at aDUBta's Attic Roots Studio. The single, mixed analogue on a Tascam 388, is primed for sound systems worldwide, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this dynamic reggae team.

Soul
Left Behind (feat Jamie Allensworth) (4:12)
I Want You (feat Terin Ector & Jamie Allensworth) (4:36)
Review: Mestizo Beat have been making moves on the West Coast scene for a while now and this new one is sure to help them go to the next level. It expands on the core sound the band have championed so far with cues from Roy Ayers, Isaac Hayes, George Benson, Eric B and Rakim all stitched into their own particular brand of soul. 'Left Behind' (feat Jamie Allensworth) has breezy, soulful vocals and harmonious jazz keys while 'I Want You' (feat Terin Ector & Jamie Allensworth) is a cover of Marvin Gaye's 'I Want You' with its swooning horns and vintage synthesizer strings soaring over the top.

Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get (3:30)
Review: Once again Night Owls have cooked up a soul-stirring 45 with classic grooves and reggae rhythms from some of LA's finest. Dan Ubick of The Lions, Connie Price and the Keystones is on the guitar, Blake Colie plays drums, The Lions man Dave Wilder slaps the bass and Roger Rivas of The Aggrolites plays organ and piano. "Gossip" is a swaggering tune with sunny percussion and organic riffs that whip up all the right feelings. "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" is another happy, bubbly tune with fine vocal acrobatics and a rhythm section that you never want to stop playing.

You Got To Be A Man (feat Sy Smith) (3:09)
Gimme Little Sign (feat Chris Dowd) (2:43)
Review: LA's finest, Night Owls, are back to stir up your soul once more with their reggae licked grooves and big vocal turns. This latest and greatest 45 is another fine ripple in the new wave of that West Coast inspired sound from this mini supergroup of talented musicians. 'You Got To Be A Man' (feat Sy Smith) swaggers on a classic riddim with oodles of echo and reverb fleshing it out with the butter vocals melt your heart up top. Flip it over for the more uptempo and driving - in dubwise terms, at least - 'Gimme Little Sign' (feat Chris Dowd) with big trilling horns and hits to die for.

Let's Stay Together (feat Destani Wolf) (3:32)
Let's Stay Together (version) (3:33)
Review: Over the last few years, Night Owls -a group comprising members of various other Los Angeles-based outfits - have developed a signature sound that puts a roots reggae and rocksteady spin on the classic 1960s soul sound. They're at it again here, joining forces with sometime Pharcyde collaborator Destani Wolf for a wonderfully sweet, sun-kissed rocksteady cover of Reverend Al Green classic 'Let's Stay Together'. The superb A-side vocal version comes backed by a suitably authentic flipside dub that comes laden with space echo, dub-wise drop-outs and a Melodica solo so good that it could have been provided by Augustus Pablo himself. In a word: ace!

Funk
Me & Baby Brother (feat Kevin Sandbloom) (3:17)
School Girl Crush (feat Kendra Morris) (4:46)
Review: Night Owls know exactly how to nail a signature Jamaican sound that comes laden with classic funk and soul. They do that again on this super 7" which lands at the tail end of summer but is sure to be bringing plenty of warmth into your life for months to come. First up they cover War's classic tune 'Me and Baby Brother' with blue-eyed soul singer Kevin Sandbloom. Add in guitar player Dan Ubick's lush licks and you have a real gem. Flip it over for the more slow, fat-bottomed and dubby swagger of The Average White Band's 'School Boy Crush' which has been renamed 'School Girl Crush.' The vocal is red hot, and the groove to die for.

Funk
Cramp Your Style (feat N'Dea Davenport) (2:25)
Your Old Standby (feat Trish Toledo) (2:53)
Review: A double-barrelled shot of classic soul and Motown, LA-based soul flippers Night Owls are back again after their LP earlier this year with their first 45 transforming songs with their unique Jamaican flair. Side A steals the show off the bat, with 'Cramp Your Style' pricking up hip-hop fans' ears as the groundwork for Cypress Hill's 'Real Estate'. N'Dea Davenport's vocals are silky smooth against the grooving instrumental - you can't help but smile. Side B's 'Your Old Standby' is a slower, more emotional affair with vocals from Trish Toledo that hearken back to the original in magical fashion.

Review: Night Owls are well known and loved amongst funk fans and dropped a superb album not so long ago. But they don't rest on their laurels and instead come back with more goodness in 7" form here on the F Spot label. 'I Only Have Eyes For You' (feat Chris Dowd & Tippa Lee) is more of their heavy-hitting funk and soul goodness with some uplifting vocal work next to the sound signature rhythms. The back side of this limited edition 45rpm is taken up by the equally fresh 'Live And Let Live', this time featuring Miles Tackett.

Put On Train (3:18)
Review: F-Spot Records straight outta Los Angeles is all about highlighting a new wave of West Coast inspired sounds. This latest slice of 7" gold is a heavily dub and reggae inspired roller with the vocals from Shugie Otis re-sung by John Arthur Bigham and repackaged on a more loose limbed rhythm with oodles of reverb. 'Put On Train' is a reggae-fied version of Gene Harris and The Three Sounds instrumental of the same name. It lengthens out the drum work and lay down some natty chords that tumble freely and bring the sunshine in.

Groovin' (feat Jamie Allensworth) (3:11)
Groovin' (instrumental) (2:57)
Review: Last December, Los Angeles combo Night Owls debuted on F Spot Records with a genuine 21st century rarity: a reggae-soul cover of Donny Hathaway's 'This Christmas', featuring lead vocals from the mighty Durand Jones. For their fourth single, they've decided to deliver another cover, this time of Young Rascals' cut 'Groovin'. Their sun-soaked, rocksteady style reggae take is apparently a homage to Willie Mitchell's cover (as sampled by Wu-Tang Clan), and features Jungle Fire man Jamie Allensworth singing majestically over a jaunty rhythm track rich in heady Hammond organ sounds and toasty bass. The band's brilliant arrangement and tight-but-languid performance naturally comes to the fore on the B-side Instrumental Mix.

If You Let Me (feat Jr Thomas & The Volcanos) (3:20)
Review: Straight from Producer Dan Ubick's Lions Den Studio, Night Owls presents two re-imagined soul classics here. First, soul sensation Eli 'Paperboy' Reed tackles Ray Charles' 'You Don't Know Me.' Ubick sought someone to infuse soul into the song once sung by 'The Genius' himself, finding it in Reed, whose journey from Massachusetts to Mississippi's Delta shaped his soulful style. On Side B, Jr Thomas & The Volcanos bring their Rocksteady flair to Eddie Kendricks' 'If You Let Me,' paying homage to Jamaican legend Winston Riley. Night Owls' versions inject new life into these classics, ready to ignite the dance floor with their infectious grooves.

LA troupe Night Owls comprises members of The Lions and The Aggrolites and, for this special cover version double-A debut, the vocal fire of Breakestra's Afrodyete on "Break In Every Road". A warm, feel-good twist on the Betty Harris classic, there's a rootsy Jamaican twist to the groove while Afrodyete does the business on the top. Ain't That Loving You (feat Chris Murray) (3:33)

Review: Night Owls are coming off the back of their best-selling tune yet and follow-up 'Ain't That Loving You' (feat. Chris Murray) backed with 'Are You Lonely For Me, Baby' (feat. Malik Moore) is likely to be just as hot. It finds the Night Owls stepping up their game as they flip Johnnie Taylor's super sweet Stax classic ballad into a delightful dancehall anthem. On the flip is another version of a 1966 classic with all-new bass and bounce, a tough rhythm and deep vocal delivery from Malik Moore of The Lions and Ocean 11 association.

Hercules (feat Alex Desert & The Lions) (4:08)
Tell It Like It Is (feat Asdru Sierra) (2:53)
Review: Night Owls return with a second wave of 7"s, delivering a fresh take on two classics by Aaron Neville under the featherlight sway of infamous record producer Allen Touissant. Reimagining 'Hercules' alongside 'Tell It Like It Is', the duo once again poke at the seams of the cine-funk sound, enlisting powerhouse collaborators - Alex Desert & The Lions, and vocalist Asdru Sierra - on both sides of this blistering 45. The B especially brims with a busty bonhomie on 'Tell It Like It Is', rewiring the OG song's current flows to a throughput of smooth reggae and cumbia.

Got That Will (3:12)
Got That Dub (version) (3:25)
Review: Night Owls are back with a fresh take on Lee Moses' 1970s cut Got That Will, transforming the soul classic into a dancehall-inspired banger. Dan Ubick leads the production, bringing in powerhouse vocalist Gina Murrell and the tight rhythm section of Wilder, Colie, and Rivas to infuse the track with new life. As if that wasn't enough, Kingston's Ranking Joe adds his signature toasting, giving the track an extra layer of authenticity and drive. The B-side, Got That Dub, takes things deeper with Roger Rivas on the mix, dialing up the echo and delay to create a spaced-out, dubbed-up version. With steady radio play on BBC Radio 6 and KCRW, this release is already making waves. DJs and collectors will want to act fastithis record is primed for late-night sound system sets and is sure to fly off the shelves.

Say I Do (feat John Arthur Bigham) (4:56)
Island Hustle (3:22)
Review: The origins of the Rhythm Roots Allstars lie in a spot called Temple Bar, a club in LA which was a hub for the hottest underground funk and soul in the city in the late 90s. The Allstars were the house band, and the collective has remained strong through the decades, co-writing Grammy-winning And The Anonymous Nobody by De La Soul and recording with the likes of Aloe Blacc and Ghostface Killah. It's hard to believe then that this is the band's first solo release, but here we are, and they don't disappoint. On the A side, 'Say I Do' brings a warm R&B flavour with Fishbone's John Arthur Bigham on vocals, while the flip throws down a searing hot instrumental which speaks to the Allstars' years of experience turning out the club.

The onetime house band for the Rhythm Room at Temple Bar - a popular Los Angeles club that served as the epicentre for underground urban funk, soul, and international music for over a decade - they receive a just reissue here. 'Say I Do' is a sunny homage to marriage and longstanding partnership, and features vocals from guest singer John Arthur Bingham. The instrumental 'Island Hustle', meanwhile, features a calypso-style steel pan laid to a jazz-funky bedding, performed by the allstars' inhouse percussionist Davey Chegwidden.

Review: Having bubbled away in the LA funk scene since forming in 2015, the trio comprising drummer Michael Duffy, organist Frank Carey and guitarist Matt Hornbeck finally unleash their debut recording and it's a serious mission of funk intent. "Get To Steppin'" fulfils its motivational title with rapid boogaloo pace and wild jazz fusion in both the organ and guitar leads. "Blinded" is more of a classic instrumental funk piece with yet more wily organ adventures taking the lead over an insanely tight groove. Blinding.
