Review: Animal Collective are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their influential album Sung Tongs by releasing Sung Tongs Live at the Theatre at Ace Hotel, capturing the complete set from their 2018 performance of it in full Tracks like 'Leaf House,' 'Winters Love,' and 'College' channel the essence of American folk akin to the Simon & Garfunkel, with the pure yet imperfect harmonies of the Beach Boys. Tare and Bear's vocal interplay evokes the ambitions of 'Cabinessence' and Smiley Smile, but unlike Brian Wilson's grand symphonies, Animal Collective keeps things dynamic and untethered. 'Who Could Win a Rabbit' bursts with playful energy, its acoustic guitar setting off a joyous race of harmonies and chaotic, exuberant vocals. The reflective 'The Softest Voice' layers delicate guitar lines, with whispering harmonies suggesting a serenade to forest spirits. 'We Tigers' brings a ritualistic feel, leading to impressionistic ballads like 'Mouth Wooed Her,' filled with coos and birdcalls. Sung Tongs is a vibrant, unpredictable journey of chance meetings, celebratory dances, and fleeting epiphaniesia captivating and joyous exploration. The live album offers a fresh take on a beloved classic, highlighting the band's dynamic performance.

Review: Animal Collective return with album number eight, their first for Domino. "Strawberry Jam" was recorded by Scott Colburn in Tucson, Arizona. It's an amazing record, which should finally mark some sort of crossover for them. It bears all of their unique and charming hallmarks but with vocals and melody much more to the foreground.

Review: One of Britain's best-loved and most accomplished pop-rock bands are back with another highly anticipated album. The Car is epic on every level with its adventurously designed tunes, lots of grand orchestration and plenty of easy-to-enjoy and enigmatic songs of love but also doubt. The Sheffield outfit's seventh long player was written by frontman Turner at his home in LA and mixes indie and psychedelic rock, baroque, glam and orchestral rock with production largely taken care of by frequent collaborator James Ford. The title is a nod to the fact that there are many references to cars throughout the lyrics.

Katie Stelmanis, the spectrally-voiced and ferociously-talented figure behind maverick electro-pop outfit Austra, set herself the not inconsiderable target of setting out 'a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia' with this third album, yet against all odds she's done a sterling job of marrying the icy binary chill of technology with a very human frailty to emerge with a defiant and emotionally affecting statement of intent. Indelible melody and Stelmanis' extraordinary tones may dominate, yet the sonic landscapes here - equally bracing and beatific - have the rare effect of making the listener hopeful for what 2017 has in store.

Review: There's no denying Domino know how to knock 'em down hard. Having already delivered long players from Cat Power, Bob Moses and Villagers just this year alone, they are now turning to Devonte Hynes who is no stranger to the label either. Negro Swan provides the London artist with his fourth studio album which in large draws from the lost souls of '90s pop. It's hard not to hear Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and R&B four pieces all at once in tracks like "Saint", and even "Charcoal Baby", while there's even suggestion of Will Powers' spoken charm in the words to "Family". More Contemporary touches of genre are there in the emotional, beat pop of tracks like "Chewing Gum" and "Nappy Wonder" without forgetting the tropes of neo soul in "Holy Will". A grand album wrapped up in the angel wings of Blood Orange's queer poetic.

Review: On his latest LP, Will Oldham aka. Bonnie "Prince" Billy dares to work with a producer for the second time: David "Ferg" Ferguson of Johnny Cash and Sturgill Simpson fame, whose attentive hand guides each of these idling songs through to their sinister, diminished conclusions. Led by the ingenious 'London May' - a lolloping Americana concept piece, illustrating the ostensibly lonely, isolated, suicidally ideating (but ultimately not) persona that is BPB - this sombre record ends up a difficult-to-pin one, touching on themes of self-loss, death and devilish deals. Unlike many other records by Oldham, this lilac lilter hears the convalescence of several composers' and vocalists' voices, reflecting a newfound collaborative opening for the artist, perhaps breaking from a common interpretation of his music as solipsistic.

Review: Buzzcocks may have become known as purveyors of a marriage of the energetically youthful and the poppily addictive, yet their original incarnation - with cadaverous malcontent Howard Devoto at the helm - was a far more murky and spiky proposition. This live record, compromising early punk rock blueprints that would end up on the legendary Spiral Scratch EP as well as previously bootleg-only efforts that chronicle not only a little-known Captain Beefheart influence but a tinny, rough-hewn and thoroughly addictive sound that's the very essence of punk rock - one that sounds no less vital four decades on.

Review: Domino Records embark on an ambitious reissues double-bill of John Cale's earliest solo records. Here - third to his debut record after his self-excision from the Velvet Underground, Vintage Violence (1970) (to which Cale was infamously disparaging in his later years, deriding his performance on the work as "masked" behind a disingenuous imperative to prove he could still write songs) and second to his Academy In Peril (1972) - comes his third and much better loved LP, Paris 1919. Released in 1973, Cale has regained ground here, still flexing a wonderful talent for songcraft, yet also an entirely new orchestral chamber pop direction, easily foiling the unflappable cool cat persona depicted on the front cover, and eschewing the dark experimentalism of his preceding album. Where it's not plush with string movements, Paris 1919 brims with softly-strung guitar arpeggiations and electric piano hooks, its placid easy listening approach much befitting of the Paris Peace Conference, and other related postwar drives to armistice, that bestruck the public imagination during the earliest post-war 20th Century.

Review: It's hard to feel 'meh' about John Cale. In fact, it's impossible. The Welsh musician, Velvet Underground alumni and composer has given us 18 studio albums, including June 2024's Poptical Illusion, and there's nary a misstep in the lot. His latest plays out like a warm bath full of dreamy optimism, a follow up to the highly collaborative affair, Mercy, here we see the super-talent adjust his focus and fly out alone to prove the point. And prove it he does. Across 12 weird and unarguably wonderful tracks, Cale manages to defy genres, flitting between chamber punk and beach pop, theatrical croon-dom and syrupy downtempo. While there are dark-er moods, 'Funkball The Brewster', for example, on the whole this is smile-inducing, if bat-shit crazy stuff, from start to finish.

In November 2022, Cat Power took the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall and delivered a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. Held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966 - but long known as the “Royal Albert Hall Concert” due to a mislabeled bootleg - the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock n' roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy. Now captured on the live album Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, Marshall’s spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero’s imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.

Review: In 2022, Cat Power, otherwise known as singer/songwriter/producer Chan Marshall, fully recreated Bob Dylan's legendary 1966 show at the Royal Albert Hall. In turn, Dylan's 1966 concert was the culmination of one of the most consequential tours in the history of rock & roll - when he electrified his songs, and by doing so enraged his devoted audience, who just had to catch up. Power's recollection of Dylan's radical re-rendering, now pressed to vinyl, hears her perform the songs in the same order as Dylan himself that night: the first half of the show being an acoustic set, not long before being joined by her electric band for the second half.

Review: The ninth album by English folk singer Shirley Collins, Archangel Hill, comes as a collection of traditional songs from England, Ireland, Scotland and America. Collins breathes fresh, reanimatory, magic vocal dust into the songs, with her distinctively breathy voice once more imbuing a collective energy into the English folk revival styles of the 1960s and 1970s... and now, perhaps, the 2020s. It's her debut for Domino, who describe Collins as one of the most important voices in the folk revival scene. Naturally, this means Collins' selections reflect her deep knowledge of folk song, with some tracks like 'Hares On The Mountain' widely known among the public, while others are sourced from close personal friends and relatives.

Review: Fat Dog's debut album, WOOF., is a frenetic and electrifying trip through a kaleidoscope of genres, encapsulating electro-punk, rock'n'roll snarls, techno soundscapes, industrial-pop and rave euphoria. Frontman Joe Love and synth player Chris Hughes lead the charge, delivering a sonic assault that defies categorisation. The album's tracks, like 'King Of The Slugs' and 'Running,' pulsate with runaway rave intensity, showing the band's knack for combining dance-punk energy with klezmer-tinged interludes and broken-down grandeur. While WOOF. offers few moments of reprieve, its relentless fervor and wracked nerves keep listeners hooked from start to finish. With their rapid ascent and zany hybrid sound, Fat Dog emerges as a captivating force in London's art-rock scene, leaving audiences both fascinated and puzzled by their enigmatic charm.

Review: Billed as the most vital and sophisticated creation of their career yet, Fat White Family return with Forgiveness Is Yours. As if to reaffirm that forgiveness begins with forgiving oneself, the South London band's fourth album comes with limited fanfare (they hardly need it), perhaps owing to the fact that this is a record said to have pushed the band to "the limits of their very existence", entailing a consistent "will to create even when catastrophes keep happening". Forgive oneself for what, though? Torpor, apparently; from 'Bullet Of Dignity' to 'What's That You Say', this slick and suggestive indie album is a testament to finding the correct harmony in chaos, and waking up from our half-dazes to find an active truth.

Review: Franz Ferdinand made a perfect debut album. The Glasgow indie rockers could have called it a day way back then and we'd still be listening to them now. But somehow they've retained their magic and are now onto their sixth studio album and 20th year as a band. Alex Kapranos and co. teamed up with the same producer as they had for their fourth album, Right Words, Right Action (Mark Ralph) and that spawned some absolute bangers, so expectations are high for this. Despite having to adjust to new members in the group - it's the first album to feature drummer Audrey Tait and guitarist Dino Bardot - they've come up with the goods on the singles. 'Night Or Day' has the contagious Franz Ferdinand groove that gets crowds bouncing at festivals. And 'Audacious' is perfect for the holiday season - majestic, lush and full of galvanising lyrical sentiments that can't help but unite people. Surely, this album will go to number one.

Review: Supergroups that look perfect on paper can often misfire in practice, which makes it both a relief and a revelation that this meeting of minds between the Glaswegian dance-pop freaks and the legendary glam progenitors hits the spot so spectacularly. With both acts playing to their strengths, and sharing ideas in effusive fashion, FFS is a collection of indelible songs that never let their artful campery and arch histrionics triumph over melody and fresh invention. As over the top in its flamboyance as one would expect this collaboration to be, this inspired collision of circumstances has more than enough substance to match its style.

Review: Released back in 2003, Rounds was the third LP from Kieran Hebden as Four Tet and perhaps the first long player that widely established him as a pioneering voice within electronic music. Though it doesn't feel like a decade since it was released, Domino celebrate the album's tenth anniversary in requisite fashion here, reissuing it in double LP format and slipping in a CD of Four Tet performing live in Copenhagen in 2004. Listening back now, it's easy to understand why Rounds is viewed as an early classic in the Four Tet canon, transferring his love for free jazz records to a beat template that's more palatable on the ear (Fact pickers might want to know that Hebden recently revealed to Pitchfork the LP was made entirely from samples) "She Moves She" still sounds absolutely haunting too!

Review: "I think we all have fears within us and fears that we confront in our life at different times ... and how we react to those fears is how we earn who we really are," Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos told Apple Music's Hanuman Welch in an interview about The Humans of Fear, its catalysts and sources of inspiration. Sonically, this is typically bombastic and almost relentlessly upbeat, following in the footsteps of the Glasgow group's established sound. Which has, of course, changed over the years. So while we once had a thoroughbred indie rock band named after a racehorse and Archduke Ferdinand, over the last decade or two they have evolved into a far more electronic and synth-heavy outfit. On The Humans, Ferdinand seem to have measured the distance betwixt the two with more accuracy than ever, sticking their flag in the surface of a perfectly realised middle ground.

Review: Scottish indie stalwarts Franz Ferdinand thrust onto the scene back in 2004 seeking to antidote the then bad-boy aesthetic of groups like The Libertines with smart, suave 'music to dance to'. Fourteen years on and following a slight lineup change, their objective doesn't appear to have changed with their fifth album 'Always Ascending'. Produced by Philippe Zdar of famed Parisian duo Cassius - it's a slick, tight record that's doused in their trademark off-kilter panache. Over forty energetic minutes, there's a lot to dig into; the ballad 'The Academy Award' and art-pop oddball 'Huck & Jim' let Alex Kapranos' dry wit come to the fore, the infectious funk-channeling chorus on 'Finally' sounds like a dip into 60's pop, while 'Feel The Love Go' is vintage Franz Ferdinand. 'Always Ascending' sees Franz Ferdinand full of charm, reinvigorated, and perfectly comfortable in no longer needing to prove anything.

Review: Even in the early days of Portishead it was apparent Beth Gibbons wouldn't just play the game and become an omnipresent star trotting out an album a year. Her reclusive nature adds to the enigma around her arresting voice, and it's allowed an album like 2002's Out Of Season to mature beautifully. It also means there's an undeniable thrill around the arrival of a new project, which takes shape here as Lives Outgrown. The lead single 'Floating On A Moment' sets the tone, sounding absolutely like the Gibbons we all know and love while heading into new territory, melding indie rock, folky romanticism and subtle sonic tweaks that assure us the wait has been worth it. This heavyweight vinyl addition comes with a booklet, as well as a download code.

Review: Beth Gibbons releases her debut solo album Lives Outgrown. Notably containing ten songs that were in total written over the course of ten years, the overarching mood is one of saying farewell and musing on the bittersweetness of loss. The English singer and notable Portishead member's solo efforts often operate with this affect, but Gibbons' latest is of special import, given the length of time over which these songs were crafted and occasionally performed over the years. As demonstrated by lead track 'Floating On A Moment', the palette is soft and reflective, hitting only the softest dynamic notes, as Gibbons sings of unique lifetime journeys and a dealt-with sense of friends suffering being left behind.

Review: Five years ago, Portishead front woman Beth Gibbons joined forces with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony Number 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs)" at the National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.

Review: Julia Holter's sixth album, Something In The Room She Moves, is a dreamlike exploration of complexity and transformability, featuring flowing harmonic universes and fluid, water-like melodies. Her vocal register, reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux, Nico, or Kate Bush, possesses a matchstick intensity, rekindling its own flame through the conversation in her voice. Holter's diaphragm shifts between instruments, creating a continuum of fretless electric bass pitches counterpointing with gliding vocal melodies. Glissing Yamaha CS-60 adds a touch of experimentalism, while her production choices and arrangements maintain a sense of simplicity and refinement. Holter's singing resonates in somatic frequencies, evoking a deep connection between mind and body. With its liquid, ever-changing nature, 'Something In The Room She Moves' invites listeners to immerse themselves in a world of sound that is both ethereal and profoundly human.

Review: Julia Holter's sixth album Something in the Room She Moves might just be the Los Angeles songwriter's best work. In the past she has often explored memory and dreamlike futures but on this new outing she is very much more in the moment throughout. She explains herself hat "There's a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies." Musically the album mixes fretless electric bass pitches with her unique vocal melodies. The recognisable sounds of the Yamaha CS-60 interweave with more organic wind instruments and add up to a fluid, watery sound that flows smooth and carries you along with it amongst the gorgeous harmonies.

Review: At this stage in his career, Jon Hopkins should be able to do whatever the hell he likes. After proving his synaesthetic abilities throughout the 2010s - with masterpieces like 'Light Through The Veins' and his last album 'Singularity'- it's clear this climactic electronica artist knows no bounds. Now he debuts a new full guided meditation-style LP documenting his ketamine-fulled revelations realised in a remote Ecuadorian cave. Relinquishing beats and drum sounds, this is a fully ambient affair from Hopkins, and routinely features soothing, sampled vocal snippets from the late yogi and guru Baba Ram Daas, as well as collabs with producer and psychedelic ceremony guide East Forest.

Review: Much has been made of Jon Hopkins' intentions with his new album Music For Psychedelic Therapy, but whether you're a devoted tripper or a sober psychonaut his new album has plenty to offer. Of course Hopkins has more than proved himself over the years as a phenomenal producer and composer, but here he's replaced his brooding cinematic techscapes for blissful ambience draped in rich overtones and gently drifting patterns of melody and rhythm. It's wholly invigorating and relaxing, clearly designed to soothe the listener in stark contrast to the shock and awe he normally inspires amongst his considerable fan base.

Review: Having taken time out to travel the world and experience new things (including psychedelic substances in California), John Hopkins planned to make Singularity, his ninth album, "a sonic ecosystem that starts and ends on the same note". He soon got frustrated by these limitations, so instead just laid down a fluid and hazy album that combines his usual luscious, ambient electronics with a variety of sparse, heavy and off-kilter rhythms. While undeniably laidback in parts, the album also boasts a number of foreboding techno workouts and uses a wider palette of instrumental sounds than we've come to expect (including some fine strings and his own intricate piano playing). The resultant set is rather impressive, all told, and while not quite a "sonic ecosystem", it's certainly an enjoyable journey.

Review: Jon Hopkins' fourth album Immunity is a bona fide classic that is now a full ten years old. To celebrate the milestone, it has been newly remastered for this special reissue. Listening back now reminds you just what a confident and adventurous record this was - a creative trip deep inside Hopkins' mind that brought totters everything he had done and learned up to that point. The focus was firmly on the dancefloor but still, the tracks come with plenty of emotional nuances, from sad piano motifs to stirring choral drones but shifting rhythms and real-world sound effects that brought the whole thing to life.

Review: With Ritual, electronica mastermind Jon Hopkins follows up his storied meditation-aid LP, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, for a return to the sublime uplifts that characterised his establishing sound. Somehow, Hopkins says of his latest full-length, "I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm composing. I don't know where it's coming from, and I don't know where it's going, nor does it seem to matter. I just know when it is finished." Such remarkable humility sits in in stark contrast to the deep grandeur of the record, which refreshingly seems to have been made without overconscious intent; Hopkins' describes his approach to the album as a simple matter of creation, without too much second-guessing or reasoning after the fact. This would seem to counteract Psychedelic Therapy's interest in self-reflection and personal enlightenment; Ritual, as we glean from the title, is more action-oriented, pursuing the many epic pilgrimages and blue beyonds that Hopkins was first known to have embarked upon.

Review: At this point in his career, it seems that classically trained pianist come electronica visionary Jon Hopkins can do no wrong. Whether we're thinking of his unmistakable all-time great LP Immunity, or his more recent inward-bound journeys into a trippy serial panacea, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, the musician, in Domino's own words, is an established auteur, capable of casting a whole range of dark sonorous arts perhaps only the most storied audio wizards can cast. His latest record, Ritual, is the latest utterance to escape the Hopkins grimoire; staying true to the adage that a real magician simply does not reveal their secrets, Hopkins is deliberately cryptic about the meaning of Ritual, except for the fact that his music-making process is itself a ritual. Humbly, he insists "I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm composing". Well, from the various sublime, epiphanic, master-warlock's evocations heard across this record, it sure doesn't sound like it!

Review: Hot Chip continue to occupy a unique space in British music. Yet despite their standing as a bunch of polymaths just as at home with pure pop as experimental diversions, what continues to truly separate them from all or any contemporaries is a rich melancholy to their sound, and it's this which looms pleasantly large on 'Why Make Sense'. The songwriting of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard has never sounded sharper, not their beat-driven yet tastefully spare sound more addictive. Now as ever, no-one can reconcile human emotion and machine-like rhythm in quite the same fashion as this maverick outfit.

Review: Hot Chip jumped ship yet again, releasing their fifth studio album In Our Heads via the esteemed UK imprint Domino Recordings. The eleven track album was self produced by the band members (along with some behind the boards help from respected studio engineer/producer Mark Ralph) and recorded in London, presumably in the spare time between the various band members other musical commitments that include 2 Bears, New Build and About Group. It stands up alongside their previous long players, with certified pop gems littered among a heady mix of synthy electo and downtempo romantic jams such as the irrepressible "Look At Where We Are".

'Ash & Ice' however, shows a band not afraid to add substance to their style - for every needle-sharp floor-filler like the ESG-sampling 'Siberian NIghts', there's a curveball like the heartfelt Stonesy ballad 'That Love', which has the raw bite of Cat Power. Crucially, fourteen years into their life as a band, this duo still sound unafraid to get their claws out.

Review: More than merely an awaybreak for its members Alex Turner and Miles Kane, The Last Shadow Puppets proved themselves on their debut 'Age Of The Understatement' to be masters of a distinctly '60s-styled world of glamour and arresting artifice, their clever wordplay and swooning harmonies combining with ornate arrangements to create a sound as redolent of black-and-white kitchen sink dramas as the trials and tribulations of the twenty-first century everyday. This long-awaited sequel, meanwhile - reuniting them with string arranger Owen Pallett - displays that whereas their careers may have moved in markedly different directions in the interim, their wry and wordily ditties when united display an enviable chemistry and magnetic charm.

Review: Released in the first year of the pandemic, Ela Minus' first major breakthrough came in 2020, when Domino put out her debut record, Acts of Rebellion. Evidently the label was happy with the results, which saw the young Colombian electronic star carve out a corner of the global scene for herself. Five years on and we're back with the follow up. Reassuringly, everything and nothing has changed. Improvised jazz meets techno meets schoolyard Brat pop, trance, EDM and synth. Citing Kraftwerk as one of her key influences, you can also hear plenty of Daft Punk in here, and a little Charli XCX to boot. All of which might sound a little opportunistic, if she didn't radiate authenticity and already have a decade-long history of putting out futuristic and fun beats.

Review: Colombian producer and singer Ela Minus expands her sound on this new album, which is a bold follow-up to her 2020 debut Acts of Rebellion. While her first long player felt like an intimate late-night club reverie, this sophomore effort is introspective yet vast while revealing more of Ela as both an artist and person. It's an album about becoming and exploring self-discovery, resilience and the path forward after breaking. Across ten terrific tracks that have been mixed by Marta Salogni and mastered by Heba Kadry, Ela blends pop accessibility with experimental finesse while weaving radiant choruses into imaginative, intricate sonics. A great work that shows evolution while not abandoning her signature sounds.

Review: Nico's Marble Index was the first album to establish the German musician's home in the avant-garde; the story of the fashion model turned "legitimate" artist is as old as time, yet is rarely told today. In contrast to her first album, Chelsea Girl, which consisted almost entirely of pop chansons, Nico's sophomore LP here tracks nicely with her working introduction to John Cale in his harmonium era, drawing inspiration primarily from modern European classical music, not three-minute hookcraft. Long out of print, this slow-burner of a critical classic now hears a worthy reissue via Domino.

Review: As part of a new looking back on German art rocker Nico's esteemed career by the indie label Domino, Desertshore chronologically follows The Marble Index, and is her third album, following the prior project's establishing her as an avant-garde artist with one foot in the mainstream, in stark defiance of the the prejudiced poo-poohs that followed her first (baroque pop) album, Chelsea Girl. Desertshore is more of a reconciliation of her prior two projects, bringing back the initial western pop sensibility while now firmly basking in a newfound weirdness-and-she-knows-it. From the opening dark waves of 'Janitor Of Lunacy' to the piano-balladic injection of sadness that is 'Afraid', this is another avant-garde masterpiece by the musician, never justifiably passed over.

Review: Real Estate's sixth full-length album Daniel was recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree at RCA Studio A, in Nashville with GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves). In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested Danielmsimply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements' Tim? Possibly. Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely.

With a rich history of putting out music as the bass player in Talk Talk, Drift Code for Domino presents Webb with a fully loaded debut solo album. There's plenty of blues and jazzed laced throughout the LP to be appreciated alongside country western motifs that make you want to fashion yourself an underbite and chew on a some wheat grass. Slightly gospel, wavering croons and storytelling are to be heard amidst the charming clunky-clink of a salon's piano keys rattled in a room of smokey vocals. Something to be savoured.

Review: Offering up more debuts and dreams is Domino once again with the release of a first album by Los Angeles singer-songwriter SASAMI. The LP, said to be inspired in large by Bruce Vs Chocolate Cake from the 1996 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda, sees SASAMI turn in a variety of solo, synthy and sultry numbers, running a gauntlet between subtle punk, electronic pop, and funky, danceable New York indie. "Morning Comes" is perhaps the best example of the latter, sharing a sweet cadence with Stereolab and Nurse With Wound's classic "Simple Headphone Mind". Killer reference. With the amount of uber cool solo vocalists out there, SASAMI's unpretentious debut adds a fresh minty breath to the mix.

Review: A reissue of material that Pete Shelley originally released in 1981, not long after the Buzzcocks' first split. It may be his second solo album, but with his first album - Sky Yen - being an arty experimental record, it's this album that spawned his first ever solo single. Giving a glimpse into the ridiculous censorship at the time, the single, 'Homosapien', was banned by the BBC, who interpreted a line in the track to be a sexually explicit reference to gay sex. Sonically, the album marks a humungous shift from the punk sound that Shelley gatecrashed the mainstream with in the Buzzcocks in the mid-70s. This is a highly electro-pop record and had producer Martin Rushent, who was also working with The Human League on the epoch-defining Dare album at the time, help shape the forward-thinking sound it became.

Review: Given the sharp left-turn that Shelley took with his solo career after leaving The Buzzcocks, it's sort of irrelevant if you're a fan of his seminal punk band or not. This second solo album - now reissued - is an entirely different kettle of fish. Whilst the 80s is famed for a lot of innocuous releases, due to the industry flush with cash, this stellar electro pop album - originally released in 1983 - stands the test of time: it's more experimental and artful than the run-of-the-mill chart-botherers of the time. This is a record that conveys Shelley's ability to write timeless, direct, hard-hitting singles ('Telephone Operator') and veer into more sprawling and adventurous arrangements ('What Was Heaven?') with the fluency of a true auteur. Producer Martin Rushent is due his flowers here, too, as it was his and Shelley's evolved embrace of innovative studio techniques during these sessions that set the bar for The Human League and other classic acts around the scene at the time.

Review: Conversation-starters to say the least, London troupe Sorry have made a name for themselves for both the right and wrong reasons. Though far from a parody, their work is informed - and in no small part - by a number of esteemed acts and artists who have earned a place for themselves in the pantheons of music. They also have an air of unarguable affectation about them, causing friction with the press, and a reputation for approaching live shows with lackadaisical spirit. Nevertheless, while channeling everyone from Oasis to Tears For Fears on this debut album, the five piece have managed to deliver something truly original, remarkable and infinitely repeatable. Melding indie, electronic pop, jazz and the avant-garde, the result is as cool as cool could be but that doesn't ever overshadow the obvious quality. And for that we need to pay some real respect.

Review: Conor O'Brien's sixth album under the Villagers moniker, That Golden Time, takes a departure from the band-oriented sound of its predecessor, Fever Dreams. Instead, O'Brien delivers a collection of vulnerable and intimate solo-based songs, recorded mostly in his own apartment. The album's title reflects its warm and nostalgic atmosphere, while also touching on the tension between romanticism and realism in life. Continuing his tradition of crafting melodies that captivate and arrangements that subtly enhance the emotional depth of his lyrics, O'Brien invites listeners into his world of hopes, fears, and dreams expressed through richly absorbing poetry. Despite the intimate nature of the album, O'Brien collaborates with guest musicians, including Planxty's Donal Lunny, to add depth and texture to the sonic landscape. O'Brien's artistry and ability to create music that resonates deeply with listeners is also a journey into the heart and mind of one of Ireland's most talented singer-songwriters.

Review: Wet Leg is the Grammy-winning Isle of Wight band founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, whose 'Chaise Longue' single swept the world before it, followed by a hugely successful debut album in 2022. Here they make a bold return with their second album, Moisturizer, reflecting a tighter, more confident sound honed and shaped by practically non-stop touring. "We were just kind of having fun and exploring," Chambers has said of the process while Teasdale explains, "We focussed on: Is this going to be fun to play live?" Written during an intense creative burst in a remote countryside house, Moisturizer explores themes of obsession and consuming love with raw and visceral guitars, pounding drums and plenty of the outfit's trademark edgy wit.

Review: Hailing from the Isle of Wight and steadily building in momentum via a run of stunning singles, Wet Leg are making their much anticipated breakthrough with their debut album on Domino. The duo hit a note between the brooding post punk and new wave romanticism and a spikier pop streak which should find them winning hearts and minds all over festival season. 'Chaise Longue', 'Wet Dream' and 'Too Late Now' have been doing the rounds since the girls signed to Domino in 2021, and it only takes one listen to know they're going to be huge. Razor sharp hooks, singalong choruses and a droll sense of humour are all conspiring to make Wet Leg your new favourite band.
