Review: This iconic debut album from James Mason is reissued here, and any self-respecting fan of jazz, funk or soul in any of their forms should consider picking up a copy if they haven't already. Not to be confused with actor, a one-time member of Roy Ayers' Ubiquity band, Mason's output is a testament to quality over quantity i he didn't release much, but everything that did see the light of day is worth its weight in gold. Bursting with intention, consciousness and masterful musicality, Rhythm of Life is nothing short of a tour de force. From the searing vocals, psychedelic synths and propulsive rhythm section of floor-fillers like 'Sweet Power, Your Embrace' and 'Free', to the heartfelt messaging of 'Good Thing' and the feel-good charm of 'Slick City', the album never misses a beat i and still sounds as fresh today as it did on its original release in 1977.

On their second album they presented a sound which could be sultry and fierce in equal measure, and their legacy was assured when Erykah Badu famously sampled 'Dreamflower' for her equally classic 'Didn't Cha Know' from Mama's Gun. The whole album is a wonder to behold, and this repress on Chiaroscuro should bring a deep dig back in reach for many a jazz lover.

Review: A New York based fusion band that recorded during the '70s, Tarika Blue came to the attention of a more contemporary audience when singer Erykah Badu sampled them on "Didn't Cha Know." In 1974 Tarika Blue were signed to New York jazz label, Chiaroscuro Records, founded by producer Hank O'Neal. Their first album, The Blue Path, was all instrumental of soaring jazz funk, a finely crafted weapon in the armory of any self-respecting DJ or collector of jazz and funk.'The Blue Path' is regarded as one of the best jazz funk albums and it's not hard to hear why. The bravura and muscular dexterity found in the best jazz artists, balanced with the groove and funk of the finest gritty bands from across the tracks, this album is a stone cold killer from the opening note to the closing fade out.
