Dischetto I
Dischetto I (180 gram vinyl LP)
Cat: DGTL 003. Rel: 27 Nov 24
Oulala (3:34)
Allez Ouste (5:07)
Corsica Express/Nuit Squanche De Solid State (Tascam dub) (6:03)
Le Dernier Des Cristaux (4:29)
Jam De Confiture Pernelle Janvier (4:36)
Alain Des Cloches (4:02)
Breuil Voisinage (3:10)
Review: The Digital Finesse label was founded as an outlet for two artists, Jimmy Batt and Blinkdus Dischetto. This release is the latter's first on the imprint and it's a biggie: a debut album that does a terrific job in showcasing his hybrid style. That naturally comes to the fore on opener 'Oulala', a chunky blend of synth-heavy nu-disco, French touch funkiness and the more picturesque early deep house works of Pepe Bradock. Squelchy acid bass, cut-up vocal snippets and sun-bright melodies mark out 'Allez Ouste', while 'Corsica Express/Nuit Squanche De Solid State (Tascam Dub)' cannily combines ambient and acid house. Elsewhere, he beefs up the beats ('Le Dernier Des Cristaux'), displays his mastery of 1990s style IDM ( 'Alain Des Cloches') and successfully whips out his MPC (the boogie-tastic 'Breuil Voisinage').

Profundo
Profundo (green marbled vinyl LP)
Cat: ROYAL 058. Rel: 02 Apr 25
Profundo (5:57)
Hold On (5:57)
I Don't Know Why (4:43)
What We Used To Be (6:02)
Takes Time (6:12)
Overwhelmed (5:24)
Review: There is no stopping the prodigious producer Felipe Gordon who turns out huge amounts of work, without ever sacrificing artistry. He brings soul and jazz to his deep house sounds and this is the fourth time he has landed on Clone. 'Profundo' gets things underway with singing synths and shuffling deep beats, then 'Hold On' centres escapist and sunny melodies that take you to the Med. Elsewhere 'I Don't Know Why' brings spoken word vocals to lavish house and 'Takes Time' oozes sex appeal with its steamy sax notes and gentle piano tinkles. All of these cuts are laden with great musicality that puts many producers to shame.

Review: Alex "Landy" Hill was the producer for and founding member of the 80s r&b and disco group Timex Social Club. This gem is the result of a deep dive into his archives and is an unreleased 1990s Bay Area demo project. The collection features nine original tracks created in collaboration with vocalist Jordana and songwriter John Pruitt all written and recorded in Hill's modest apartment studio. As you would expect of him, the tunes capture the raw, soulful energy of the era's underground r&b and funk scene with a nice lo-fi edge and plenty of analogue sounds from the time. Long tucked away on ageing cassette tapes, the recordings have now been carefully restored by PPU to offer a great look at Hill's post-Timex era.

Review: Master compilers ZYX outta Germany have pulled off another masterstroke here. The fourth edition of their
80s Electro Tracks Vinyl Edition collection comes on wax and is packed with gems you will know, and some you won't. All of these tunes very much defined the 80s electro era in their own way and plenty have all kept their edge and energy 40 years on. From catchy synth-pop ditties to the more edgy and experimental beats via several infectious rhythms and retro vibes, this is a time capsule back to this most wonderful decade.

Review: The seventh volume of Cosmic Discotheque continues its exploration of 1970s disco with aplomb. This series is all about uncovering rare and overlooked gems from the era and in particular, this edition spans Afro-disco, funk, space disco and Middle Eastern-inspired dance music. The label does a fine job of bringing forgotten singles back to life here and saves you the (albeit pleasurably) effort of digging through flea markets for hidden treasures. With classic disco elements all featuring like drum breaks, soaring violins and vintage synths this collection delivers an authentic sound perfect for any party and full of the thrill of discovery.
