It's Gonna Get Better
Review: Genesis' 1983 release begins with an ominous whisper, 'Mama', where Phil Collins channels something unnerving-part confession, part menace-set against sparse, mechanical drum programming. The track crescendos into a searing release, its layers of synths and percussion driving home a deep unease. If 'Mama' is the ghost in the machine, 'That's All' is the human touch: deceptively light, yet built on intricate layers of melody and rhythm that reveal the band's refined craftsmanship. The album balances pop accessibility with progressive roots. 'Second Home by the Sea', a two-part suite, showcases their knack for storytelling through instrumental drama, while 'Illegal Alien' mixes humour with commentary in a way that still provokes discussion. For fans of lush, introspective ballads, 'Taking It All Too Hard' offers a poignant standout moment. This reissue captures Genesis at a pivotal point, straddling their experimental past and chart-topping future. A must-have for fans exploring the evolution of a genre-defining band.

Review: Released in 1977, Crosby, Stills & Nash marked a significant evolution in the trio's sound. A blend of sophisticated pop arrangements, signature vocal harmonies, and polished instrumentation - all tamed in post by the Midas touch of one Bill Halverson - made for one of the era's finest albums; it notably became a benchmark for sound quality. It's therefore become something of a holy grail and acid test for remasterers and reissuers, many of whom have tried their hand at it. A 2017 Rhino cut had a fair go, but this Analogue Productions version is a no less exceptional enhancement, presenting a bolder, more vivid presentation to Rhino's comparatively relaxed feel. Standout tracks include Crosby's ' Shadow Captain' and Stills' 'See The Changes', and the resigned but resolute 'Fair Game'.

Abandoned Luncheonette

Review: After the relative commercial un-success of their debut Whole Oats, Hall & Oates relocated to the Big Apple to record 1973's Abandoned Luncheonette, marking the start of their New York chapter, which perhaps artistically expressed their own debutant dismay. Produced by Arif Mardin, and in a rightly disgruntled fashion, the duo sought to distance themselves from commercial formulae, honing a unique sound that would later prove non-fungible. Keeping close to the pair's American roots, Mardin played a crucial role, and under his guidance, H&O would call the production process a vital learning experience. The second side of the record is notable for its guitarist Chris Bond's Beatles-inspired ideas, which he would later express as a regretful choice, as it deviated substantially from H&O's vision. But this is an overall "magical" record, as expressed by the duo themselves.

Review: 1975 marked a defining moment in the Alice Cooper character arc, with the release of Welcome to My Nightmare, a concept album reiterating the Kiss member's theatricality, storytelling skills, and knack for all things phantasmagoric. From 'Welcome to My Nightmare', listeners are plunged into a dark fantastical nether-realm, with added orchestration lending Cooper's craft a Burtonesque grim like never before. In collaboration with longtime producer Bob Ezrin, Cooper impelled many memorable spirits here, naturally forming the sonic backbone of the eponymous, accompanying concert film (1975) produced by David Winter. The album's breakout hit, 'Only Women Bleed', reached the Top 5 and played a major role in propelling Welcome to My Nightmare to multi-platinum status.

Review: This 1972 masterpiece opens with 'Watcher of the Skies,' an expansive track that marries atmospheric keyboards and quirky rhythmic bombast with Gabriel's distinct voice, while its centrepiece. 'Supper's Ready,' stretches over 20 minutes, shifting effortlessly between prog grandeur and delicate folk. The album's blend of complex structures and emotional depth is evident in 'Get 'Em Out by Friday,' which combines sharp social commentary with intricate time signatures. Throughout, the band proves their mastery of dynamics, using their progressive rock sound to push boundaries while remaining grounded in emotional resonance. A timeless exploration of musical freedom.

Review: Genesis' 1976 album represents a pivotal moment for the band, blending intricate jazz/fusion elements with their signature progressive rock style. The SACD release highlights the nuanced interplay among members, delivering stunning clarity to Phil Collins' dynamic drumming and Mike Rutherford's sophisticated bass lines. Tracks like 'Dance on a Volcano' showcase the band's energy, with Steve Hackett's guitar evoking vivid imagery against Tony Banks' layered keyboards. 'Entangled' and 'Mad Man Moon' stand out for their delicate, introspective tones, featuring acoustic guitars and emotive vocals from Collins, whose voice brings a heartfelt authenticity to the material. The intricate use of mellotron, especially on 'Los Endos' and the latter half of 'Entangled,' adds a lush, choral atmosphere. 'Ripples' emerges as one of Genesis' finest moments, its nostalgic beauty underscored by shimmering 12-string guitars and majestic instrumental passages. Meanwhile, 'Squonk' delivers a rhythmic punch, marking a turning point where Collins proved his mettle as both drummer and vocalist. With its varied compositions and instrumental brilliance, the album bridges the theatrical style of earlier works with a more cohesive and music-centric approach. The SACD release ensures these performances resonate more vibrantly than ever, cementing its place as one of the band's definitive achievements.

Review: Genesis took a significant leap forward with the addition of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett to the lineup and this album showcases a perfect blend of bombastic keyboards, intricate melodies and imaginative storytelling. Opening with 'The Musical Box', a mini rock opera that fuses nursery rhyme influences with progressive rock grandeur, the album establishes itself as a classic. The heavy and menacing 'The Return of the Giant Hogweed' exemplifies the band's creative audacity, while 'For Absent Friends' offers a brief, gentle respite led by Collins' emotive vocals. 'Seven Stones' features one of the most iconic Mellotron solos, while 'The Fountain of Salmacis' presents a mythical tale with symphonic depth. 'Harold the Barrel' provides a brief, humorous interlude and 'Harlequin' offers a quaint but somewhat disposable moment. The record's strength lies in its balance of light and dark, with moments of beauty and power seamlessly intertwined. The album captures the band's transition from their early sound to a more ambitious, epic style, laying the groundwork for future masterpieces. It remains a cornerstone of progressive rock, showcasing Genesis at their imaginative best.

Review: Abacab remains an album that pulses with the energy of the early 80s, yet it carries a weight of reflection that anchors it beyond its time. The opening track sets a brisk pace, its driving rhythm section cutting through the dense layers of synths with a sense of urgency. 'No Reply at All' stands as one of the album's high points, with a funk-infused groove that is both unexpected and irresistible. As the album progresses, 'Dodo' takes a darker turn, blending prog-rock sensibilities with electronic textures, showing the band's ability to evolve while retaining their distinctive voice. Throughout, there's a sense of experimentationia willingness to push boundaries, to step away from their previous sound while staying true to their roots. Abacab showcases a band in transition, seamlessly fusing their past with the future they were stepping into.

Review: Lost since the 1970s, the original tapes for Lightnin' Hopkins raw blues thunderclap from 1965 have finally rematerialised, resulting in the freshly remastered version you hear here. Arrestingly tall, tongue-in-cheek tales from the vulgar songster are put on fully nude display from the jump, with 'I'm Going To Build A Heaven Of My Own' narrating make-do haven fantasies of offering a harem of women a "home", 'I'm A Crawlin' Black Snake' hearing the lyricist personify himself as an amoral, black serpent, and 'Lonesome Graveyard' flashing a rare moment of lugubriousness and grief. A special salvaging from redeemed tape, we must insist: let yourself be struck, and don't wear rubber soles going into this one...

Review: Van Halen's 1984 remains a seminal record in the history of rock music, marking a significant pivot in both the band's sound and its broader influence on the genre. Released in a year crowded with iconic albums from heavyweights like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi, 1984 stood out with its innovative use of synthesisers, a bold move for a band traditionally known for its hard-hitting guitar-driven rock. This sonic shift, spearheaded by Eddie Van Halen's exploration of keyboards, made the album both controversial and groundbreaking, with 'Jump' becoming a defining anthem of the era. The album kicks off with the brief, synth-driven title track that transitions seamlessly into 'Jump,' a song that introduced a new layer of polish to Van Halen's sound without sacrificing the energy or fun that defined their earlier work. Despite initial resistance from die-hard fans, 'Jump' became the band's most commercially successful song, balancing Eddie's keyboard experimentation with David Lee Roth's larger-than-life vocals. Following 'Jump', the album dives back into more familiar territory with tracks like 'Panama' and 'Hot For Teacher', showcasing the signature blistering guitar riffs and infectious rhythms that put Van Halen on the map. 'Panama' is an explosive rocker, with crunching guitars and Roth's unmistakable charisma, while 'Hot For Teacher' opens with one of the most recognizable drum intros in rock history. The band's chemistry is on full display, combining wild guitar solos, booming bass lines, and energetic vocals. Deeper cuts like 'Top Jimmy' and 'Drop Dead Legs'' are often overshadowed by the big singles but still highlight the band's dynamic range. 'I'll Wait', with its atmospheric production and introspective tone, stands as one of the more unique entries in the Van Halen catalog, blending ghostly vocal effects with the band's pop sensibilities. Produced by Ted Templeman, 1984 strikes a delicate balance between the more polished sound of mainstream rock and the band's rough, raw origins. The album's commercial success, aided by MTV and the rise of music videos, cemented Van Halen's place in the pantheon of rock greats. Even 40 years after its release, 1984 sounds fresh, an enduring testament to Van Halen's ability to innovate without losing their core identity. Whether it's the flashy guitar solos, Roth's exuberant vocal performances, or the bold use of synthrs, 1984 captures a band at the peak of their powers, pushing boundaries while staying true to their rock 'n' roll spirit.
