  1. Point Of Entry
  2. Arabian Prince
Review: Expect juke-like elements, syncopated rhythms and repeated vocal loops spinning around a bass-laden soundscape in Goldffinch's techno-influenced piece "Point Of Entry". The Belgian duo have been impressing us with their output and this is no exception. "Point Of Entry" is all gloopy SFX, firm, hissing beats and a heavy atmosphere with sub bass pressure from below and the dizzying, disorientating vocal element confusing the senses from all directions. "Arabian Prince" is another electrotech gem, with sumptuous soundscape, deftly placed beats, throbbing bass and ominous vocal coming in and out of focus. Well worth checking out!

  3. Archaic Line (Graphics remix)
Review: On this release from the fast rising UK imprint Deadplate it's the fresh garage-infused house sound of Artifact that gets an airing, already championed by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs and Dark Sky. "Archaic Line" showcases his knack for clattering Blawan-inspired percussion, offset by an atmospheric haze of foggy chords. "Deserted" meanwhile is characterised by its deep, resonating bassline, and stretched out synths which sound like a bleaker, more greyed-out take on eski grime. Topping it off is a remix of the title track from hotly-tipped young producer Graphics, who turns the hesitant, stuttering original into a straightened out house monster, complete with deep melody and bass that turns the track into a tune going to present-day London via 80s Chicago.

Review: This cheekily titled release from the emergent Guy Gormley shows a more sensitive side to UK Funky, going for emotive vocals and bombastic chord progressions. Rather than coming off like a saccharine pop approach, the real skill in the Enchante approach is how he manages to conjure up a wistful 80s melancholia. The samples come thick and fast, especially on "Body N Mind", which rips unabashedly into some vintage R Kelly. It's no mean feat to be both emotionally weighted and tongue-in-cheek in one record but somehow this little rascal has done it!

Review: The forward thinking and far reaching Belgian imprint Silverback have impressed in their short lifespan to date, slipping out killer drops from the likes of Damu and Nguzunguzu. Overseen by Ultravid and the Voltron collective of DJs (whose collection of sweaters should worry Legowelt) from their Ghent HQ, the label reaches it tenth release in little over a year and they expand operations to celebrate with their first vinyl drop. Polish producer The Phantom is at the helm with four tracks that veer between genre classifications with aplomb. The A Side pits the sweat-filled house antics of the piano heavy "Ceremony" alongside the neck snapping aquacrunk thizzurp of "Gothic" whilst the flip has what Teki Latex refers to as BokBokian grime ("Voyeur") vying for your attentions with the stunningly inventive "Collosus". An illuminating release from all involved!

  2. J Kenzo - "Let It Move"
  3. Tickles - "Da Growier"
Review: Some previously digital only releases from Roska's Kicks & Snares imprint get a well deserved vinyl pressing on the great 12" release. On the A-Side is Terror Danjah's remix of Roska's "Without It", the original's restrained approach, with its simple snare pattern and dramatic strings, into somewhat darker places, replacing the original's UK funky template with a jungle vibe, complete with twisting, acidic bassline. On the B-Side, J Kenzo's "Let It Move" has a positively electro-breaks feel, with the stretched-wide synths punching away over heavily compressed beats. Finally, Tickles' incendiary track "Da Growler" is built around a particularly low and rumbling bass drone and pitched down vocal snippets which gives the track its name, whilst delicate percussion gives it a light, swinging rhythm. A fine package from one of UK Funky's most exciting labels.
