Review: There was one irrepressible Chicago club act that refused to be replaced by any DJ's sound system. Soul septet Maxx Traxx (and Third Rail before them) commanded a scene unto themselves in the early 80s, playing live five-plus nights a week somewhere in the 312. Their two LPs, both recorded in 1982, are a sheer energy-ride almost too explosive to be captured by studio tape. And yet these two stone-cold classics would remain unanswered by a city, as it moved determinedly toward the motorik sound of house. Review: Charlie Megira was an Israeli legend in his own strange universe, drawing understandable parallels with The Cramps for his affinity for unhinged 50s rockabilly sounds. However Megira very much did his own thing, and this was no pastiche of olden days but a sincere communication from the bleeding heart of rock n' roll. On his debut album, faithfully repressed here by Numero Group, Da Abtomatic Meisterzinger Mambo Chic there's an almost hauntological quality to the strung out instrumentals, all tremolo twang and undead reverb, which can't help but take you right into the identity of this charismatic and ultimately tragic icon from another dimension.

Review: Israeli guitarist Charlie Megira has an eclectic palette, with his music blending every influence from 50s trash rock, garage, surf, and goth. 'The Hefker Girl' is a new album, coinciding with a recent reissue from his back catalogue, 'Da Abtomatic Meisterzinger Mambo Chic' - an LP which ironizes the neoliberal ethos of postwar America. This one, by contrast, charts Megira's collaborative jams with fellow Israeli instrumentalist Michal Kahan, and is a more earnest, heads-down affair. Expect reverb-drenched new wave, 80s tropes and talent on the guitar beyond common comprehension.
