Review: There is an awful lot of heat packed into this 10" from Room In The Sky, with six new tracks backed by the in-house Room In The Sky Riddim Force on an original called 'Fletchers Land'. Jah Walton aka Joseph Cotton opens up with 'Ganja Man' which pays homage to the weed smokers over fat drums. Goody Gap's 'I Smoke Weed' is another ode to the magical green herb and Michael 'Megahbass' Fletcher then steps up with a more stripped back and percussive dub. Ras Ranger, Ed Cubitt & Kodjovi Kush then feature on a trio of B-side gems.

Review: Burning Sounds pay tribute to some of reggae's most crucial DJs with this new album The Magnificent 7. It is packed with artists inspired by the fundamental elements of Rastafarianism and they all speak loudly of the virtues of "living upright in those dread times." Jah Walton - later known as Joseph Cotton - kicks off with the positive vibrations of 'The Seed You Sow' before Big Youth gets deeper and darker. A brace of I-Roy jams roll on fat bass lines and King Sighta also appears twice with his natty vocals and percussive rhythms amongst a bunch of other superb sounds from the likes of Natty Love and Sister Sheron.

Review: If you encountered the 2019 album, Essaka Hoisa, Waqwaq Kingdom's inimitable style will already be familiar. For those who never did, the outfit comprises Shigeru Ishihara aka DJ Scotch Egg and Kiki Hitomi (ex-King Midas Sound), which should give some clues as to where influences are coming from on this, their first outing since the aforementioned obscure masterpiece. Dokkoisho follows a similar line, marrying elements of 8-bit techno, African polyrhythms, contemporary electronica, dancehall, and traditional Japanese folk. Sometimes, although not always, it almost feels like it's happening all at once, like opener 'Positive Sound'. Although that doesn't mean sacrificing coherency or quality. In other moments, things are more focused, for example 'Positive Sound', which opts to strip things back wonderfully to offer a lunging, hypnotic, drum-first workout.

Review: Kiki Hitomi and Shigeru Ishihara first developed WaqWaq Kingdom as a psychedelic affair with percussionist Andrea Belfi, but with 2019 album Essaka Hoisa they ploughed on alone and created a distinctive, maximalist sound drawing on their respective strengths. Hitomi is a captivating story-teller who can tease a whole cast of characters from her vocal delivery, and Ishihara has a hyperactive approach to production which can render footwork, breakcore, hyper pop, traditional Japanese folk music, hip-hop and much more as bit parts in his vivid tapestries. Drawing on their heritage and making the most out-there modernist music intensely personal in the same beat, Essaka Hoisa sounds like nothing else you've ever heard, and should serve as a perfect primer for a new album from WaqWaq Kingdom in September 2023.

Review: DJ Vadim's Feel Up Vol 2 was, we're told, inspired by things as different and unusual as Nassau, Covid and Grace Jones. It is an album that he lured himself into when the world shut down during Covid and has resulted in a vibrant record that mixes up dub, hip-hop and reggae. It is said to reflect the "tropical music festival" he created in his mind while in lockdown and brings pop, soul and African influences to the fore. Review: U Brown was a key part of the roots and lovers rock scene of the 80s and his standout 1983 album Jam It Tonight had many a great hit. No Stoppin' This Music is a compilation of the best bits from it, all cut at Channel One with the Roots Radics. It's a great snapshot of peak-era Brown with cuts like 'Reggae Gone International' a celebratory take of the 'Pick A Dub' rhythm, superb reworks of the 'Take Five' rhythm in the form of 'Blow Mr Hornsman Blow' all sweeping you up on a vibe. A great addition to the racks for any roots lovers.

Review: This classic set from the one and only The Rootsman takes us back to 1999 but has been newly edited and reimagined for this release on Partial. It was originally released on the Third Eye Music Label in 1999 and still hits hard today. There are jungle overtones to the opener 'We Come Rough' which brings the energy to kick off before things sink into a much more heady and psyched-out dub on 'Exodus'. 'To The Foundation' has a jazzy broken beat energy to it and 'Murder On The Orient Express' brings prance percussion and laid-back rhythms. 'Berber Bashment' is the standout on the B-side with its weird and wonderful vocal effects.
