Review: The legend of the late great David Bowie will always live on, particularly with spectral releases like this still appearing on the regular. Rock 'n' Roll Star! vharts Bowie's journey to Ziggy Stardust across no fewer than six CDs and a blue-ray disc that include early home demos, radio sessions and live performances, session recordings, outtakes and alternate versions of tunes from his The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust record. Unreleased gems on the album include an alternate rendition of 'Lady Stardust,' an unheard version of the cherished 'Shadow Man,' and an upbeat interpretation of The Who's 'I Can't Explain.' Interestingly, Bowie later slowed down and covered this for the PIN-UPS album.

Review: David Bowie's Rock 'n' Roll Star! chronicles the boy from Bromley's transformative journey that culminated in his Ziggy Stardust masterpiece. Spanning from February 1971 to the recording of 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, this compilation presents 14 rare and previously unreleased tracks that trace Bowie's artistic metamorphosis. From early Ziggy Session takes to alternative versions and outtakes, this vinyl release offers an intimate glimpse into Bowie's creative process. Each track reveals a different facet of the artist, from the proto-glam of 'Hang On To Yourself' to the soaring balladry of 'Holy Holy.' The album culminates with two iconic performances: an energetic Top Of The Pops rendition of 'Starman' and an alternative version of 'John, I'm Only Dancing' that showcases Bowie's diverse musical talents. Mastered at half-speed, this black vinyl LP provides an immersive and nuanced listening experience.

Review: David Bowie's Diamond Dogs is a seminal album in his career, released in 1974 amid the glam rock era. The album plunges into a dystopian world, with Bowie adopting the persona of Halloween Jack, a feral survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Songs like 'Rebel Rebel' and 'Diamond Dogs' capture the album's raw energy and cynicism, while '1984' reflects Bowie's fascination with George Orwell's novel. Diamond Dogs remains a very important record to Bowie's artistic vision and musical prowess. While many remember the album as the transition period between Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke, the music is equally as memorable. Its themes of alienation, rebellion, and survival continue to resonate with listeners today, making this anniversary edition a valuable addition to any Bowie fan's collection.

Review: Sony records is celebrating 50 years in music in 2024 and coincidentally, Diamond Dogs by David Bowie is also sharing that same timeline. Considered by many, to be the last album released of his glam rock period after disbanding his backup band The Spiders From Mars. With his career direction in some question and longtime guitarist Mick Ronson gone, you have arguably one of the interesting studio albums of his career. Led by the hit 'Rebel Rebel', the album marked a turn for Bowie's songwriting having been inspired by a recent interview he did for Rolling Stone with WIlliam S Burroughs. An admirer of Burroughs' working methods and his 1964 novel Nova Express, Bowie revealed he had begun using Burroughs's "cut-up" technique as a way for inspiration. Ultimately, Diamond Dogs is most important for being the transition point from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke which catapulted Bowie's success in the United States. While only having one modest hit from the album, Diamond Dogs was still a big success. In hindsight, it would also help establish David Bowie as an artist where fans wanted to hear his entire work and not just a single's worth and to Bowie, that showed that his personality was winning over his audience and that his new direction was a good choice.

Review: Amerigo's The Big Payback series finds him bring together some fantasy all stars for his "J.B. and The Soul Mates" tribute concept. Here, James Brown's music is reworked, edited and chopped together with the work of hip hop giant Notorious BIG. It results in speaker blasting, floor filling, ass wiggling jams that mash up all the most iconic verses and choruses from each singer with their most recognisable guitar riffs, drum breaks and samples. It's a colourful collage that is as fun as it is funky.

From the cosmic dread of 'Space Oddity' all the way to the reflective melancholy of 'I Can't Give Everything Away', it's a magnificent testimony to a restless muse that never stopped moving into unchartered territory in search of new adventure. These songs will outlive us all.

Review: This is a much warranted reissue of another gem from the one and only DJ Soopasoul that finds him work his favourite artist, the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. Interestingly, the legendary artist doesn't actually feature all that much on the A-side vocal mix of 'Boston Drop', with Soopasoul limiting his involvement to a few excited yelps, grunts and instructions to the backing band. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, because the musical accompaniment - which can be admired further on the tight, DJ-friendly instrumental take - offers an enticing mixture of hard, sun-bright guitar licks, heavy drum-breaks, handclaps and chunky bass.

Review: 'Heroes' is the David Bowie song even people who aren't fans of David Bowie love. It is also the title of the 12th studio album from the British maverick and one of his most successful. It comes from his famous 70s Berlin period and was written in West Berlin with collaborator Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. Most of the tunes were crafted in the studio, on the spot, with Bowie adding his lyrics later. It was a commercial hit that peaked at number three on the UK albums chart and features one half of conventional rock tunes and one half of more instrumental tracks.

Review: When it comes to mash-ups and unofficial reworks, sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make for the most effective versions. That's certainly the case here, as Soul Mates main man Amerigo Gazaway crafts a fresh slab of funk/hip-hop fusion out of three key elements: a legendary Biggie Smalls acapella, sections lifted from James Brown classic "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and his own head-nodding hip-hop beats. There's not much more to it than that, but the resultant cut, "Big Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag", sounds like a guaranteed dancefloor winner. The A-side version is the full vocal take, while the flipside is a Biggie-free instrumental mix.

The Vibrettes - "Humpty Dump" (part 1) (3:14)
Review: Comapared to many of his contemporaries, James Brown usually left politics well alone but this infectious funky single from 1974 does show shades of the empowering times he was living in, urging his audience to buy land and "save your money like the mob". As well as being well ahead of its time by mentioning rapping, this has everything you want a track from the Godfather of Soul, namely plenty of vocal gymnastics, a drum break that practically screams 'sample me', a rock hard rhythm section and scratchy superfly guitar. Gets our vote! It's backed up by The Vibrettes' 'Humpty Dump', another track whose breakbeat has been heavily plundered but remains vivacious enough to fill most dancefloors in seconds.

Review: Everyone has their favourite Bowie, of course, but Ziggy Stardust has a special place for all and sundry as it marks a noticeable shift in Bowie's sound from Hunky Dory into the fabulous, glam rock 70s era. The classics are so iconic it's almost surreal to consider them in the context of their original presentation on this album, but from 'Starman' to 'Suffragette City' there's no end to the songwriting rock n' roll perfection Bowie achieved here. There's not much more that needs to be said about such an important record, but this newly half-speed remastered version is not to be sniffed at for those who like to hear the music with the best possible fidelity.

This unique live album was recorded in 1990 at the Milton Keynes Bowl and saw the cute singer performing songs on his Sound+Vision tour. This gig was the first leg of his return to Europe so found him full of energy and vitality and turning in superb tunes like 'Rebel Rebel', 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Life on Mars'. All of this was in front of a massive 60,000-plus crowd and it still makes for spine-tingling listening all the years later.

The role of the narrator on the recording was initially offered to both Peter Ustinov and Alec Guinness who both turned it down, before David Bowie agreed to take on the role, supposedly as a Christmas present to his son. On the B-side is another equally as charming piece of recent classical history, Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra as narrated by Hugh Downs.

In 1990 he was taking new paths to rejuvenate his creativity and before he embarked on it fully he headed out on his 1990 Sound+Vision Tour which was to be one final goodbye to many of his most famous back catalogue hits. It's a superb swan song that was captured in all its glory and is now presented here on multicoloured marble vinyl. As far as greatest hits go, it's as great as they get.

It was recorded on his Hours tour to support his 21st studio album of the same name, and was the last he did for the EMI sub-label. It was the first full album to be made available by a major artist for full internet download, a full two weeks before the physical release. The album makes use of many instruments and took Bowie away from electronica. Guitarist Page Hamilton played in the tour as did Mark Plati on lead and rhythm guitars, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass guitar, Sterling Campbell on drums, and Mike Garson on keyboards. This set was recorded in December 1999 at the London Astoria for FM broadcast.

Notes: "One day I blew my nose and half my brains came out." Los Angeles, 1976. David Bowie is holed up in his Bel-Air mansion, drifting into drug-induced paranoia and confusion. Obsessed with black magic and the Holy Grail, he's built an altar in the living room and keeps his fingernail clippings in the fridge. There are occasional trips out to visit his friend Iggy Pop in a mental institution. His latest album is the cocaine-fuelled Station To Station (Bowie: "I know it was recorded in LA because I read it was"), which welds R&B rhythms to lyrics that mix the occult with a yearning for Europe, after three mad years in the New World. Bowie has long been haunted by the angst-ridden, emotional work of the Die Brucke movement and the Expressionists. Berlin is their spiritual home, and after a chaotic world tour, Bowie adopts this city as his new sanctuary. Immediately he sets to work on Low, his own expressionist mood-piece.

Review: James Brown represented what may well be the greatest and yet most contradictory career in the history of pop. His most enduring invention was undoubtedly the music we now know as funk. In the mid-sixties James Brown ignited a pop music revolution with the release of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." He followed through with classics such as "I Got You", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", "Sex Machine", "Super Bad" and many more, effectively bringing the whole thing home. Music shaped by melody gave way to music dominated by rhythm; as dry as it may sound, this in fact marked the birth of modern dance music and would decisively influence generations of music lovers. In 2006 a select group of international producers, musicians and DJs set out to pay tribute to "Soul Brother Number One." For once, "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business" was able to kick back and let others do the work. The result of this project is a collection of fascinating remixes of James Brown's classic hits. The variety of approaches in these reworkings is outstanding; each artist explores his own personal "James Brown cosmos" and leaves behind an exceptional musical fingerprint.

Review: Check out James Brown at the hammond organ on this killer, mostly instrumental funk jam (bar a few grunts and vocal phrases from James himself). An underground hit from 1968 for the northern soul dancers, it was also embraced by the funk fraternity with gusto. On The flip, "I've Got Money" is early funk/R&B from 1962 which has the drummer furiously knocking out the rhythm whilst James screams about how he's rather have some good old fashioned lovin' instead of money. The vocal performance is offset by a big brass section and a throbbing electric bass - way ahead of its time, and quite unique. Classic stuff.

Review: Fifth in the series of previously unreleased James Brown recordings. Side 1 is a previously unreleased long version of 'Can I Get Some Help', which adds an extra 3 minutes of this dancefloor and much sampled classic. Hip hop jams to use this break include Tim Dog on 'F--k Compton', Schooly D on 'Peace To The Nation', Ice T on 'Freedom Of Speech' and Kool G Rap + DJ Polo on 'Play It Cool'. Side 2 is a funk classic recorded in 1967 and previously only issued in much shorter form, in which JB for the first time gives each band member some due and Brown's sign off at the end wasn't just an ad libbed cue for the engineer. He really had to "Open the door and leave": immediately ahead lay advance promotion for the next nights gig ! Faithfully reproduced as it would have looked if it was released in the 60's!

Review: In October 1996, Neil and Pegi Young's Bridge School Benefit concert series was 10 years old and to make the occasion there was a super star studded line up. Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Pearl Jam, Billy Idol, Patti Smith, Pete Townshend, Bonnie Raitt and Cowboy Junkies all played, as did a certain David Bowie. They all played acoustic sets taken from the David Bowie back catalogue and an impromptu version of the Coasters' 'I'm A Hog For You Baby' also feature to a great reception. For the first time ever this is now all featured on vinyl.

It might not be quite as groundbreaking as Dangermouse's "The Grey Album", which expertly blended elements of The Beatles "The White Album" with Jay-Z acapellas, but Amerigo Gazzaway's fusion of James Brown and the Notorious B.I.G is equally as impressive in its own way. His blends of Brown breaks, vocal snippets and instrument samples with hip-hop beats and Biggie Smalls acapellas are uniformly brilliant, expertly crafted, imaginative and undeniably dancefloor-friendly. It's the sort of album that you didn't think that you needed but really do; certainly, any of the 11 tracks will get a rapturous response when unleashed on dancefloors.

Review: Bowie headed out on the worldwide Glass Spider in support of his album Never Let Me Down in May 1987, joined by legendary guitarist Peter Frampton. He show was ambitious even by his own high standards, with theatrical overtones and choreography based around its theme of 'Rock stars vs Reality' and although it was criticised at the time as overblown and pretentious, it's since become recognised as influential. With a mix of current and classic tunes, this album catches Bowie In full concert flow.

This double pack looks back at some of his most iconic TV studio performances, spanning the 70s, 80s and 90s and some of his biggest hits. As well as golden classics like 'Fame', 'Life On Mars?' and 'Ashes To Ashes', there are also special collaborations with Iggy Pop on 'Funtime' and 'Sister Midnight', and with Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias on 'The Man Who Sold The World' and 'Boys Keep Swinging'. A beautifully presented, thoughtfully curated collection of performances from one of the all-time greats.

Review: Limited yellow LP edition of the starman's famed concert appearance at the Convention Center Arena in Dallas, 1978, as part of his 'Isolar II' tour. Following a digipak-only release in 2019, it deserves the gatefold: a famous YouTube clip captures the performance in lo-fi quality - with bowie donning a casual green tee and spangly silver trousers - but this version is restored straight from the engineer's unclipped soundboard, bringing you a perfectly sync-uppable version in all its high-quality glory.

Review: From 'The Laughing Gnome' to 'Blackstar', everyone has their favourite period of Bowie's career. At the same time, it's a brave person who would dispute that the time frame of this quadruple CD collection is generally accepted to be the moment when the Think White Duke was at his absolute creative peak. Recorded in Los Angeles and Tokyo, the set includes material from the undeniably classic albums including Diamond Dogs and The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust plus a clutch of additional renditions of the equally revered 'Space Oddity', 'The Man Who Sold The World' and the teasingly homoerotic 'Boys Keep Swinging'.

Review: Through the many dimensions of his stellar career, David Bowie left a sprawling trail of broadcast performances which often offered unique insights into some of his most cherished songs. Laser Media have gathered together some of the finest examples of these radio broadcast performances for this lavishly presented box set. Given the focus on the 70s and 80s and the fact they still manage to fill out six CDs, you get some notion of the scale of the musical icon's incomparable archives. Classics like 'Rebel Rebel, 'China Girl' and 'Changes' are all present at least once, but here you get unique versions distinct from the evergreen studio takes embedded in our collective memory.

Review: In 1977, two kings of pop went head to head, appearing simultaneously in Cleveland, Ohio at both their Dinah Shore Show and Agora Ballroom shows respectively. Being made up entirely of Iggy's songs, this album's earlier incarnations appeared under various names - including 'Sister Midnight', 'Raw Power' and 'Suck On This!' - and were naturally credited to Iggy Pop only. Now, Reel To Reel name the Bowie version properly, and deliver it on both vinyl and cassette. Bowie's extra rock n' roll harmonies and duetting flair know no bounds here, bringing out Pop's voice in an extra-thunderous wall of sound.

Review: There have been many 'Tribe Records'-es over the years, but perhaps none were so eminent than the one that existed in '70s Detroit, which gave rise to the release of Harold McKinney's debut album here. On 'Voices And Rhythms Of The Creative Profile', the famous jazz pianist lended a new character to the term 'spiritual jazz', bringing energy and flair - and lots and lots of instrumentation - to the fore, rather than mere sentiment and emotion. This reissue, featuring heavenly gems like 'In The Moog', also features a booklet telling the story of the label from the ground up.

Beats & Breaks strike again. Blossoming into a highly collectable 45 series throughout the year with an exciting balance of heavy hitters and more obscure funk gems, the anonymous editors behind the label have been pulling out some seriously vital break sources and giving them a polish in the drum department throughout the year. This release is all about the heavy hitters as Cerrone's staggering, tripped out proto electro get a wry chunk up and while the clam tight groove on James Brown's "Can I Get Some Help" is given the extension it deserves. These are the breaks.

Review: Tin Machine II was first released by Victory Music in 1991. It was the second and last studio long player from Tin Machine and was followed by a tour. Once it was done, the band's legendary frontman David Bowie went back to his solo career and never looked back. Over the years, the album has take on cult status with Uncut magazine once calling it "extraordinary" and placing it in their list of 50 Great Lost Albums. It is a must-have record with plenty of pure-Bowie moments such as 'baby Universal' and singles like 'You Belong In Rock N Roll,' which did well in the charts at the time.

Backed by the mighty Adrian Bellew on guitar, George Murray on bass and Dennis Davis on drums, the set list for this album is a goldmine for fans of Bowie's Berlin period with Brian Eno. There are plenty of other classics to savour too, making this another essential document for completists of one of the all-time greatest musicians to ever walk this Earth.

It turns out high powered tackle for had working DJs and often draws on classic material for its source sounds. This one is a reissue of a recent 7" that is again hand numbered and limited. First up is James Brown's 'Give It Up Or Turn It Loose' with its big horns, guttural vocal cries and relentlessly funky drums. A year on from the untimely demise of arguably the most influential British musician of the last fifty years, and on the eve of what would have been his seventieth birthday, here we have the opportunity to view his whole jaw-dropping career across the course of two slabs of wax. From the cosmic dread of 'Space Oddity' all the way to the reflective melancholy of 'I Can't Give Everything Away', it's a magnificent testimony to a restless muse that never stopped moving into unchartered territory in search of new adventure. These songs will outlive us all.

Legend has it that David Bowie was so lost in a vortex of cocaine and ego during the making of this record to such a degree that he now can't remember anything about its creation at all. Typically of the Dame though, in the midst of all this madness he created a masterpiece, and arguably his greatest album of all. With a hint of the funk of influence of 'Young Americans', yet filtered through a glacial European sensibility, it's a genre-transcending tour-de-force of boundless scope and imperious swagger. Forty-one years on, this record still sounds like the future.

Parlophone are embarking on a mammoth Bowie reissue campaign. 'Earthling' was the British pop starling's take on rock via drum n' bass and/or techno, coming as one of the classic emblems of 1990s "industrial" David Bowie. In our opinion, the best Bowie there ever was (the blond spiked hair, the earrings, the bad-boy chic...) made this album in a spate of deep inspiration. Bowie's take on acid house with 'Law', or his NIN-adjacent 'I'm Afraid Of Americans', constitute undoubtable, buzzing electronic gems.

Review: Sometimes the best records hinge on a simple premise, and here's one. Why not present two scintillating versions of one of David Bowie's eternally cherished classics on a seven inch? 'Heroes' was only six years old when Bowie performed it in 1983 at the Montreal Forum, and the quality of the recording and performance on this version is truly something to savour, not least thanks to the power of the backing vocalists. Flip the record over and fast-forward seven years to hear Bowie performing to many an adoring fan in 1990 as he closes out a show at the Tokyo Dome. Both tracks were broadcast on radio an so have been bootlegged plenty, but now you can hear them in gorgeous high fidelity, just the way they should be.

Review: 'Moonage Daydream' is the latest addition to the Bowie franchise; an epic film of never-seen-before Bowie footage, recolourised and repackaged to form an experimental cinematic odyssey for today's generation of art rock lovers. The soundtrack sees an insta-release to complement the launch of Parlophone's new digital streaming service; it's got an exclusive early version of 'Hunky Dory' in there, as well as a live version of 'Rock n' Roll With Me'. A kaleidoscopic LP from the master of reinvention, posthumously reinventing himself once more.

Review: What can really be said about David Bowie that hasn't already been said about David Bowie? Throwing caution to the wind, let's try this: The Man Who Fell To Earth wasn't just a musical titan and visionary. He belonged to a small club of artists who could never be satisfied simply releasing good music. Nor was the fact they influenced generation after generation reason to rest on laurels.

Instead, along with the likes of Bjork and Massive Attack, Bowie created entire worlds for his work to exist in. Places we step into through portals and lose ourselves exploring. Records, movies, artwork, fashion, videos, books, these different mediums combine to offer a universe waiting to be found. Transition: On Air 1967-1971, a series of radio appearances, offers an extended opportunity to spend time in the formative days of that galaxy-building.

Review: A Divine Symmetry is the new compilation of demos and rarities from David Bowie's Hunky Dory days, providing an alternative take on the pop chameleon's 1970s long-haired, flared heyday. This is hippie Bowie in full lo-fi glory, as you've never seen or heard him before. A mixture of alternative versions and demos, this is selective compared to the X4 CD set but still a new look at one of the most fiercely examined artists about.

Review: From the peak of David Bowie's glam era, here's one of the all-time greatest albums which is, quite simply, beyond iconic. From the cover photography to every single tune, this is bedded in the popular consciousness like few other records, and so of course it deserves a monumental tribute 50 years after its initial release. All the classics are here from 'Panic In Detroit' to 'The Jean Genie', pressed up on a brand new picture disc which will be an essential purchase for all Bowie collectors and devotees to score, even if they know the album inside and out already.

What can really be said about David Bowie that hasn't already been said about David Bowie?

Given his never ending influence and enduring legacy it is hard to believe it has now been 50 years since David Bowie put out his celebrated Hunky Dory album. The occasion is marked with this special edition on a limited picture disc with new insert and a poster. Frankly, the music still speaks for itself and doesn't need fluffing up, as it remains one of Bowie's most admired works. The first single on the album, 'Changes', had very little success upon the time of release but eventually grew into one of his most iconic singles. Other big moments like 'Life On Mars?' still sound great, too. This one lands a day before what would have been Bowie's 75th birthday, and is a fitting tribute.
