Review: Just when you thought all hope was lost along come The Strokes to fulfil the promises they made way, way back with their startling debut 'Is This It'. That was 17 years ago, and while the outfit have made plenty worthy of note in the years between then and now, we'd be surprised if we're the only ones thinking this latest is their best effort since that inaugural outing. Confident but also hungry, rather than bloated and lazy, there's plenty here that you won't be able to get away from in a hurry. 'Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus' might define the package best, delivering some powerful pop energy in an all-round homage to and critique of the 1980s, an era revisited again on 'Bad Decisions', which owes plenty to Billy Idol's Generation X classic, 'Dancing With Myself', with tracks like 'Why Are Sundays So Depressing' diverting to a synthdom route and 'Not The Same Anymore' throwing crooner styles into the mix. Exceptional stuff.

Review: This deluxe edition of Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori features a wealth of additional material, adding all manner of tangents in relation to the former trio's (now duo's) ultimate reflection on death. Centring on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew 'Fletch' Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Gahan and Gore. It hears a sadder, gloomier yet no less slowly euphoric sound, with lead singles like 'Ghosts Again' presenting a kind of conflicted melancholia.

Review: Multi-talented artist Koffee (real name Mikayla Simpson) has been bubbling under for a while now, with plenty of pundits tipping her to become Jamaica's next global musical superstar. She certainly has the skillset to succeed, being a skilled singer, 'deejay' style rapper, songwriter and producer. Gifted, her debut album, is genuinely excellent, with Simpson singing and rapping over backing tracks that blur the boundaries between dancehall, soca, R&B, soul and synth-pop, with weighty bass and patois-heavy lyrics rooting the sound in her island home. Highlights include previous single 'West Indies', the laidback, lovers rock-influenced shuffle of 'Shine', the dreamy dancehall-pop wonder of 'Pull Up' and the self-explanatory 'Lockdown'.

Review: Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series has done a great job in charting his lengthy career through outtakes, demos, alternate takes and live recordings. The latest volume, a vast five-disc affair accompanied by a 100-page book, chronicles the iconic singer-songwriter's musical adventures in the first half of the 1980s. Dylan released a trio of sets in that time, and while none are among his most celebrated sets, there's an argument to say they've been badly treated. Certainly, there's previously buried treasure to be found across all five discs, with notable highlights including the 12-minute ramble of 'New Danville Girl', a different version of 'Jokerman' that's arguably better than the released version and two contrasting versions of 'Too Late'. We could do without the unlikely cover of 'Sweet Caroline', mind.

Review: By now, there can be few people who don't own a copy of Primal Scream's iconic 1991 album Screamadelica, quite possibly the most loved-up indie-dance album of all time. Few though will have heard the various early recordings, demos and work-in-progress takes showcased on Demodelica, the final part of the band's celebration of Screamadelica's 30th birthday. It's a genuinely revealing affair, with many of the versions of familiar favourites such as 'Come Together', 'Higher Than The Sun' and 'Shine Like Stars' sounding vastly different to the now familiar finished versions. Even more excitingly, the inclusion of multiple mixes means that we can now hear how these much-loved songs evolved over the course of the recording process. In other words, it's a must for Primal Scream fans.

Review: When vital bandmember Andrew Fletcher suddenly passed away at the start of the sessions for 'Memento Mori', even Dave Gahan and Martin Gore wondered aloud whether Depeche Mode would continue. Yet somehow, Gore and Gahan put their much-discussed differences aside, knuckled down and produced something fittingly special: an album that may well be the iconic outfit's most consistent and impressive body of work for decades. Naturally, darkness abounds, with opener 'My Cosmos Is Mine' - all evocative vocals, distorted electronic beats, dark sonic textures and mutilated choral vocal samples - setting the tone for a set that once again brilliantly blends dark synth-pop, gnarled guitars and the kind of lyrical melancholia that stays with you for days. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including 'Ghosts Again', 'Soul With Me' and closing cut 'Speak To Me'.

Review: Baz Luhrmann's latest biopic concerns the high king of rock n' roll himself, Elvis Presley. While remaining a slick epic in classic Luhrmann style, it refuses to shy away from the shadowier and murkier side of Elvis' story that is much less acknowledged; his fatal puppeteering by his own manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The soundtrack to Luhrmann's film combines classic recordings from Presley, remastered for the screen, with modern-day interludes from Doja Cat, Eminem and Maneskin.

Review: Like many musicians, Brockhampton spent much of 2020 recording new material, premiering plenty of it on their various social media channels. Despite this deluge of material, there was much more that they were holding back, and it's those tracks that make up their sixth studio set, Roadrunner: New Light New Machine. It was produced by a wide variety of contributors (including the RZA and Rick Rubin) and sees Kevin Abstract and his self-styled "hip-hop boy band" colleagues add their usual attractive mixture of rap verses and harmonic, R&B style choruses to largely sparse but tough backing tracks rich in crunchy machine drums and deep, booming basslines.

Review: Since dropping their debut album If You Wait in 2013, London Grammar have done a good job in subtly developing their trademark sound. Once renowned for fusing trip-hop and synth-pop, 2017's Truth Is A Beautiful Thing saw Hannah Reid's folksy, emotion-rich vocals rise above luscious orchestration, pastoral instrumentation and a more eclectic mixture of beats. Californian Soil, the trio's delayed third album, continues this organic evolution, adding brighter indie-pop tones (more guitars, basically) and occasional nods to disco-pop to their usual mixture of disparate musical elements. The result is an album that feels far more anthemic than their previous work while retaining much of the band's winning musical formula.

Review: Six years is ages for a band to go without releasing an album or doing very much. But for AC/DC, whose work rate has always been ridiculously high, it's a very, very long time. Between then and now, the band lost their lead singer, Brian Johnson, to hearing difficulties in the middle of their last tour, and saw drummer Paul Rudd arrested in New Zealand for 'attempting to procure a murder'. Talk about impetus to finally call time.

But then these are the guys responsible for one of history's greatest heavy rock triumphs, 1980s's Back In Black, released just months after formative frontman Bon Scott tragically passed. So it's no surprise Power Up, another post-traumatic release albeit an act of reunification with now (relatively) healthy Johnson and innocent Rudd returning, is among their best in the 40 years since. A comeback record that sounds exactly like AC/DC should - ballsy, bluesy, boozy riffs.

Review: In interviews promoting Medicine at Midnight, Foo Fighters' delayed tenth album, Dave Grohl compared it to David Bowie's Let's Dance LP, describing the collected songs as "really fun" and "up". While the comparison to Bowie's disco-influenced album is perhaps a bit of a stretch to our ears, it's true that Medicine at Midnight is not your average Foo Fighters album. For starters, it boasts occasional use of drum loops, the palette of sounds is wider, and some songs are closer in tone to pop-rock than the post-grunge alt-rock sound the band is famous for (though recent single 'No Son of Mine' is a typically raucous affair). Of course, there are still plenty of frazzled guitar riffs to enjoy, it's just that this time they only occasionally dominate the sound space.

Review: Welcome 2 America, the first posthumous album release of previously unheard music from Prince's bulging archives, may not be up to the dizzyingly high standards he set himself, but it's still a hugely enjoyable collection of cuts. Prince recorded it with his New Power Generation band in 2010 ahead of a world tour, but eventually decided against releasing it. Musically, it's typical of the great man - think looser than normal shuffling, musically layered purple soul and funk in his inimitable style- and it does genuinely contain some gems. These include 'Born 2 Die', which reminded us of the conscious soul of Curtis Mayfield; 'Welcome 2 America', where Prince's spoken word vocals take aim at the USA during the Obama era, and the guitar-laden Purple Rain-era throwback 'Hot Summer'.

Review: This 17-track set brings together two vital - and phenomenally successful - releases from Pitbull's expansive catalogue: hit-filled 2012 album "Global Warming" and the EP that followed a year later, "Meltdown". Both are superb examples of Pitbull's in-your-face, party-starting style, in which his distinctive raps and guest spots from fellow musical A-listers (think J-Lo, Enrique Englasias, Mayer Hawthorne, Kelly Rowland, Usher, Christiana Aguilera and Chris Brown) ride bold, energetic backing tracks that join the dots between hip-hop, EDM and, thanks to some particularly cheeky sampling, elements from all manner of well-known pop, soul and rock tracks. The emphasis is on fun from start to finish, and in these troubled times many of us need that in our lives.

Review: It's been twenty five years since the last Roger Waters solo album, and given the fractious nature of global affairs of late, it's hardly surprising that the lugubrious 74-year-old rock colossus has had no trouble finding things to get angry about of late. Dishing out songs on drone warfare, terrorism and American nationalism, 'Is This The Life We Really Want?' - which is stylistically very much in the mould of his post-'Dark Side' oeuvre - may be no barrel of laughs, but it's oddly reassuring that his righteous rage remains undiminished, not to mention aided and abetted by the skills of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in its intensity and relit ire.

Review: If you've always wanted to dive into Jean-Michel Jarre's discography but don't know where to start, this mid-price compendium of classic albums could come in handy. It gathers together five of his most celebrated albums, beginning with 1981's Magnetic Fields - a particularly abstract and ambient affair by his usual melodious standards - and ending with 1990's Waiting For Cousteau, a cheerful and largely forthright affair influenced by both contemporaneous dance music and Caribbean calypso music. In between, you'll find the synth-pop and electro flavours of 1986's Rendez-Vous, and 1988 set Revolutions, which was partly inspired by industrial music. While the latter doesn't exactly sound like Cabaret Voltaire or Throbbing Gristle, you can certainly tell that the legendary French synthesizer composer had been listening to their albums.

Review: Surprising collaborations sometimes yield great results - and Milano is a perfect example. It follows Luppi's previous collaborative album 'Rome', which he released with Danger Mouse in 2011, featuring vocals from Jack White and Norah Jones. This second pairing in an Italian-themed series sees Luppi, the composer partially responsible for Gnarls Barkley's smash hit 'Crazy', arranging the ever-prolific and consistent NY garage rockers Parquet Courts. Added into the mix is Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - whos vocal features on four tracks are arguably some of her best work in a while. Highlights are plentiful as Luppi wrangles the band on this genius collaboration, from the explosive 'Mount Napoleon', the jagged and unnerving 'Flush', the sleek and frankly hilarious 'Pretty Prizes', right through to the contorted Tom Waits-esque closer 'Cafe Flesh'. 'Milano' is essential listening for any Parquet Courts fan old or new and is evidence that even when working with others, they seem to be continuing their never-ending winning streak.

Review: Five years after their collaborative debut, Madlib and Freddie Gibbs reconvene for a follow up that goes even deeper. Madlib is of course a celebrated producer who has worked with some of the best in the game, and Gibbs is a raw street rapper, so it is the differences as much as the similarities between the two that make this such a compelling listen. At times complex and challenging, at others effortless and charming, it's an album stuffed with a myriad of different sounds, styles and references that is hard to categorise but easy to admire.

Review: Since releasing his last solo album in 2011, Raphael Saadiq has spent rather a lot of time steering the career of American soul singer and rapper Adrian Marcel. Thankfully Saadiq has finally found time to get back in the studio himself, with "Jimmy Lee" the result of those sessions. Saadiq is in impeccable vocal form throughout an album that's far more musically eclectic than you'd perhaps expect. While naturally rooted in hip-hop and R&B, you'll also find cuts that feature fuzzy, razor-sharp guitar licks, doff a cap to doo-wop and gospel soul, breathe new life into '80s electrofunk and channel the spirit of vintage 1970s soul.

Review: South London pianist and composer Ashley Henry is a versatile musician who can move between all niches within his musical realm: hip hop, broken beat, jazz and fusion flows from his finger tips and all characterise his expansive and expressive new album "Beautiful Vinyl Hunter". Stellar collaborators Makaya McCraven, Judi Jackson and MC Sparkz amongst others all help enrich this album as it flows from post-bop to classic jazz to neo-soul in thrilling fashion. Rooted in tradition but with a distinctly London edge that soars to new heights, this record sets a new benchmark for the contemporary scene.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.

Review: The immaculately suave and stylish duo Hurts, formed of synthesist Adam Anderson & vocalist Theo Hutchcraft are back with their fourth full-length 'Desire'. The album is packed with huge, stadium-filling anthems, as we've come to expect from them. However, the more curious moments come from track such as the stripped back ballad 'Chaperone', or the heavily Prince-inspired 'Boyfriend', or the infectious neo-soul of 'Spotlights'. Matching the duo, this production is equally slick, and this fourth missive is as impressive, heady and irresistible as any of their previous.

Review: Surely not even the most ardent Bowie fan saw any of this coming. Yet to offset the justified grief and mourning at the most otherworldly and mercurial of all musical icons departing our realm, he's left us with one of his greatest albums to date and certainly his best in a full quarter century - one that returns him spiritually to the dizzying collision of bracing experimentation and melodious drama that typified the so-called Berlin trilogy of the '70s yet transplants that ambience to a new more complicated age. Jazzy inflections, electronic filigree and stark soundscapes collide elegantly amidst that stentorian voice, and whether or not Bowie put this together as a farewell, he couldn't have done it better if he'd tried. We'll truly never see his like again, alas.

Review: The mercurial and magical Jeff Buckley departed this realm leaving a severe shortage of actual material, thus this collection of early demos - recorded in 1993 in advance of his debut album proper 'Grace' - marks a cherished opportunity to experience his soulful intensity and otherworldly powers as an interpreter of song. The majority of 'You And I' consists of covers, traversing all the way from Sly & The Family Stone to The Smiths, yet all imbued with his uniquely raw, intuitive and captivating approach. The world will never see the like of Jeff Buckley again, which makes 'You And I' a document worth savouring.

Review: Manchester's Everything Everything have invariably appeared ahead of the pack, their itchy art-rock overloaded with ideas and energy to the point that they provoked bewilderment as readily as rapture. Yet this third album appears to be the point where they're united with the wider world at large, and their newly enormous and heinously catchy sound appears ready to conquer it. Produced by pop doyen Stewart Price, 'Get To Heaven' is embarrassingly rammed full of hooks, innovative textures and complex yet memorable tuneage, securing this curious four-piece's position as a truly unique star in the modern rock firmament.

Review: Sarah Plapinger may have made her name running the label Neon Gold and effectively working as a pop tastemaker, yet she's no slouch when it comes to making her own music, as Ms Mr - her duo with Max Hershenow - proves. However, 'How Does It Feel' has more to do it than mere high-gloss surface and state-of-the-art production - there's a rich vein of melancholy to these hook-laden songs, balancing out broken promises and existential unease even whilst figuratively dwelling on the dancefloor. Colourful yet deep, stylish yet emotional, this is adult pop with a heart, something of a rarity in cynical times.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but Julio Bashmore's debut album, Knockin' Boots, is finally here. With releases on Dirtybird, Futureboogie, and mixes for Mixmag and Radio One, the hat loving Bristol producer has come a long way throughout the last five years. Knockin' Boots is a ten-track blend of soulful house and minimal-edged bass music, with the title track itself being something of a Chicago stomper. There's plenty of sublime sampling within Bashmore's house servings, such as on the excellent and discofied "Hold On" featuring Sam Dew, "What's Mine Is Mine", and the juke-inspired "Bark". The LP also verges on the pop end of things with tunes like "For Your Love" or "Rhythm Of Auld", and it's simply a pleasure to play from beginning to end. Bashmore coming through diverse and explosive, as per usual. Ya need.

Review: Whilst it's now impossible to view Leonard Cohen's final album outside the context of his passing, the fact of the matter is that this lugubrious sage had been ruminating on the nature of endings and goodbyes for much of his near half-century of artistry, and it's hard to think of a figure who's been quite so eloquent and wise in this endeavour. 'You Want It Darker' seem may a fitting way to bow out, but moreso it bears testimony to the fact that Cohen's questing spirit remained undimmed right until the last, and his travails in the exploration of faith, romance and the human condition were never to lose their finesse and bite.

For their latest trawl through the back catalogues of legendary labels Epic, Arista, Philadelphia International and RCA Victor, SonyBMG has handed over the reins to noted re-editor and crate-digger DJ Reverend P. He duly gathers together three discs of killer material, alternating between the well-loved - Tom Browne's "Funkin' For Jamaica", The Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt", and George Duke's "Brazilian Love Affair", for starters - and the slightly lesser-known. The latter category contains some excellent alternative mixes, including the original, killer 12" version of Herbie Hancock's "Stars In Your Eyes", a rare Tom Moulton remix of "Anyway You Wanna" by Peoples Choice, and a smattering of the good Reverend's own re-edits.

Review: As someone whose melancholy melodic flair and poetic skills have helped to shape a fair chunk of twenty-first century indie-pop, Jamre Mercer might have been forgiven for resting on his laurels at this stage, but the good news is that this fifth album marks a fruitful evolution for this wordy and ornate stylings whilst still offering the solace of old. The self-produced songs here are replete with sunny pop tuneage, new wavey vigour and electronic ornamentation, and the wordplay sharp. Older and wiser twenty year into the band's life, Mercer may be world-weary, yet his skills remain evergreen.

Review: Recent reviews of Spirit, Depeche Mode's first studio set for four years, have remarked at how angry and frustrated the band seems to be throughout. Messers Gore, Gahan and Fletcher are not particularly happy with the way the world is right now, and have laid down an album of rare intensity, seemingly fuelled by a growing desperation at political events on both sides of the Atlantic. Producer James Ford undoubtedly played a role in defining the sound of Sprit, but the combination of raucous, punk style guitars, thrusting electronics and big choruses is what we've come to expect from Depeche Mode.

Review: Throughout their near four-decade career, Depeche Mode have been smart at picking remixers. It should come as little surprise, then, that the CD version of "Where's The Revolution", the first single to be taken from forthcoming full-length Spirit, boasts a superb remix package. The original version - a typically dark fusion of synth-pop and rock produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford - is given a going over by French tecnno/electro sort Terrence Fixmer, Ewan Pearson (with a few additional touches here and there from pal and longtime collaborator Sasse), industrial/noise artist Algiers (AKA Ben Greenberg) and fast rising shoegaze duo Autolux, whose rework pits Martin Gore's vocals against their own distinctive backing track.

Review: Quiet revolution seems to be the driving force of this sophomore set from lauded trio London Grammar. Lyricist and vocalist Hannah Reid has expanded her subject matter a little, though angst and love lost are still her major concern. Her delivery, too, is a little gentler, something presumably party inspired by the band's warmer and dreamier musical outlook. There are a few heartfelt sing-alongs, of course, but for the most part Truth is a Beautiful Thing is a more considered and voluptuous excursion. This deluxe edition includes five more tracks than the standard CD, including an emotion-rich cover version of the Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (recorded during a BBC session at Maida Vale Studios), a pair of demo versions and a Church mix of "May the Best".

Review: Given the strong links between the Super Discount series and the undulating fortunes of the French house scene, it could be argued that this third volume - appearing 11 years after the second edition - is long overdue. Whereas the first edition showcased the "French touch" style at the height of its pomp, and the second had a noisy, Ed Banger-ish approach, this third installment is an altogether smoother and more radio-friendly effort. With the assistance of friends and guest vocalists, De Crecy lays down ten tracks that offer a cheery, synth-heavy approach to dance-pop, with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek disco and electrofunk influences to keep Daft Punk fans happy.

Review: As the matter-or-fact title suggests, '80s Remixed & Extended delivers three discs of alternative 12" versions of well-known and mostly well-loved pop, soul and dance cuts from the decade of hairspray, MTV and rampant consumerism. Naturally, there are plenty of stone cold classics present - Coldcut's "People Hold On", Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That", and so on - but the collection's strongest selling point are the lesser-known 12" versions dotted across the three discs. These include a long forgotten Francois K remix of Adam Ant, a sparkling Shep Pettibone tweak of Five Star, and the surprisingly dubby, low-slung 12" version of Men At Work's gloriously silly "Down Under".

This major label backed debut album, Sing To The Moon, is pretty special, too. It touches on a myriad of styles, from the Charles Stepney/Rotary Connection-ish gospeldelia of "Diamonds" and grandiose "Like The Morning Dew", to the twinkling soul-jazz of "That's Alright" (like Emile Sande, only 100 times better) and mournful strings of the beautiful "She". Throughout, Mvula's voice provides a constant reminder of her immense talents. Atmospheric, entertaining and immaculately produced, it's some debut.

Review: Sean Kingston, the17 year-old Miami born, Jamaica bred artist, is not just a new face in popular music; he's accomplished the rare task of creating a new genre where rap, reggae, pop, doo-wop and remarkable songwriting all combine into something totally refreshing. Add in Sean's family roots, which include legendary Jamaican producer Jack Ruby as his grandfather, and you have one of the most exciting debuts this year. And while hip-hop lyrics have sparked the biggest debate in years, Sean finds himself in the centre of the controversy - but not where you might think. The teen prefers to show his creativity without using profanity. It's no wonder then that Sean is quickly becoming a household name with his first single "Beautiful Girls," a song cross-pollinating on both urban and pop radio stations coast to coast. Kingston wants to make it clear that he is no cookie cutter artist that has the songs mapped out for him - he comes up with 100 percent of his lyrics. Sean also understands that as a 17 year-old making urban music he has a responsibility to fans, "With this album I thought it was important to not use curse words or negative language that might offend people. I write my own songs so it's like if I can write a great track without using those words, then that's the style for me." Now Kingston says he's looking forward to making timeless music and living out his dream. In just a short time, Kingston has already done what few in his age bracket can accomplish - get people excited about music again.
