Review: Lush Life is a seminal recording amongst many from the late great and legendary John Coltrane. It came at a time when his sound was transitioning between styles and after he had overcome his addiction to narcotics. He had first played with the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 before starting his own quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones in 1960 and this one was made from three different recording sessions. Side A is by a trio setup with no piano while the flip is a quintet with Donald Byrd and Red Garland showing their skills. Devoid of the speedy, flashy solo skills he'd been known for in his early career, this is almost ambient, much more about the lush textures and meditational pace than be bop ever was.

Review: Here it is: the all-time great album that popularised jazz for the masses, and which carries the genre's torch to this day. Most works by Coltrane serve as good introductions to jazz’s endemic practice of through-composition, but A Love Supreme (1964, Impulse!) is arguably among his best works to come in four suites; to quarter a technically singular piece. Widely recognised as the moment at which John all-aboarded the Soul ‘Trane, the album marked the apogee of a wave of popular analyses of US jazz records as holding special spiritual significance. This early vaunting may have fed into its popularity into the present day; but we cannot gloss over the fact that such elevations in status do not tend to come without supreme merit, and more level-headed takes on the LP simply interpret it as one of the most impeccably performed, precisely timed jazz records of its day. Remastered for the esteemed Analogue Productions series, its everlasting flame is rekindled.

Review: Released in 1960, Giant Steps was a watershed album for John Coltrane, solidifying the saxophone legend's reputation as one of the most influential and innovative musicians in jazz history, as well as delivering jazz to an increasingly mainstream audience, while garnering significant critical acclaim. Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind Of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one. Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked here by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers - who was the only bandmember other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated, replicating the alternate non-Bill Evans lineup featured on 'Freddie The Freeloader' on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos.

Review: Jazz pioneer and trumpet maestro Miles Davis was still in the early stages of his career when he played the three sessions that went on to comprise his Blue Note recordings in 1952, 1953, and 1954. A year later the final one, the seminal Blue Note label put the tracks together into two 12" albums as part of the 1500 series. They bare all the hallmarks of his early signature style from fiery bebop to beautiful ballads. Now the album comes in a mono, newly mastered version in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition and pressed on 180g vinyl. Standouts include 'How Deep Is The Ocean' and 'Dear Old Stockholm.'

Review: The recordings that make up Afro Blue Impressions were acquired by jazz impresario and auteur Norman Granz, during the tours he produced for many jazz artists during the 1960s, though they weren't issued until 1973. Recorded at shows in Berlin and Stockholm, the John Coltrane Quartet - comprising pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones - is in tremendous form here, using a familiar repertoire in order to expand upon the group's own building blocks in creating the new post-harmonic system that the saxophonist was developing at the time. Review: For all but the most ardent followers of jazz and diehard Miles Davis fans, it can be hard to keep up with the many different albums he put out alongside his Quintet. That Quintet, often said to be the greatest in all of jazz history thanks to including Miles on trumpet next to John Coltrane on tenor, Red Garland on keys, bass from Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on drums, put out several long players with very similar titles including this one, Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet, in 1956. It is one of the earlier works from the then newly formed band and the songs in it are a mix of pop and jazz standards.

Review: It's the late 1950s and modernism reigns. The fires of World War II have been extinguished, leaving behind scorched earth, half-ruined cities, and a firm focus on looking ahead to a better world. How little they knew. From this Cold War setting, wherein the lines between good and bad appear deceptively clear, a new form of jazz begins to emerge. Smooth, cool, and unarguably inviting, Miles Davis was among the greatest proponents of the 'modal' movement - whereby long, linear melodic movements were favoured over the nervous energy and tension of what had come before. The legendary trumpeter, bandleader and composer gave us a lot of landmark sounds, and his score to the Louis Malle film, Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud, isn't one of the best known. Nevertheless, it defines everything that was great and timeless about the iconic brass man.

Review: The still hugely influential John Coltrane is as iconic as jazz saxophonists get and during the late 1950s he was explorer ever wider new musical realms. Stardust was released in 1963 and was recorded with musicians including pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummers Jimmy Cobb and Art Taylor. The album features some standard cover tunes but the laying of Coltrane in particular is so standout that he manages to really elevate each one. The hard-bop arrangements are all engaging from front to back and packed with subtlety to make them all the more emotive with each new listen.

Review: Last year, an eagle-eyed researcher discovered a genuine slept-on gem in the archives of New York Public Library: a forgotten, unreleased recording of the John Coltrane Quintet playing - alongside bass clarinettist Eric Dolphy, at the iconic Village Gate venue in August 1961. Here, that recording - now freshly mastered - is released to the public for the first time, and as you'd expect it's rather special. Coltrane is at his magical, blistering best throughout, with his band offering similarly impressive support throughout. Highlights include the only live recording yet discovered of the quintet performing 'Africa', an insanely good 10-minute take on Coltrane classic 'Impressions', and Dolphy's star turn on 'When Lights Are Low'. In a word: essential!

Review: Miles Davis's Seven Steps to Heaven album came in 1963 and was recorded in two different studios at a vital time in his career. It was the first new work in a year (back then he had released thick and fast since debuting in 1950) and can be rightly thought to be the first time his second great quintet really came together and showed their mettle. The album got two Grammy nominations and is also noted for being the last time Davis mixed up standards with original works. It's one of his most expressive and well-played oeuvres. This special edition reissue has been remastered from the original analogue master tapes so sounds of the highest quality and is backed with detail, tone and definition.

Review: Sorcerer is a 1967 album from the Miles Davis Quintet - the third of six albums the group recorded. The line-up is a who's who of the era, with Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on double bass and Tony Williams on drums. The only exception is the track 'Nothing Like You' which closes the album, originally recorded in 1962 with a wholly different line-up including Bob Dorough on vocals. It's considered one of the greatest albums of the Quintet's run, capturing a moment when Davis was moving on from trad bop and drawing on the writing talents of his peers in the group.

Review: 1977's Quiet Nights is one of legendary American jazz figure Mile Davis' lesser known albums. It's not Bitches Brew or Kind of Blue, but it is a delightfully easy to listen work, with references taken from Brazilian folk on 'Prenda Minha' which actually gets renamed 'Song #2' here, or Spanish classical on 'Adelita' which was written by the pioneering Francisco Tarrega and is here called 'Song #1' .There are also some woozy ballads and standout big band jam 'Summer Night.' This reissue comes on heavyweight vinyl and is a great reminder of the range of the influential jazz legend.
