Review: Joy Came Early or as it wants to be known JCE is a brand new imprint that signs Pelle for the first outing. The Dutch artist is also an audio engineer at Time Item Studio who has dropped heat on the likes of Picnic Records, Ovnie, Vekton Black and his own playground Karton label which he launched in 2011 with David van Bilderbeek. Here he offers the mysterious and cosmic tech house bumps of 'Slapdash Intermission' which becomes heavier and widescreen thanks to the Man/Ipulate remix. Two further originals feature on the flip with 'Double Standard' locking into a nice dynamic but zoned-out tech house sound and 'Ghosting' getting more gritty. A fine start to label life.

Review: Blur were always the posh, private school answer to the more streetwise cool of Oasis during the heyday of Brit pop during the mid to late 90s. Their second album Modern Life Is Rubbish got them back into the affections of the public after their debut album somewhat turned people off (with many thinking it was a cash in on the popular but fading Manchester sound) and saw the band fall behind the likes of Suede. Part of the raisin for the return to success was the sonic makeover which brought more tradition guitar-pop sounds back with lush melodies and poignant humour in the lyrics from lead singer Damon Albarn. On its 30th anniversary the album now gets a full reissue as part of National Album Day 2023

This full length is the artist's fifth in total and is in the similar vein as Romanthony or perhaps Jus ED. The blend of house heaters, vocals and injecting some soul into the mix, is the ingredients for the recipe. There are killer house bangers like 'Come Back To Life' and 'My Love Is Deep' while some others explore a deeper dubby groove like in 'Stranger Than Fiction' or the Hip-House inspired 'Wanna Find Out'. Plenty here for house fans to enjoy.

Review: Divisive wouldn't even come close to describing Panic! At The Disco's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. For some, even the band's name was enough to put them off, for others, this record arrived riding on the tail end of the second emo wave, which in itself may have been too little too late (or too much?) to stand any chance of saving the genre from becoming a parody of itself.

And yet in the eyes of many, A Fever remains a landmark release from a band that helped define the sound's resurgence at that time. It's a fraught and angsty ode to the moments in our lives when, for a few at least, hanging out in shopping malls being sarcastic and embracing affectation is the only real way to spend the weekend. Recreate those memories with this 25th anniversary edition of an album you already know you love and want. Or not.

Review: You cannot help but head deep into a steamy and tropical jungle from the first moment Conjunto Ingenieria's self-titled album begins to play. Compiled by El Dragon Criollo and El Palmas, it is a great selection of tracks from all throughout the group's career from the early 60s onwards. They remain one of Venezuela's most celebrated bands not least in part thanks to their creativity, vibrant sound and vital rhythms, all served up with youthful energy. This collection is a testament to that with horn-and-percussion heavy stompers, Latin rock n roll and staccato grooves all providing a real musical flex.

Review: Few modern hardcore acts have been able to generate the level of hype which Santa Cruz, California crossover thrash mob Drain effortlessly cultivated in the years since dropping their instant classic debut California Cursed in 2020. Making a name for themselves as a vital live act in a year where touring was literally impossible, anticipation has been rife for their sophomore effort with Epitaph Records who scooped the band up following their seal of approval from Revelation. Living Proof serves as an elevation of every strength from the retro 80s indebted riffage to the crushing breakdowns and frontman Sammy Ciaramitaro's beastly snarl. Complete with bouncing anthems of communal venom while also sporting a shockingly faithful Descendents cover in the form of 'Good Good Things', which hints at effortless melodious tendencies, this long overdue follow up is set to ignite the Drain momentum even further, and cement them as forerunners of the global expansion and recognition of hardcore as a respected movement.

Review: To our ears, 1975's Radioactivity is Kraftwerk's most ghostly and otherworldly album. It was famously their first set made entirely with electronic instruments - some home-made - and now sounds like a bridge between the more krautrock-style hypnotism of the earlier Autobahn and the slicker, more tuneful albums that followed it. In other words, it's as weird, alien and otherworldly as it is ground-breaking and pop-leaning. This 2020 reissue is well worth picking up, not least because it comes pressed on translucent yellow vinyl and comes accompanied by a glossy, 16-page booklet full of iconic Kraftwerk images.
